As a culture fetishising youth is normalized, so underage people are dressed/treated like adults and sexualized, but once they hit age of maturity (18, 21, etc) they're infantilized and treated like children/teens and sexualized. As an example, Ariana Grande has gotten more childish and sexy as she has matured, which you would think (and hope!) Would be counterintuitive, but it's actually encouraged and typical in the industry, especially when you consider that most women 'age out' of their peak popularity, which tends to be 18-25, and after 30, they're replaced by the next wave of teens. (I'm explaining my point rlly badly lol, I'll edit it later when I can think abt it😅)

on the opposite end but relevant to the obsession with youth, i hate the people who enforce age stereotypes on "older" idols like jin or irene and talk about them like theyre in their 80's or something and being like "they havent aged a day! immortal gods!" and theyre like... in their late 20's. becoming 30 isnt the end of the world
@Anna-qy5re
@Anna-qy5re 3 года назад
I feel like some fans are really young and view idols older than them as "old". One of the contestants on bighit's survival show was born in 1997 and I literally saw people say that they don't understand why he was included or that he is too old and won't get to debut, just because he wasn't in the final lineup. I understand that there is an age issue in the kpop industry, but the contestant is from Japan, so he won't have to go to the military for two years. He isn't even that old to begin with. I did have similar thoughts when I first started watching the show, but some people take it to the extreme. Idols much oder than him have recently debuted.
@kerry7081
@kerry7081 3 года назад
Anna they really do think people older than like. 24 dont exist and think that you stop functioning as a person when you turn 25 or 30 but i guess its partially because of companies debuting 14-17 year old idols who are you know, kids the same age as most of these fans. especially when its in the same group as someone older (again, like jin with jungkook from bts and irene with yeri from red velvet)

An example of this is when some ppl call jungkook junglebook or johnc*ck or smth like that when CLEARLY said that he used to get bullied bc of his name and that he doesn't like being called like that, like how hard is it to respect someone's name. Also when some person shows them how to say the member's names right and they say this iM nOt kOrEaN tHo, if someone doesn't pronounce my name right even after I corrected them I would be furious. I saw a tiktok video where someone called jungkook junglebook and there were some cmnts that said "its jungkook not junglebook" and the replys literally said iTs a jOkE, which is clearly not funny bc that's just pure disrespect. I think a good example of fans not letting an idol grow up is taehyung from bts. Recently he has been more reserved and not as playful as he was at debut, and some fans insist that it's because there's something wrong with him, he's depressed, or he dislikes being an idol. The reality is just that he's grown up and matured, and in in the soop tae and jungkook even talk about this. You can't expect this adult man to still act like he did when he debuted as a teenager, especially when he has been working professionally as an artist for years. Also, assuming such serious things about him and his life is hella rude and crossing so many boundaries as a fan who doesn't know him irl

However I still see so much of that "baby cheese Taeminnie" sentiment in places and it freaks me out. The man will say (rather lightheartedly but still) he wants to be "cool" but the babying persists. It's only ramped up now that he's on that damn Bubble app doing all the silly "fans are like my only friends/lovers uwu🥰" shit. And ofc fans drink it up because that's how fanservice works. @@dikshasingh02 Lmao it’s fine. The comment above said that international fans can fall into these racial stereotypes of seeing Asian people as only innocent people. (The model minority myth) this makes you see Asians as super smart, never doing drugs, never drinking and that is what makes you infantilize them. Calling them babies saying they shouldn’t know anything about sex. Giving them bibs and shit😳. But since sooo many racial stereotypes are ingrained into our society we can’t really catch ourselves accidentally saying something stereotypical. Or catch ourselves falling into these stereotypes. I’m black and sometimes I get embarrassed because I’m wonder if I’m to ghetto around other people if I use AAVE so I stop myself from using it in front of white people. I have heard a lot Asians say that they need to do better in school because they also know the model minority myth and want to live up to that because imagine people seeing an Asian homeless or in the streets doing drugs and thinking “they could’ve have done so much better.” Not because of they are disappointed in you for being homeless or doing crime but because “all Asians south or east are supposed to be smart.” They wouldn’t think the same thought for seeing a Hispanic or Black person out homes less because we have always been under estimated. imo, i see no issue CALLING an idol “baby” or babying them when you see a cute video, or they look really cute and innocent in a pic or something as a form of admiration INDIRECTLY. it’s similar to thinking an idol is hot or something, on the other side of the spectrum. I DO, however, have an issue when fans TREAT the idol as a baby. IT IS an issue when you treat them as a baby irl and call them “baby” directly to them. IT IS an issue when someone cannot distinguish between babying them as a compliment(? idk if that’s the right word) and babying them seriously. to me at least, i see babying in two ways: for example, “omg look at _____ here!!! ____ is so cute here omg my baby 🥺” to me, that’s ok as long as that’s all there is to it without projecting that image onto them outside of that one brief moment. another example of what i’m talking about is something like “hi ____, please say you love me but with aegyo!!” or “____ is a sweet baby, they would never do that” when they’ve done something wrong. there’s a fine line between the two, but i beg of you, if you baby your idols on your own time, DO NOT let it crossover and DO NOT apply it to the real world where you only see them in that light. THIS. There is *absolutely nothing wrong* with being a soft stan and finding people cute, especially people who are much younger than you. If a newly-debuted idol is, say, 10 years younger than you and still a minor, of course you would find their mannerisms and actions endearing and sweet, even when they grow up to become a legal adult. There's also the age hierarchy culture of Korea making it so that one is always playing a role in the group dynamic; the baby of the bunch will never not be be the baby of the bunch, no matter how old they get. That being said, however, people do deserve to mature as they get older, and it's this stifling of this natural desire to grow that I think is the real problem in the community at large, *not* cute, fresh, playful concepts (I could go on a whole spiel here about how happy, bright, cute concepts are not and should not be seen as exclusive to The Youth, but that's a rant for another day) or aegyo or finding people cute/adorable instead of sexy/hot. It is quite possible to acknowledge and accept that someone is a legal adult who is capable of making their own decisions, while also acknowledging that you will always see them as a little brother/sister who will always have their own special brand of cuteness to you no matter how old they get.

I remember the whole fiasco that occurred when that statue appeared in Blackpink’s video. The people that spoke out were rightfully angry but I kept seeing toxic blinks doxxing, bullying, and harassing them. We don’t really know for sure if Blackpink has creative freedom when it comes to their music videos, however, that doesn’t mean we shouldn’t hold them or their team accountable for offensive/ignorant actions. This whole “they’re Korean they don’t know any better” statement is so ignorant. Instead of actually holding their faves accountable, they always deflect with the argument of them not being from the same country. Ignorance should not be tolerated, especially by those who are looked at and idolized by thousands of people.

A couple things I hate: 1. over-babying older idols. sure, appreciate them being cute or whatever but saying things like "protecc the babie!1!11" is just annoying, like hes 25 and ur 13 you dont need to protect him. 2. trying to act "knowlegeable" about korean culture and like "educating people". trust me, if you havent grown up with korean parent/s or been to korea or just been immersed in that culture entirely, you dont know shit about them. coming from an indian-american who frequently gets "educated" about my own culture that eventually turn out to be incorrect "facts". 3. sexualizing minors. Its confusing to me how yall can be so overprotective over jungkook and taehyung, who are literally 23 and 25 respectively, but for huening kai yall yall just let loose. granted hes not a minor anymore but earlier yall werent so shy about sexualizing a 17 year old. 4. not giving idols their freedom. bro theyre already controlled by their companies to a great deal (looking at you, YG and SM). so many fans get so mad at literally anything they do, whether its wearing a shirt, getting tattoos, writing a song in a diff style, etc. if they dont want to do aegyo, they dont have to. if they want to get tattoos, they can if its legal. yall get so mad when youre precious perfect idols do something they want to do and then blow up at YG for being controlling. make it make sense. 5. yall seem to forget that these idols are young people who just happen to make music and have fame. they are much younger than a lot of the hollywood stars and singer in america. they are human. its easy to forget that theyre not some kind of superhero or magician. theyre just a group of boys and girls singing and doing what they love. that isnt the only thing that defines them. please try to see them as human.

eh, i don't know about this tho. As a 19 year old from the UK, who also has several learning, social, physical and mental disabilities. I've been babied in high school by friends, who would call me a baby. And deliberately hung out with me to take me for ice cream and sweets, and then to the play park. I never thought I had a childish fashion, but I wear a lot of soft colours with cute animals on them that are baggy, but that's for my special needs. I'm not trying to be any one's baby. I don't know if she was my girlfriend or just friend, but whenever we went back to her house, she'd play violent video games, knowing I'd get upset by them. And she'd hold my head on her knee and stroke my hair very slowly. I didn't know how it made me feel at the time, because I wasn't seeing my doctor and therapist, and learning about emotion and interaction. And looking back on this, it made me uncomfortable. I enjoy playing with toys and swinging on the swings, but that doesn't mean she could baby me, and use this to her fantasies. I was infantilized, and it isn't fun or nice. You feel like you aren't a person in their eyes, just a thing for their fun. All of these idols will feel the same way as me. I was gifted things too. I usually get toys anyway, and love presents of teddies and my model horses. But she gave these to me, because I think I was her baby. I felt upset whenever she'd give me these things. She once joked, when we saw a toddler in a harness, that she should get one of them for me. I ran away from her that day, and almost got hit by a car. If It wasn't a slow driver, I wouldn't be here today. Stop treating idols like this, it's not fun for them. I don't understand how you could find this fun, but there's a lot of people like this person, who did this to me. And that scares me. And makes me scared for these idols feelings and health. I can't cross the street without help, so they probably wouldn't nearly get run over trying to escape. But everyone saying there's no harm in this, should please reconsider.
@narcissismpeach

First, I'm sorry that person did that to you. I hope you have a good support group you can rely on. Second, I had a similar experience myself with infantilized. I'm not good at picking up social clues and generally can't read the room but several times in the past, a few of my friends (and others) would treat me like a child, despite the fact that I'm older than most of them. I will admit that I like being looked after (to a certain extent) and I understand that I come across as very naive and obtuse but I'm not *that* ignorant. I know I dress very cutely and I love the colour pink but people won't see past that. To them, they see a rather innocent and naive 20-year old who can't grasp the concept of sex or drugs,, etc. So they feel the need to talk to me in a motherly, slow voice and leave me out of conversations surrounding such topics. I distinctly remembered being at a house party with my friends and they purposely starting conversations around sex, which I don't mind talking about, but they were huddled in a corner talking in low voices and when I tried to join in, they said it didn't concern me. At the end of the night, I texted one of my friends how deeply upset I was at being treated like that and laid out how tired I was of being babied by them. Thankfully, they listened to me and understand how they were treating me was wrong. They haven't infantilized since. People have no idea how embarrassing and upsetting it can be to be infantilized. It's insane how people have this image of you in their head and how they go through such great lengths to protect this idolised version of you.

I’m starting to feel like a bad person for actually liking it when people talk to me like I’m a child, because everyone else seems to hate it and find it dehumanising. Question: is it only infantilisation if the other person doesn’t like it? I also have a mental disability (I was born with it). I was left out of absolutely everything my high school friends did because I couldn’t leave the house on my own (and I still can’t). I also can’t cross the road on my own. I can’t even go _anywhere_ on my own because I’ll either get lost or get hit by a car. When someone tries to talk to me like I’m an adult, I just kind of have to pretend to understand what they’re talking about I guess, because I usually have no clue. I’d cry every time I got lost in _high school._ There was a girl in one of my classes that would talk to me in that high-pitched voice when she was helping me with something. I remember talking to her about what my favourite colour was one time, lol.

Infantilisation is more than just association to children. It's denying autonomy and competency. Which unfortunately happens with the kpop area. The difference between an idol being sexy and cute is that one is often forced, unlike the other one. When idols do sexy concepts you can SEE their charisma they KNOW what they are doing and it is because they WANT to do it. When idols are asked to do aegyo and other childish stuff there is a reason why they get so shy, uncomfortable, and stiff. I am convinced people that baby their ADULT idols are very young, there is just no other explanation. As you grow into an adult and even in your teens you become mature both mentally and physically, your mindset isn't the same, and if you are old enough you know that.
