The 90s was probably the wild west of controller designs. Third party ones tended to go absolutely crazy trying to stand out and look different with no thought of build quality or how well they actually played games as long as they were cheaper than the official ones that's all that mattered most of the time.

The problem with the first-party N64 controller is that the analog stick wears out. So get a replacement when you can.

Unfortunately i have had nothing but trouble with the 8bitdo controllers. All the snes ones i got had incorrect button inputs with the dpad. The best snes controller i ever had was made by ascii and had the super famicom color scheme. This was a great video. I always like seeing controllers i never had.

Back then before the Wii, I imagined the N64 controller as a gun or crossbow because of the Z trigger and thinking how cool it be to include the NES Zapper technology. Two generations later Nintendo comes up with the Wii controller and nunchuck.

I bought the Gulikit Kingkong 2 Pro Switch Controller from Amazon for $70, it's better than the real Nintendo Switch Pro controller. It has good weight, but the best feature is the hall effect thumb sticks, that will never get the dreaded drift. Retrobit makes a great Hori N64 style controller for the Switch. But one of my favorite controllers is my red GameCube "McQueen" Cars controller. I've got a lot of odd PS1 & PS2 controllers, A LOT !!!🤣🤣🤣🤣 Great video as always !!!

i have always wondered why the dog bone nes controller's a and b buttons were angled the way they are because i always thought. why make the layout the opposite of what your thumb rests? then i had a thought just now... your middle finger and pointer finger on your right hand line up with them exactly if you hold the controller using it that weird arcade holding style. great video Erin thank you.

I remember that issue of Nintendo Power with all the third party SNES controllers. I was always intrigued by that single handed one that was just a control pad on one side and some small buttons elsewhere. Apparently you'd use that to game and the other hand to draw maps/etc in rpgs.

I saw the OG Neo Geo controller getting some love but have to say that a decent quality arcade stick is crazy underrated for ergonomic comfort. You're not holding anything, bearing any weight or have any fingers wrapped around anything. Just a lever your left hand can manipulate however it suits, and big buttons that fingertips can press without any significant force. Bliss.

Great video, I definitely want to see more. I'm glad you appreciate the N64 controller, I think it feels comfortable once you understand how it works, and it has a very unique shape. As for the Colecovision, I find it even worse than the Intellivision. I tried playing it at a convention, but that joystick was so stiff (or maybe there was an issue with that specific controller, I don't know). The Intellivision disk is not bad at all, it's just in the wrong position

The NES Max controller gets maligned too much. It's excellent for playing SHMUPs and games like Gun.Smoke. You can EASILY beat Castlevania and many other more difficult games with it if you press the black circle directly, treating it like a d-pad. The Beeshu Zippers are great (probably 2nd best controller for the NES, behind the Joycard Sansui SSS). And actually one of the colors was Pink. In addition to the Panasonic 3DO controllers, the popular Microsoft Sidewinder controllers were also designed to be "daisy-chained". Daisy-chaining controllers actually work pretty well. The Atari 5200 also had controller overlays.

My brothers and I would have welts on our thumbs from playing with the SNES controller (turbo controller for the SNES was the best). The N64 controller was far and away the best controller for a kid with small hands. When we got the Xbox and it came with The Duke controller (which my older brothers loved), I felt it was far too big, so I bought the s-type controller for me to use when it came out. (The Atari 2600 controller gave my hand cramps, but I never had an NES console, Wii, Gamecube, NeoGeo, CDI, 3DO, Megadrive, Mastersystem, Dreamcast, none of the Playstations, or PC controllers.)

My top three. Third place is the NES Advantage, couldn't put it down as a kid when I got it, used it in every game. Second place, ASCII Grip for the PS1 as it was also an amazing era for JRPGs and they went hand in hand. First place was a translucent red DualShock 2 I had. I guess it was the only translucent red item I ever had and I love red, so it was always just a little cooler than the solid red ones.

I like the Nintendo NES, the 1st-party controllers Nintendo's own Zapper, NES Advantage, NES Max, Power Pad, NES Satellite and the Four Score, and the 3rd-party NES controllers: Bandai America's the Super Controller, Mega Controller, Family Fun Fitness, Bandai/Shinsei’s Hyperstick Controller, Shinsei’s Hyper Variable Super Controller, Taito’s the Arkanoid Controller, Beeshu’s Hot Stuff, Jammer, Jazz Stick, Viper, Ultimate Superstick, Zoomer, Zipper, Zinger, and Gizmo Joystick, Acclaim’s Remote Controller, Double Player, and Power Player, LJN’s Roll & Rocker, Brøderbund’s U-Force, Camerica’s Freedom Connection and Supersonic The Joystick, Hudson Soft’s Joycard Sansui SSS, Mattel’s the Power Glove, Suncom’s Mother Ship, Nexoft’s The Dominator Master Control, The Dominator ProBeam Light Gun, Bondwell/QuickShot’s Deluxe Sighting Scope, QuickShot Joystick, QS-126 Joypad, Maverick 2, Flightgrip 2, Python 2, The Hot Seat, BDL Enterprises’ the Turbo Blaster, Konami’s LaserScope, Pressman’s the Speedboard, Light Wave’s GameSounds Receiver, IMN’s The Game Hander, Capcom’s Fighter Power Stick (designed for Street Fighter II; the dark colored joystick for the Super NES and NES). I seen 2 issues of Nintendo Power with all those 3rd-party Nintendo controllers and another one with all those 3rd-party Super Nintendo controllers. The Jan/Feb 1989 issue had the 1-2 page article featured the many different NES controllers and accessories like Bandai's Mega Controller, NES Max, Zoomer Joystick, NES Advantage, Super Controller, Remote Controller, Roll & Rocker, and the Remote Ultimate Superstick. The July/August 1989 issue had the page articlae lists and describes the many different NES controllers and accessories such as the Gizo Joystick, the Nintendo Double Player System, the Mother Ship joystick, NES Satellite, Competition Pro, Joycard Sansui SSI, and The Dominator Master Control. The June 1993 issue had the 4-page article lists and describes the many different Super NES controllers and accessories including Asciiware's Super Advantage and the Asciipad, STD Entertainment's SN Pro Pad, Capcom's the Capcom Fighter Power Stick, Hudsonsoft's the Super Multitap, Konami's Hypberbeam, Nintendo's own Super NES controller, the Super Scope, and the Super NES Mouse.

Lovely video! But no SNES controllers at all, you only used the regular one? 😀 In my area the SN Pro Pad and SN ProgramPad were seen quite often. That last one allowed programming for instance SFII moves for easy execution of whatever move. And for whatever reason I kind of expected the NES Advantage to pop up in the video. I mean, you got the SNK stick in it. And it's way better than that awful NES MAX. Even though you didn't mention it at all, I would like to add that for some reason a lot of people are unaware that the insert 'card' style for the Intellivision was also how the Atari Jaguar controller was meant to be used. I was glad to see you like the Dreamcast controller, that controller has a very mixed satisfaction base of users 😀 Do you like the D-pad of the Switch Pro controller? That's one of the most talked about parts of that controller and for a lot of people the only reason to not say it's the perfect controller.
@ARCWuLF
@ARCWuLF Год назад
The Colecovision controller DOES have overlays. That's what the slot on the right hand side is for. I also can't stand the NES "dog bone" controller, much for the same reason I find the original GameBoy uncomfortable: The "B" and "A" buttons are arranged in such a way that it makes putting the tip of your thumb on "B" while using the base of your thumb on "A" difficult, and when you play a lot of Mario games that becomes a problem.

Seemed very easy and intuitive on how to hold in my opinion. I had a 3DO for a little while. Did not like it at all. Quickly sold it. I remember playing Intellivision when I was like 4 and having the cards for the telephone pads. I even recall getting that one game to switch to the the other game that was hidden on the cartridge. You could make it jump to the other game by playing with the reset switch if I recall.

That Intellivision controller you have, Erin, is from the Intellivision II model. They were a serious step downward in quality other than the fact that they were detachable. The keypad is a flat membrane and the side buttons had no sense of feedback whether you pressed it or not. The original versions had soft rubber, reactive side buttons and a keyboard membrane that had a bubble like structure over each space that "popped" with each depression. The only thing that sucks is that they're hardwired tot he console.
