Susan I think I might have mentioned this in the past but, gosh, you are such a pro. The production value of your videos is unbelievable. I wouldn’t be surprised if they get picked up by a music education system. I wanted to mention in passing: there’s a technical exercise by Franz Liszt called “Chords in Scales”. I resisted it at first but I have to admit that incorporating it into my technical work has dramatically improved my sight reading of almost all chordal variations. You’re the best! 😊

Thank you so much! That would be a dream to be able to work with a music education system. And for some reason, I didn't know about the Liszt exercises you mentioned. I'll check them out!

Susan this is so awesome!! I thought I was doing all the things (clumping, looking ahead, etc) and this has shown I AM! Most of your tips are things I did, and I've so far been able to sight read with you at tempo for beginner and late beginner. This was a really fantastic proof of progress for me that I couldn't really measure on my own! I knew I had progress in sight reading the last few months, but now I can actually see it! I'm interested to see how Intermediate goes for me 🤣 And since I was able to measure my progress already doing what you mentioned for months (years maybe haha) - people new to sight reading will definitely improve if they follow your tips!

Try John Kember's Piano Sight reading book series. It is the perfect method using the easiest patterns of gradual changes in notes. It works like magic. The key is to start with the easiest possible practice.

I started self learning piano about 9 month ago (all with RU-vid "flowing" notes) and today playing whole series pretty nice pieces... Definitely MUST starting sight reading practice / learning. Finished music school in kids ages but remember notes and most details linked ... Is your learning theory maybe good for me, OR still I must to practice read and play some elementary notes and then join your school? Thank you and Happy New Year.

Hello! If you're talking about the Faber Follow-Along Piano Course, it sounds like it could be a perfect fit since you'll be able to review what you learned as a kid, but also learn theory and new pieces as well. Check it out here! www.PianoRoadmap.com And if you have any other questions, feel free to email me: pianoroadmap@gmail.com

Your videos are so helpful! Because you mentioned the Chopin Prelude in A major: Could you tell me how you pedal it? The notes say the upbeat is without pedal, do you ignore that or play the upbeat without pedal?

After playing a simple piece a hundred times or so it begins to be memorized. Should I stop and slow it down and read the actual notes like saying the name of the notes before playing it? It seems once I memorize the piece I’m not reading it anymore.

My best advice for improving sight reading apart from this video would not be focusing on the notes of a piece you already know, but to be trying to learn an “easy” piece every day. Apart from your standard repertoire, take like 1 or 2 pieces everyday from children’s piano books or something and learn it. Spend like 15 min each day doing that and after a while you will see the difference. Sight reading can only be improved through experience!

If you're deep-diving into a piece with the intention of being able to play it well, then yes, it will become memorized. No need to slow it down to read the actual notes anymore. ALTHOUGH, it's very beneficial to slowly play it through once in a while (maybe once a week) WHILE READING the notes. This is to make sure that you're not "making anything up" by accident or memorized something wrong.

Me too. And I've been playing for many years, but not reading well. I figured out she is being very clever about hand position. The real problem, for me, is not know where the keys are that are shown in the music. Please, Pianoroadmap, exercises on how to know where the keys are. That would really help. Help with touch keys and where they are.
