A little ode to one of my favourite works and my favourite poet, Rainer Maria Rilke - if you've read anything from Rilke I would be deeply interested in hearing how it affected you in the comments. Please enjoy this little tour through these 10 beautiful letters. Also many, many thanks to a kindred spirit in Sweden for the gorgeous footage of the places where Rilke walked and worked.

i have been a rilke stan since i was 13 and he’s by far my favorite poet of all time, to the point where i got a tattoo similar to this >> on my 18th birthday this year to symbolize his quote, “the purpose of life is to be defeated by greater and greater things,” on the outside of my wrist. his work makes me feel alive, makes me feel whole, and makes me feel safe. in my eyes, nobody else compares to him and his way with words and expression. we also share the same middle name 😉

The other day I began to read 'The Picture Of Dorian Grey' and I had tears in my ears in the beginning pages itself not only because I felt everything that was going on in me was expressed so beautifully but also that someone else felt the same way. I was having a not so great day and felt alone. The moment you began narrating Rilke's letters, I felt seen again and comforted just like when I was reading Oscar Wilde's book. I keep thinking, look at these people (Leonardo Da Vinci, Shakespeare and more). We have a distance of centuries between us yet they feel the closest in terms of emotional companions. P. S. I have a good mind to start reading Rilke's work soon Emma. I was already a fan since you narrated the snippet that's on one of your coffee mugs.

I read Letters to a Young Poet very recently, and it was life-changing. It was as if as I was reading, Rilke was responding to all the questions going through my head. If once sentence said something and I was thinking "but what..." the next sentence would be "of course you could say..., but..." it was almost as if I was Kappus haha. Overall, I think the single thing this book taught me is that it's ok to do what you love in solitude, and not have a whole community based on that thing that are only going to offer criticism and competition. And that only having questions, not answers, is ok. I'm so glad you made this video! 🤍

This video is beautiful! I totally agree with everyone saying this is like a BBC documentary! I didn't enjoy Letters to a Young poet as much as most people do, but some of his sentiments are really moving and his language is especially beautiful. I love the idea of turning inward, not letting your creations be deemed as worthy by others. But his stance on solitude and on love seemed idealistic. Solitude and time in nature is a privilege at times, although I wish it weren't. Obviously I wasn't the target audience of these letters, so my qualms are all personal. I wish it were possible to read Kappus' letters, because I think I would have enjoyed the work more if I were able to take on the point of view of the intended recipient better. This work did convince me to read more Rilke, though!

Solitude allows us to fully grasp our own particular uniqueness and place to blossom and fulfill our potential as creative forces.Art is the fullest expression of these forces and is indeed independent of arbitrary or limiting judgements.Love is the appreciation and joyous acceptance of the self or another in its totality❤️❤️❤️❤️

I love Rilke, and I'm beyond excited to find others who share the same passion for him! I was introduced to Rilke through a Japanese novel called The Wind Has Risen (Studio Ghibli's "The Wind Rises" is loosely based on this novel) by Tatsuo Hori, in which the protagonist reads Rilke's "Requiem for a Friend" in the last chapter. Reading that novel in my teen years, I was deeply moved by Rilke's words quoted in it. I've been repeatedly reading his poems, Letters to a Young Poet, as well as Stories of God ever since, especially when I feel alone. Rilke has taught me many things, and among them, I am especially grateful for his teaching me that solitude doesn't have to be a bad thing. Being a musician (Pianist and composer), I spend much of my time alone, and it is easy to feel lonely, but Rilke has taught me that the one who decides whether aloneness would be hopeless loneliness or blessed solitude is myself. Rilke, to me, has become the "innocent mind,/ Whose words are images of thoughts refin'd," as Keats would say:)

Yes, excellent writing and a superb video. I'm an old fogey, i'm very impressed with you and have so much to learn from you. I would doff my hat if i had one. I bow instead. I am into poetry (and world cinema) more than novels. Rilke is among the very greatest. Oh and i enjoy haiku- the classic ones and writing them myself. But i digress. RAINER MARIA RILKE: THIS IS THE CREATURE This is the creature that has never been. They never knew it, and yet none the less entirely loved it, from its suppleness to the very light of the eyes, mild and serene. It never was. And yet their love supplied the need of being. They always left a space. And in that clear space they had set aside it lightly raised its head and felt no trace of not being real. They fed it not with corn, but with the possibility that it might, somewhere, exist. They were able to confer such strength, its forehead grew a horn. One horn. It came up to a virgin once, all white - and lived on in the mirror and in her. (translation) RAINER MARIA RILKE: EVENING Slowly now the evening changes his garments held for him by a rim of ancient trees; you gaze: and the landscape divides and leaves you, one sinking and one rising toward the sky. And you are left, to none belonging wholly, not so dark as a silent house, nor quite so surely pledged unto eternity as that which grows to star and climbs the night. To you is left (unspeakably confused) your life, gigantic, ripening, full of fears, so that it, now hemmed in, now grasping all, is changed in you by turns to stone and stars. (translation)
