Have you ever felt like God really wanted you to do something, but you just weren’t ready for it? Maybe it’s a big life change, a relationship, or a vocation, but there’s something holding you back from saying yes to God’s call.
People may be inclined to think that this is a bad thing, and might put themselves down, saying they aren’t open to God’s will in their lives. But what if this back-and-forth with God is the one thing we need to really say yes?
When we wrestle with God, we’re not only engaging in relationship with him, but we’re being truly honest with him. He desires conversation with us, and it’s in wrestling with what God wants for our lives that we conform our hearts to his.
We may think we know God’s vocation for us, or his plan for our life, and that may scare us. But the truth is, we will never really be sure what God wants us to do until he really shows us. We can project sometimes. Right now, all he wants us to do is be his: to dedicate ourselves and our lives to him and his works, and to live every day as an opportunity to reach holiness.
Don’t pick a fight with God, thinking we know what he may want us to do someday. But don’t be afraid to wrestle with him today, because it can give us the strength and understanding needed to do his will.

A week ago I wrote a reflection called “Wrestling with God.” Since the timing is immaculate, I thought I’d share with whomever wants to read: I know that God is calling me to surrender to Him, but surrendering would require action, change and accommodation. But usually, before people feel the need to surrender, they wrestle, contend, or fight. I’m wrestling with God. And this is not a one time thing. It will be a reoccurring process as my life progresses. And yes, I already know God will win the match, but I cannot fast forward. I cannot see the ending or know why this is happening. I can only dive into it. But as I wrestle with God, I’m careful. I know better than to betray his laws. So even though my heart and mind are a battlefield, I will still act and conduct myself in a manner that is not entirely displeasing to him...at least to the best of my ability. Nothing is obvious to me right now. But I have no choice but to keep walking forward as honorably as I can, and to be honest in my new spiritual and intellectual journey. One that I know will circle back to the home I already found. ❤️

Beautiful. As time ticks by, I too am getting attuned to a spiritual enlightenment of faith. I wish the global Catholic community reflect more and dont just let life pass on. We should live our faith and not take it for granted...... it's okay to wrestle with God, He will only bless you fighting. The walk uphill for Catholics is a struggle but it's worth the climb. I think it all depends dear . I will share you my experience growing up I was sent to girls school in my country since age of 4 until adolescents. I forgot to mention it was with nuns exciting 😊 I mean it was hard I remember praying so much that I question but well I followed I force to lol. I think when I was 16 I realized I was well educated and blessed to be there . I was even thinking to be a nun at that time not by force but because there was this beautiful desire to serve God. After I finish I went to college then my thoughts changed and well got married shortly after then had my first born. I’m thankful that I was given this chance to be a mother and I don’t regret it but if I wasn’t marry I would have gone back to serve God

The way I understood it is like this: if God really does call you to somewhere / something that you aren’t ready for, you get to wrestle with Him (I’m kind of there right now). If you start pessimistically trying to predict what He’s going to ask of you, based on your fears or sense of guilt, you’re picking a fight. For example, I feel guilt about being useless at helping people in practical ways (e.g. babysitting). I blame God for looking harshly on me for not doing the “right thing”. Except that He’s never yet actually asked me to do what I’m not good at. My guilt does all the talking and I end up blaming God for what only exists inside my own head...

In life we sometimes have lightbulb moments, for me one of the greatest enlightenments came when I read and understood the poem referred to as Carrion Comfort. It was written by a 19th century Jesuit Priest, Gerard Manley Hopkins. (Warning - it is impenetrable on a first reading but worth studying) It seemed clear to me from his poetry that he suffered depression and despondency. The poem provides hope for those who suffer in life and blame God for the way He treats them. He poses the question to himself as to who he should cheer, God who is throwing him around or himself who struggles with God and he concludes he should cheer both. The wrestling with God that Fr Mike refers to is not just in life's tough decisions, but it also comes with suffering and with misfortune in life. It provides insight into the difficult question of why God makes us suffer in life. I learned the poem in 1973 and I remember it, verbatum et literatum to this day. God bless anyone who reads this post. There is two minutes you will never get back!! Hah.

@@Elven. I get why you say that. We struggle with life; suffering is a part of life and sometimes we just don't get why God does to us what he does and why Life is the way it is. Life is very scary at times. I find comfort in these thoughts; life is incredibly short compared to eternity; pain suffering and adversity provides purification for our souls, even if we don't see it yet (again, the poem provides illumination on that). We do not understand now but we will understand when we die. In the meantime when we feel a desire to reject our faith because it is all too hard we need to say with humility "Father, thy will be done."; (as taught to us by Jesus in His passion and as reinforced by Saint Louisa Piccaretta) and also "Jesus I trust in you." as taught to us by Saint Faustina. Lastly, one of my prayers during the day is to say "Please give my family friends and myself the graces we need to get through the day." I think that endurance is sometimes easier with the help of God's grace and we should ask for that. Don't look for another God, we are on the right track and we will be very happy to have put our faith in God. God bless you.

Have you tried the Divine Mercy Chaplet ? It's of great comfort for end times. It was given by God to St Faustina in preparation for His second coming. There are great miracles associated with the Chaplet ! For those not aware please check Fr Chris Alar from the Divine Mercy channel ! He's from the shrine. God bless !

@@godisinchargesueowl8599 Hi Sue, There are many of us that pray the Chaplet every day at 3pm. I would also encourage people to join the Divine Mercy confraternity where our intentions for the rosary are joined, and we effectively pray for each other. But on the Divine Mercy Chaplet, it is good for Catholics to become familiar with it as it can be prayed for a person who is dying. St Faustina discusses the Graces that flow directly from Jesus in those circumstances. There is so much more to our religion than I ever got from sermons at Mass and Catholic schools religion classes! Thanks for posting this suggestion Sue!

um, hello. I am currently struggling with this kind of stuff. I have trouble recognizing the things I hear are whether if it is just the thoughts from my mind, the devil's temptation, or what God tells me to do. I get that I shouldn't pick a fight with God, but how should I handle this struggle? How would I really know if it's God telling me to do something? or not?

Gotta say, the videos from Fr. Mike on this channel have been phenomenal for me. Was raised Christian but turned away from God/The Chruch around age 14. Twelve years later I felt spiritually dead within and very lost, well before the whole epidemic. Finding these videos has helped so much in getting back into consuming God's word, praying, and surrounding myself in content that promotes the Lord. And it feels pretty good! Definitely know what that wrestle can be like. Especially when you're still learning so much.

Last year I was exactly where you are. I was in the middle of my "period of intentional singleness" to focus on my faith and career. During that time I grew closer in friendship with a coworker. We started dating in March and got engaged in October. Take time to focus on the Lord and pray for your future spouce. They may not be a person you would like right now, they may have some changing to do before you two can build a relationship.

I converted from Protestantism when I was 19 almost 25 now and I have those same feelings that it was easier when I was Protestant. I’ve had times of wanting to walk away because of lack of support and things that God was asking it’s definitely hard but worth it...keep going! He’s got you!

Really needed this. I struggle with understanding who and what God is and isn't. I was raised southern evangelical so God is responsible for hurricanes or God made this bad thing happen because you sinned. RCIA didn't really cover understanding God so I don't know where to turn. I have this deep fear that if I truly and fully trust in Jesus and God that He will make something bad happen to 'test' me, or that He will make something bad happen but call it good. I need to be more open about that in my prayers and ask for understanding.

Thank you, I really appreciate you talking about these things, it's a great help, your perspective was vital to my journey so far and I mean that literally. If you don't mind, would you talk about wrestling with God in the case of feeling abandoned/ wronged by Him too? That would be amazing because you have a lot of insight on uncomfortable scenarios. And I know I'm not alone in this, I recently heard from people in the context of spiritual and clerical abuse and they share a lot of my pain in the context of the relationship with God. Thank you for considering. :) Oh and could Ascension Press please make their prints more accessible? I'm from Germany and it is always sooooo difficult to partake in the events like the Advent preparation because the books don't ship to Germany. No one can see God. God reveals Himself through dreams and visions only. The Bible clearly says Moses is the only exception. Therefore, Jacob did not wrestle with God. Jacob wrestled with an angel. Angel represented God but not God Himself. Jacob thought he wrestled with God. That was just his unilateral proclamation not confirmed by any other Bible verses. In Hosea 12:4, Jacob's opponent is described as "malakh", which means angel.

I’ve been wrestling with the thought of whether the priesthood is for me. I’m 24 and currently an undergrad student waiting to graduate in Spring 2021. My parents believe that me wanting to possibly become a priest is all in my head and that I’ll ultimately get out of this “phase.”

Maybe try going on a retreat for those discerning. Talking to a vocations director in your diocese is a good start. You don’t have to commit to anything, just talking about it might give you more insight

It's not a phase, it's a fork in the road in which you make a decision. Doing God's will will bring you happiness. He is our eternal Father. Maybe the priesthood isnt for you. Maybe it is. This is your time to find out. I agree with the recommendation to speak to a vocations director.

#AskAscension Fr Mike I have struggled for years since about the age of 10 about feeling a possible call to Priesthood so for 16 years IV been too scared to put an application because I am not too academic as well as not being able to drive, yet I feel that pull still. Joining the seminary does not mean you automatically need to become a priest. I know more than a few men who entered seminary but ultimately did not become a priest

Father Mike, how do I know God is calling me to something? Or should I know? I'm not a very good Catholic and I've only gone to church a handful of times, but I am trying to change that and learn more to better myself and those around me.

The first thing is to confess directly to God, and then receive the sacrament of reconciliation with a priest. After that, attend mass weekly on Sat vigil/Sun (if available in your area currently). That’s just my advice for bettering yourself. As far as God calling you, I’m probably no help there.

Go to the sacraments first. It's your way of telling God you're open to His plan. Like the prodigal son, God will run out to you and accept you back into His family. He won't force anything.

But if what you do helps others more than it hurts, and maybe if it even goes against your own desires, then maybe it’s God making His will for you known more strongly than if it was an easy decision for you to make. I guess that doing what you’re called to do usually isn’t an epiphany moment, but requires struggle. So if you have a clearer idea of what to do **after** your struggle, then that’s probably the idea to follow.

No. I knew a priest, to whom Jesus Christ had appeared during communism. He used to be a philosophy teacher before. One day when he was around 30, Jesus Christ actually appeared in his bedroom in few hours long vision. His journey started with Christ around 30, and it was even a few years later that he entered seminary. I think he was around 39 when he became a priest. Be brave, brother, and if God is calling you to priesthood, dare to answer His calling! :)

Not at all. My favorite local priest just turned 60 (or close to it), but he didn’t become a priest until about 40, give or take a couple of years. 29 is a perfect age, because it may take until your mid to late 30s to become ordained.

Thanks. I have no time for [unlike for you] -- Anyone who thinks he is 'god' himself who wants to do nothing but wrestle with me and as many other followers as he can find too. Like trying to wrestle me out the door to be next stolen from my family while at the same time my whole family and nation too being swindled in the process while expecting me to in an instant drop everything I am doing for my family and leave it behind too while moving to another nation. Wow Fr. Mike, your videos have been so timely always, thank you for this video! I've been for months now, wrestling with the calling to religious consecrated life but see so many barriers to being able to enter. I find that God wants me to talk and cry and rejoice and be angry as long as its a relationship with him..its ok to be worried and seek his guidance and his gift of Peace..He wants all your problems and questions..he has the answers! Be still and know he is God..give it all to him..then don't worry anymore..God is working on it!

I wrestled a bit too hard today with him. I was angry. My mom is battling cancer, Im going through a rough patch financially, and every day feels overwhelming, my sister even had her car stolen. It seems like my family and I cant catch a break. I feel cursed, and that he doesn't care. So today lashed out against him, angry. Do I feel bad yes, I also felt relieved I was honest with him.

Yeah....but God dislocated Jacob's hip before he blessed him. Not sure what that means, but I bet it didn't feel good for Jacob.

Father Smitz: I know God loves me but I want him to like me too, what can I do? I love my brother but he does drugs and has hurt me, so I do not like him. I am confused. (I am in no danger, my brother is very old now.)

That "wrestling" phase can often be helpful in learning how and why God wants certain things of us, why we're called to do certain things that on some occassion aren't in accordance with our will or ideas. Can be very important parts of our journey towards God.

Father Mike I have recently been having an existential dread. I have always thought about it but now that I am 19 I cannot stand the thought of leaving the world and being in eternity with God. I'm not saying I don't want to be with God, I am just scared. Could u or anyone pls help me with this

At your age, that fear you feel is perfectly natural. When you're young, healthy, and full of vitality, life seems filled with promise, and the world is your oyster, full of adventures to be had. So, the thought of "leaving it behind " will naturally be dreadful to you. Don't worry. As time goes by, you will indeed experience many of life's joys, but you'll also experience heart breaks and disappointments. As you get older, that fear and dread you're feeling now, will fade and be replaced by a kind of acceptance that one day, your life here on earth will end as it does for everyone. And, if you remain faithful, you will take comfort in the knowledge that the Lord's love and great mercy endures forever. At least, that's how it was, and is, with me (I'm 64). Hope this helps. Or if life plays it's games with you, you'll want to leave as soon as possible. If you like it here in this world, enjoy it for as much as you can. I know it sounds bad but don't wish to accept the fact that one day you'll die, in my experience God teaches not to be attached to things in very harsh ways

Interesting ..raises many questions..."wrestling" with God implies some kind of conflict-since God is perfect, any conflict is with ourselves..so maybe it should be described as "accepting"? God knows how things resolve before the conflict-and it will be resolved by his will. So maybe "wrestling" is the wrong term. At any rate, have failt and accept what life brings you.

The problem is half the time I don't even know what the call of the day is.😔 I'm eager to do whatever He wants me to do but I'm not sure what that is. There are things that seem to be put in my life but they conflict with each other, whichever one I do won't leave time to also do the other, how do I know which one He wants? I've prayed about it many times but the answer still isn't clear. In the meantime neither one is getting done.😕
