I've had to feed at dusk to avoid the robbing. Yellow jackets have been awful this year too.
@JeromeBeeFarm
@JeromeBeeFarm 8 дней назад
Hey Nancy. Yeah, the yellow jackets are bad here as well. I put out watermellons for the chickens and they can't get to them for the yellow jackets. The honey bees are fighting the yellow jackets on the mellons too. We need some rain badly, and I'm probably greener here than most of the state. I got that 6" rain 3 weeks ago, the rest of the state didn't get any of that. Thanks for watching and good luck!

I had a hive with two deeps that the state been inspector and I thought was queenless. I checked it again that weekend and saw no eggs, but some capped brood. I decided to use a swarm I had caught to do a newspaper combine. In the process of combing them I dropped a lot of comb from the swarm trap down inside of the swarm box. It was a mess. Lesson learned, move them into a regular deep as soon as you catch them. I went ahead and combined them. The next week I went back in and found 6 emergency queen cells, all capped, in the top box, which was from the swarm. Oh boy. This is not a good time to just let them emerge and try to mate with almost no drones around. I then went into the bottom box and found fresh eggs. What? I checked and there was a queen in there. What I figured out was I forgot to put a few slits in the newspaper when I combined them. They could not smell the queen below and so they drew out emergency cells. I tore them all down and closed it back up. Today I checked again and she is laying quite well. Lots of lessons learned. Thanks for another great video.

Hey Al. That's an interesting story. lol I never thought of a newspaper of causing supercedure cells. I guess it would if they couldn't get thru it in time. I probably should have waited a week and done another inspection on #15 before the hasty combine. I've gotten conditioned to finding them queenless, and then three wax moth disasters, so I jumped on it and combined it right off. Evidently it was queenless, since the original #10 queen was still in there, or she was the victor of the queen fight. lol Hopefully she will do a good job next year and contribut to a nice honey harvest. Thanks for watching!

Excessive heat and lack of rain have been a challenge here too this year - extended wet when the locust and goldenrod blooming so bees were not flying (collecting nectar) and hot and dry between rains that were usually 8 weeks apart. Asters peak blooming now but again no rain in over two weeks and frost just around the corner. Been feeding like crazy most costly $$$ this year with increased prices. Like you feeding my small nucs extracted honey to heavy them up as time has run out. I expect a lot of newer beekeepers won't know what all they need to do so expect nuc sales to be larger than normal next spring.
@JeromeBeeFarm
@JeromeBeeFarm 8 дней назад
Hey Nancy. Sounds like we have the same things going on. Those Asters are pretty, but I think they have little nectar with the dryness. I mainly see native insects on them, no honey bees. 25lbs of Great Value sugar is now $20. 2020, I think it was a little over $14. Both nucs my friend in Tulsa purchased didn't succeed. They expanded nice, but then suddenly failed. Same thing happened to him last year with the same beekeeper. I think they are selling nucs with old queens and they superceed late in the year and aren't successful. The hive I gave him in springtime is still doing well. It was this year's mated queen in May. I sold two other nucs, and could have sold more. Thanks for watching and good luck!

Darren, not sure if the first hive will make it this late, unless you can take a few honey frames from another hive and give them. as you know this late only the strong will survive. good luck buddy! 🙃😊

Hey Billy Boy. I have a couple of honey frames left in the freezer. I'd like to hold on to them for late winter/spring though. I have that #12 hive slated for a combine if the opportunity arrises. I may also do a double screen combine with it to overwinter, and then break them apart in the spring. I still have 3-4 weeks left to move hives around and combine before I'm all set for winter. Thanks for watching.

Oh boy😂 where can i get a wax moth patterned super😂 enough problem with the blasted chalkbrood showing up this spring, it's not heavy but its there in smidges but i got a nice surprise trying the apiguard thymol gel, it cleaned up the chalkbrood 😂👍 fast too. Ive just never used it before because my main honey crop is thyme so i get natural thymol from thyme nectar, but man its awesome. Definitely adding it to the spring treatment. Great to hear you're supporting local equipment guys i love Ceracell but im a kiwi😂 great video 👍👋 week away thyme blossom
@JeromeBeeFarm
@JeromeBeeFarm 8 дней назад
I should start selling those wax moth designer boxes. lol I use feeding supplments that have thymol in them as well. It's also supposed to be hard on the mites. I never thought about thymol coming from thyme. lol I guess that makes sense. Curious what thyme honey tastes like. Yeah, Thomas at Ceracel started sending me their products a couple years ago. I started out purchasing the top feeders, which I love. He's sent me several of the hive defender bottoms and the beast blocker entrance / robbing blockers. They work great. I also use the Ceracel nuc sized top feeders. There's three distributors in the US.

@@JeromeBeeFarm thyme is mowed here in central Otago to sell for dry herb processing and thymol oil extraction, my apairys have too many rocks to mow any fortunately 😁 thyme honey has a strong taste, medicinal almost, it's not a popular honey as a table honey in New Zealand, most of it gets sold to Europe where it's popular, very little ends up in the local markets. It used to be blended with manuka honey to make a blended honey like a bush honey but that's not done anymore because of manuka honeys sudden rise in popularity. Manuka used to be in the same boat as thyme honey, some beekeepers would rush to pull the bee's out of bush blocks when manuka flowered because it's impossible to extract without a pin force agitator like heather honey or crushing the entire comb.

That sure is dicey to inspect when they are so prone to rob. I hate that time of the year. I'm hoping for some colder weather to keep them in the box a bit more. We had the warmest Sept on record with no rain here in MN. Have a great weekend. Was that old Slash at the end?

Hey Russell. Yeah, it happens so fast, and once it gets started, it goes for a long time. Those were younger bucks. I thought that second one was him for a bit, but his ear isn't cut in the right spot, or deep enough. I haven't seen Slash since March when his rack was still coming in. He usually shows back up this time of year. Thanks forn watching!

It is not odd. Sometimes is killing my bees. Had 3 do the same thing. No queen, brood or eggs. Had to combine 2 and 1 died. One of the 2 combined still died. No brood disease and treated for mites early. OA. Got sick over summer a died fast. Neighborhood gets insecticide treatment and I think it got to my bees.

I noticed some of your frames aren't drawn on the sides, any tips on how to get them to drawl comb on the sides? I rub additional wax on the undrawn ends, but they just steal it and won't finish drawing the frames
@Manuherikiabeekeeping
@Manuherikiabeekeeping 8 дней назад
Hi 👋 I'm assuming you use plastic frames and foundation, it seems to be a problem with those, they do get drawn on the edge but much slower than mine which are old school wood frames and wax foundation sheets but even with those they will draw them out in arcs because that's how they wild draw wax naturally. Perhaps you could try dipping your foundation to really get the wax on, I've never used plastic myself but some of the hobbyists I teach do and I cleaned up a box for one of them and melted wax and double rolled each frame with liquid wax on with a small roller it seemed to give a decent coat of wax out to the edges
@JeromeBeeFarm
@JeromeBeeFarm 8 дней назад
Hey Unlikelybeek. The wax crayon trick will work, but you have to be in a strong nectar flow for them to draw out any type of frame, wax foundation, natural, plastic, etc, and they do need a good wax coating. You can feed them 1:1 and they will draw some as well. In the spring, I will wax those corners again and in a strong hive, they will draw them out. It also helps to move them away from the outside positions, 2-3 frames away from brood. Basically you need a strong nectar flow, and good waxed coating.
@theunlikelybeek
@theunlikelybeek 6 дней назад
@JeromeBeeFarm Thanks for your reply. I am using wood frames with black plastic foundation that I heavily waxed, but they drew out the frames in the middle but just robbed the coating from the sides and didn't draw comb on the sides. I shook the bees off and rubbed the sides with wax and they robbed it again instead of drawing comb, so I was hoping for another option I guess I'll wait & see if they are willing to draw in the spring. Thanks aga8n for your reply

Yes, plenty, especially since my hives get about 50% shade. Strong hives keep them at bay. I don't do anything to keep them under control other than the colonies take care of them.

Hello Hello ya looks like your robbing is about like mine is . Also I got home late this afternoon from where we sale honey an stuff an found a big surprise I had a D??? Swarm in the air about the size of a football. I said the heck with them an if still around in the morning I will deal with them then . I went back out around 10:30 pm an they were still on the side of a big Oak tree.🤷‍♂️🤷‍♂️🤦🤦🤦. I think this is the latest I have ever had a swarm. Take care an have a good week. Hope all is doing well. Thanks
@JeromeBeeFarm
@JeromeBeeFarm 8 дней назад
Hey Kathy. I've had three late swarms this year like that. I think this unseasonably warm weather is causing them. Two I made good use of to requeen, the third fizzled with the queen disappearing. The two that got mated will likely be low performers with the low drone count. We'll see - I need to notate that and be intentional about monitoring their performance. There's no rain in the forecast here for another week looks like. That 6" of rain I got was very localized so I'm pretty lucky to have gotten it. Most of the state is in severe drought right now. The trees are dropping leaves and the grass has turned brown everywhere. Thanks for watching.
