Time to bring in another ton of wood pellets on the 7-1/4" gauge Mill Brook Railroad. This time, we're pairing two locomotives to a single radio control transmitter and putting one engine on each end of the train.
Did you know? The Mill Brook Railroad is funded entirely by RU-vid ad revenue and patrons on Patreon! You can help support the Mill Brook Railroad by becoming a patron as well. You'll get advance access to videos and some exclusive content.

I think that there's a really big chance that the Mill Brook Railroad is known on the every continent which makes it world famous 😋 Let's check - Europe here 🇵🇱 🇪🇺

First time I've seen the 70 and 71 broadside. Lots of size different and style changes. Neat engines! I liked the unusal photo angles and especially the DP train in the far curve by itself.

Always good to watch you having fun with your railroad and doing something useful at the same time. Are those dips in the track caused by frost heaving?
@MillBrookRailroad
@MillBrookRailroad Год назад
They're caused by heavy loads more than anything else. I'm down to having two frost heave areas since doing some drainage work the last couple years.

Should have a rerailing frog and have prongs on the side of the flat cars so when cars derails the load doesnt spill out
@MillBrookRailroad

We don't usually have a problem with loads spilling, even when we derail. Rail speed is pretty slow.

Now you officially have a DPU.
@paulsmith5398
@paulsmith5398 Год назад
Just a suggestion, some spring-loaded chain tensioners might keep the chains from coming off, and will compensate for the suspension on the drive axles. Great video!, and great that you have the DPU! 😀😃👍👍👍👍❤🇺🇸❗
@MillBrookRailroad
@MillBrookRailroad Год назад
I'm trying to figure out if that is even necessary. There may be a simpler approach.
@paulsmith5398
@paulsmith5398 Год назад
@@MillBrookRailroad when you put that chain back on, i noticed there was some slack in it, a chain tensioner would eliminate the slack, and also would keep the chains
@paulsmith5398
@paulsmith5398 Год назад
@@MillBrookRailroad keep the chains tight and much less likely to break, especially when you need full power to pull a loaded train. I saw a comment about the track/derailments, and the commenter needs to take into consideration that winter weather can play havoc with railroads both small scale and full size, so you are not alone in that neck of the woods. (But 1/8 scale is much easier to put back on track than the big guys!)
@paulsmith5398
@paulsmith5398 Год назад
@@MillBrookRailroad well, hmmmmm, i still think spring-loaded chain tensioners would be the best, but the other alternative would be to make the drive axles adjustable towards the ends of the locomotive, and that would entail more work to install with adjustable pillow blocks and setscrews, which would have to be adjusted more often due to chain stretch, which is normal. Some recreational mini-bikes and go-carts have those spring loaded chain tensioners, which eliminate a lot of problems.
@paulsmith5398
@paulsmith5398 Год назад
@@MillBrookRailroad you might wonder why i am suggesting spring-loaded tensioners, and thats because when i was employed, i kept expensive machinery running that the chains had to be manually tensioned, and that was a huge pain in the hind end. Some, but not all, automotive engines have various types of spring-loaded tensioners for both internal and external components, and they work very well. Good luck with whichever method you choose, whether its yours, or someone elses!

nice to see some switching. You almost didn't have enough head room to clear that siding with the plow, 3 flat cars and two units! :) Nice!!! :) Having a helper engine on the rear for both down grade and up grade does make a difference in the train dynamics............on another note, I wonder if you or your buddy could make a couple re rail frogs? Even if you got wood and shaped it to a ramp with an edge angled toward the rail as it went up. You could just wedge them in and outside the rail and pull the flat car over it and it would be easier than trying to get the chains off, and using that lever you have. Obviously this would only work if the wheels are still close to the rail when off.

Good day sir. As always a fantastic video. Now, love the DPU action but the derailment takes away from the DPU. You have as much trouble with your system as a big corporation does with there system. one ton of pellets good move, with all the freezing / thawing it shifts track all over. I am surprised that it stays in gauge as well as it does. it did work well having “the helper” at the end of the train. are the speeds synchronized so they are the same? not sure of the capabilities of the electronic drive system . works great, have a great day.

Your video made my day especially when you speed up the process of loading and unloading, great stuff. Looks like it worked pretty well with a few minor glitches. How hard would it be to install upright track switches instead of having to bend down all the time?
@MillBrookRailroad
@MillBrookRailroad Год назад
I used to have switch stands. I took them out after one of my boys broke the handle off the third time, horsing around the rail yard. It wouldn't be too hard to install new ones, but I have come to appreciate the simplicity of the sprung throw rod. It makes every switch a spring switch, and I really like that. I would give it up for foot operated ground throws, though. That would be nice. It's way down the list of priorities, though.

It is an arbitrary number, but based on track engineering principles. If I add tie plates to the light rail I have, then that supports the rail better and I can increase axle loading.
