Last year lewy would have won it by a great margin. But this year, looking at all the stats it seems that both of them deserved it equally and the result is expected with one of them winning by a small margin. The reason many people are saying Messi doesn't deserve it is because Messi is yet to perform well in psg in recent months. This perception is due to recency bias. Once you see his overall performance throughout the year it will be clear that he had a fairly strong case for winning ballon d'Or this year. Nevertheless I would be happier if lewy won it. I look at it this way:- From Jan to July Messi deserved it undeniably, right after winning Copa. But his form dropped drastically with the new season, Lewandowski was more consistent throughout while Messi had the best individual tournament amongst any players in the world. I would in the end give it to Lewandowski especially considering that he didn't get one for last year which was just outright ridiculous, but those two were definitely ahead of everyone else this year.

The good part is that, there is next year, and the other year, let's hope this players careers will still be booming, so they can still prove themselves to the world.
