For reference: the lady with the basket at the end of the video is a palenquera, a women from Palenque in Colombia, the first free African town in America; it's really important the reference because her represents freedom and the right to live with dignity and she's looking what's going on now using a traditional dress who have the Colombian flag colors (yellow, blue & red) but the colors are upside down, a recent symbol that was generated in the last protests to say "you are killing us!" because the red means the blood of heroes and innocent people who died for our liberty

Hi there! The woman at the end of the music video is a Palenquera Woman from the northern Colombian coast. Palenquera women are always smiling and sharing positive energy, so seeing her walk through the scene at the end with a serious and sad expresion is very impactful. I believe that even the order of the colors of the dress has meaning. During last year's protests in Colombia, it was common to see Colombians share images of the Colombian flag upside down and the color red bolder than the blue and yellow. The red in the Colombian represents the blood shed all throughout Colombian history (among other things), so people would edit the flag this way to recognize the increase of deaths.

When he mentions the fact that 2Pac is named after Tupac Amaru, the leader of the largest Inca uprising against the Spanish colonizers, they show an indigenous child being suspended on the air being held by his arms and legs. That is part of how Tupac Amaru was tortured and killed. They tied his extremities to horses, kind of like they are holding that child, and dismembered him having the horses pull his body in different directions.

@@KoalaKam From class of history in Peru, I remember that prior to his death, Tupac Amaru and Micaela Bastidas (his wife) were forced to watch all their family killed (their oldest son included) in front of them, tongue cut and then hanged. Micaela was next and lastly Tupac Amaru. They cut his tongue and tied his arms and legs to 4 horses to be dismembered, but they couldn’t due to his physical strength and since they had made it a public affair, in the main Square of Cuzco, the capital of the ancient Incan empire, they eventually had to behead him, to then dismember him with machetes, to ‘teach’ the people what would happen if they rised against the Spanish crown.

The reference to the students is to the "43 de Ayotzinapa," 43 students that "disappeared" that were kidnapped on a bus never to be seen again in Mexico until they found their bodies in a mass grave. The reality being they were taken by the narcos and the government covered it up. The reasons behind their kidnappings and murders have never been known, it isn't so much about them being students and learning, though that metaphor makes sense in the video in reference to students in general in an oppressive government. The key to our freedom is knowledge and it is the biggest weapon against oppressors, so it would make sense that in the video they are trying to make that connection.

They never appeared... They are still missing. Their families continue to demand justice and they want the case to be properly investigated. The official version given by the government that the students had already been found was debunked long ago. The bodies found in the mass graves belong to other victims of drug trafficking who have nothing to do with the 43 students... I recommend the Netflix documentary "Los días de Ayotzinapa" and the book La verdadera noche de Iguala by Anabel Hernández for you to learn the reality of this case.

@@marinam3627, I must be mistaken then. I think people are missing the whole point of that image. It doesn’t only speak for the ayotzinapa 43. @oliviazuniga4677

@@franciscocruz5805 yes, the thing is many of the problems and events are repeated in many countries and apply to more than one country and/or event. Your efforts to go deeper and understand this story are immensely appreciated, what you are doing has much more value than you probably think, informing regular people in the US that have no idea of this, not because they are dumb or indifferent but because they have been lied to. Great job done by your guest, not much to add other than most of the violence and destabilization happening in Latin America is a result of US foreign policy and the Monroe Doctrine. People like Victor Jara were assassinated by dictatorships put in place and approved by the US government. Democratically elected presidents have been removed by the US to be replaced by corrupt governments that follow the US directive. The largest Mexican drug cartel is in fact the DEA and CIA. This song, like many from Residente, has in such a short time become a like a hymn, an anthem, a point of pride and inspiration of resistance and union for many Latin Americans that feel the story it tells and connect to it across borders. The references and metaphors are so many, I don't think most of us catch all of them. Thank you for making the effort to learn about our history and better understand the message of the song. There is a depth to it that I'm still trying to sink into. Even being familiar with a lot of the history and understanding the language, I continue to learn and discover more the more I watch it. The song opens up a lot of discussion and interconnects Latin Americans with the history of violence against the black community and other oppressed communities in the US that Gambino alludes to in his song, the difference is that a lot of the violence in Latin America is a result of outside influence, the US being one of the biggest perpetrators. There are so many layers and history that maybe even a semester of college would begin to graze over much of what the song references, bc this is history that runs deep and spreads over centuries and an entire continent 😅

I don't agree with the way people criticized you in the comments because you didn't know any better, but the fact that you had the humility to reach out for some help to make a follow-up video is very admirable. There are so many more meanings in every image, there could be an entire college course on this. The only thing that I'll point out since it's such a main component is that the opening photo that says "This Is Not America" in front of the outline of the U.S. is actually from a campaign by Chilean artist and filmmaker Alfredo Jaar. He displayed that on the giant LED screen in Times Square in 1987 and it was displayed again in 2014. There was also another image displayed that said "This Is Not America's Flag" in front of a U.S. flag.

Something very important about this song is that Residente himself claims that in this times of rethinking the names and meaning of the words of all the languages all over the world, the people from the US and from all over the world that refers to the US citizens and their country as Americans and America respectively should start using a different nationality for them and themselves, as we in Spanish call people from the US, "estadounidenses". Also. he claims and shows with the images, his and our nuisance about all this identity misconceptions and the lack of consciences of some people about the invisible hand of all the past century governments in the US in almost all of the dictatorships in the rest a America. Chile: Víctor Jara was also tortured. After that, they broke his fingers and cut his tongue, precisely because he was a singer who played the guitar. The black lady at the end of the video in Colombian colors is using typical clothing from a certain part of Colombia, traditional clothing used for selling specific food products (in Afro-Colombian communities in the Caribbean part of the country, where I come from). There are a LOT of references to Colombia: the "false positives" scandal was a mass murder done by the military in our country, randomly killing innocent peasants in order to show their bodies as guerrilla soldiers. You can even read it in Wikipedia: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/%22False_positives%22_scandal

#Respect for doing this again and trying to understand better yourself and for others the meaning of this message for us and our latinamerican history being a part of America as well as you guys are. By the way the map of USA in the beginning is a wink to what the chilean artist artist Alfredo Jaar displayed in a billboard in Time Square originally back in 1987, so as you see this is not the first time someone has talked about the subject abd the relationship between US and the Latin community when we're all part of thr same land. Thanks again for taking the time to share and try to understand this magnificent piece of art in the whole concept! Thank you for your reaction and genuine interest in knowing the meaning of the video. Some precisions: Please, don't call them communities, be more respectful, they are ancient highly advanced cultures! The indigene as the Statue of the Liberty might be a local north American local, there exist a lot you know? until British massacred them. Drums came a great influence in music, from African slaves Spanish brought. Latin America has a young population, many students all over the continent have been raising their voices to stop violence, poverty and intrusion from the USA for decades. By the way, CIA, FBI, NGOs are pushing and manipulating at their convenience. They don't care to place dictators, killing people, etc. Also, drug consumption has increase exponentially in the USA proportionally yo the weapons purchases and violence in Latino America coincidence? The politician is not kissing the flag, is cleaning his mouth with it. Regarding corporations, all of them sell their products predominantly, affecting the local customs, and nutritional habits, predating natural resources, and many times stealing territories and polluting the environment.

As a first generation Mexican-American, who frequently visited my families home country Mexico, I always thought it was weird that people called me Estadounidense ( a person of the Unites States) instead of “American” because that’s what I was taught in school here, it wasn’t until I took it upon myself to learn more about where I come from that I finally understood why! This video is a masterpiece and a way of protest to erase what the word “America” means to others and even to ourselves! Thank you so much not only for reacting but also trying to understand what this amazing artist has always been trying to do through his entire musical career which is to educate others and give voice to the oppressed!

A concretion on the smiling soldiers posing with the boot on the corpses (28:12). It's true that, since they wear red berets, it's a reference to militarism in Venezuela. But I've no doubt that an analogy is also made with the US abuses and torture in Iraq, in the Abu Ghraib prison, of which there are photos very similar to the scene mounted here. Something that Residente also wants to denounce in this song is the habitual interventionism of the USA in other countries, supporting governments (including dictatorships) or helping to overthrow them according to their geopolitical interests. That said, congratulations to Alejandro for such a detailed and accurate analysis of the video. And to Koalacam for that interest in learning and understanding beyond what is taught in the USA about the history of the continent.

This video / song has sooooo many layers. Between the lyrics and the visuals... it's just a work of art. The wording that he uses on this song... he's not just rapping in Spanish, there's slang here (he's from Puerto Rico) there are words here that can't be translated back to english that have so much weight, fury, power: right off the bat he starts "Estamos aquí (we're here) and then he says "mérame! (mírame), which is something we say to call someone's attention, not just literally saying look at me, but it's more like -pay attention, hear me out, listen to me" ..."encabronau'- doesn't mean just upset, it means he's effin pissed, he's done, he's angry to another level..."frontú' " , is like an -in your face- attitude - Both the lyrics AND the video can be broken down individually because they're both deep. So powerful, so much depth. The more you watch it the more details you keep discovering. On the part when he mentions Tupac's name, y'all noticed how they were holding an indigenous man on his limbs?? That's what they actually tried to do with the real Tupac Amaru, the indigenous leader. They tied his limbs to horses so he could be ripped apart and failed, so he was killed afterwards, if I'm not mistaken. Residente is brilliant, whether the haters want to accept it or not. 🤣 Thank you for taking the time to go deeper and and trying to really understand this message. 🙏

Im not versed well enough about the other countries to give context, but I can for Peru, that part when he is talking about 2Pac being named after a peruvian, hes talking about Tupac Amaru, and hispanic-indigenous who rebelled against the Spanish crown, tou can say he was the head of the revolution agains them, the thing is, he was betrayed, emprisoned, tortured, he was forced along with his wife to watch how the hang all his family and close friends, how they cut their tongues, after that he witness also the execution of his wife (who actually played a major part in this revolution), and after all of that, they attached all his limbs to horses to dismember him, witch somehow didnt work, so they cut all his limbs with an axe, they say his screams in agony were so hearthbreaking that there was no coming back to being under the Spanish command, that's what it's shown in the video.

The man who got in the video shot is Victor Jara, he was a musicia who was tortured and then murdered in the late 70's during pinochet's dicatorship here inChile. He sang for the people and their well being and for what was actually fair, that is why he got arrested. As a musician, the way he was tortured was he got his fingers cut off and later he got shot. Amazing that you took the time to do this man, greetings from chile.
