The YardFarmer team recently traveled to Silver Spring, Maryland, to help Nick and Mallory transform their mid-century Maryland home's landscape from a traditional BLAWN to a lush, native landscape that will benefit pollinators and local wildlife!
Nick and Mallory had already been hard at work on this yard for several years, but after watching a YardFarmer video decided to hire Daryl to help bring their dreams to life! And thanks to Garden for Wildlife, they were able to get hundreds of native plants to make that dream a reality!
This is part 3 of a 3 part series, where Daryl, Mallory, Nick, their son Aiden, and three hired hands spend 12 grueling hours transforming the entire property!

I'm Daryl. I really hate mowing the lawn.
That’s how all of this began: a search for landscaping alternatives that don't require sacrificing every Saturday morning to the mower.
As a certified permaculture designer, I help transform boring, basic lawns into beautiful yards that take care of us the way we take care of them.

Really inspiring. It's so gutsy to do something like this when surrounded by typical suburban yards. But all the blood sweat and tears (not to mention $$) will be worth it in a few years when nature is thriving right outside your door. And I bet it will inspire others to start thinking outside the typical lawn.

Totally agree! Nick poured so much into this project, we can't wait to share what he's accomplished when all of this grows in!

This turned out amazing and I can't wait to see it mature. Taking a lot of notes for my own property (which is a long process since we do not have the ability to do it all at once haha).

Thank you! It's a good idea to break things up, ESPECIALLY with a big property! Good luck!

Ah!!! Yay!! I can't wait to see this fill in in a couple years. Heck, I can't wait to see it one year from now, just to see. It's going to be a beautiful space for sure. Love the path stones and mulch combo which will eventually be groundcovers. I prefer the choice of wild ginger over the white clover, but that's probably because where I live in Tennessee, I think white clover is an invasive whereas the ginger is native. Don't quote me on that though. I love the compost area and the swales! Christmas fern is one of my favorites. Great choice there, and the asters! It's so good. So excited to see more like this and mature gardens that started similarly. Go, Yardfarmer, GO!

Thank you so much! This was an exciting project, and we can't wait to see it grow, too! The white clover and wild ginger will be a mix based off of how it's coming in on its own, nature always finds a way!

This is so inspiring! I am looking forward to to seeing how it all fills in in the future. I have a large yard in south central PA that I am slowly trying to introduce more native plants to, so it was fascinating to watch this process happen in an area not too far away.

how amazing! Even better, NO invasive creeping Bermuda grass

Yes! I'm putting together a plan for this right now. We have stiltgrass, clover and dandelion on almost the entire 7000 sq ft lot, and I ignorantly spread seeds from bags for birds without thinking so you can imagine how bad it got lol

Inspiring work! Looks like you need at least twice as many plants though. Too much space in between for weeds. This will be a maintenance nightmare if you don’t add more. Packera, Pussytoes, Sedges, Green-and-Gold, Heath Aster, Purple Love Grass are great groundcover options throughout. Also, the stepping stones should‘ve been spaced how a normal person walks, not so spread out and awkward. Pay attention to how people walk.

Beautiful!! Notes taken. Any tips on how to find low cost native plants? You mentioned they got some for free which is great!

Okay I'm loving what you're doing. Do you have any resources for beginner landscapers you would recommend? I'm really interested in your layout process, and where you're sourcing your native plants. Tangent: DnD is awesome and my players don't have to roll if it seems like they should just be able to do it. Like if the DC is lower than their modifier why are we even having a conversation about rolling? Tell us about your character!

We're still finding the right balance and trying to get a group together! :) As for resources, Oregon State University has a fantastic course on permaculture that can be taken online, I took it and it's worth every penny! For local plants, we use a local perennial nursery that carries a ton of local native stock, if you're in the mid-west or east of that Garden for Wildlife does some amazing stuff, as does High Country Gardens for the rest of the country!

What method did you use to clear the lawn/non-natives? Did you sheet mulch everything? Did you do any spraying? Thanks.

Weird question... Do you have to be licensed to do install like this in your state?
@yardfarmerco

Hi! You won't need a license to plant the plants, but anything structural you'll want to make sure you have a licensed landscape architect on hand to make sure everything is up to local code!

"For free, for free!" Nothing is for free. Someone paid for it with cash or labor. You may not know who, but someone paid.
