We recently spent 3 nights at Letaba Rest Camp which is situated on the Letaba River, midway between the southern and northern boundaries of the Kruger National Park. It's also roughly in the middle of the park west to east, so is in an ideal spot to explore the massive reserve. Here's my review of the rest camp.
The name means “river of sand”, and the sandy riverbed is an excellent location for game viewing, particularly elephant, which thrive in the area. Letaba is a green oasis in the surrounding mopane veld, and is a firm favourite with visitors.
The area around Letaba had been settled for millennia before the creation of Kruger Park. In the 1800s, the inhabitants of the land were the Ba-Phalaborwa people, a Sotho-speaking tribe who inhabited the area. They were primarily crop and cattle farmers, but had an extensive iron smithing expertise, trading their iron goods with Arab merchants along the east coast of southern Africa, in what is today Mozambique. The people of the area were removed during the creation of Kruger National Park, but most of their descendants live just outside the park's gates. (Wikipedia)

I’m Chris Corbet; video creator, photographer and fan of road trips, outdoor adventures, nature and remote places. I hope my videos might help those who want to experience gravel travel & off road adventures, and who don’t care as much about the vehicle that gets them there, as they do about the journey itself and the destination. I try to provide useful tips and background information about the unusual places that we visit, as well as endeavouring to draw attention to conservation, my intention is always to inform, educate and entertain.

There will never be a second chance to make a great first impression!
