I don't think there's a better bass player today he "slaps" it and you don't see many bass guitar players do that.now

This has always been one of my favorite songs, and the quality of the video is on par with the song itself. I always found it interesting how it fakes you out into thinking it's going to be the singer lip syncing to the lyrics when you realize that its really an uncontrolled emotional outburst. The rest of the members of the band are dating the same woman and the singer is the clown. I think that the woman represents every man's 'ideal woman' and the clown is that part of men that we're afraid is going to come out -- waiting to and wanting to come out -- and ruin everything. I mean just look at when things turn around and disaster is avoided when the couple makes up -- how ANGRY the clown looks! At the end, Mark King (the singer) passes by that same woman which indicates to me that the cycle is about to repeat itself; and the clown who's inside of him is just waiting to come out and ruin everything. (Incidentally, this version is not the original video but a fan remix.)

That's a really interesting take on the story in the video. It think you're probably pretty accurate to the depth of it. The fact that the band named itself with a refernce to the Douglas Adams book series starting with Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy speaks.tomsomeonenim the bamd beinga thinker and contemplter. 42 being the answer to "Life the Universe and Everything"....which my guess would be was revealed in that book of the series. Also, I bet Mark King's a guy who really knows where his towel is. 😂

Best analogy..instrumentation and vocals were actually made in the studio. Now they can make instruments and vocals with a computer. Nothing beats music and artists before the 2000s

And it sounded equally as good live, if not even better live. The first time I saw them was 1985.

A few reactors are finding this gem of a band. You need to react to them live. One of those bands that do it on stage better than any recording

Yes you said it, back then these were some of the best musicians. They played this live, no sequencing raw musicianship. level 42 is second to none when it comes to songwriting and production

This version was some sort of remix of the original song. Check out the original music video. The video is the same as this one, but has some super creepy laughing vocalization sound effects towards the end.

From the same album, try "Good Man In a Storm". PS: the scary guy, Mark King, is one of the best jazz/pop bassists ever.

I recently went to see them live in Hastings UK they are much older yet so tallented , A bit of trivia ,they took their name "Level 42" from the book the hitchhiker's guide to the galaxy,at the end of the book the most unanswered question of life the universe and everything ...is 42 (mark king just loved the simplicity so he named the band Level 42) ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-5ZLtcTZP2js.html also take a look at level 42 "its over " amazing lyrics

When I was 18 (1989 or so), I worked at Ross Dress for Less in Huntington Beach and this song was on the store music loop and played like 15 times per shift. Didn't like the song back then but it has aged well. It soothes as it penetrates to the core.

LEVEL 42 also has another great tune that you have to check out. "Running in the Family." The lyrics are so cool. "Family" is my favorite of this band, and check out the photo of the lead singer, Mark King. What a cool, English face. Which reminds me of another English band, a SKA band, that you would enjoy: The band called MADNESS and their tune: "Our House." (For the best audio and official video, start at the 30 second mark of this video version: "Madness - Our House (Official 4K Video)." The band added an extra part in the beginning that showed them later in life that's kind of distracting. And I just subscribed. Peace!

Aside from rating the kick-ass song, I never hear reviewers talk about the story in this mondo bizarro video. A stressed-out guy boards a commuter train & desperately asks the guy next to him for a cigarette. No, so he starts to fixate on his bandmates-er-fellow passengers seated across from him; wondering if any was the type to steal his woman. The first guy, an artist, obviously feels disrespected by her (haha, doomed to fail). The second guy with the fancy sportscar, obviously disrespects her (our clown hero is overjoyed). But the third guy, the Black classical musician, appears to be a sensitive, good fit. Our guy obsessively sees himself as being clowned by her. As his paranoid fantasies get wilder, he starts to imagine each of the 3 men succeeding in stealing her from him, and he goes crazy-clown trying to disrupt the "romances" in his mind. At the end when he gets off the train, we see that "his woman" is just a London Tube (subway) hooker who he & his clown self built a whole fantasy world around. Does this guy have a wife and children??!!! Brilliant. Tragic. They don't make videos with this much thought anymore.
