Hi, it's AK! In today's video, I explain the huge LACMA controversy that is currently taking over LA. Let me know your thoughts in the comments, is this controversy good? Can we talk about the beige? Subscribe & Like for more :)
I think this is a valid critique. It’s also very literal for Zumthor. I can imagine his Serpentine Pavilion being a concept model for what this should be: you experience tar, you touch it and it’s complimented by the light gallery space which makes it feel even more tar-like.
The same thing happened with the Getty Center. The designers of the garden are not in synch with museum it was a disaster when they opened it. The architects vision had natural stone and stairs with no rails.About 2 years after the museum opened they had lawsuits. The architects vision took a back seat to changes in the practical nature of the museum.
Very well put together! Although I agree that Zumthor may not be the best choice for this project. Knowing more about this project on his book “A Feeling of History”, there is this genuine optimism to give these artworks a real home hence he had to give up LACMA’s encyclopedic ambitions. (And yes, Zumthor had already played with curves way before this albeit mostly conceptually)
I didn't internal publishing at lacma and a few other things. Lacma was challenging enough to work at before. This change, Doesn't seem to consider the visitors, or the employees who try to make the exhibits a good experience.
