Contrast that humility with Warrior, who was always triggered and defensive and changed the subject when working was brought up. Lugar was a good hand.
@@fmthebaron That always cracked me up about Luger. A comparably "loud" wrestler would be the Barbarian, which to me always made sense as the Barbarian was supposed to be a savage/neanderthal type power wrestler, so for him to go "ARRGGHH" whenever delivering or taking a big move fit his character. Didn't make as much sense with Luger to be so loud as he depicted an arrogant/high-strung heel or a clean-cut babyface (i.e. not some kind of half-beast character like the Barbarian...)
My buddy and I met him when we were at a gas station just outside of Disney World back in '96 or '97. WCW used to film out of MGM Studios for a short time and he was filling his car up after one of the shows (I presume). I said hi and he seemed a little hesitant to talk at first but when we didn't act all fanboy and I went back to filling up my car, his demeanor change and he came over and had a short conversation with us. Really really nice guy.
The Narcissist and Total Package gimmick were Lex Luger’s most legit gimmicks. And Bad News Brown’s statement of him posing at himself in the mirror and being worried about getting plastic surgery after his match with Bruiser Brody is proof positive of that.
The Narcissist was his best gimmick in WWE. I understand why they made him a face however, I preferred him as the Narcissist wish it would have lasted longer.
He was hilarious as the narcissist. I still love the one jobber squash where after he knocks the guy out with the forearm, he looks around bewildered, acting like he doesn't know why the guy is unconscious

Yup me too. I was 4 years old when he had the narcisist gimmick thats one of the first things i remember from wrestling and one of the first things i remember period. The mirror and the running forearm, and my neighbour telling me he had a steel plate in his forearm. The lex express and him slamming yokozuna i remember even more vividly because i was a year or so older and more conscious of my sourroundings. I was a bret hart fan at that time though as almost every kid in germany. Later in WCW i always rooted for luger for old times sake, and he was pretty likeable at that time for sure, plus he had credibility as a big name from his WWE run. He doesnt get a lot of love from the smarks and the revisionist historians in hindsight but luger was a pretty cool wreslter back then. The first one to beat hollywood hogan...
WrestleMania IX was my all-time favourite, and I remember distinctly that it was Luger who was the heel in that one. He was so over as a narcissistic dink that it made Mr. Perfect look like a hero. Maybe he just got that mixed up. Back in those days it was stark who was the face and who was the heel. What memories…
Love Lex Luger. He never got proper credit for his work, everyone talks like he was Brakkus or something. If he was really that bad in the ring, he wouldnt have had a 20+ year career
I really have a lot of respect for Lex and how he turned his life around. I know he made a mistake about the Narcissist gimmick and the face/heel timeline, but then again none of us would ever make a mistake like remembering something 25-30 years ago?? Nah... we are too Narcissistic for that..LOL!!
He's wrong. Luger was the heel, the Narcissist gimmick was heel, Hennig was on his babyface run after turning face in November of 1992. Hennig lost the match to Luger with his feet clearly on the ropes, Narcisscist screwed Hennig, which led to Hennig chasing Luger to the back where Hennig was jumped by Shawn Michaels setting up their angle for Summerlam 1993.
Yes that is correct. He slammed Yokuzuna on the 4th of July on the deck of the USS Intrepid and that is when the all American Lex gimmick started. Major details like this not being remembered by guys that actually lived them leads me to wonder that if they can't get these dates or incidents correct, what else are they incorrect on when they do these interviews?
@@sanddune I was alive and watched the match in real time. Perhaps Lex can go watch it again on DVD or the Fed's network and refresh his memory before he sells certainty on a shoot interview. Funny...Bret Hart doesn't seem to have trouble recalling whether he worked heel or face in his matches and he suffered a stroke and a career ending concussion. Its preposterous that Lex doesn't recall whether he was heel or baby face at his wrestlemania debut.
When Lex talks about his experience with other wrestlers he NEVER puts down anybody. Others love to say he was an arrogant. I think he mind his own business and had a blast while others were too worried looking at him instead of carrying on with their own lifes.
growing up through the 90s watching wrestling with Lex ripped, smiling with the American flag was awesome. It hurts me to see him getting older and getting real skinny
I wish this Gimmick would of lasted. The NARCISSIST LEX LUGER was cool in my book. Such a good HEAL should of gave him a longer Run. I wasn't much of a USA LUGAR FAN. I was more upset they changed his gimmick so fast.
How is the guy managed by the the brain not the heel? If Heenan turned on Kurt or Kurt turned on Bobby the brain.. I would think Mr. Perfect was the baby face.
Lugar was the heel during this match Perfect was the face. Lugar never was face under the narcissist gimmick, he didn't become face until he body slammed yokozuna
I was hoping Hannibal would ask if the steel plate in his forearm is real. Seems nobody knows for sure. Luger was in the accident and Vince used it as an angle but did he really have it in his forearm?
MR PERFECT vs THE NARCISSIST could have been a hotter feud. Perfect costs Lex the title at 'MANIA X and Lex turns heel again. The Yankee Doodle Dandy crap wasn't working for Luger
I thought that the Narcissist gimmick fit Lex Luger well. He'd humiliate his opponent by posing in front of the mirror & have all the women scream for him. Then after the match, he'd grab them & make fun of them while looking at the mirror saying that they're fat or jubby. I know I might get some comments on here after I say this, but instead of Yokozuna, I think they should've given Luger a run as WWF Champion. I feel like if they had kept Lex Luger as the Narcissist, he could've been WWF Champion before anyone would even know it.
