Algae will form in a matter of days in a brand new container of water left out in direct sunlight.. without plants or fish in the container.. so glad to hear you tell aquarium keepers not to panic over a natural process in nature… Will

I tried everything to get rid of algae, I watched an old Co-op video where you recommended adding more Easy Green. I tried it, it worked. It made my intentional plants healthy enough to out compete the algae.

It sounds like a sale pitch. But more happy plants from fertilizers is the answer half the time.

Finally made it to the retail store since I was in the area the other day. It was like seeing the roots of my fishkeeping hobby - very cool experience. Very polite staff and immaculate tanks. Right on point with the brand and what Aquarium Co-Op preaches. Being able to buy an Enjoy Nature Daily mug to take home was icing on the cake.

I have worked at a tree, perennials, and shrub nursery for the past 20 years. part of the reason that plants want different nutrients when you move them is because in their original position, they shared their root structure with the other plants around them, and they draw from each each other for various nutrients; and when you replant a plant it has to do that all by itself until it grows its root structure into the other existing plants. also, at work, we always tell people when they have weeds in their grass to fertilize the lawn, because grass is the most pervasive weed that exists. Fertilizing your grass will actually push all the weeds out. PS, u r a genius.. coming from a 9 months aquarist😄 I just love how you’re breaking down things that assimilate to my understanding of planting terrestrial plants

This is great info! I personally don't stress about algae and it eventually sorts itself out, but i feel for the folks who are battling it as a problem. I recently had to downsize aquariums, but best believe I'm going to support the coop via merch 😊

I consider it a defense that buys me time to figure out my tank and fix the problem as opposed to my tank crashing. Same with duckweed. Consider them to be mopping up excess nutrients.

would love to catch a live some day😊 I put my aquarium in a picture window so needless to say I have a bit of algae, even though I have plants. The white magic eraser and a gravel vac is my solution. Lasts a few weeks and then I do it again. I get very minor growth. Love the siesta Idea but am too lazy to put the window quilt down every day😄. I love the bamboo idea. I already have some growing in a soapdish, but pushing it down a little bit as it grows?great tip! Love the concept of companion planting. I actually do that in my garden, but had never really thought about it in the aquarium; but colloquially speaking, I did notice my aquarium el nino fern prefers to be surrounded by plants and dislikes being overshadowed on top. everybody wants to buy big plants, but I never do because I know better lol. from my perspective, you only buy big plants when the plant or tree (or whatever you’re buying) takes an incredibly long time to grow. honestly, you really have to understand how root systems work together in order to recognize that a big plant requires things that an aquarium probably can’t provide, unless the aquarium is very established. now, if you’re buying a peach tree, you’re looking for the size of the trunk; but when you buy it, you’re still gonna cut off all the top growth, if you want it to get established quickly. when you think of this on a small scale, there’s no benefit, because you’re still supposed to trim it back.

Hi Cory! I plan on purchasing your lights & timers, but all I have now is piano lights over aquarium for my plants. They have high/low white & amber. I can only run them for one hour two times a day. I also had to use a different smaller light in my office because the ceiling light is too much. I can't wait until I get your lights & timers. Thanks for all you do. ❤

Interestingly enough since you mentioned the magic eraser there was a study that was just released that shows that magic erasers shed high level of microplastics. Not sure how this affects us in the aquarium hobby but interesting.

It does seem like it shreds easier than a regular sponge. Maybe just use them once or twice and then toss them?

How do floating plants add into the mix? I just noticed this morning my 40 gal (with shrimp and some mystery snails) looks like it had an algae bloom. I added more easy green hoping that will help. My light is on a timer. I haven’t had this issue until I added the salvinia which has also multiplied quickly. Great video!

Catching this on replay. Thank you so much for two hiurs of plant talk! I really enjoyed this video and learned some things I needed. I wish someone woukd have asked about black bear algae. It is covering my aquarium co-op sponge filter and starting to appear on the sand substrate. I wonder if I can spray hydrogen peroxide on the sponge filter, wait five minutes, rinse well and return to tank or not?

I've done it. I'd say take it very light on feeding for a few days.

I'm often wondered if CEC really matters in an aquarium. It's a measure based on work done with terrestrial soils, but aquariums are closed systems where the substrate isn't particularly deep and there's no water runoff like there is on land.

Hard to say, this is why I say in my fish room science. It doesn't really matter what happens out in the real world if the effects are different in your fish tank.

I've used the Hydrogen Peroxide tip for BBA on my crinums. It killed the algae but the crinum only grows straight now...no twists. Any ideas why?
