Hey everyone! Let's talk about computational linguistics and about my journey of becoming a computational linguist for a year. In this video, I'll be answering some common questions I'm getting about this field and my experience.
In my videos, I regularly share tips and tricks for learning foreign languages, especially English and French, as I am speaking and learning these languages. I also document my journey of transitioning from linguistics to software development and share the lessons I've learned while job searching and learning how to code. Subscribe to my channel to stay updated with my language learning and tech content!

Everything in existence is built from language. And since that's the case that means there must be something that understands that language otherwise it would be pointless

Hi Nastya, I'm a student major in French, and also want to be a computational linguist in the future. I am very inspired by your experiences ! Now i'm working on my thesis and my tutor told me to read some linguistics books in French, but i can only find some in English. Do you have any recommendations? Thanks!!

Hi Nastya. I just loved your video. I've seen your previous videos and I can say that, like you, I don't want to become a teacher or a translator. Not because I don't want to, but rather because I don't think I would be good enough. Besides, there are not a lot of opportunities in my country. Because of that I think that having a little background with programming could be interesting. I've studied five languages throughout my life but still I think my skills are pretty shitty (my German and English for instance are atrocious). I'm from Colombia by the way and this november I will get my language degree from a somewhat prestogious university, but instead of feeling proud, I feel nervous and discouraged from what I've heard from some graduated colleagues. I've seen though that there are some who have found opportunities as computational linguists in companies like Konecta without any computational background. Or at least none I'm aware of. I've seen some remote opportunities in Linkedin (mainly in the US) for people who have whether a computational background or a linguistics related background. I do have some background with corpus linguistics, syntax, morphology and phonemic transcriptions in Portuguese and Spanish (IPA to be specific). Personally I would love to do something related to TTS, ARS or voice recognition in general. Or something related to Praat. I think that a video about job hunting for computational linguists could be interesting. Perhaps a video about any portal besides Linkedin in which one could apply to related jobs for people with linguistic backgrounds.

I've also searched for chatbot designer opportunities but haven't found quite much.

"I don't think I would be good enough" - being consistent at something over a long period of time can make you change this opinion! But I get what you say. Programming experience could be great if you're looking for CL roles. Be on the lookout for contract roles via stuffing agencies - that's how you can potentially work with an American company, big or small. Linkedin is good for that but I don't know any other platforms

Привет, Настя! Спасибо тебе большое за то, что делишься информацией об этой специальности, ведь о ней очень мало что известно. Могу ли я попросить тебя, пожалуйста, посоветовать хорошие университеты, где об этой специальности расскажут лучше всего?

I have BA in TESOL, but I would like to continue my education in master of science in computational linguists. Do you think as I didn't study linguists for BA, can I apply for MS computational linguists?

Can one land a job as a language engineer or NLP engineer after a masters degree in computational linguistics? For example the postgraduate degrees in computational linguistics from UBC Vancouver and Montclair University.

I am a holder of B.A degree in Linguistics and now I am pursuing my MA in Computational linguistics, but I find difficulties in Computing, I am not good at Python and mathematics. So, I decided for PhD to specialise in Corpus linguistics. So, my question here is could you advice me with some courses or whatever concerned with Corpus linguistics?

I have a BA in English Literature and Linguistics and I am learning by myself how to code. I think you can pursue this as long as you put the time and effort.

How's the field now? I'm majoring in ComSci, and minoring in linguistics since I'm equally fascinated by the science of languages But I don't want to end up in some ML or AI-based NLP job or translation. I love phonetics and syntax and a bit of ethnolinguistics
