To put it in fighting terms: Kuminga needs more “situational sparring” time, working on specific drills to pressure test them but needs defenders that are physical, replicating game speed, but don’t know what he’s working on so it’s more authentic ie: can you score through contact in 3 dribbles or less or only score from the nail but your defender doesn’t know
"3 dribbles or less" this is the key, but in these videos, Kuminga is still dancing around and getting to the rim in about 5 or 6 dribbles. By that time, the team defense is set and ready to slide.
1:40. Switch the video to .25x speed and pause at his release point. The form, especially the off-hand, looks SUBSTANTIALLY better than before. He used to release that off-hand much earlier in the shot.
A lot of people is sleeping on Moody….its beyond disrespectful at this point. I bet he makes the biggest leap this year out of all the young players. Only person that can stop that is Kerr and he’s done a hell of a job so far to stunt Moody’s growth
@@patrickstubbs3792nobody sleeping on him, it’s just gonna be hard for him to play when there are so many guards in the team. Personally I’d have him as a regular rotation player but I’m not the gsw coach. That’s up to Kerr
@@alanarriaga6204 Kerr is going to lose the locker room if he refuses again to play Moody and starts benching JK and let Podz running wild this season. He is a disgruntle player away of being sacked. The FO cant be putting their trust on the young players and have the coach undermining them.
@@alanarriaga6204 I understand that but to me Moody is the best option out of all of those others you mentioned. He’s more complete as a 2 way player than them. Hield shoots it better but liability on defense, Melton can do both but is coming off an back injury, Podz is a defensive liability and isn’s quite the scorer 9pts, 6reb, & 4ast isn’t starting numbers at SG. Plus we need him to run the second unit. Waters I’m not sure what he brings but I know it’s his first year in Kerr system vs Moody’s 4th.
Key for JK is to develop a deadly mid-range that has to be respected, combined with the pump-fake. I worry that JK and everyone else puts too much focus on the 3.
You didn't watch him. Lol. The mid-range jumper is one of the main aspects of his game. I can say he should emphasize it even more. It will elongate his career.
naw these niggas dont get wha u sayin. ik wha u sayin and facts itd open up his game sm if they fear his middy not if he jus shoots it, the 3 ball is gonna come from being left open cuz they fear his drive n he'll knock it down
@@cyberftthe mid range is so much more open now because 1) there's far more space in the mid range 2) defenders don't guard the mid range the way they guard for the three and drives to the rim. The best wings are undoubtedly threats in the mid range: Booker, KD, Tatum, Derozan, PG, Kawhi..I can keep going especially if I include retired players
Steve Kerr's rotations are my biggest worry, not the personnel. I don't know how he's going to figure out lineups and minutes for Kuminga/Wiggins/Draymond when they log-jam those positions. No more 30+ lineups, no more starting lineup small-ball.
Alot of GSW fans grew really entitled and now act like we should always have a roster as stacked as the Steph, KD, Klay, Dray and Iggy roster. I'm pretty sure Kuminga will be a 25 ppg guy within 3 years
The Warriors run a motion offense. That means they pass the ball and move until they get the highest percentage shot. It's not my turn your turn Luka/Kyrie. Stop with these dumb 2nd option narratives
@@kevinmclain4080 well for one, 38% is actually still above average. Don't forget that the guys shooting above 40% are actually monsters. Secondly, I actually wouldn't say JK can't create his own space at all. He certainly can, but I would like to see him play more 3 where that becomes more easier for him.
@@kevinmclain4080I don’t think people are meaning “#2 option” like the 2nd read on a particular play, but rather a “2nd go to guy/decision maker who can get a bucket or be enough of a threat to demand a double team to create opportunities elsewhere.
I love JK's work ethic, his attitude, and his athleticism. The one thing I've never been sure of is his bball IQ -- if THAT takes a step, I think he can be a true #2 option.
Kid just needs minutes. He needs time to figure it out on the court. I think he has shown in the minutes he has played that he can play in this league and now he just needs more minutes and a defined role on the team. This is more on Kerr than JK. Same goes with Moody. Two really good prospects that have not been given amplel opportunity to succeed.
No, it's really on JK; make yourself too good for the bench. It's against Kerr's own interests to keep a guy out who's going to make the team better...unless you theorize that he has something personal against the kid. And we know he ain't that kinda guy.
Who's complaining? Simply stating facts and providing constructive criticism. Have you seen his videos? Most of them are with him playing against a traffic cone or chair. Relax. Chill. 🤣
@@Jonathan-mp3ju most nba players post the same kind of videos and wait wait to see how it looks in preseason or pro AM games. Guys like Ben Simmons and we know why that is.
How do you develop decision making in workouts?? That is something you develop by playing a lot of games. Workouts are for motion and physical readiness ,everything else is learnt on the job. Let the kid get his workout and dont judge him on 2 minutes clips
Kuminga and Moody are both shell-shocked and nervous playing for Kerr because his short hook on those two players. They can’t help but play tight and nervous. They feel they have to be PERFECT. They can’t play free. However, Podz can shoot someone on 5th Avenue and still play 30 minutes a game 😡. Complete double standards
I agree. The decision making in workouts is probably the most important. As a musician, you practice exercises and mechanics, which definitely translate, but the meat and potatoes is practicing the repertoire and simulating performance situations where you have to make professional decisions to smooth out inevitable flubs.
Good analogy. As a hooper/drummer I learned to learn new fills/moves slow and speed up as I got the feel of them. JK is getting a bigger bag this summer that he can plug and play with at full speed next season. Excited to see him develop into his potential
Nice points, but what I will say is that when I see a gifted 22 year old (21?) spending all summer, not at home base (The Bay), not in the DRC, but in a neutral country working out 3 times a day in an Olympic year, not hanging with all the players in the City, I feel pretty good. I dont even mind the hands off guarding hes facing at that nice pace, he needs alot of confidence to transition into a breadwinner for his team and it looks like hes getting it... that baseline fadeaway ( a la Klay) looks pretty nasty too.
He spent hiis 1st off season waiting for a visa to play for the DRC as I remember, did that Drew leage type game (I forget the name, ex player meet with GP2) lat year... Im just sorry hes not scrimmaging with Podz and TJD a little too.
Great analysis.....these things ppl don't realize about Kuminga he came in the league very raw, all the speed explosiveness agility don't mean much without handles and a reliable jumpshot
Talking about squaring your hips really reminds me of "horse stance" in yoga training which directly translates into the highest level of tennis. Look at the Olympic gold metal winner Novak when he hits a forehand - horse stance. His body weight is directly over his hips and not bending over. He's widely know as one of the best movers in the game of tennis ever. I feel like ball players should look that kind of balance to become proper defenders and shooters. So much of your core strength and movement comes from having your weight directly over your hips.
Kuminga will develop a great shot and is improving. I can see already you have to give it time to grow. Jump shot through the repetition in practice and over the summer will gradually improve his game in that area. Remember this you already have two great shooters on the roster already/mental can learn from/teaching
all I ask for is that Kerr just gives Kuminga 35-38mpg consistently regardless of whatever mistakes he makes on court. let him actually get a full 75-80 game season of this type of usage and we will know for sure if he is worth that max rookie extension.
It's the non Curry minutes, against good teams, that Kuminga has to prove himself, imo. Last season, there was some "meaningless" games towards the end, where Kerr didn't put Curry in at all, and Kuminga looked lost out there.
@@Gogetta2323 yeah I mean it's easy to quickly Google that and get your answer, but it doesn't truly Tell how Kuminga was playing. He scored 18 a game without Curry on the floor, but with a small sample of 8 games... You know Poole averaged 26pts 5 assists in 26 games during the 2022-2023 season(the season Poole was punched 😂), without Curry. That's the type of shoes Kuminga needs to fill, imo. I think Kuminga can surpass Poole, though.
Uncle Alch-I totally agree about the importance of Jonathan Kuminga’s handle. I really hope he’s working on that because you can have all the moves in the world, but you can’t handle the ball while you’re doing those moves-it’s not good. I really wish-and there may still be time-someone gets Jonathan to work with Steph Curry and accelerate basketball with all that crazy hand eye coordination stuff they do with the tennis balls flashing lights and all that. If Jonathan had a good handle and didn’t get his pocket picked so often-that alone would change his world for the better in terms of basketball.
I stopped giving these off-season workout videos any excitement until I see those techniques being ingrained in their games. Let's not forget westbrook would look like the next coming of Steph in these videos but when the going gets tough, would always revert to what he knows and feels comfortable with.
Yeah same . I seen Ben Simmons in off season workout vids and come game time … same old Ben … these videos aren’t going to show him making mistakes and learning . Let’s realize that lol it won’t look good . We all look for and need content to keep going .
JK's biggest obstacle to success is Steve Kerr's lineup decisions. He needs at least 30+ minutes/game. On the upside, with this being the year that the Warriors need to make a decision to pay him, there will be a lot of pressure from the front office to give Kuminga the run he needs.
@@AntGray13 I agree JK is not a 4 - Wiggins should be coming off the bench, and/or playing the 2 in spots. I also think that Draymond should only play the 5 situationally and is much more effective at the 4 so he doesn't get worn down dealing with the gauntlet of 7 footers.
Every damn video about Kuminga is negative and critical. I am SOOOOOO sick of this nonsense. I hope he's working on his free throws, cuz he will be on the line a lot and needs to get his average around 80-85%.
Well if he’s working on the wrong sht is that really benefiting him? He’s putting the work in but work on the right stuff that’s tailored for him. Criticism is needed to be great
People talk about Kuminga's midrange, but he also needs to improve his footwork. Anthony Edwards and Jalen Brunson have deadly footwork. They can get a high-percentage shoot at a stop through their footwork. Kuminga only has his turn-around jumper in these scenarios. If can also add that to his game, he will become deadly.
I feel like he will definitely be working on situational awareness and playstyle tweaking. Once he makes his way to Hawaii for the practice run with the warriors, i feel like they'll be able to help him, especially draymond and curry
When you want to understand how Jonathan Kuminga is developing himself look no further than Jaylen Brown of the Boston Celtics. Jaylen Brown has been on a similar trajectory and has shown what steps Kuminga needs to take not just to become an elite level player in the NBA but also a maximum salary talent in the NBA.
I'd like to see him model his game after Jordan's high post, mid-range base. It's counter a little to what works in today's NBA but Kuminga has the right physical gifts for it. Durant played a lot of high post with the Warriors.
I think the W's need to just absolutely know if he truly is a player that can be built around or another trade piece. Give him the touches and in game reps with only a caveat of deferring to Steph during crunch and his hot streaks record be damned...especially during the first portions of the season. If he can be a 22-25 PPG primary scorer while being the focal point, 2nd option on this team with a competitive to winning record, then we know he's a building piece.
The thing that's got me excited about the footage is his handling. Kuminga has had a few turnovers last season cause he's had loose handles. If he's improved his shooting a little and made his handles tighter I'd be happy with that version of kuminga.
Hey Alch good video as usual u think going all in on Brandon Ingram plus herb jones for kuminga wigs plus gp2 for salary plus picks would be a good trade? Or just give everything for booker 😂
We have to see if he can improve the 3pts shoot. If he improved that, he will be a headache for all the team. Because with a better three point percentage now defender have to get closer to him and that give him the advantage to use his explosive first step.
Kuminga was the 3rd highest scorer on the team last year averaging 53% from within the 3 pt arc. He averaged 16 pts per game on 26 minutes per game. Only Steph and Klay were better and even Klay only shot 43%. There are so many players on Warriors roster not pulling their salary. Kerr doesn’t set up plays for Kuminga. Kuminga gets his own baskets with little help.
I get what you mean, I felt the same when I watched the workouts. Not the type of the things the team is looking for. A little too much dribbling, worried more about the bag than the impact. But it’s still exciting nonetheless.
i still think and hope JK is developing some short roll, passing skills. We'll need his pick n'roll with steph and could be a deadly combo, something like we saw in the team USA with LeBron. Both Steph and Kuminga needs to get the double team and for him to be able to identify the right passes to do will unlock a different offense for us.
Some things a player can count on and Kuminga has had this all along. It’s good to practice and stay on but what I want to see most from Kuminga is that head a threat to score and pass in the half court. That’s why teams like Podz so much. He has the ball and all 4 other players are a factor. Kuminga has to drive and see the rest of the floor and show he can hit the open man after he draws a defender. When he does this things will open up for him, the team and his wallet.
Kuminga is already more athletic than 95% of the players in the league. With all the work he is putting in it will make him more dangerous and he is improving his shot. No doubt there are ways he could improve on his training but I believe he is going to be a better 3 point shooter this coming season and he will be even more explosive than he already is. The best players work out hard in the off season and he is showing he is one of those type of players. Go Kuminga. Thank you for putting in the time and effort and not coming into training camp 20 pounds over weight with a beer belly.
Kuminga is training like he's a guard. He needs to simplify his moves he's too big to be doing hang hesitation dribbles. He needs to work on his blow by and when he gets cut off just stop and hit the mid range. Also work on his mental and counter moves.
He’s working on things he doesn’t have in his bag…no one can stay in front of him they either too slow and blow by them or too small and dunk on em…we all seen him ball out when he got the minutes…it’s about fine tuning his gsme
@@Hopper830 exactly…he’s too athletic to be playin the 4 imo…also too small…he’s fast enough to guessed 1-3 but big enough to guard 4’s but that’s jot ideal just like Dray guiding 5’s…too much wear tans tear on their bodies
Hopefully he makes a jump. Curry needs another dominant offensive player. Kuminga has the talent to be a great two way. He just needs the dawg to come out
The intangilbles are what matter with players like Kuminga. Can he guard the best perimeter player on the opposing team? If he can then his value will go up. If it's only about shots that's ok don't get me wrong but defense when you play the 3 and the 4 is very important. Shooting at least 75% free throws, shooting 36% from 3, shooting above 55% from the field, guarding best perimeter player, rebounding, are just some very basic things he needs if wants big money moving forward because he will be guarded as a number 2 option not as an unknown dude who we leave open to do his thing.
Looking at these Insta Vids, I get the impression hes doing too much. Bruce Lee: "I fear the man that has practiced 1 thing 10,000 times, not practiced 10,000 different things 1 time." Kuminga needs to lean into practicing his strenghts that compliment his Tendencies and Athleticism.
Aaaargh. Jordan and Kawai are two of the greatest players to ever play. Both of them have huge hands and both have a fierceness about them that Jonathan will never have. Jonathan is doing well. Kerr told Jonathan what to work on and we should assume that his trainers are not working against the team's wishes. If so it may be the team's fault. The Dubs should be trading Steph and Dray now while they are healthy and can bring back a haul of assets. Both will depreciate very quickly when the fall-off comes. If JK is demanding too much $, trade him for assets as well. Make a strong decision for the long term health of the franchise. They are not likely to do that. More likely to follow the Bulls and the Lakers and muddle through.
We just need enough to carry a healthy Chef to the conference finals, then let Curry win us that 5th ring...i trust that JK, Podz, Moody and TJD can do it
I think the person he hiered to edit the video just put the fancy stuff im sure hes working on simple basic fundamentals u can tell when he shots his mid range hes on balance its smooth not alot of dribbling
Kerr has to switch gears this year. For the Warriors to go anywhere, they must shift to playing Podz, Moody, JK, and Davis together for consistent large minutes. If they neglect these players again, the Warriors are going nowhere.
Alch I just sent you message on the gram. It nearly mirrors everything you said. Kuminga isnt a very fluid athlete and all the moves her working on are stiff. Id say he needs a ton of run, no dunks/layups allowed. I love the idea of multiple defenders too different sizes, strength, etc.
Honestly, Demar might be a better comp/ someone for JK to emulate right now as a player. He’s a bit more stiff but the same nuclear athlete that Demar was. I asked you about that pump fake disappearance on Patreon last season and if you think about it, JK threw away his greatest weapon and it’s one that gets Demar anything he wants from a defender.
Demar is a good blue print as well, like you said I think his movement pattern's are more stiff and similar to Kawhi's... Demar is a much more natural shooter, but no reason he cant learn the foot work
I like JK and I like that we're giving the opportunity to grow but I don't think he's a 224m max player, and I think GSW will be cautious here cause we saw what happened when JP got paid (overpaid)
jk needs to rep and rep on the pumpake and the midrange too many youngers players even the nba get away from the 20 percent of their playstyle and working flashy for the highlights instad of working on conatct dribbling getting to your spots
Haha how are we tripping on workout videos lol he not showing us everything I’m glad he working he looks better his shot looks better he looks more loose granted it’s practice and we not gon see the bad things but i think we in good hands with him i got him being most improved and scoring 22-25 ppg this year Kuminga coming out season starts now!!
@@Hopper830 I think we need Wiggins to defend the perimeter. If JK can improve on rebounding and defense, he'll be like a healthy Kawaii. His offense right now is good enough. I'd say that JK's most developed skill is his offense right now
Kwahi is great, but his advantage over all players is that defenders only see him every 7 weeks because he never plays. Q. How do you learn to write? Do you start writing scribble while taking dictation, or slowly one block letter at a time. JK doesn't need any more pressure on his shoulders than he already has. Peace.
As much as I'd like to see JK become a knockdown shooter, I'm not sure that's really what we need him to be. If he looked for his jump shot more he'd probably develop into something like Carmelo, elite at scoring the ball but we'd have to change our whole offense to revolve around him and as long as Steph is on the team that ain't gonna happen. Probably better for him to model his game after Giannis, a post up threat in the half court and completely unstoppable on a fast break especially with Draymond setting him up and Steph and Buddy lurking in the corners. I'd like to see him work on handles, eurostep, hook shot and fade away.
He is 6'7. He is not that big. Size wise he is a 3 so he should be shooting much better in the current NBA. That's why it is an issue for Kerr to put him in the starting 5. I think he mentioned it in the past too. Just too many guys love to hate on Kerr it is a trend for the weak.
I didn’t see any improvement. But he’s got a lot better by playing heavy minutes last year just a bit late. Empirically we know instagram showcase means nothing and can sometimes backfire 😂
He BETTER get a 3 point shot, lock down defender AND put up 24 points, 8 rebounds, 1.5 blocks and a couple of steals consistently. Steph needs a reliable second star. So if you want that money, you better know there's a lot of pressure.
@@JC91284 I agree his set point is funky and so his pick up isn’t smooth.. he will never be a guy like PG or young BMiller who can get into a pull up naturally and easy
@@AthleticAlchemy yeah cause when you brought Kwahi I started thinking like if his form was different or like you said his set point was more smoother he could be a more athletic Kwahi. But with that being said do you think his game has reached its ceiling?
Luminga never had a problem looking good in workout videos or showing off his dunk package. He has a problem when smart defenders with a pulse try and stop him in real games.
@myyololand outside of transition buckets he doesn't create any of those 0-3 foot shots. Outside of 3 feet he shoots 38%. And his FG% wasn't 58%. Quit lying or being ignorant.
