I loved this movie so much, the CGI didn't bother me in the slightest. The whole vibe, the lack of dialog, the costume and set design, everything, I'm obsessed. I think she's anxiety ridden based on the way she behaves before the aliens show up, like just going in to town is a chore, she's scared of anyone seeing her, etc. It's a lot easier to be brave with aliens attacking you than it is with humans judging you.

"No one will save you" is akin to no one in the town will save you because you are isolated by hate, so instead "aliens" will save you instead. The other view is what you expressed here, which is more internal to her emotional wellbeing and subsequent happiness in the new world. Multifaceted. The ending and the background story really made this movie shine. I can't say this is the best horror movie i've seen, but it is certainly very memorable and definitely recommended.

This and Talk To Me are by far my favorite horror movies of the year so far. I'm usually good with ambiguous storytelling and leaving things open to interpretation, but honestly I love how this film didn't leave us wondering. We learned why she was living in guilt. We learned how sorry she was by literally making her apology the ONLY spoken words in the film. It adds so much weight to them. So much in fact, the aliens even felt it and decided to give her this idyllic and happy lifestyle to make up for her 10 years of guilt and solitude while they went on to feed on the rest of the world. This was absolutely brilliant.

@@rosswatson3993 Talk to me is like every other horror movie on this planet. Ouija-style game, possession, a chair moves, the possessed is in hell... these concepts are great. Nothing wrong with them unless you do them as plainly as possible, which is exactly what this movie does while wrapping it up in some kind of neat (I'll admit it) tricks. The possessed kid does nothing but hurt himself when he's awake and stays in bed when he's not. Everyone experiences boring hallucinations instead of anything in the physical world. So you didn't like No One Will Save you. That's fine because it is pretty weird towards the end. But at least it tried to be unique.

"No one will save you...but yourself". The title hints on the "therapy session" that the protagonist has to goes through to deal with her trauma and forgive herself. The aliens, on their side, embrace her in their new society, in which the humanity is long gone (except for her, as far as we can see). It's a surprising happy ending and I loved it.

I absolutely loved this movie, it is in my top horror films of the year. I honestly didn’t even register the CGI being bad or not because I was so enthralled with what was going on. As for the ending, I suspect the aliens spared her because she was the only one able to continuously fight back and she was just as much an alien as they were to her town, and the dancing scene at the end was her finally living a happy life in a perfect town like the one she dreamed of while building the model village in her house.

I love this film! Loved the fact that the ONLY one line of dialogue is an apology and the ending where it seems that the aliens are willing to humor Brynn showing her more empathy than humankind (which is kinda depressing)... They are especially kind to her given that she killed 3 of them... 😁

I just finished watching this movie (and then of course watched your video), and I'm still mopping up the tears. What I got from this movie is that the concept is working backwards from "what if an alien invasion causing hive-type minds could bring closure and community to a pained and isolated person?" The last act really dragged me through it. Who doesn't feel the regret of something they've done, and wishing with all one's heart that it hadn't happened. We are...human, after all.

Posting this before I watch this video. This is my #1 horror film of the year (so far, but it will be hard to beat)! Kaitlyn Dever’s performance in this film is Oscar worthy! Even with any flaws this movie may have the pros far outweigh them and I had a blast watching this movie. 5/5, 10/10, 100%.
@sador42

When it comes to CGI, for me, it’s about the story selling the effects. If I am onboard for the ride and the effects don’t quite live up to high standards (or if practical would have been better), I am able to suspend my disbelief and really ignore the CGI and just accept that this is what they look like. My imagination will also help fill in what might be lacking on the screen. But what sells the CGI 100% for me in this movie is Kaitlyn reacting to it. SHE made me believe that this is just what these things look like and she was scared to shit by them. That is what made it more effective for me over all. Saying that though, I completely understand how it could “pull you out” at certain points. One other thing I wanted to say was I think the choice to make the aliens “tradition grey” type aliens was mostly because they knew they were not going to have any exposition dialog in the film to explain that these were aliens so the best way to do that would be to just make them look like traditional grey aliens from the rip so there would not be any questions from the audience from the beginning if this was supernatural or something else. I thought it was a brilliant choice. I went into this movie entirely blind, I had no idea it was aliens honestly, I only glanced at the cover and did not really pick up that she was being pulled up by alien light. I think it helped me A LOT to not know ANYTHING at all about the story, not even the blurb. I knew I was watching this no matter what because Kaitlyn Deaver was in it so i wanted to go in with as little knowledge as possible.
@sador42
@sador42 Год назад
I think the “metaphor” is simpler than we may think. I think it’s about “guilt” and “forgiveness”. And I think the aliens felt sorry for her once they saw her story and “they” forgave her and allowed her to forgive herself which the town would have never done. I may be wrong and the writer may have had a different metaphor but that is what I got out of it.

@@sador42 I think you just sealed my interpretation of this film. The ending had me puzzled as to what the hell her character arc actually was. But after a some consideration I think the movie might be an allegory to Catholicism. The rock killing is very Cain and Abel. The wound to her side like God arranged for Jesus (allegedly the same person). The squiggly alien thing as eucharist. Letters as prayers, and forgiveness provided by a third party (god/alien) instead of making amends to the victims. Personally I find Catholicism ethically bizzare, hence my confusion at the ending. Whitley Strieber's Communion (LOL at the context) meets Killing Of A Sacred Deer/Mother! is actually brilliant if this is anywhere near the ballpark of the screenwriters intentions.

ET phoned my ass home. That scene, I must have jumped 2 feet out of my chair. Because of the cinematography used, I felt part of the environment, which had me intensely involved in what was happening to her. With the rock scene, it felt like a Caine and Abel moment. I understand that she had to accept what had happened, but it had to be induced from another plane so to speak. That's why the title confused me for a bit, for it seemed like we had to be saved from ourselves. I Enjoyed No One Will Save You.

I really enjoyed this movie. The whole set-up was so surprising and the mix of aesthetics between her 50´s house and style, and the dark, ominous aliens. I also liked that she seamed to have a really nice life: the beautiful house, her work, the nice dinner she makes for herself - but her loneliness lies in the background as a reminder of her guilt. It was more scary than I anticipated. One of the most scary moments for me was on the bus when she thought she was safe, but then … There’s no escaping your past, sort of. The fact that there was no dialog was one of my favorite aspects of this film. The storytelling was so well done that I actually didn’t notice for almost half the movie. I also wished the aliens (at least the closer looks of the aliens) was more practical than CGI. But I enjoyed the classic alien design.

I loved this movie, I can't get it out of my head. I don't know if there is a clear metaphor, but I do think that the title refers to everyone around her in the small city where she lives and the aliens that invade her house. But it also refers to herself; she will not save herself. She still lives in the city where everyone knows what she did and hate her for it. And when the aliens come, at no point does she try to escape the city. She comes back again and again to the house where she grew up and lived with her now deceased mum.Yes she does fight the aliens and seems to defend herself, but I think she defends the house mostly and all the good memories it contains. Every happiness of her life is in the past and she knows, believes she will never be happy again. So she tries to save her house and the model of the perfect city she loves so much. And as long as she can play make believe, through her model or the alternate reality the aliens put her in, she can go on living. But she needs to remember what she did and hate herself for it. Because she refuses to save herself from her trauma and guilt. And yes no one will save her. But she won't save anyone either, just the memories she has of Maude and of a happier life.

my interpretation of the ending is that this alien race has a different sense of morality and feel that she has this in common with them because she kills her friend. i would even go as far to say that she has no real remorse and has been putting on an act with all the notes, maybe even trying to convince herself that she feels sorry, but the aliens see through this. Maybe the aliens have a similar lack of empathy or morality and believe she is one of them, therefore letting her keep her mind and live in the reality they create at the end. Meanwhile she comes to terms with her “sociopathy” and is okay with living in this facade as long as things are how she wants them to be

15:10 Spooky concerning the red head girl on the wall it's main meaning reinforces subliminally that Brynn is a shunned and loathed individual for what she did, Brynn is considered evil by the people of the town (this also ties to her actions at the end of the movie). A women from medieval times who had red hair was considered a witch and would be persecuted! Secondly the painting of the girl has a another meaning or meanings which appears in other places in the movie and it has more sinister implications, so if you focus your eyes and mind on the bottom part of the painting, starting exactly where Brynn is sitting then move across until you are just about to reach the face, from where Brynn is and before the face is 666, now this is being used to tell you to focus on the hidden meaning of Brynn coming state which is done by a evil force, if you know about the history of rituals by way of 666, it's not just a Biblical meaning. I really dislike this film based on the meaning, the meaning of the movie is about trauma based mind control which Brynn tries to break, unfortunately for me I've studied the dark side of movies and it can have an effect on my enjoyment of movies. Anyway so how do I know this well the scene when she tries to go behind one of the Aliens to hit it the Alien uses it's kinetic powers and flings her out the room where she hits the wall, when the shot turns to her and she starts to move you see a Monarch Butterfly on her back, Monarch Butterfly signifies mind control due to it's abilities to pass on it's genetics to its offspring, from a baby to adult it is programmed to know where it was born so it automatically knows where to migrate to. When Brynn is chased by the tractor beam she is frozen in the position of "As Above, So Below" which references the people who are controlling her. The part when Brynn is frozen on the celling and the Alien is under her then that's the ritual abuse being performed on her to try and control her, which is very disturbing if you know the accounts of victims of trauma base mind control. There's much more in this movie but what made me really dislike this movie was the ending, she had a chance to get away from the control but her decision to stay in the reality rather than save herself or others was in my opinion a terrible message, The movie title falls on everyone not just her in the end. So even if you take it on face value that she would rather put the trauma behind her and accept the people who use to shun her as more important then the whole world being invaded (finally she gets the acceptance she always wanted but there's no real forgiveness or redemption), which is so selfish beyond belief and this action is no different than what Cypher tried to do in the Matrix.

I absolutely loved this movie! Didn’t really have time to focus on the CGI with all the action going on. The no dialogue aspect was frickin’ brilliant. The thought crossed my mind: was that small alien a baby alien? And I thought that “no one will save you” because they were all taken over by aliens already 🤷🏼‍♀️ I felt for sure that the aliens felt empathy for her because of her past. And if you notice the ending has alien ships hovering all over the place, and I thought that was because the aliens had taken all the humans and they were all living their heart’s desire in stasis. I’ll watch this again to pick up on things that I surely missed. And is it just me or did anyone else think of Wes Anderson while watching this?

I was so excited for this movie because I love a good alien movie and rarely do any good ones come out anymore... I was very uninterested for most of the movie but I REALLY enjoyed the Alien's invading her mind and thought that concept alone was incredible. The aliens had already won, the movie was not about the invasion, the real horror was the exploration and almost torture of her that was a great thought experiment in itself. I have plans to rewatch with purpose since I felt like I didn't give it any credit until the scene I mentioned before. I still do wish someone would take this premise of the home invasion aspect and explore that further. Edit: Also, I'm pretty sure the tiny alien is in the credits or was given the title (via interview) "little fucker"

I'm curious about what non-horror sci-fi you're personally into. We both have a love of alien related media, so I always enjoy when you get to talk about it! Hardcore Whovians will tell you that Doctor Who has a bit of a horror edge to it at times and the number of parents groups and politicians who tried to censor it back in the day should tell you how frightening some of it was to audiences at the time. I'm also a massive Trekkie and would like to share a snippet from a blogpost I found online: Star Trek is the Beatles of science fiction. It’s certainly the most famous (probably due to the movies more than anything else.) Even people who have never seen any version of Star Trek still know its catchphrases and icons, such as “Beam me up Scotty”, “KHAAAAAAAAAANNNNNNN”, “He’ dead Jim”, “It’s life but not as we know it”, “phasers on stun”, etc. Also, like the Beatles the original Star Trek series was very upbeat and optimistic and preached love and acceptance. Doctor Who, meanwhile, was The Rolling Stones of science fiction. It was the second most mainstream certainly, but it was always a bit edgier than Trek. Trek pushed the boundaries in positive ways too, like having the first interracial kiss, but Who was like the Rolling Stones in that it enjoyed just provoking controversy. Doctor Who had horrifying monsters that terrified generations of children, scenes of graphic violence like dolls strangling people, the Doctor being drowned etc, that traumatized younger viewers. Who not only provoked controversy, but absolutely thrived on it at times. Finally, the Doctor is like Keith Richards in that he is someone who can never die either. Always remember that Star Trek is the Beatles and Doctor Who is the Rolling Stones.

Ok, this movie made perfect sense to me, the main character never felt "at home" after the incident with her friend, she felt like an alien, then this alien invasion happens and maybe they're not hostile, just curious about human emotions and interactions, so when they "see" what happened to Maude and why the main character (gosh i don't know her name!) feels so alone in the world, they accept her and she gets the fairytale life she's always wanted. Super happy ending.

To me, this was all about living life after experiencing trauma. That time of life consumes a person and it feels as if they are stuck in it for years. This can make you seem alien to others and vice versa. And one day, some of the pain starts to peel away. She planned to teach herself to dance, and in the end she did.

She just got home because I think some time has passed so I think she's around 22-24. The town hates her because of her friend. She writes the friend letters but they never said what happened to the parents. I was thinking they abandoned her too. I rather see f'ed up CGI than a custom. And I hate to say it but I didn't realize no one was talking till the end I had questions about the woman who spit it her face....if I had spit I would've had some choice words too. But I liked the movie it was different and I would tell people to see it.....BUT LET THE LACK OF DIALOGUE BE A SURPRISE

One of my favorite call-backs in this movie is the eerie similarity in the ways she accidentally killed the alien/Maude. That reveal in the flashback was so good. I actually really enjoyed this one. The CGI didnt bother me at all.

i think it’s a precaution tale with the ending...that we must learn to forgive more because we are alienating so many people today...the ending is like “this is what she would rather choose over the town, this is what the town did to one person”

What a fun, tense at moments, alien flick. I really enjoyed it. And I was blown away after the fact that there was no dialog. I never clocked it while watching the movie and didn't realize it until it was mentioned in a review I watched after.

You're the best, Emma! Even if I don't agree with all your takeaways, I appreciate how wide & deep your exploration into horror has been thus far . . . I loved this movie & saw it the day it dropped. Kaitlyn Dever has been underrated for over a decade . . . I just don't understand the dance scene at the end, especially her nod to the camera, & why the aliens stuck around or were ever there in the first place. I was really hoping you'd touch on that 🤔

Most people doesn't realize that this movie isn't about aliens. It is about her being alienated and struggling to forgive herself. The ending symbolizes that she has forgiven herself and can live with other people, even if she is still alienated.

I totally agree with you on the CGI... It really pulled me out of the film on multiple ocasions, wich is a shame, because it's a very original movie with a great concept. Maybe if they had shown less of the aliens, or perhaps from a larger distance, the CGI wouldn't be so distracting.

I was also a bit confused at first - in which decade this may take place, but after a while I thought more of it like nod towards the UFO-panic in the 50ies and 60ies, aswell as an ironic touch regarding that era "where everything was perfect on the surface", while also adressing that our main hero might be a bit "out of touch", quirky, perhaps even a bit weird. I hardly ever watch big Hollywood productions so I can't tell how good CGI can look these days, I myself was perfectly fine with how it turned out in this flick. But that of course that is just my opinion. For me, she found peace and relief in her final breath, she died at the end. The overall lighting of the final scenes, the saturation of colours - everything seems to be perfect, too perfect - is often a used as a stylistic device in cinema - that one is near to it's own demise, that one is in some sort of delirium.

Lots of little things that bugged me (agreed on the CG and WHAT HAPPENED TO MAUDE) but some surprisingly tense scenes and really got my social anxiety going. I also did not understand that red hair wall mural shot... until we talked it out together hahah.

I loved the movie. I have generalized anxiety, so it was easy to relate to Brynn. The actress is fantastic. The lack of dialogue is refreshing. It’s truly a movie about alienation. The end is ambiguous, open to many interpretations. Excellent film, that some people will hate and many will love. Have you seen the old Star Trek episode The Menagerie? I think the end leans that way. The Trek aliens take pity on the human survivor of a horrible accident and create a safe, fantasy world for her to live in. Brynn seems to have withdrawn into a happy, "alienated" world of compassion, joy, community and acceptance that the aliens have created for her, because she cannot find it among her fellow humans. I'm on the fence as to whether it's a happy end or a tragic one. A metaphor for self-acceptance or complete mental collapse? She can never return to an ordinary human community, that's for sure.

If you replace save with forgive the metaphor makes sense. Nobody in the town where she lives will forgive her or save her from her past. Only after she forgives herself and finds a measure of closure can she move on and find the life she wants. No One Will Save You = No One Will Forgive You

Bummer for me. I give a lot of grace to new horror because so much has been replicated, ripped off ect but at the same time, it would be untrue to say there aren't unique films still being made - ie appendage. My mother loved this film, as for me, it took 2 sittings to get through it. Unlike yourself, I'm not into alien movies. I find it interesting to see how divided the audience is! I personally would not watch it again. As for the actress, yes, phenomenal job! Props to her!

Great spoiler discussion Spooky! OK I felt the silent approach to the movie was very hit and miss, reason being as you pointed out the "exaggeration expressions" which made Brynn and others behavior unrealistic to a fault in my opinion, the town was silent for the sake of being silent not just for their shunning of Brynn. Going for a classic silent movie approach did not translate well for me. The early Alien reveal was a horrible decision, not keeping the Aliens hidden for a longer period of time was a bad decision in my view, the opportunity to make them scary a nd menacing on screen was lots'd. The tension when the spider toed Alien first came on screen was amazing, then the reveal happened and it took me out the movie whenever they were on screen. It wasn't because of the classic Alien design for the most part but it was the VRFX, rendering was terrible. The Aliens in 1996 Arrival was practical and more scary then this modern take on the Greys, I would even give 2013 Dark Skies a shout for it's FX. The choice to hold off on her past caused me issues in the end, when her past starts being revealed I found it hard to get behind her, I worked out that she must of done something bad which made me not get behind her fully like in the beginning, her choice at the end of film compounded that for me.

She is not dead at the end, she is back on Earth, and herself. Everybody else is taken over however, look at the squiggly movements on some people's necks. Great film, odd ending.. many hated the ending, but I think it's one of the things that makes this film truly original, and we need more originality. Love this film. Looking forward to whatever this director has planned next. Kaitlyn will be in season 2 of The Last of Us, that I do know. Brian Duffield is working on something called Vivien Hasn't Been Herself Lately (now there is a understated title, if I ever saw one), the synopsis of which says, "A young married couple struggles to survive against a supernatural entity."

The film has a lot going for it; the performance, set designs, atmosphere, what's up with the hostile townspeople, guilt syndrome. The threat / antagonist however wasn't interesting; it had all the tired tropes of grey aliens we've seen in 30 other films.
