I love how you put into words some of the thoughts I had floating around while I was reading the book. The characters are all messy, and I felt like it was pretty heavy-handed. It turned out to be one of those books I just couldn't finish. The plot seemed good, but the book is just such a brick.

Same, I need to care about at least one character instead of muttering shut up, shut up to myself while reading.

I found Yellowface enjoyable and messy. The entitlement of June was epic. And she couldnt stop herself. "I need to write what white people don't see on a daily basis"

Agreed! It was such an engaging read

This book has been so hyped and I just don't get it. Like you said none of the characters in this book are at all likeable. Although I am okay with a character or two like this, as you stated everyone is "messy," and this was just not an enjoyable read for me. I usually call books or movies like this Train Wrecks as they are almost painful to watch/ read. I did not end up finishing the book. I searched for other reviews to see if the book redeems itself in the end or if there is some sort of magical twist, but from what I have gathered from other reviews the end left a lot of readers wanting. Having read that several times I decided not to finish it. I'm honestly disappointed as the synopsis sounded like this would be an interesting read.

I really loved this one. I felt like the ending left me feeling a bit unsatisfied, but I assume that was intentional, as you said. Still a thought-provoking read!

I am loving this book. Your review was and it is surely thought provoking as you said regarding the book. RF Kuang really outdid herself in the book and bought things into light that needs to be known. This is my first time reading her writing and I am already mesmerized by it!

So true. Sadly there has been so much publishing drama that it doesn't surprise me anymore

Thanks for the review! I am definitely curious about this one, R. F. Kuang has so much to say about social, political and current things but her writing style in Babel did not resonate well with me. I'm hoping that the switch to contemporary fiction comes with a change in style which will alow me to enjoy it more.

I haven't read Babel yet, so I can't comment on how it compares. Hopefully the writing in this one works better for you!

Thanks! Thought provoking is a very way to describe this book
@TheSwordAndThePenREFLECTIONS
I've read The Poppy War trilogy. It was very interesting, and worth reading at least once, but I will probably not read it again--not because I thought it wasn't good. I just didnt enjoy any characters enough to want to follow them on that adventure again, and I read for enjoyment. 😂 I did enough reading about messy characters in college to know i kust dont care for them. Best part of Poppy War is that it brought more attention to the Sino Japanese wars and Maoist Era China. Its an area of history that deserves more attention. Yellowface is one ill probably pass on. 😅 Sounds like its all the things i am not particularly drawn to. Have you read Babel?

I have only read the first book in The Poppy War trilogy and I really enjoyed it, but I'll admit the character work is not the strongest. I generally like historical fiction or historical fantasy that brings my attention to something in history I didn't know about previously. I understand passing on this book. It's definitely not going to click with everyone. I haven't read Babel yet, but I plan to soonish
@TheSwordAndThePenREFLECTIONS
@Reading with Rebecca Nicole Yeah, character arcs were not a strong point in TPW trilogy.... I suspect there was a point being made about people not really changing, tho. But it was still really interesting. Get ready for some dark stuff if you read more of TPW trilogy.

Great review. I'm not sure what the author tried to say with this, because as you said, even June wasn't a nice person

I am sorry but I don't understed the hype. Maybe it is because of background, maybe because I strongly disagree with author if it comes to some statement, maybe because I am upset how publishing industry works. Writers can create their chracters like they want. Athena (someone who might be Kuang's alter ego has annoyoing personality but also June and she is not protagonist and I assume Kuang knew that reception of June (sorry for my English is not my first language) will be bad and she is happy about that...I don't know how to explain. When Kuang tells us some truths via June's lips it is so wise and humble but she is perfectly aware that white author couldn't do the same. Also I have problem to separate Kuang voice and narrator voice.

The main theme about race was a total after thought. This supposed main theme about race was a joke. That topic was a after thought and at times it was added in way more heavy and at the strangest times. Like if calling someone a whore or pig for not ssying thank u is normal but using racist instead. It wasn"t warrantrd and sounds dumb It started off more like a fatal attraction, mean girls focus. I think people that knew what the book was being marketed for liked it way more then me. I just heared it was good. No idea that was suppose to be tbe main focus. It started off as a one sided frenemy trope. Page after page bitching about a person that seems to be so nice and kind. Stealing her work 1. a kid could have predicted that was going to happen with 0% chance of success. It also was aparent that the do's and don'ts of publishing a book and this ladies stuggles with her mental health were way more evidente then racr. This was such a Dull book . Very Far Fetched. Redundant, Plot hole.
