Lethal drug or beneficial supplement? Here’s the truth about kratom

Kratom is a $1.5 billion a year industry in the U.S., but too few people know anything about it. You can find kratom at gas stations, vape shops, convenience stores, coffee shops, grocery stores… it’s more common than you may realize. But is it a beneficial botanical or a lethal opioid? Stay Tuned spent weeks talking to health experts, chronic and recreational users, a family who lost a loved one, the American kratom Association and others to find out what it is, what it’s used for, whether it’s dangerous, how should it be regulated, and ultimately, should it be legal. Find out why the substance is so difficult to regulate, and ultimately, whether or not it should be illegal.

Have you tried wild lettuce? It is an opioid like substance that is not addictive and there are 2 schools of people, 1 they no longer FEEL pain and are not addicted with use of tea or concentrated pastes, 2 they feel the pain (sometimes chronic) that still feel the pain but DONT CARE, OR IT DOESN'T BOTHER THEM. i am part of the second group and suffering nerve pain and occipital headaches without a cure or reason, feeling the pain that affects your life daily but being comfortably distanced from it without addiction sold me. When its too much wild lettuce works and i move on. Just start slow because you risk being stupid in concentrating it too much and then you stop breathing or other organ failure due to too high of a concentration.

How’s your tolerance? Is it still just as effective as when you began using it? For me, the tolerance and addiction was very problematic. I thought it was helpful (with PTSD) until I started needing bigger and bigger doses just to keep the brutal withdrawal symptoms from kicking in. I felt like a junkie. When I finally quit, it was really difficult and I swear, I’ve never been the same. My mood was absolutely terrible for about a year after I took my last dose. I suspect it screwed up my hormones and neurotransmitters in some way, but I’ll probably never know. Using Kratom was one of my worst decisions. That said, I don’t think it should be illegal. For some people it keeps them away from worse substances, and that’s a really good thing. If it helps you, I am happy that you found relief. I thought it’s definitely more tolerable for some people more than others.

@@tewtravelers9586 I haven't noticed any withdrawal. I've been using it for arthritis and depression/anxiety since 2014. My dosage has gone up slowly from 3g per dose to about 15g per dose. and I take 3-5 doses throughout the day. I don't take any on days I don't work and I've had three days off in a row and not even given a thought to kratom or noticed any ill effects. just that I don't feel as good physically. my mother tried it once and said she already felt like she was addicted and never took it again. so I guess it just depends on your personal chemistry.

@@BabyJesus66 I get mine from Blue Magic. Best brand I've tried in the last 4 years. They test everything for heavy metals, and Mytragynine content. Each container has a QR code that will show you the test results. Shipping is fast, the capsules are always consistently 600-625mg each, and high quality too. Strains are very consistent as well, and more potent than a lot of other brands. Another good brand which I really liked is Top Tree Herbs. But I stopped using them because they didn't often carry the strain I liked. They also do not sell high quantities. Their Red strains were very strong and sedative, but took nearly 2 hours to kick in. They mostly focus on selling Kratom in tea form too, which I'm not fond of but some people really seem to like it.

It also gives me really bad vertigo while it only relieves my pain about 50% of my pain about 65% of the time. Kratom relieves 100% of my pain about 99% of the time. Do you work for a pharmaceutical company? The pharmaceutical companies are doing the same thing to kratom they did with cannabis. They are natural products so there is no way to patent or trademark them. That means no exclusivity and no price gouging. So they put out a video like this so sheep like you will fall in line and vote the way they want you to if it ever comes to that. Been taking kratom for nearly a decade now. Still not dead, nor giving reach-arounds in the parking lot to sustain my use. Sometimes I run out, it's about 20 hours of sleeplessness and twitchy anxiety (the thing kratom alleviates for me) and then done. Just like caffeine or sugar withdrawal. But the industry has been attacked repeatedly by Scott Gottlieb (former FDA) while coincidentally the pharma industry was working on synthetic mitragyne speciosa. The LAST thing the kratom industry needs is teeny boppers and youtube videos calling it "Gas station crack".

I tried Kratom a while back n felt absolutely nothing. And I used it multiple times and increased the dosage each time. Not knocking it, but I didn't feel anything good from it. That being said, people claiming there's other people overdosing on it is wild to me. It made my mouth extremely dry and that was the extent of the negative effects of it FOR ME. The guy who's mom claims he ODed on Kratom has to be missing something there. Maybe an adverse reaction with his seizure meds, his Kratom was laced with a harmful substance or SOMETHING. I just find it hard to believe someone ODed and DIED on friggin Kratom. I have dual addiction n mental health struggles and I know people who swear by this stuff. So idk, maybe I'm missing something here.

There are a lot of different varieties. Out of all of them, green Meng Da is the only one that really has much effect on me. I like the stuff. Yes, it makes you feel pretty good for a while, more social, puts you in a better mood. But in a few hours, when it wears off, you may find yourself quite irritable, even out of character. Kratom IS physically addictive and it's likely that daily users who quit will experience weakness and severe fatigue for weeks, or even longer, after the initial few days of acute withdrawal (mild flu-like symptoms, body aches). The lasting fatigue (PAWS: post acute withdrawal symptoms) is the worst part of quitting, and you might find yourself searching the internet for any way to feel better. Ask me how I know, I've quit several times. Anyway, I am going to have to guess that kratom is definitely not good for the body. And no one knows the long term effects. That's my (hopefully taken as) unbiased opinion.

I always used to warn my customers to not mix kratom with SSRIS OR SEIZURE MEDS, Most kratom bars will tell you not to drink kratom if you are in any kind of ssris. and just to be safe I would tell my customers about the seizure meds as well. as I have heard a few stories from other customers on negative side effects they they believed it was due to mixing both. Just be safe and do your research on whatever you planning on putting in your body. Ps. Kava and alcohol shouldn't go together either as it can cause liver damage or even failure is high.

@@ArcheoX-Files one very positive thing kratom did for me was help me quit drinking alcohol. After I started using kratom, I lost my cravings for whiskey, which I had drank on a daily basis for years. Looking back at how healthy that change was for me, I can say that kratom wasn’t an entirely bad choice. Quitting kratom was an absolute nightmare though. Maybe it would have been easier to quit drinking without the help of kratom. Oh well, youthful folly.

I snorted heroin for 8 years. I got clean in 2019. I started taking kratom the week after I got clean. I just hit 5 years clean. Kratom saves lives point blank. You don't get high from it and it does help with anxiety. So coming from someone who is a 1 g a day heroin user to having the same amount of kratom everyday for 5 years. No more no less. Some days less if I'm honest it gets a very very bad rap and I wish people weren't just trying to stigmatize it to line their own pockets.

So you’re using it as MAT, which isn’t really the intended use of it. (Medicated Assisted Treatment, normally methadone or suboxone are used for this type of treatment). However, being 20 years, 6 months & 14 days clean, I’m not at all knocking how you’ve stayed clean. I’m glad it’s working for you. My main concern is the long term effects. I have personally witnessed people having terrible withdrawals from it, even worse than heroin. It took one person I know about 6 months just to sleep a solid 3-4 hours straight. I just don’t think it’s a good thing to have on the shelves as if it’s a vitamin supplement. It’s not regulated by the fda either I don’t think. It’s not super safe in that regard either. So it’s just very concerning to me having seen quitea lot of people battle addictions to Kratum and sadly, most are losing their battle. I know only one person who’s gotten clean from it out of the group. I also had to advise 4 different detox centers on how to treat withdrawals for kratum. Sadly, those who tried kratum to come off heroin or pain medications or even to come off of MAT, found once going to detox, they had to return to MAT (methadone or suboxone) while in detox. 98% of them continued on MAT after the detox period ran out & they were released. 100% of the patients/clients had to get insurance extensions to have extended time in detox due to the withdrawals being much worse than if they were detoxing from heroin, pain medications or even suboxone or methadone. Normal detox stay time for heroin & other opioids is an average of 5-7 days. The shortest stay we’ve had for kratom withdrawal treatment was 11 days & they still left feeling lousy but insurance kicked them out of detox prematurely (that makes me so angry). Lastly, 100% OF THEM HAD WORSE WITHDRAWALS from Kratom compared to heroin, pain medication, methadone/Suboxone withdrawals... That is of great concern to most of us as well. Kratom is not something you see often in detox facilities (although that’s slowly changing too). Most people/facilities do not how to treat it and people are suffering because of it. I just worry because it really shouldn’t be in gas stations for literally anyone to purchase. I understand why you are taking it and again please know from one person in recovery to another, I’m not in anyway knocking your process at all. Please know that. I’m so glad you’ve found a way to make it work for you, but you are a rarity when you pull back the curtain and review the entire picture and as one who has been working in this field for 18+ years the big picture is very concerning. That’s all I’m saying. I’m not saying it should be completely illegal. I just think it shouldn’t be easily accessible in gas stations either. I just wish there was a better way to go about this. It’s killing people and causing people to be sick for months on end and causing people to become addicted to it. So, it’s just scary. Watching people withdrawal from it…. I wouldn’t wish that on my worst enemy. It looks worse than heroin withdrawal to me & from what I saw with every single one of the patients I oversaw or helped facilitate care and proper medical treatment for withdrawals. I’m very scared about these high school and college kids thinking it can’t be that big of a deal to use because it’s sold in gas stations. So, again, I’m just concerned about how it’s being sold, the lack of regulation around it and so on. Idk what the right answer is not do I claim to. I’m just concerned for all the people I’ve seen addicted to it and to those I know who will become addicted due to how easily it can be purchased.

@@jessicas9789it absolutely sucks how easy it is to access via gas station or smoke shops. but, that doesn’t mean it shouldn’t be legal and accessible to responsible adults in the same way alcohol is. especially considering that alcohol is extremely addictive, and has far more dangerous withdrawals than opioids. if i had to guess, the people you saw having that hard of a time with WD’s were taking kratom extracts recreationally, which are far more powerful than plain powder. i only take powdered leaf to manage the symptoms of my illnesses, and it helps far more than any of the myriad of medications i’ve been put on in the past, with far less side effects. the extracts are another beast, but can be crucial to some people who are managing chronic pain. i agree they shouldn’t be in store fronts. but to make normal people with debilitating disorders unable to access them will just push them towards far more dangerous substances, whether that be from a doctor or the streets. keeping kratom legal is crucial, to fight the opioid epidemic, and to keep people like me, who are just trying to manage chronic conditions, healthy.

In June 2019, whilst in cocaine withdrawal, I watched that documentary “A Leaf of Faith.” My journey with Kratom began the very next day. Kratom shut that “I need one more snort, one more pill, one more escape” noise off in my brain. It allowed me to work on my whys of addiction. I have not been back to pain management in 5 years. I am a functioning member of society again. I am a thriving mother again. I am no longer a burden to my kids. I lived in Thailand for a year, and the house I rented had a convenience on the ground floor. Kratom was a big seller. I asked the owner why they sell it, and she said there wasn’t much choice because everyone wanted it. I’m sure there were kids that were using it, but I had a view where none of the customers could see me. A lot of cops, military, government and factory workers use it.

My dosage has stayed the same, no personal side effects any time I skip days. I get my kratom from the best source availed, batches are tested for impurities and its labeling HAS recommended dosing. If your doing 20 grams or more throughout your day it will cause problems if not addressed.

No wonder people enjoyed it as it made them feel good. I used tramadol in moderation for pain for years and it helped but now its nearly impossible to get legally since the FDA blacklisted it. I went to try kratom for withdraw and it does help a lot. The only thing i do not like is 3 or 4 capsules are needed for results and I don't think that can be good for the internal organs. Crazy thing is in Mexico and many other places most pain killers are legal to buy at reasonable prices at the pharmacy and with no prescriptions. Also there is not a big problem with abuse there. Here in the the US they want you to suffer or look for alternatives like kratom.

Here's the thing... if you take it like you should, the worst that'll happen is you'll feel good. If you start taking more and abusing it, you risk vomiting, getting the 'wobbles, and/or increasing your chance of having a seizure (even a break-through, meaning you've never had one before). Addiction is hit or miss. You'll find just as many that don't have any issues quitting as you find that do. Anything is large amounts is likely not going to be good for you. Regardless, know your source and be smart about it. If you do those two things, you'll be fine. I'm willing to bet at a few grams (at most) per day, it's safer than even drinking or smoking. 5:12. I'm sorry for your loss, but this claim is HIGHLY suspect... especially for those that have ever used this herb. The doctor is the same guy that would have told you Oxycontin was safe and non-habit for me

Kratom cannot be compared to OxyContin. That's like comparing caffeine and meth. I've used it for 4 years. I can say that it definitely has it's down sides. I wont deny that I'm addicted and that it's difficult to get off of. It's definitely still an addictive drug, and having a Kratom addiction can be a problem for a lot of people. But it's absolutely nothing like Oxy or any other opioid. It is nowhere near as dangerous or addictive. I would say, as far as addictiveness and danger is concerned, it falls somewhere between cannabis and alcohol. Not quite as safe as weed, definitely more addicting, but not as much as alcohol and nowhere near as dangerous.

I’m unfortunately also disappointed in this piece. For many reasons. Including: over-selling danger and fear as a part of this journalism, not talking about how many other widely available ‘gas station’ products are more harmful ie alcohol and drinking and driving, and that natural plants are (around the world and with many uses) something that has been used for thousands of years. How some of these points could have been missed is unfortunate. And I like the host, which makes this sadder that I have to type this.

Hope y'all don't ever have to detox from it. It's AWFUL. I have an addictive personality. I got addicted when I started taking them for migraines. $800 a month. That's 4x more expensive than the meds my neurologist put me on that Mostly controls the migraines. It wasn't worth it.

I have an addictive personality too, but $800 of kratom a month?! I've never used more than a $25 8 oz bag in a month.

I’ve been eating a few leafs everyday for my allergies for the last 2 years. It’s works wonders. It’s definitely not dangerous. At least to me. Much better than marijuana, in my opinion 🤔
