If you don't have the skills to respond to a false alarm or handle the fight-or-flight response, it's harder to reduce anxiety and overcome phobias.
The part of our brain that triggers panic is not the rationale part of our brain. So, we have to have the courage to face what we're afraid of-which can be hard to do on your own.
Dr. Elizabeth McMahon shares how virtual reality therapy can help treat anxiety.

I’ve had bad anxiety and agoraphobia and I can’t understand why I can’t cross the road. Does anybody have any idea why I act like this, it’s like I’m afraid of the pavement or cars. And going to places like the post office is a pain for me too.

I know how you feel. Maybe this will help. About 10 years ago, I had my first panic attack at home, then on the bus and at the school center. At the time I didn't know what they were, but only later did I realize that I'm afraid of situations where I think I'm chained and where I can't decide for myself what to do. I'm always looking for a backup plan if things go wrong. What I learned about this fear is that it is survival mechanism inside me. But it activates in exactly the wrong situation. That's when I started thinking about the reasons for my fears, because the stressful situations kept coming. Even today, I don't fully understand my fear and its roots, but what I do know is that, fear can't hurt you, you can't die because of fear. There is exactly one thing that fear can do for you, and that is to teach you to listen to yourself. it teaches you to develop yourself and, above all, to know yourself inside and out. Anxiety disorder is not just a disorder, it is the mind's way of telling you that you need a change. Try to see something positive in distressing things, shape them in your mind. If you are afraid of Clowns, Imagine a situation where you are about to get hit by a wheel, but a clown manages to save you, Imagine the words in your mind. In this way, you teach your brain that not all stressful things are bad. Being in a car can be awkward and stressful when you can't move and you're strapped into seat belts. Thought (I can't move, I hope this journey ends soon. I can't take it anymore." Changed thought "Oh, wonderful scenery, luckily you don't have to walk. The beauty of being in a car is that you can see a lot in a short time, and I get to travel with my family or friends." After that tough, relax your muscle and your mind will follow. Enjoy little things and member to walk slow, then you can Enjoy everyhing at it fullness.

Im not sure if this helps or not. But you are not alone. I have same issue of being afraid from open spaces because I feel unsafe, instead of walking in open spaces I tend to hug walls and keep walking on sides of everything to feel safe. My worst nightmare is to encounter someone I know and he starts talking to me in an open space. I feel dizzy and lose sense of everything around me and reality. I have found that there certain things that I do helps my case. 1- Getting familiar with the place (exposing yourself to the dragon, by noticing him, smelling, touching, then befriending him) as if you are testing waters. 2- I found that exercise helps a lot. Force yourself to train to lower cortisol to reduce your overall stress levels and maintain energy. 4- Minimize but not eliminate things like caffeine in take, and other things that contribute. 3- Be honest with the world and proud of what you are going through. 4- Dont get addicted to anxiety, we are supposed to imagine a positive outcome of every scenario. Lets not give up! Remember you are not alone. I'm like you and I am sure there are others like us.🙏🏼

@Chill Finds Reduce intrusive thoughts to feel relaxed. Be careful what you feed your mind. Avoid comparing yourself with others, reduce watching negative social media and avoid constipation as it affects the mind. Your breathing is closely related to the brain [mind] and gives relief from stress-anxiety. For a relaxed mind observe the sensations of your natural incoming--outgoing breath at the entrance of the nostrils for 10-15 minutes or more. You can sit or lay down--eyes closed--No deep breathing. Don’t fight your thoughts. Never meditate with expectations. Make it a habit to observe your breath day and night before sleep, at work, when travelling, walking etc with eyes open or closed. Best wishes--Counsellor.
