I’ve recently been replaying Pokemon Black and man, I can just feel the creativity and care put into that game.

What upsets me the most is that the most probable reason for all of this happening is that Game Freak refuses to grow and adapt and instead puts all the workload on ~100 people, I wouldn't be surprised if they're overworked to exhaustion just so they don't risk any leaks and keep development costs low.

The problem isn't "not every pokemon is in the games", the problem is, they claimed to upgrage graphics and animations at the cost of national dex. They didn't upgrage it enough/at all,considering the loss.

This really is the straw that broke the Caemrupt's back about Pokemon. It's very interesting to see

One critical thing missing from the above video is that Gen 7 already has HD models for all 809 Pokemon programmed into it. The graphics engine itself just downscales them after loading them so they fit onto the 3DS's 240p screen. For example, no new HD models had to be made for Let's Go (except the Meltan line and the Partner Pokemon); they were all copy-pasted over from USUM. This means that there was no need at all to cut Pokemon from the programming of SwSh.

Imo, the big issue here is their reasoning. Pokemon is one of the biggest, most profitable gaming IP's on the market. And after 23 years, we get the first full console mainline release. We moved from 3DS cartridges, which max out at 8GB to Switch cartridges which max out at 32GB, so hardware limitations are out of the picture. And there's the underlying issue: Technically, all 3D models already exist. Seeing how shoddy and low-poly some of the world assets in Sword/Shield are, it's just nincompoop to say that they couldn't have imported all models from Ultra Sun/Moon. Especially since the engine used in Sword/Shield uses slight cel shading, which can mask low poly models pretty effectively. And animations? Please, let's not pretend were anywhere near Pokemon Stadium here, a game released 19 years ago. The animations shown so far have been basic, to say the least. I, personally, simply don't buy the reasoning here. A studio working on an IP of that magnitude which has been printing money for over 20 years now are saying it would have been too much work to import and maybe upscale existing models and rigs? Too much work to give them animations as stiff as those already shown? Sorry, but that just sounds ridiculous. I'd get it if they went straight from sprite art to 3D models, but the models present in Ultra Sun/Moon are perfectly suitable, match the style and are sufficiently animated. So yeah, i totally get why people are upset about the news. Because the game looks and sounds to be incredibly rushed. And for a mainline Pokemon game, especially it's first main entry on a decently powerful home console, that's just a very poor show.

You really hit all the targets there with the criticism, but I think there's one smaller point that you missed. Namely, you did talk about the anger slowly starting to form over the past few years, but I'd even go back to ORAS. Namely, when they cut the Battle Frontier, one of the most beloved parts of Gen 3 and 4, with the explanation (correct me if I'm wrong) being 'Well, we were gonna do it but it's not like anyone really cared about it anyways, you were just gonna be on yoru phone'. I.e: "We didn't think you'd want it that much, we're not sorry". Really, I'd almost say this goes back to the start of Generation 6 where all this problems started, with the criticism of three things, namely X and Y's much lower difficulty (which isn't that much of an issue), X and Y's treatment of event legendaries now being gimmies, instead of the events they had before like Heatran in Gen 4/5, or Shaymin in 4. People didn't like just being given a legendary, they like going and exploring (once they do the proper steps by unlocking said events) and finding that legendary, doing the event and getting the legendary that way, earning it. Finally, the biggest problem was the critical lack of after game. Once you finish the game, there's not much to do. The main point from all of this? None of those problems were fixed in future games. ORAS was a joke in terms of difficulty, not being scaled right at all with the EXP Share, and even without it. They fixed the legendary problem somewhat with the Delta Episode, but other than that, you really shouldn't expect much other than 'Go fly around, good luck'. Finally, one of ORAS's best after game features was cut, leaving the Battle Chateau that nobody had been a fan of. With the move to Sun and Moon, this difficulty issue was addressed again as while there were some more fun fights, such as the Totems, the game was still pretty easy. It wasn't as bad as before, but it was still pretty easy. Furthermore, unless I'm mistaken, they didn't give any thought to event legendaries at all, essentially being given away. Finally, we had the same lack of after game. Once again, this was touched on with the Ultra Beast searching, but still it wasn't much at all. I personally haven't played USUM, so I can't say if things changed, but I'll assume that not much changed in a year after the remake in terms of these issues (outside of the Ultra Necrozma fight giving more difficulty and fun). With all that in mind, people were already getting annoyed by this same formula with the after game, the same quality essentially for the battles and such, the same difficulty and this exploded not because of the pokemon missing (though it was a great part of it), but because the excuse of 'We're trying to make a more quality game' when we can see from the footage that it looks like not much has changed, and that was the straw that broke the camels back. People don't want to give Gamefreak another chance as they've already shown their laziness for the past handful of years, they want something to change. I'd say that the after comment of buckling down was a really really bad idea on Gamefreak's part as all it did was fan the fire. Try telling an angry mob that it sucks they're mad, but nothing's gonna change, it's not going to work. Personally, I'm voting with my wallet, I'm skipping this gen period, I'm not going to lay back and tell Gamefreak I'm okay with worse quality games. We've had Breath of the Wild come from the Switch, a masterpiece of the game and Gamefreak can't be bothered to put any effort in. EDIT: One thing you *did* miss however was that there was an official comment from Gamefreak saying 'We're not putting the main focus on this pokemon game, it's a side project while we work on Town', which was another thing that got the fans mad, that Gamefreak has so much potential for bringing the main series to console and they're wasting it all for no real reason

My biggest problem is that Masuda's explanations make no sense and I don't think they're being honest. Animations and models are obviously reused from previous generations. And having every Pokémon in the game has never had a negative impact on battling

The annualization of the Pokemon series has been slowly killing it for years. The design philosophy behind these games is fundamentally flawed, and without any significant change being made, these problems were inevitable.

I'm part of the people who are just kinda disappointed. I love having all of my old pokemon with me and that's mainly why it makes me sad. Another reason is because there are a lot of fan favourites being kicked out. I'm not being Toxic I'm just again, disappointed.

Pokemon is no longer a priority for them. Pokemon Home is the replacement for pokemon bank that they barely did anything with. They claim the work and quality involved would be too much, and then proceed to show us animations and quality that's virtually the same as on the handhelds. The anger is very much justified when they lay all these dominoes right out in front of us

I'd believe that if Gamefreak didn't already make HD models for all the pokemon (gen 1 - 6 at the time) in order to save time on development for future titles. Gamefreak is just lying about how making these games is difficult when they've had the core battle system down since Ruby/Saphire.

My problem is that Game Freak is running on an archaic design philosophy of churning out a game every year. It's not as easy as it was years ago. The jump to 3D makes designing stuff harder by far. A delayed game can be a good game, but a bad game is bad forever.

To be fair, the "it's for balance" defense is laughable to put it nicely. Balance wasn't a thing in the mainline series since... Well, from the very beginning, actually.

It's not just the lack of Pokemon. It's the fact that gamefreak clearly doesn't like making Pokemon games anymore and it shows. 1) The lack of any major graphical improvements 2) The switching from mega evolutions to just making the Pokemon big 3) the lack of any unique animations to the point where most attacks are just the Pokemon in their idle state bouncing around a bit 4) the challenge almost completely being removed from the game in the hopes that it'll attract more people to the game 5) post game content getting lazier and lazier with each new game 6) ignoring the audience who built you up in the first place and calling them a bunch of whiners when they have very legitimate complaints Just imagine if Mario Odyssey came out and it only had 3 worlds, no new enemies and the same sound effects from Mario 64. Would it be too much to get angry over that?

I’m calling it now, there’s going to be an unbalanced meta game due to a handful of Pokémon that would have been otherwise kept in check by Pokémon excluded from the Galar Dex. Game Freak talked about better visuals and better animation and both are recycled. They also tend not to update their content until a new game drops so I’m doubtful of balance patches. Plus they change rules for VGC regularly and have already been able to create ban lists, there’s no reason they couldn’t have used a ban list approach per season to keep battles fresh. Speaking of patches, I wouldn’t have minded this so much if they hadn’t shot down updating the game through patches to let more Pokémon in. You’re right in that they can’t push it back but we’re at a time and on a system where you can update games after they’re out but they already said they wouldn’t do that. Pokémon is one of my favorite things in the world and this coming from Game Freak really sucked out all the hype I had for these games. I was really excited for the idea of console Sinnoh remakes, but I don’t know if I’d even want them with this policy in place.

I think Dynamax is stupid. Megas were fun, Zmoves were less fun but unique and enjoyable, Dynamax looks like they’re just putting a Pokémon under a magnifying glass with nothing special but the size

Personally, I'm really pissed off about this whole situation. Not only are there only a select few Pokemon that are going to return instead of all of them like before, they're also giving some very flimsy excuses in an attempt to justify this action.

Whats funny is when they first announced this game was in development. They promised ALL POKEMON and then they did the e3 announcement and exposed their lie and hype

After 11 years of being in the pokemon community this has been the angriest and mean I've seen the community

Honestly, I think the way they handled it was the worst. It's an excellent case study in terrible PR. First, they had everyone pretty hyped about the games after showing trailers and gameplay footage. Until the last three minutes of the Treehouse session, everything was going swimmingly. Fans had observed that the graphics weren't exactly top notch, but the hype of Switchmons finally happening overshadowed that. Then Masuda dropped this bombshell as a parting remark. One of the last official words about the games at E3 was a piece of seriously bad news. Then "Goodbye, we will return with more news at an unspecified time, and not a second before". Meaning this bit of bad news was the last lingering bit of information in fans' heads. Epic blunder right there. Like farting just as you rise from your chair at the end of a job interview. And yet that's only the beginning. There was no apology. No explaining why this was a hard choice. Just a matter-of-fact statement, snuck into the middle of a longer paragraph like it's no big deal. "The professor is named Magnolia. The second Gym Leader Nessa likes spaghetti. From now on, the core series Pokémon games won't contain all Pokémon anymore. The Champion wears a cape because he's the champion." No respect for the severity of the news, as if it wouldn't matter. The lack of context made it even worse. "We chose to take away some Pokémon because it was too much work for us." They're explaining why it is convenient for them, but not why it makes the game better for the players. The effective message is "We gave up and the game is worse now, hope you still like it enough to pay full price for it." That's taking consumer loyalty for granted as an unlimited resource, which is a huge no. Failing Marketing 101 as well as Hindsight 101 right on the spot. Then the flimsy excuses. I can fully and completely guarantee that every single Pokémon fan with the means to follow that session, with the means to hear Masuda's message, also has access to various fan sites/channels/communities who'd rip the excuses to shreds. If the viewers aren't savvy enough to find those fan outlets, they wouldn't be savvy enough to view the Direct in the first place. Absolutely none of the viewers would take the excuses of "balance" and "too much work" at face value in the long run. And then they completely let go of the narrative, leaving fans to seek out other fans to understand the implications of the statement. As stated above, TPC had no intention to fill the roaring silence after Masuda's shocking piece of news, but outlets like Pokémon RU-vidrs or forum threads would happily spell out the worst-case scenario for you. The Pokémon Company doesn't even *have* a social media presence to communicate with fans. Thus, there's no way for them to put out the fire. The only thing fans could do was to watch the trailers and gameplay over again in light of the bad news, and conclude that Game Freak made a sacrifice of several hundred Pokémon (the number is an assumption, but that's all we have to go by since Game Freak didn't provide a number themselves) without giving much in return for it. Better graphics? Upon closer examination, they are poo. Better game balance? Upon closer examination, the "Kalos Pentagon" system introduced two generations ago could be used to the exact same result, without reducing the amount of content in the game. It can't be either of the given excuses, TPC is silent so they can't even explain it if they turn out to be valid after all, and so we're left to draw our own conclusions. Surprise surprise, fans conclude that Game Freak is lazy. I'm going out on a limb and assuming Game Freak isn't being lazy, that there is a hype-worthy feature that fans will love but which wasn't feasible to implement for every Pokémon. But that feature is meant to be the centrepiece of the next big announcement. On TPC's announcement calendar, it probably says "Late February, announce games. Early June, showcase Wild Area and Dynamax. Late August, showcase other big feature". But August is way, way too late to give context for a piece of bad news dropped in June. Dexit completely sidetracked the fandom, crashed the hype train and generated a screaming mob. Whatever they show next needs to be a seriously great piece of news to get the fans back. It's just that nobody has any faith it will be. Congrats Pokémon. Now go join Sonic the Hedgehog, Sim City, Rollercoaster Tycoon and Star Wars Battlefront in the "We were beloved, took it for granted, grew complacent, made awful decisions and learned nothing from it" corner.

The reason I'm upset about this is one you kind of touched on, but not in the way I'm upset about it. They're going to rush this game out, charge us $60, and take out one of the core features that has been a staple in every single Pokemon game since Gen 2, essentially removing their classic tagline with this decision, and what's going to happen next year? They're going to remake the game like they always do. And the announcement that comes out of that? NATIONAL DEX RETURNS! I'm pissed off about it because they're purposefully releasing a worse game because they're getting too greedy to give the game the full development time it deserves and so that they can double dip by releasing the game that they should've originally sold us as the remake.

I'm not mad that not every pokemon will be in the game, I am mad because it is a representation that GameFreak aren't trying at this point.

This is no Mario Oddesy and this certainly isn’t no Breath of the Wild. This is an upscaled 3ds game plain and simple.

I don't think people would be pissed about the Dex if their justification of better graphics and animation wasn't also a farce. Pretty sure the quality of animation is terrible for switch standards. Charizard's G-max move doesn't even come from its mouth....

I think a large part of the issue comes down to how this was handled. We were set up to believe that this was going to be another standard game where even if there was no proper national dex, we could at least transfer up like in S&M. Notably this creates a weird use case where you could have that partner you love so much, say the hypothetical Breloom from RS, that you have painstakingly transferred up to Ultra Sun. If Shroomish and Breloom aren't available in S&S and you drop your 17 year old partner into pokemon home either because you didn't realize and the service doesn't explicitly warn you, or you make a mistake, now your legacy pokemon is trapped in digital limbo. Moreover the initial announcement of Home primed us to think there would be a focus on trading up and making it easier to interact with the mechanics of transference. To have that be dismissed out of left field creates whiplash with the expectations that had been presented. Add to that the apparent lies about quality of models and animations, the rather bland and uninteresting UI in the gameplay demo, and we have a pokemon experience that seems pretty lacking. The argument of "it's just a game" for me falls flat, I'm not that personally torn up about it but I do understand how important this series and certain aspects of it have become for some people. It's a way for me and my partner, for example, to be able to spend a great deal of time together without really having to worry about where we are or if we can fit in another hour of our limited time. We worked together during ORAS to complete our national dex and it took us a few months but it served as an amazing experience. Similarly battling has a major role for some people. I'm not a huge competitive player but I'll jump into it now and again and generally try to find lesser used pokemon just for the fun of springing an Emboar on people, even if I usually get myself flounced. The fact that elements you care about remain even though ones you don't care for have been removed I think does contribute to the disconnect you face. However, what if we got a pokemon game where shinies just didn't exist. Or where there was barely any single player story and it focused almost exclusively on multiplayer battles or gimmick content. We as a community cherish and love different aspects of the game, and there can, maybe even should, be a sense of camaraderie when part of our community loses something dear to them.

If the 3DS can handle all 800+ Pokemon (while introducing new mechanics), the switch really has no excuse to nuke half of it away, especially when the "high quality" they're claiming isn't that high.

The "I mainly use the new pokemon anyway" thing is something I've heard a lot. But here's the thing: shouldn't you have the choice? The choice to either use all new pokemon or exclusively your old team, or hey, maybe a mix of both?

I was starting to feel the burn when the games started having no post mane game contend; in Sun and Moon they just give you legendaries while they where events in the 2D games, and now Let's Go just has master trainers.(I'm not going to start with the battle frontier) They are including less contend over the years, and because of this this starts to feel far more like a CoD game where they first started to make season passes and then promised feture later down the line because they can't finnish the game fully in time.

Personally, it doesn't bother me much, but to have hyped up Pokemon Home and other stuff that helps to bring forward pokemon, just to then announce that the service won't even really be all that useful with the new gen, just kinda slimey.

its simple. pokemon isnt the only franchise suffering from deadline crunch. im 110% ok with waiting a little bit longer for a polished product. it also gives more time for the game to marinate its hype.

I knew Pokémon would lose it's high chair, but I feel like the way it's happening is very bad. Pokémon has a LOT more issues than being able to catch every single monster in the game.

Voice of reason... Agree with your summary 100%. The outcry has a deeper-rooted origin than just lack of Pokemon... It's a disappointment with the direction and approach to the franchise / main series as a whole.

I really wouldn't have cared for doing away with the national pokedex if the game looked amazing and the animations were as good as pokemon stadium, colosseum and battle revolution.

One of the greatest things about Pokemon was there were so many ways to play, and so many ways to express your love. TCG, Manga, TV Show, video games, plushies, etc. And then, in the games, casually doing the story, playing competitive, and collecting. I played the games to collect. That's what I liked most; seeing my boxes lined up with an instance of each pokemon. Sure. There's a thousand other ways to enjoy pokemon. But instead of thinking of it like you cards rotating out, to us it feels more like they eliminated the ability to play the card game at all, by comparison. What good is there in collecting for a collection that can never be complete? So yeah, I'm mad. It's fine that you're chill, but you have to understand this comes from a place of love. Game Freak is showing it's faults at the seams like Bethesda has been. If they don't shape up and use their mountain of wealth to create better products, they're going to find their fans phasing out and ceasing to defend their actions.

To be fair to the WIngulls, if nothing else, their Pokédex entries since Emerald have talked about how they don't flap their wings to fly and just glide around.

The Ultra games were the first Pokemon games I didn't finish, and now these will be the first games I skip outright.

Im not mad about the National Dex not being in Sword and Shield. But when the game design and graphics start looking cheap, Lazy and Reused thats when I get angry. I mean floating parts of walls, t-posing wingulls, N64/Gamecube era looking trees, basically all models and animations brought back from Gen 7. Its getting stupid now. I mean The Pokemon Company is basically only focusing on the mobile games. And they have completely forgotten about the true side games (Mystery Dungeon, Stadium type games). And honestly speaking. Im still gonna buy the game. Im still gonna enjoy playing it. But the Pokemon Fan inside me is going to be slightly disappointed. I mean the pokemon company's focus is In the wrong place. The mobile games are called side games for a reason. They should just focus on the main series of games.

That T-posing Wingull just oozes personality. Seriously Game Freak is used to selling a ton of copies with little to no effort. Time for a wakeup call.

Remember, consumers are not allowed to act dissatisfied. If you do not accept what is given to you by our glorious corperate overlords, clearly you are just being entitled.

I would be totally okay with the whole dexit thing if they actually had new high quality animations and models for the old pokemon that did make the cut. But they don't. Nothing has changed about these 3ds assets, there was no extra work involved in including them because they've had their entire suite of models, animations and textures finished and on every 3ds cartridge since 2006, including unused ones like the running animations. The fact that game freak have straight up lied to us about their reasons is an insult to the fanbase. It's clear to everyone that the real reason they had to rush this game out with so much missing and such dodgy graphics is that they're a tiny team (about 140, which is further divided into the Town team, aka the main team, and the pokemon team) working on an absurdly punishing yearly release schedule. And since Game Freak isn't owned by nintendo, only the Pokemon IP, their employees aren't benefiting from Nintendo's recent stance on prioritizing work/life balance.

The "why" is definitely the biggest reason. I wasn't upset about the decision at all until I heard why they said they couldn't include them.

The thing that really bugs me is that people claim "they can't model all 800 previous Pokémon!!" when they don't need to. When they made the models for X and Y, they made sure they were high quality models that were able to be used in the future. That's why they worked in Pokémon Go (and Let's Go, a game that is on the Switch ffs). Even if, for some reason, they have to reanimate the models, each Pokémon has like 6 seconds of unique animation (idle, contact move, non-contact move, hit, faint, idle flair, each only taking about a second), meaning if they had to reanimate everything it'd be like 9 minutes of animation. No, the reason why they can't make all the Pokémon work is because of the Dynamax mechanic, requiring even higher quality models. It's so dumb.

I’ve been waiting for this video ever since the day the news came out. I personally am most angry about this news because i’m a shiny hunter, and this means i may not be able to keep all of my years of work in Gen 8.

I think it wouldn't be much of an issue if Game Freak wasn't so dishonest about their reasons

Personally, I'm getting kinda tired of the X/Y models. I would be totally fine if they just delayed it a little bit to work more on that stuff. oops I forgot 99% of the comments are about this... '~'

You have a similar view to a lot of people who dont mind the change. You dont mind it, it doesnt bother you. Thats a totally fine way to feel, but its not as if you feel that the games are improved for the removal of all those pokemon. Thats my core argument. For some, its fine, for others it isnt fine, but for no one is it improved. Therefore, it is a bad change.

*Remove Pokemon* That sucks, maybe some of the animations will be improved with less Pokemon to work on? NOPE! I fully expect Blastoise to still not be able to shoot from his cannons.

My biggest gripe is with the home debacle. Like why should I pay an extra yearly fee and potentially an online membership when I can't use the full extent of the app. That's like buying a audible book but every year you can listen to a different section of the book and then it's removed. I only transfer my older pokemon after I finish the game and home is going to come out a few months later and bank only updated a few months later after every release so the excuse for everyone wanting to use their pokemon right away is misguided. Why should I pay to keep the pokemon I love in a box until a game lets them in years in the future when I could just keep them in the 3ds and know I can actually use them. I read somewhere that glameow hasn't been in a regional dex in over 10 years so it might never be allowed to transfer to the switch games. I don't do competitive or battle outside of the main story but it doesn't mean I don't feel attached to Pokemon I find. I'm more of a shiny hunter but seeing my shinies in HD would be amazing. If they wanted to balance the game they could have used the stamping system in xy and sumo where native Pokemon can have the symbol like the Pentagon and only they can be played in competitive. They got rid of mega evolutions and Z moves for big pokemon. I know how hard programming is I can't program to save my life but my friend makes his own video games and ive seen his struggle but I don't see how that excuses game freak, x and y specifically had future proof models and everything seems ported anyway. I've been getting stale with pokemon lately but this was the last straw for me.
