Scrims don't diffuse light. They take off intensity but don't change the characteristics of the light. Silks do that.

@Frank-Ding

@@farticusthegreat5685 diffusion reduces intensity AND softens light whereas scrims only reduce intensity. You should know what you're talking about before calling other people idiots.

Though scrims and nets are not intended to diffuse light, they actually do break up the edges in the shadows a tad.

Some very interesting insight. As an aside, you can tell that the Arri Fresnel on the right is an HMI from the thickness of the cable (head to ballast cable is thinker than standard TRS).The use of flags for the background is very interesting. Doing all of those effects from a single source is a skillful move, if possibly a little complex. I think a profile spot/ellipsoidal in CTB, shuttered correctly and a smaller HMI could produce an identical effect with a much cleaner setup. And Cardiff, Wales.

Nice analysis and explication. I doubt that they are using sunlight, just because it is constantly changing, which is why most professional projects don't risk their schedules (and therefore $$) on trusting that everything will go perfectly so they can use El Sol as their key light. I think they're probably using a big-ass tungsten light (with CTB), HMI, or Maxi-Brute(s) to fill that big scrim over the windows, so that they can have total control. It's a nice look. They do this a lot in shows like THIS IS US, to great effect. I'm watching from Redlands, in southern California.

good tutorial only thing is when you explained the cookies. Cookies aren't used to mimick leaves they are actually used to break up a flat surface and give it texture. If you are shooting against lets say a solid yellow wall and if its looks too flat we would put a cookie up to give it texture. You aren't really suppose to see the pattern. If you put the cookie close to the light source the pattern will be very subtle but it will be just enough to break up the flatness of a surface.

Great video!! Want to ask that are there more lights outside the window? Since the sun moves fast, the shadows won’t match for a long time scene, also curios about how much power is that hmi inside the room...

Careful about talking about diffusion when talking about the effects of nets (you called them scrims). Though there is a very slight diffusing of the light, it’s meant to reduce (slow down) the light.

Nice video. If i could point something out... that isn't sunlight coming through the window. That's artificial exterior light made to look like the sun. The points to look at which are the giveaways are first the light spilling over onto the ceiling. most of the light in this scene is coming from the hmi light and true sunlight flows in one direction because its single source so if it were the sun it couldn't produce that much floor shadow along with the spill over on the ceiling. even if they just happened to film this scene at the perfect part of the day to utilize the sun (which if any of you have ever worked on set you know that happens rarely) it wouldn't project that way. It looks to me like the sun was probably high noon and wasn't used in this shot at all. This whole scene is artificial light and what we aren't seeing is the huge tungsten light outside. If you look closely at the white curtain on the right you can see a huge light spot in the middle of it. That is exterior light being diffused to provide an overall soft feel. you can actually see how the backsides of the c-stands are being illuminated by it.

@TheVedicWayChannel 7 лет назад
Nice explanation, thanks! Ridiculously expensive lights and cumbersome setup, but the results are great. I think the most frustrating thing about artificial lights is definitely getting the color temperature right. Could this same shot be achieved by only using natural light, mirrors, reflectors and so on?

I was looking fot this BTS , thanks!! When you mention that the HMI is lighting the girl a little bit and the scrim is there to low the exposure on her, is it right? Could you share where you took this information from? Because I think the HMI is there just to create the triangle on the background, not to light her at any part because that would give her a very hard light.

Respectfully, there is some misinformation in this video. First it’s an M18 so it’s daylight. Second. There is diffusion going onto the teacher only. The other half is hard light going to the chalkboard. Since the teacher is diffused, the chalkboard needs to be skinned down to MATCH the teacher so a double net was added that is so the teacher and sun streak are roughly equal. Not so the teacher “pops out” from the background. Lastly, that was the key light. I’m sure the natural light from the windows did reach the teacher but no where near the light from the key.

Is the Cucoloris or the Cookie close to what you call a GOBO? I am a self taught lights designer in a theater company here in the Philippines and I have learned and validate some of the info I know also because of some of your uploads. Is there any other name for the HMI lights? (currently learning how to light in videos, as I thought that it would be the same! Hahaha. And as far as I have noticed it is slightly far what I expected) HAHAHA. Thanks for the video. I am currently watching and going through your videos, I hope you don't mind! :D
@LeoMajors
@LeoMajors 7 лет назад
Anj Enriquez Film & Theatre student here! A cucoloris is pretty much the same as a GOBO. One thing I habe heard is that a GOBO is supposed to give defined, specific shapes, while a cookie just generally adds texture.
