We can't really blame the public for Sonchiriya collapsing at the box office. The sole blaim lies with RSVP who not only marketed the movie terribly, they completely butchered the release. Shows didn't come online till Thursday night and Friday morning, the release was in barely 700 screens pan India with odd show timings. Plus then it turned out that more than half of the theatres are running a dubbed version which the actors have no idea exists.
Correct.. even if you want to watch.. there is no proper show timings.. producer didn’t fight for the movie.. they never believed this could earn their money back.
dubbed version as in? I thought the movie was a mix of budelkhandi and hindi. I've no idea, hasn't released in theaters near me and waiting for it to come online
@@r.22r the small town formula is gonna run dry pretty soon.. its becoming cliche anyways, you cant explore too many topics from a small town.... which direction will bollywood go next then???
Bareilly Ki Barfi and Raanjhanaa are set in small towns in India but people loved it because they had a strong script and story with heartfelt performances. Luka Chuppi was so idiotic and unrealistic
@@r.22r yeah maybe but many directors are making better, realistic and more entertaining films based in small towns too but they haven't done that good in box office. The kartik aaryan hype plus his success and charm with sonu titu does have a role here for sure
Trollers will troll but it's just your opinion about a movie which you convey through this channel so don't pay much heed and don't get much effected Anupama! Cheers to good films and honest reviews! 🤘
Yeah i think u r quite honest Anupama (a lil snobbish but honest :P) n clearly a hard core bollywood fan. U shudnt need to justify ur statements, haters gonna hate, just chill n glow :) film companion is a great channel!
Man I've never felt this horrible about a film not doing well. Guys please please go watch sonchiriya. Also rahul I don't know how you kept you cool for that question at 15:22 . Why do you even answer these questions?
@AGASTHYA just a thought - don't you think that was the point? Hero doesn't need to have charisma, he just need to do good and continue doing it however bleak the situation is, he doesn't Need tough ideal body to deliver justice and i think it was perfectly casted for. Whole point of the film was any one can be a hero- who never gives up
Oh wow yr..Just loved this talk..And 🤗👏👏👏For appreciated the #Sonchiriya for his so hard work putted in the movie. And specially thanks #Sucharita for SSR❤🔥..Lovely comment. Found one who genuinely liked SSR in critic side.💥💥🔥
These group sessions are way more fun to watch than some forced-down-the-throat 'comedy' like _Total Dhamaal_ And agree with Rahul here, _Dhamaal_ 2007 was actually quite funny in a juvenile kind of way
You’ve convinced me to go watch Sonchiriya, thank you! I love this channel, thank you for this too :) I’ve always wondered why a movie doing well at box office is believed to mean that it is being liked by the audience? It has happened to me so many times, when I have walked out of the cinema during or at the end of the movie feeling disappointed(Simmba)!! But the money is gone, the damage is done! So may be, us, the audiences should be not ‘blamed’ for the success of nonsensical movies like Simmba because we do not get to see them for free, and have no option but to risk it! :( #hindicinemafan
if you watch a lot of movies... then you might develop a natural instinct of differentiating good content over average ones from cast and trailers.. your judgement will improve and you wont have to take risks all the time.
The text reviews of Film Companion really do need good marketing because Rahul Desai's writing skills are just AMAZE. I read his reviews and think "how did he come up with that??" 👐🏻
Personally, while I liked Manmarziyan, a part of me thought that the overt use of Punjabi affecting the movie made sense. Punjabi is not Hindi, and especially for people like me for whom Hindi, while we are comfortable at it, is a second language (and we are translating, in our minds), having to translate twice over is a difficult proposition. Just give subtitles to quasi-Punjabi movies, guys. I don't have problems.
After I came to know golmal again was a massive hit I do not get shock when movies like total dhamal run well at b.o coz for me golmal again was crap I tries but couldn't watch it even on TV
One of the reasons for Sonchirya's failure might be the lack of music/album. Music helps keep the movie fresh in peoples mind since they're played on every radio/music channels and which makes the audience to check the movie. they've should have at least had one music track (remix hi sahi)
Sonchiriya does not release in so many theaters or get enough screens.. This is heart breaking. I really want to watch it but could not because I did not find suitable show time or theater near my location.
Luka Chhupi works cause there is an young audience for it, trying to speak in English and wish fulfilling their fantasies with these run of the mills movies that don't strain and stress their minds like their JEE and govt services exam papers. All of that goes against Son Chiriya. Sure, if your friend is generous enough to buy you a ticket for it, you would go watch it because you've heard so much praise from the critics. But, there is no push for it on its own to people who probably feel bad every time they spend money in cinemas.
/trying to speak in English and wish fulfilling their fantasies with these run of the mills movies that don't strain and stress their minds like their JEE and govt services exam papers. All of that goes against Son Chiriya./ That is just your hackneyed even vacuous stereotype about something which you do not understand , what does speaking a specific language has to do with selection of the movie can it be argued that so called existentialist drudge bordering on spiel like sonchiraya is made because supercilious psueds want to appear edgier by watching and expounding their narrow grasp on philosophy ? so try to gain some perspective .
@@amritanshuupadhyay8269 Dude! I am not passing a judgement here. I've lived and breathed among the young lot I've mentioned in my comment. This is an observation. I am only acknowledging the existence of a certain kind of audience for a movie like Luka Chhupi.
It wasn't thaaat difficult to watch. It wasn't gritty or there wasn't any rape or chopping biff heads scene. It's just that it was a real real movie. We read news headlines like father in law raped bahut and 12 year old child brutalized, these many men killed police men killed etc. If critics can't see that and look through how great that movie is which unapologetically talks about caste system, it doesn't Just talk about it, it portrays the caste system. I trust film companion for movie review and only if approved by you all watch the movie, however 3 starts was too less for a masterpiece like sonchiriya. It was such a deep movie. Nobody wins at the end. It's Just a shame that such an honest and unapologetically great movie isn't being received well. Even Gujjar falls prey To it at the end. Sonchiriya deserves 4 stars atleast.
I do want to watch sonchiriya movie but the screen is only one in my city n luka chuppi got all other 7-8 screens so we went to watch luka chupi and liked it. When we went for sonchiriya the ticket price was way too higher than the luka chuppi so didn't watch the movie. Hope it comes online soon
I would love to have Anupama talk about her diet and lifestyle ...like what she eats and what she doesn't ! She is glowing all the time and whatever she is doing is definitely working for her. Please share!
Anupama and Sucharita are two very strong persona with always having a strong pov. And what i say about Rahul. Rahul is the only brave man with that cute face. Very very cute person.
Spielberg is against the notion that Netflix films should be considered for film awards as they are technically streaming movies with a short window at selected theatres.
@@kaykaykarwa so there are some who support Spielberg but many feel its not right, a movie should be considered for oscars irrespective of how its available to watch and that it provides means to smaller directors and filmmakers to tell their story to the world, which in other case would not be possible due to fiancees. Some say spielberg being an orthodox cannot come to terms with it. In Speilbergs defense some say that netflix should be regulated fairly and they should be monitored on how much they spent on marketing there films
I wish sonchiriya picks up at least through the word of mouth. There are some masterpieces for which words are not enough to describe. I wish more people watch it. Apart from poor marketing another reason for it not doing well is it's downright pathetic dubbed version which I had to bear in the theatre. It just takes away the essence of the movie. Agar dubbing karni hi thi to acchi tarah se karte, but this one had cringy dialogues. Bundelkhandi with english subs would have made much more sense. I hope it releases on either of the OTT platforms so that we could watch it in it's real form.
I have been listening to sonchiriya jukebox on a loop. Vishal bharadwaj is a different flavor of music. No one can do what he does. So, please don't say that the film had no music. It got fewer number of screens and, as always, majority of the audience is always interested in escapist cinema. But I am hopeful that movie will find its audience. I am looking forward to digital release as I couldn't watch it myself.
very fair comment on having early reviews come in at least 4-5 days before the release. Consider how early movies are screened for critics in the west and Rotten Tomatoes score are updated a week before their public release. This can really help push quality cinema to a (comparatively) wider audience during this release. Also, who decides when the movie is screened for critics? Is it only the producers or can few critics push for an early preview of a movie?
i feel the same about C.I.D when he said "maybe i was dumb enough to like it because i was young".... interms of cid i can relate....haven't watched total dhamaal.
personally though sonchiriya's failure is heartbreaking..bt lets not read too much into it..the nation is in a gloomy mind..had the film released a week or two after total dhamaal maybe it might have made a difference.. also reflecting upon the promotional part..i think they did quite well but the audience, unfortunately, wasn't interested... i am hoping against hope now that the photograph also doesnt meet with the same fate as it is rather horrendosly unpromoted..bt it was always going to be tough to sell such films...even with a young superstar at the helm like an R.k or R.s it wd hv bn tough... bt 2 things are for sure ronny wd continue backing such efforts,as he should, because he has made enough from uri to atleast take 2 more mid budget disasters like these..and i think this film wd be talked more about towards the year end as i think this year would do the same for S.S.R as 2017 did for Rajkumar and 2018 did for vicky and ayushman... with 2 or 3 releases this yr and this performance to back up his credentials ..hoping that its going to be a sushant yr
@@nikitamohan3390 thanks for correcting me i meant total dhamaal..since gully boy exactly when on the verge of release was considered as box office friendly as it turned out to be
Last time we saw these three laughing because of movie not making fun of a movie was gully boy ☺love you ranveer singh, zoya, Anupama ..love you all ..
Total Dhamal is baseless comedy film... I dnt understand how people can tolerte this typ of movie... worst movie... go nd watch sonchiriya instead of it
Ohhhh come on man! Each time u can find a sensible n serious Cinema.. Sometimes u need a crazy fun too n that is total dhamaal for.. In fact the entire team claimed that plz put ur brain aside just go n enjoy ur two hours don't even dare to find out sensibility in that it is fun light hearted family entertainment. That is it.. I too watched with my mom n she also loved it.. Infact it for every one from a grand mom to a grand child.
In the theatre where I was watching Total dhamaal, kids were laughing and smiling, at the same time i was cringing every moment, was such a bad movie, made worse by Madhuri and Anil kapoor
At 4:42...rahul says that Saathiya was a film based on Live In relationship but he is incorrect...in Saathiya, vivek’s and rani’s character are already secretly married first as shown in a song and then they move out of their homes to live together. You can say Wake Up sid was kind of Live In relationship film in which Ranbir and Konkana live in a flat as friends and then fall in love.
Perhaps you guys are right that your opnions does not account to box office numbers, But what we see from past two week is that Scrap like Total Dhammal get success and sonchiriyan do not gets love it deserves is actually worrysome. You guys talked about early access to movies but I don't think that will help as total dhammal is scoring numbers in second week. The problem is that people favours light entertaining films with big stars, music and there is no craft and art that caters to this genre. Indian movies has to make more good movies in to this categary.
I was really looking forward to watching Sonchiraiya but cancelled the plan after Anupama's review and now I hear Sucharita praising it. I understand that Anupama could not connect with it. Given that, Sucharita should have reviewed the movie. Anupama's somewhat negative review hurt the movie. P.S.- Rahul Desai is such a darling.
i saw sonchiraiya i enjoyed my time its really great dialogue and the slap on face of bhumi did hit hard its not depressing its impactfull go on if planing to
Great conversation. But I cannot still wrap my head around the fact that you can’t pronounce a popular Indian/regional language like Telugu (tolluguu according to sucharita). It was tough for me to even spell the way she said it 🤦♂️😒
I agree with Rahul at 15:59 that reading reviews does lead you to going into the movie with a perspective, given that you trust the reviewers. I did not want to watch Simmba for obvious reasons and reviews from film companions helped assert that. However the crazy number the movie was making in the BO I had to watch it to know if I’m on the unknown. So now for movies with high hopes I listen to film companion, for massy movies I read one word review of Taran ardash on Twitter for that’s all I can bare of his analysis.
Could it just be because if the choice of films which we had at the theatre..a dark existential film a uplifting stupid comedy..i told my friend I watched sonchiriya over Luka chupi his response was 'why!? It's a dark film'. I think irrespective of the time we live in audience would consider watching a comedy over a drama, unless drama had some relative aspects to it like gully boy which had that underdog story which everyone dreams about.
@anupamachopra ma'am i feel the " INDIAN BOARD EXAMS" also affect in terms of watching the films like sonchiriya only if students would have been free we might have really crashed the cinemas
I can see the 3hearts aching when a film like "sonchiriya" dosnt do well. I hope still it picks up. I personally liked the film. And mam, please ab toh bata do kya fukati ho? Haha.. You should be the next Lo'real ambassador, YOU ARE WORTH IT.
Basically Rahul Desai loves. every film that has Son in it. Sonchiriya, Love Sonia, Soni Why so patriarchial Rahul ? You should also love Daughterchiriya, Love Daughteria and Daughteri :D P.S. You are reaaaallly cute though :p
Dont blame the audience....its all about filmmaker choice...our audience appreciate a certain type of films and critics and filmakers should accept it rather than being smart and saying audience are dumb... total dhamaal was genuinely enjoyable.... i am not saying sonchiriya is bad but my parents wud any day njoi watching td than sonchiriya.... lucka chuppi cant cmment as dint watch.... but grow up guys you all are much better than this... start watching movie in cinema with full house than you will understand what movies your audience like...
Thats what your problem and majority of ppl like you have that you feel what you like is gr8 and what others like is not... i am not saying gully boy is bad or sonchiriya is bad but you cant blame audience for liking total dhamaal and not liking sonchiriya... and anyways result shows who is dumb and who are not and by the way do you even have knowledge of any filmmaking to comment like ppl are dumb? First get some manners from your so called intellectual family as calling ppl dumb for liking a prticular film shows your background
@@hindustandefencenews3228 and you guys confirm why indian media and critics are not respected....not a single movie which you guys enjoy works here or abroad....and the day you guys enjoy and appreciate indian cinema india will win oscar
I didn't watch Sonchiriya because I didn't even know the movie existed or was released this past weekend! I watched an iDiva video with Bhumi - figured she had a movie coming out so I googled it (big Bhumi fan) and was SO surprised that the movie was already screening at the cinemas!
@@abhishekkumar3679 that's just my opinion buddy. Obviously people can watch whatever they want but mard ko dard nahi hota is movie which has never been made before in Bollywood and majority of the people don't even know about it.
Sonchiriya was a wonderful movie lots of hard work from the team gone waste release in ott platform felt sorry fr all who have given their blood and sweat look at the cinematography was it easy to film just sheer bad luck make it a cult atleast a tribute to the hard work fr the makers perfect fr the big screen viewing
That’s what she said, he didn’t deserve to play such an unimportant character, moreover in an interview with Anupama he said that he did that role because the producer or director was his friend and requested him to do it.
I agree to Sucharita. There is so much going on in the country right now that we are looking for some relief in comedy films. Even if it's not that good
I really love all your review..... but honestly I do decide to watch a movie in the theatre based on your review.....so you do influence my choice.. not sure about others 😉😉 .! Btw, the original movie of Badla, “invisible guest” is awesome.... and you must watch it ..before or after Badla ......😊😊
Reviews matter to some of us, but not to all of us. I always read and watch movie reviews with interest. But then I know I won't like movies that aim for cheap laughs. There are thousands out there who think double meaning dialogues, making faces, 'funny' music, is what make a "good" movie. They'd watch such movies regardless of the terrible reviews.
Rahul...I like your reviews but I would like to give you a friendly advice. I think your screen presence for these reviews can sometime be a bit dull. It would be great if you could work on it. On the contrary your peers are always super charged on the videos always. All in all, love the work that you guys put forward at flim companion.
Total Dhamaal was genuinely funny just like Dhamaal. Rahul is honest when he admits that he grew up on films like Dhamaal but has now maybe changed in terms of his taste. Glad my taste hasn't changed and I could enjoy Dhamaal (almost a decade ago) as well as Total Dhamaal and a Sonchiriya now.
The "Three Musketeers" are back! It's intriguing and educational to listen all 3 of u talking about Hindi movies with so much passion and so much knowledge of cinema. But plz make a video on Oscar movies too. It would be great to know ur opinion on this year's Oscar nominated movies or anything related to Oscars.
I am amazed at how you can praise a SonChiriya and a Made In Heaven in the same breath! One is such a raw and real portrayal, while the web series seems to be written by somebody who is completely out of touch with reality, or is high on grass!
I am watching Made in Heaven right now. It is not that unrealistic as you are saying. Did you watch Episode 3 with a 60 plus bride Gayatri who just wants her arrogant kids to attend her wedding? Her scenes are very touching and the web series clearly shows people's sick obsession with public image in society, status, sexism and how women are undermined for their achievements and many times their success is always attributed to some man whether it's their nalayaak cheating husband, father or whoever. There is another episode where the bride is a pilot and first working woman in her family and how she is treated by society, her family, etc
@@nikitamohan3390 I agree, the Dipti Naval episode has to be the only redeeming episode in the whole series, apart from that, it's mostly a whole load of virtue signaling masquerading as drama. In this specific case, I guess you failed to notice that the same "nalayaak" husband is the major investor in the protagonist's venture, and the girl cons her way into the multi-millionaire family, but nobody sees anything wrong in that. In the pilot episode, she is not treated wrongly by her family, it's she who treats the family help unfairly. The whole plot of the first woman pilot episode seems badly contrived, desperate to show somebody who is rich in a bad light. In this day and age, when camera phones are ubiquitous and social media is all powerful, one has to be a fool to indulge in something like that and put their reputation and financial future at stake. 15 years ago, yes, it would have been believable, but today, it's pure bull. The writers got so engrossed in making it woke and sending umpteen social signals, that they forgot that the main part of any series, is the story, which is something one has to fight hard to make sense of in this series.
@@swapnilghosh When I read the reviews, they called Tara's character deeply flawed and messy. None of the critics really think her character is a saint either and neither did I from what I watched. But compared to Dil Dhadakne Do, this show is far more realisitic and their focus was on different couples from Upper class South Delhi. The characters they show are very relatable even the gay guy who can't openly live his life on his terms cuz he is always 1 phone call away from being arrested and harassed and taunted.
@@swapnilghosh Also sir I saw an interview with the directors where they said that many of the love stories on this show were taken from real life experiences like that episode where some NRI sets up a beauty pageant to find a bride for himself. It might unrealistic and ridiculous as hell to you and me because of our upbringing, lifestyle, values, whatever but Reema and Zoya said that was based on an incident that happened in India recently.
Don't think anyone is going to put a film like Total Dhamaal in front of critics or film journalists that early. In today's age, critics or film journalists are just another marketing tool in the hands of producers. I am not saying that critics are bought or anything like that, just that film producers use them as such. So if a movie like Newton which does not have a big marketing budget to send leads on tour in various cities, it is quite easy for them to have a screening for critics early so the word of mouth marketing could start before the film even releases. But films like Total Dhamaal does not have this budget problem, so they are not going to make an extra effort to release it a week earlier for critics.
I feel the movies which are more indie type and dies not gave that much of marketing budget and they are absolutely fav... critics make the difference...Soni I watched because of Anupama spoke about it...came to know about Gupi Gawaiya And Bagha bajawiya only because of the film companion article and watched it yesterday..they do make a diff to smaller gem of a movie
So first things first, I NEED to see reviews before going to theatre, but I'm sure that is not the case for many. More than reviews, it is the trailer that should excite me. I'm sure most people these days go by trailers, that is something you guys should discuss next time (in context to what decides the fate of movies). Tumbadd had a second inning on Amazon Prime and only because anybody who saw gave rave reviews. I hope same happens with Sonichiraiya (fewer people watch Netflix).
