Hi, Tim: Thank you for your thoughtful, thorough review. I am new to your reviews and they are helping me "get ready" for my Spring plan of starting my adventure. Thank you also for all the effort in editing and filming your videos. I just retired and you motivate me to "get out there" and make my own adventures. I admire your honesty and your desire to show the travails of travel as much as the joy. Best to you.

Have been running the Michelin Anakee Adventure for several thousand miles and to me, it is the best tire I’ve ever run on my 2012 GS.... Great wear on the street, great on fire road, gravel and a little mud (key word “little “). Hands down my go to tire.

Great info, glad you are safe and sound! It’s such a trick to find the “do-all” tire. I have extremely limited off tarmac experience & know I won’t do a lot of serious trail riding but I want to be confident & comfortable in logging roads & deep gravel. I have future dreams of BDR’s & will absolutely get a more aggressive tire for that! Thanks again, via con Dios y paz mi hermano.

Good to hear from you. Good topic. Too many riders ignore the fact that tires can make a huge difference in keeping upright and safe. Being able to keep your chin up and wheels down is doing it right with tires and brakes, and maintaining them both. Never sacrifice safety, otherwise you might get an adventure you don’t want. Chin up Tim.

Thanks Tim. I appreciate your answering my question on tires. I have used the Heidenau K60S on my 1190 KTM adventure. I thought they worked well on the highway and ok on the dirt. I use the Continental attack trail II for my standard commute tire. Will have to try out a set of Anakee wilds.

I've plugged at least a dozen tires over the last 20 years and never had a problem. I've even wore them down to the cords and they still held air. Don't be afraid to use car tire plugs

I 2nd the tire plug success. Have done it half dozen times, all on rear tires on heavy cruiser bikes and even once on my Yamaha FJR 1300 with lots of power. Ran that plug for over 5k miles until tire wore out. If you do it correctly, it will work safely in my experience.
@JBMotorrad

I agree. I just got back from 8,500 miles across the US (and Back!), I plugged a tire (rear) and finished out its lifespan with 1,900 miles on the plug - 125 miles of which was off-pavement/gravel, packed sand/gravel roads. This was my first ever plugged tire experience, and I am a believer. I've been told to mind your speed on a plugged tire (after I got back...), i did not mind my speed and did just fine. Not advocating this, just sayin'.

In my experience across 40 years and half a million miles, wearing out two rear for every one front tire is more the norm than the exception. On the other hand, when I started doing track days, my aggressive use of the front brake caused me to wear out front tires as fast as I wore out the rear tires. This was true on both my 633 pound sport touring K1300GT and my 459 pound S1000RR.

I like the Shinko 805.I get 17000 km on them if I do mostly tarmac easy on the compression breaking. Deflated it has incredible traction off road.i have traction all the way till the knob is gone.its also quiet enough in the highway. Only thing is on side ways on the gravel it slides more then most I think but it’s very controllable. The price is also right. All that on a DR. Thanks for the video.good work

Thanks for your tire advice. I am going to go with Anakee Adventure tires front and rear on my 2015 R1200GS. It came with Anakee IIIs which I liked but I had some reservations on those in the rain since Michelin did not brag about their wet performance. I went with street tires but now I want to go back to Anakees for the increased longevity and better suitability to forest and campground roads.

Thanks for this video. I am always interested to see what tires people are running and how they perform. The Shinko 705 I ran delaminated at 5k miles. It scared the heck out of me. Will never run those again. You got me interested in the Ankee Wilds once my current Dunlop Trailmax Missions wear out.

We tried Continental Trail Attack 3s on my 2014 V Strom 1000 and my wife's CTX700. It's been a great 90/10 tire on both bikes. Stable on road and fine in gravel. Last May we rode to Medora ND from Michigan and came the back way into Medora in deep gravel and my Strom was very stable. It was a beautiful way to get into Medora right to the Elkhorn Quarters where we stayed. It's a nice tire that seems to be wearing well and well suited for mostly pavement. I have to say the stock Bridgestone Battle Wings 501/502 that came on my VStrom were a great tire. I had zero issues. I changed them out for the Trail Attack 3 at 8600 miles and I had at least another 1000 miles in them. I plan on trying the Anakee Adventure next and it's probably a good comparison to the BW 501/502. I have the Motoz GPS rear and Pirelli Scorpion STR front on my DR650 and that is a good combo for 50/50 adv riding. I've never tried either as a complete set but I would recommend both 👍

Hi Tim, I put a set Anake Adventure on my 2008 BMW GSA with 22000 miles, initially they were great but after 100 miles riding alone and not loaded the noise started when you leaned the bike over. Months later, it got so bad driving down the highway that I thought my front wheel bearing was going to fall apart at any moment. Took it in to have them replaced and was told the bearings were fine, it's just a road noise. I unfortunately don't like or wear ear plugs so had to suffer the noise. Strangely I also fitted a set on my older XRV 750 Honda Africa twin and it never made a sound. Thanks for the videos, really enjoy them.

Awesome, Tim! I know you do most/all of your own maintenance. Maybe I missed it, but do you have shops do all your tire install and balance every time? Ever mount one yourself while on a trip? I’m also impressed so far with the Anakee Adventure tires on my R1200GSA. Great compromise tires!

Been using Shinko tires on my cruisers and touring bikes for years. Love the grip and for the cost always under $200/set, it is just a smart thing to do to replace both at the same time. I have found that using a balancing filler such as Dyno Beads or Ride-On Balancer/Sealant helps with the life of these tires.

Hi Tim ... I went from the stock Michelin Anakee 3, to the Metzeler Tourance NEXT and then to the Michelin Anakee Adventure on my GS, and I found that the Anakee Adventures are the noisiest tyre to date, especially at a slight lean angle there is a 'howling whining' sound - hard to describe. The Metzelers possibly slightly less on the durability that the Michelins. I still do pretty much all of my riding on pavement - not much off road or dirt roads here in the UK. Might try the Metzeler Karoo Street next. Great videos - very informative. Ride safe.

Have used TKC70 for my 1190Adv for three seasons. Great in rain and on gravel. Not so with high speed on fully laden bike. And the front wear as fast as the rear. Riding on a pair of Anakee Adventure now. Works great in rain and shine in the Alps and in highspeed on autobanhs. On gravel and fire roads ok but the rear tends to kick sideways a bit on loose surface. And that is til the antispin kicks in. Not much wear on them though after 5000km with 80/20 on/off road. Will try Mitas E07, or Dunlops new Trailmax Mission Adventure (if the size fits) next time as I am looking for more dirt worthy tire.

2018 suzuki v-strom 650 Long distance camping, about 600 lbs GVW all geared up. 80% paved, 20% easy off road. Running Shinko 705's Very happy with performance on road at moderately anti-social speeds, and on easy dirt trails, no flats. I wore out the rear at 4600 km, running it 2 psi over with the weight, but I did do six days and 2900 km two up with gear... Replaced with the same. The front is still well in business with 6000 km on it so far. I suspect that your front Shinko came apart because you ride more aggressively off road than I do. My conclusion is that the Shinko 705's are the way to go in lightly loaded, high percentage pavement, low percentage easy off-road. The price helps, if you're going through a lot of tires.... Before my next tour, I'll do the same as you did and go with a Shinko front and an Anakee wild rear. If I do Labrador, I'll go Shinko 803 front, or Anakee both.

After reading comments about pluging tires. I've been riding for 50 years and done a lot of replacing my own tires and plugging a few. I've used rope plugs and taking a few to a tire shop that put the boot in that pulled the stem through the hole. On a recent issue on my 2018 vstrom 1000 xt with a 705 I plugged it on the road. When I got home I put a new 705 on . The 1 I removed had a 1/3 of the tread left so I thought I would keep it for a emergency spare when wintering in the Texas hill country. I had some boot patches with a sleeve on them that pushes through the hole. The only problem when i pushed the sleeve in the hole inside the tire it did not come the hole on the outside. It came out in a groove away from the hole. So I would say the cords were separating. So really how good is plugging tires on the road. Yes i would do it to get me home or if a long distance to go I would get a new tire. And in the past I was one of those cheap people that has plugged a tire and wore it out. It's about knowing how much risk are you willing to take. As a MSF instructor I told students to get a new tire ASAP. I think all new motorcycle should come with tire pressure sensor's. I run Pressure pro's on all my tires. Truck,5th wheel. And trailer I pull behind. My FJR and Vstrom. Ride safe and know your limits.

Ron H. Hard compound motorcycle tires will always be a greater risk of your life than soft sticky motorcycle tires that quickly wear out on any motorcycle doing any type of riding on any type of surface under any type of weather ..that being said the limiting facter that is hardly ever mention is size availability. Adventure class motorcycles do not all have the same wheel diameters front or back. Neither does Adventure class motorcycle tire manufacturers offer the various sizes tire brands of tires. Example my Africa twin as a 21in front wheel an 18 inch rear wheel that drastically changed my scope of brand and style of Tire ..the largest choice of Adventure tires are of rims sizes 19 inch for the front and 17-inch for the rear this will be the range of Rim sizes Adventure motorcycles 800cc up to the largest. Adventure bikes of this class are trade-offs and handling and geometry of every type of motorcycle there is in an attempt to have a motorcycle that will do what each motorcycle is purpose-built to be a master in performance and handling...so as you will become aware adventure bikes around a liter of displacement you have a jack of all trades and a master at none and then you are supposed to choose a tire best fitted to accomplish the same. so what you will find you will end up with is a tire that works beautifully up until one day for no apparent reason in the instant of a heartbeat you will notice you have no traction at all. .add the factors of having traction control plus ABS brakes on your adventure dirt bike asphalt do all bike can be very challenging on all types of Road surface and in all types of weather conditions and to make things even more complicated depending on the brand name of your motorcycle switching off and on and adding combinations to controlling your abs and your traction control can be very difficult example turning off ABS and traction control on Triumph Tiger required education of microprocessors and the programming of as I understand todays models take less steps a operation to do. As I have a earlier model of the Africa twin has two buttons one for abs one for traction control so if I'm on it like wet pavement in the rain I leave them both on I and if I'm riding for adventure and excitement I leave traction control turned completely off and I leave on abs as I completely avoid trail riding that would require a GNCC prepared motorcycle with this all being said there is only one brand of tire 1 Style that you can completely trust with a 19 in front rims 17 inch rear rim Metzeler tourance no matter what anyone's opinion will tell you no matter what any manufactured motorcycle will tell you and no matter what metzeler will tell you your chances of fewer broken bones less damage to your motorcycle a longer lifespan Metzeler tourance is your only choice....six years ago i had used a set on a dyna street bob /tracker mod with amazing results with a 120x19 front and a 170x17 rear as they were Metzeler's largest of the Tourance series adventure bike tires....as for all practical purposes if you have not purchased an adventure bike yet take a test ride on a triumph tiger 800 xc that is capable of extreme off road and ride the triumph tiger 800 that has a much lower seat hight much more oriented over all for street useage but still well capable as a BMW adventure and or my africa twin...as we get older muscling bikes well over 400 pounds in the woods can become very intimidating and very quickly become an exhausting Adventure of no joy at all that will make a 500+ pounds 0f africa twin feel as if it is ark welded to the forst floor as you attempt to stand it back up on two wheels again from only misjudging a stop and go ...high sitting seats with high mounted 5 to six gallon fuel tanks topped off full of fuel will feel like trying to motocross a harley in the woods and at age 70 i am quickly finding out off road adventure cruising is no where as easy as it was winning GNCC events on motocross bikes at age 30

A word from experience the Michelin Anakee 3 will not allow you to "ride safe my friend" as you remarked .. As an extreme example metzeler karoo 3 will do every thing better than any Anakee braged except for tread life as Karoo's will be bald on a dyna street bob faster than moto tires ridden "on any sunday"...as i next after melting off the Karoo's i chose to mount the Anakee 3 on said Dyna that did everything exactly opposite as they are advertized making each ride an adverture into the unknown of holly terror of what were you thinking ...so if you ever wish to open a used motorcycle tire shop i can well stock your adventure bike tire inventory from my existing pile of trial and error that is still growing

Hey Tim great content, I’ve been catching up in all your vids when I can, thank you. I haven’t gone threw all the comments on this vid but didn’t see any mention of Mitas. They need a plug they are incredible tires for big heavy ADV bikes - I went through (3) E07 Dakar on the back of my old 1190R and saw 17k km min for each, I also did an E09 Dakar and for a knobby it got great mileage... I recommend the Dakar version of their tires as they are a much tougher carcass as they add more plys to take all the abuse. I’m on a Tiger 1200 now and coming to my first set of tires required - I’m debating on the Michelin ADV versus the E07... I’m also a big Michelin fan for street tires but not sure they hold up like the E07 Dakar... thanks again !!! Keep them coming...

Very Timely for me I am in the market for new tires for my V-Strom DL1000 I had TKC70s that cupped bad on the front mostly highway miles. I am planning on more dirt and gravel this next season so I am leaning towards the Anakee Wilds.

Yep, they do wear as fast as the rear, and unevenly so causing vibrations, Same on my 1190.

Hey there Tim, this is a really great video. You videos are great. Re tires. Right now I have Dunlop Trailmax Mission tires but I am looking at different tires and may end up with two sets of wheels. One set for regular riding with Anakee Adventures or Shinko 705's and a second set of wheels for serious off road, with a Shinko 804 front and Anakee Wild rear. I have a few quick questions: 1) How do you feel about the performance and handling you experience when mixing different brand and model front and rear tires? 2) Did you find the Shinko 804 (I think you called it an 805 but I think the front is an 804) front was a good match for the Anakee Wild rear? 3) How did the Michelin Anakee Adventure performance compare to the Shinko 705? thanks in advance for any feedback Chris

My shinko 705, granted they were 3/4 th worn but noticed the air pressure was low so I aired them up to spec and the outside rubber seemed to de laminate from the inner part creating like air pocket bulges. But I will probably get my third set soon anyway.

That’s super cool on the review of the Shinko 705s. I just put a set on my Africa Twin and was wondering what to expect on mileage. I’m not pushing it nearly as hard as you so I’m hopeful to get even more miles but if I see 7K on the back tire I will consider it a good purchase. Thanks so much for the review and I still hope to buy you a coffee if you make it through Austin, TX

I'm a huge fan of a Darkside rear tire. (Other than if you race MotoGP) On my Suzuki Maxi scooter - the Burgman 400, I blew thru the rear Shinko tire in 3,600 miles. WHAAAT ?!? Found the right car tire size & swapped over to a Michelin Compact Radial and had 10,000 trouble free & confident miles. The car tires carcass is MUCH higher capacity & load range and won't break you $$$ from frequent, needless rear tire changes. The huge advantage is you get full tread traction all the way down, whereas with an MC tire they wear flat in the center & there's little / no tread to let water escape. My new ride is an 2008 V-Strom 650, and I'm counting the days until the otherwise nice rear M/C tire is toast, then I'm going to install a 205/45R17 Mud & Snow ❄️ car tire: $65 from Amazon & it'll last about 16-24,000 miles on my Vstrom, which sees 80 / 20 pavement / dirt. I will never use another short lived M/C tire on my bike again.

I run the Bridgestone Battle Wings on my Super Tenere. Find them to be a great 80/20 on/off tire and generally get around 12K miles out of them. Around $25O for both. One puncture in the last 10 years.

I had a flat front tire on my Shinko 704 or 5 I forget how it’s designated. I don’t see a puncture, but, there is a delaminating on one of the stamped information points near the bead/rim which I suspect may be the problem and I don’t recall having hit anything. The 2017 Africa Twin uses tubes so plugging is not possible, I have to remove one bead of the tire, patch the tube and wrestle the tire back on the rim then pump it up. I got towed!

Note re 60/40, 70/30 ratios mentioned at 2:37 and below: These ratios do NOT mean the tires are for %road/%dirt, the numbers actually relate to the amount of tread versus no tread, i.e., %tread-rubber/%open-space-between-tread-rubber. The numbers you use should reflect the worst type of road you expect to need traction for, not the percent of time you expect to be off-road.

Thank for the Vid. I know this is old but I'm about to replace my (80/20) Dunlop TrailMax tires on my CB500X with something more closer to a 70/30 or a 60/40 set. 70% of my riding is on the pavement, 20% on gravel roads and 10% slow single track riding (I avoid mud and sand and never snow). You just so happened to review the exact 4 tires on my very short list. Based on your comments I'm thinking my best option might be the Anakee Adventure on the rear (for the longevity) and the 805 the Wild on the front (for the off-road traction and stability). Seems like you might of had a similar set up at some point, did you have any issue? I'm an older rider with not a lot of off-road experience. I would appreciate your insight. Thanks

Hi Tim, as always, an interesting video. The problem in most Central European countries is that off-road driving is prohibited. That's why I drive 99 percent on paved roads. I have had the Michelin Pilot Road here for years. Super grip even in the rain and enormous durability. Greetings from Germany from Michael!

I think maybe you should try a set of Dunlop Trailmax Mission tires. I haven't tried them yet, but I think they'll be my next 50/50 tire. According to a 2020 ADV tire shootout here on YT, they were the best 50/50 ADV tire. I currently have the Shinko 804/805. I like them, but they are better offroad than on.

Trailmax mission rear is great on everything... until it rains. It sucks on cold wet pavement, more predictable on wet gravel. Breaking loose unexpectedly in 1st and 2nd on a V-strom650.

Walter nice to hear you are still alive after your 8 bouts of the unpredictable surprises i disvovered with my first set and last ever again with anakee as the last surprise fight to the finish was trying to pry them off my very expensive laced seamless alloy Apollo 40 spoke anodized rims as a finial struggle with a professional motorcycle tire machine failed to remove the anakees we were force to use a skill sawsall with a steel cutting chopsall blade to cut through the anakee steel cable inside the rubber bead of tire to allow extra give to save further damage of said Apollo $1200 buck rim as any and all tire removal tools became futile trying to dismount the Anakee for the first time not more than six months old with less than 3000 mile still showing no wear ..that i was lucky i was not on an adventure ride at that moment that would have been a much worse struggle if there had been a puncher with no choice but replacement ...as i have never had a problem breaking loose the tire bead of a Shinko , Chin Sing , or a Kenda who are all in price wars within their cheapo prices asian rubber trees offer.. And if you can spoon a bike tire from flat to a new tube mounted roosting the rear tire back on the trail in 5 minutes as was demonstrated by world championship winner 6 day trials Rider by the name of Malcolm Smith owning any of the three cheapo Taiwan tires performance record is priceless , able to jump tall sky scrapers in a single bounce , more powerfull than a super tenere and faster than a speeding ooops there goes another rubber tree plant.... oh and by the way of the evolution of Technology concerning motorcycle tubes they can be bought cut in half with the two ends sealed airtight so wheel and tire removal will no longer be need to change out the tube by merely spooning off one side of the tire bead as the slit tube allows you passage of the axle then simply spoon on the one tire bead and pump air into the open circle sealed on both ends trick tire tube traped inside the tire and bodda bing you are roosting again back in the race
