Hi all! I hope you liked the video. I have since listened to the studio recording again. While I can hear a similar vibrato it sounds to me like they drastically reduced it in post. It becomes much less distracting to me at that level. Also I hope you consider joining my Discord even if you don't become a full Patron ! Lots of amazing, supportive people.

When he originally released this song, he sang it in a much higher key, and, while it sounded amazing - so emotionally raw and powerful - it ended up wrecking his throat to the point where he had to stop singing for a while to help it recover. And ever since then, he's only ever sung it live in this much lower key. I miss the old version, and I wish there was some way a voice tutor could teach him to sing in that higher key in a safe, comfortable way, but maybe there just isn't one.

Pablo Sniper not trying to disrespect u or anything but him forcing the vibrato and doing it well whether u like the sound or execution or not doesn't matter as people want to hear him sing not either of u. Don't want that to come across harsh but I find it strange when people criticise technique when them doing it the "correct" way doesn't even get them half the success or unique sound as the one they criticise

Jessie B yes I know and I wasn't trying to be rude or offensive or anything but my point was that there really is no way to sing "correct". If everyone sang the same withe the same "correct" techniques then they'd all be boring and no one would listen to them. Like for example if Sam sings all the notes perfectly and has perfect technique I'd still listen to Lewis instead. I'd take unique singers who can make and technique (right or wrong) sound enjoyable and good over someone that keeps his jaw still while singing any day of the week. That's part of his sound that's why people like him. Don't know if I explained that good but again I mean no disrespect I'm just stating my opinion

Dear Sam Johnson, you know what you are talking about and are no doubt an excellent voice coach. For the vast majority of budding singers. But here we are dealing with an exception to the rule, an idiosyncratic character/singer whose technical 'mistakes' are actually adding to the authenticity appeal of the 'ordinary guy' singing for ordinary people. Much of this at a subconscious level. As you say, audiences love it. And they love him.

Hey definitely strong scottish accent but I think the jaw might be nerves/trying to control nerves. Good vid!
@u_idiotkid425

It might be nerves or just his stylistic choice. He has been known to get panic attacks. He had to end a show early once because he was having a panic attack on stage.

You can tell you are a vocal coach, am guessing you have students on Broadway. I am British and love that we have such a variety to our dialects, some sound beautiful when singing, scottish like Lewis and the Welsh are gorgeous to me.

This poor lad was struggling with a cold and I also think he was jet-legged so he was not feeling his best throughout this performance and simply just trying to get it done. They even lowered the key to try and make it a bit easier for him to do without him having to strain as much.

If he can transition from chest voice to falsetto smoothly, there is no reason he couldn't do that with his vibrato. I think the jaw thing is a really bad habit and he doesn't need it.

Hey Sam! I love your videos and always appreciate your thoughts and opinions. I always learn a lot. I am just wondering, how do you change that jaw thing? When I sing and produce my vibrato, I feel like I do the same thing as Lewis and I didn’t realise you can use vibrato without having your chin/jaw move like that! I always hated that my jaw moves like that! But I am glad to know that there is a way to change it! I would really appreciate you getting back to me 😊

Ygor Cortes but who cares if he’s faking vibrato or not?! 🤷🏽‍♀️I don’t get it
@YgorCortes
@YgorCortes 4 года назад
@@glcnornes3783 because it's worse for keeping control of your voice, making your technique much less consistent, and it sounds weird.
@glcnornes3783

Ygor Cortes the first part of what you said may be true, but he’s been able to consistently pull it off (for now) in his songs... so perhaps he will learn later on. The second part of what you say is purely subjective, as there will be equal parts (give or take) of those that like that or not... I’m one of those that don’t think it sounds weird at all, I quite like the sound.
@YgorCortes
@YgorCortes 4 года назад
@@glcnornes3783 I'd be much more okay with it if it was a healthy technique, but unfortunately in reality it's a limiting workaround. Let's hope he learns how to do it the "right" way so that he has different options to play with 😄

Id love to hear your take on Billie Eilish performing All The Good Girls Go To Hell live on the Howard Stern Show. It would be awesome to hear your take on her technique and the style she approaches the song in. Absolutely love your videos, and its awesome to hear your take on different singers from pretty much a completely unbiased view point

He is the most Scottish of Scottish I have ever heard. I grew up in the town next to him and have a similar thick Scottish accent. I have seen him live before, and the jaw thing isn't normal, he did have to cancel shows after Ellen show, and he was sick. Man, he can sing like that live you should have heard him at Trnsmt in Glasgow. He was epic. I have seen people comment on his pronounciation, "chu" that links without and you, is a very Scottish thing and something I catch myself doing. I work in a fairly international department at work and have had several people not understand my accent sometimes.

I was really interested and hoping you would review this one because I wanted to see what you thought of the jaw thing. I think it's choice though on his part.... but it always feels unsustainable when I hear it.. If it's just taste, is it just that you don't like it? or do you feel like it's genuinely just too much bad technique?

The glass has shattered and now I can't stop seeing the turkey. 🤭 I love it when singers sing with their accent though, like Dermot Kennedy does as well. As always so interesting to hear what you have to say, I'm not a singer but through your videos I've gotten a new appreciation for those who are.
