Lex is my autistic 4 year old. He has been diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder Level 1. This video is to talk about his 4 year old signs of autism. High functioning autism is a term I don't necessarily care for but I feel when a child doesn't present with typical autism signs, it's so easy for their autistic traits to be overlooked. It doesn't make their needs any less important than a child who may present differently.

My son was diagnosed at 3 1/2 years as severely autistic. We were advised to institutionalize him immediately because, “he will never be able to function independently.” 😢 He’s 18 now, talks non stop 💪will graduate in May 2021, is in National Honor Society, and I’m planning our trip to Disney World so that he can meet Snow White! 🥰 He told me that she will be standing by the wishing well! 🤣 He was super skinny until he was 8 years old and I had to have his pants and shorts made! We found really cute patches to put on his pants and he’d peel them off chew on them so we had to sew them on! 💪😎

I think Lex's long hair is adorable! People never ask parents "why is your daughter's hair long?" or "why haven't you cut your daughter's hair?" so it irks me just a tad when people ask that about boys. Some boys like long hair too! :)
@jaynedavis3388
@jaynedavis3388 4 года назад
That’s a very good point. I do think that young kids are kind of genderless & people like to put a label on the things around them (no matter how “woke” you are, it’s how our brains work). I think people resent the extra brain capacity they have to use figuring out “what” your kid is. Haircuts are quick & easy (for most people) way to tell boys & girls apart
@DSDaly
@DSDaly 3 года назад
My son has long hair because he doesn't want to cut it. It bothers me that parents will force a crying boy to cut his hair but that would be considered child abuse to do to a girl. Not saying all kids with short hair had it forced on them, but I do know someone who fought with her son as he cried to cut it just because she's all about fashion and looking perfect all the time. The grandmother threatened to buzz it all off in his sleep as he cried.
@ballerslim9281

It's because boys and girls are different. society is not expecting a boy to have long hair... my son is four and has never had a hair cut and he gets mistaken for a girl sometimes.

So in a nutshell I've been watching you since Liam was a newborn and I've had problems carrying a full term baby for years and told I could never get pregnant. I carried my son that is 10 months now for 33 weeks without knowing. I watched your videos everyday! Every time I watch you he STARES at the tv and listens to you so intently. Like I want to cry hes been listening to you talk for months. He never pays attention to adult shows ever and I find it so amazing. I wish I could show you video, I pause it and he gets upset I play you and he always sits and listens so nicely which is rare!

I didnt know were to start with her, but your page helped me begin. her ASQ was 6 out of 30, on mchat she scored 10. so definitely made me realize I was not imagining things and she was very behind. Started early intervention were they said she is more like a 12 months old, and shes on the list to get diagnosed. thanks for everything!

I am thinking my son may have autism or sensory issues, but my husband doesn't exactly want to hear it! It breaks my heart that there is such a stigma associated! ❤❤❤

I am right there with you, Sarah. I’ve noticed my daughter is different from kids her age. I was concerned & mentioned it to my husband & we always end up arguing. My husband thinks I’m crazy & doesn’t want to hear the possibility that our daughter might be on the mild end of the spectrum. I just want my daughter to get the help she needs. I feel so alone because we recently brought it up to our family & no one agrees with me.

I can relate ❤️ So thankful many more parents are seeking to understand their children today. I grew up with “different” eating, and general sensory experiences and dyslexia. I was considered rather self centered and a more difficult kid. In school I was removed from the classroom together with a few other kids during math and writing/reading to get extra help grades 1-3. We were considered the “not so smart kids” and it definitely made me feel insecure. I have always known I learn differently but was never diagnosed. I had to figure out how to grow my strengths and work on parts that are more challenging to me. I also openly share my journey (I’m 55 now). Coming to know Jesus I now know I was made in the image of God, and I am eternally loved. ❤️ Thanks to moms/dads, for listening to your hearts and loving/supporting your kids for who they are.

It’s the opposite for us. My husband thinks he does but I don’t but also I spend more time with him so there are certain things that I know he does and says that my husband doesn’t get to see (he’s in the military). I’m just here trying to see if there are any indicators I am missing.

Love to follow you and hear about how far it have come with helping people with autism. 22 years ago when I became a mother for the first time, it was I who had to learn how my child worked. I have three children all with adhd + asbergers and more. They are doing well today overall. So maybe I did something right. I, have learned a lot from them. My beautiful 16 year old daughter decided to go in for testing. My sister has 2 sons with Autism. She and others with children on the spectrum have told me throughout her life that I should get her tested. My daughter was born at 26 weeks, so I expected whatever came our way. Her social skills have always been off and sensory issues to the extreme. Generalized anxiety since birth.just to name a few. She was in early intervention until age 3. She is wonderful. I focused so much on her medical issues, I didn't focus as much on anything else. Thank you for this. It is very informative.

It is interesting, after watching your videos, it seems like I am autistic and would explain so many things in my life. My mother has some of these issues, all of her grandchildren, my sister.... is this normal to be a family trait? I mean I have worked with Doctors that seem like they are on the spectrum. The majority of our family have at least a Bachelor degrees. I feel like this is almost like we are just created a bit different and learn a bit different. It will be interesting to see what the future holds with research.
@avvie24
@avvie24 9 месяцев назад
@@enlighteningprayers6727 Hi, I was doing some research on this. It turns out that families of people with autism can show similar behavioural traits as people with autism, even without being diagnosed as autistic. The family members of people with autism usually show milder signs compared to the family members that are diagnosed with autism. Autism also has a strong genetic factor, but every child with it can be different. In my bfs immediately family, 3 children have autism (they are cousins). It's interesting that a lot of people in your family have Bachelor's degrees. I've read that the family members of people with autism are often great at math and physics. They can also be quite creative. What's interesting for my bfs family is that my bfs grandpa on that side is a math professor and my bf studied physics in university. In that paper it was saying that the same genes that make a person creative and think outside of the box to be good at physics or math, contribute to autism so it is often seen in those families as well. New research is always coming out so it's interesting.

This has reassured me so much. My youngest has started labeling things now at 28 months. But she cannot speak practically. She cannot answer questions or tell me things but she can label things. People are starting to write her off and it drives me insane because sometimes you can just tell. And I KNOW there is a disconnect for her. She can’t tell me what she wants, she just screams and hits me. As weird as it sounds. It’s nice to know that there is a possibility for answers

I’m high functioning autistic and I actually spoke very early and had a large, advanced vocabulary at a very young age. I also was suspected to have hyperlexia (reading at a very early age). But I hated being touched, loud sounds, was a picky eater, poor social skills, poor facial recognition and expressions, and didn’t respond to my name well. Watching your videos has shown how autism is different in every case. Hence why it’s a spectrum :) 🌈

My almost 4 yr old too doesn’t have the classic autism. He is very delayed with speech. That is pretty much his only weakness. While most autistic kids struggle with sleep my son does not. Has always been a great sleeper, will sleep from 8pm-7-9am. Will takes nap a few times a week. For stimming he’s like lex, his stims aren’t too noticeable, more like typical kid behavior. My son is a cuddle buddy, loves to hug, lay, kiss, cuddle, he’s just always so sweet & cuddly. Never lines things up, never has been fond of blocks much or stacking. His thing has always been letters & numbers, obsessed. Puzzle, reading (started reading words at 1) can now read at least 100 plus words now. Academically he’s a genius. Doesn’t have much sensory issues. The typical autism sensory like noise lights commotion sounds textures etc. my son has no issues with. Has sensitivity to pain, low tolerate to pain. Although this speech is delayed & has a language disorder he is remarkable at communicating his wants, when he’s hungry he will verbally say I hungry, ask him what he wants & he will tell you exactly what he wants, when he has to potty he will tell you potty (just was potty trained 3-4weeks ago) The list goes on. But yes, I completely understand you & can see how frustrating it can be with doctors specialist. Because they’re always looking for the typical classic signs. Also my son was diagnosed early 16 months. I had to fight to have him tested. Everyone thought I was crazy. But i knew since out the womb that he was indeed autistic.
@jenweaver2049
@jenweaver2049 4 года назад
Also too, my son doesn’t free form answers. You ask him how are you & he always says “I’m fine” lol or if you ask his name he will always say it in the same tone, how old are you & he will always say I’m 3 (now we’re teaching him to say 4 since he’ll be 4) but he doesn’t understand the meaning of the questions let alone the answers that he’s giving. A lot of questions he does understand, like “what are you doing”, he will free form a response every time. He does great with yes & no questions, like are you tired, wanna go to lay down, are you hungry, do you have to potty, are you cold, are you done, do you want more, do you need help. Stuff like that he does great. But questions like what is your fav color, what’s your fav color, he can’t answer.

This sounds exactly like my son who is now ten, who I knew was on the spectrum and he was assessed at 3.5 and we were told no, he wasn’t. Fast forward to this summer, at ten years old, he was reassessed and this doctor said yes- there was no doubt or hesitation in her mind. She said she knew right away. But the first doctor at 3.5 said he wasn’t because he “made eye contact.” Also, when he was referred to speech around that same time, they said he didn’t have any issues with speech- it was just “baby talk.” So basically he went all these years without having access to services etc because they didn’t believe he had autism. So frustrating! (And his middle name is actually Alexander☺️) but yes Lex reminds me of him so much.

My son who is 12 now he talked early and very clear, but the playing social skills NO! He was and is still very almost territorial at our home, but not when he is outside of the home. He is very "good" @ school, but when he gets back to his comfort area he melts from masking all day. He did not play with kid toys except Nerf guns and some cars. We had him assessed and they said inconclusive😮. My daughter never missed a milestone, but now I know she has autism also she is social, but has no idea about how to or boundaries. She also does not answer me when I say her name until I say it several times. She has no stranger danger or survival alarms that should go off. Both have so many sensory issues, but both "seem" average unless you know anything about autism. I am self diagnosed after ADHD diagnosis and taking meds.

It's interesting with my family because I'm autistic, but my brother isn't. Yet we were both similar in a number of ways. My brother and I both had speech delays. He began talking at 2 1/2. I began talking at 3. He was in speech therapy until about 11 and I was in it until about 8. The only major difference there was that while he had a mild phonological delay, I had that and a mild expressive language delay. And, we both have mild sensory issues. But unlike me, he's always been great socially and super able to adapt.That just shows that speech delays and sensory issue don't necessarily mean autism.

I was diagnosed with NVLD at age 8 but I think I’m misdiagnosed my parents don’t believe me though I only went for 1 assessment and was diagnosed straight away.My parents started to notice something was off when I was 3 and I had extreme trouble focusing even with simple things like eating I had a hard time focusing on.my parents then brought me to a pediatrician and told my parents it was probably either high functioning autism or add.At age 4 I was obsessed with any type of animation and would love drawing out characters(age 6 was when I started)of my favourite movies and sometimes even rehearsed some movies I never even seen only heard of such as sleeping beauty which I never even watched the movie I wasn’t interacting with other kids very well and would sometimes even get into fights with other kids at daycare in one fight the other kid even bite me and my mom had to pick me up early because of it.I loved the feeling of pressure and spinning around and would sometimes spin around in circles.I would also tighten my seatbelt tighter than normal because of me craving pressure.I started handflaping around this age,had little to no eye contact. I still sometimes handflap if I get too excited.at age 6 my parents separated and because of my needs not being met at my first school my parents moved me to another school.I didn’t adjust well to making new friends and even hit one of the teachers and one of the kids in my class out of frustration and not knowing how to interact with people and manage my emotions.I was diagnosed NVLD at age 8 my teacher noticed I wouldn’t interact with other kids like normal and would lack focus and often daydream I also was behind in my language skills specifically knowing how to communicate what I think and argue my point.Because of this my teacher recommended I get an assessment my mom got me one and I was diagnosed NVLD straight away and got an IEP and a request for a school computer.At age 10 my communication skills were below average for my age and I wouldn’t engage in conversation except for with my one best friend and my family and even still they had to keep the conversation going .If I did I’d only respond with a basic answer such as if someone asked me how I was I would only respond with good and wouldn’t say anything else out of not understanding how to keep conversations going I’d also interrupt sometimes when I really wanted to say something and didn’t understand how taking turns talking worked.my teacher noticed I had low muscle tone and would often fidget get angry and aggressive such as yelling even shoving my desk violently sometimes.My school asked for another assessment but I’m currently waiting on my dad’s friend who’s a physiologist to do it (I’m so far still diagnosed NVLD) as I’m still waiting for another assessment and don’t know when I’m getting it done but I still struggle with some of these things such as lack of eye contact,daydreaming,focusing I still sometimes handflap or spin in circles.I have really good hearing and according to my family I have recently been talking to loud but I don’t notice and have trouble with knowing how to adjust my pitch of voice.Thanks to my conscellor my mom got me although I’m still behind for my age in communication I’m starting to improve thanks to my councellor.

I knew you made a video of autism overlooked! My son is almost 3 so he's about to age out of all his therapies so he needed a full pysch evaluation. My son has many autism characteristics but the doctor couldn't determine wether or not he has autism. He has a genetic disease, sotos syndrome so he's isn't sure if it's just sotos characteristics only or autism as well. Were going to have to wait until we can schedule a in person appointment (the evaluation was on zoom).... I was a Lil fraustrated. I was hoping for a yes or no just so I can know where to go from here . But I'm so glad for all the videos you make!

I don’t mean this in a mean way. But do you always use your hands that excesively when talking? If so. How do your autistic children handle that? I’m autistic and it felt so overwhelming I had to look away from the screen and go on audio only. Otherwise great video. Just curious without any ill intend

Yes I do and they handle it fine because they do the same thing LOL. I also don't mean this in a mean way (no ill intent) but not sure what the purpose of this comment is? I am autistic and use my hands to express myself, it's not something I can stop or change.

My 4 year old is diagnosed with autism. Im on the fence about it. He is completely none verbal which of course tells me something is definitely wrong. However, that is the only sign he has. He absolutely loves cuddles and I think he would snuggle all day long with me and dad if we allowed it. He will come to us a few times a day and climb in our laps and put his little arms around our necks and puts his head on our shoulders. If he wants something he grabs our hands and brings us to what he wants. With no speech being the only sign it is indeed strange. My parents tell me I didnt talk till I was 4. I'm definitely not autistic lol. I'm a registered nurse and I absolutely love people and my patients and have had a typical childhood expect for the fact that I have a very high I.Q. My oldest son was also in a special school for gifted children. So, I just don't know what to do at this point. Edit* He also doesn't have any disruptive behaviors. He doesn't have a mean bone in his body. He is almost angelic which I almost find abnormal in itself. He is the kindest child I have ever met, with empathy for others and listens to everything we say. If he picks up something we don't want him to have and we tell him no, he will immediately stop.

My daughter was VERY similar to how you describe Lex as far as when she acquired language. She didn't walk until 18mo. She didn't really talk words until 2/3. You couldn't understand a word she said until 1st grade. Shes 12 now and the speech evaluator says shes "fine" but she isn't. She doesn't pronounce R at all still. She calls herself a 12 year older instead of a 12 year old. She talks a lot like Noah quite often. She is has a high IQ that we didn't discover until we started homeschooling at 9 after her school psychologist put "mentally retarded" in her school file. She has trouble with names and dates. Often she knows all about something but just cannot explain. Doctors have whispered "autistm" and "aspergers" but have been reluctant to say yay or nay. They says she just doesn't quite fit any of the diagnosis neatly. They'll be convinced its just a language thing and then other times they are convinced shes high functioning and on the spectrum. They have her the ADHD label. My MIL is convinced ADHD should be part of the spectrum and be considered under that umbrella. Other doctors (her hubby) say they are separate. Both are brilliant doctors and neither can decide if she is or isn't on the spectrum. They sent us to friends who are also specialists in this area and they cant quite decide either. WE have heard maybe CAPD, Autistm, Asperger's, Language Based Learning Disability, some kind of speech issue, hearing issues, just an interesting kid, mentally retarded, high IQ, stubborn, shes messing with us, shes fine, we cant understand her but dont know". Its been a long 12 years. She could barely feed as a baby but only my mother in law thinks that's a clue. She always says "doctors hear hoof beats and think horses not unicorns. We should consider the unicorns more often". Things like a gluestick, she calls a pok of glue. She went through a stage where she literally humped everything. She still sucks her thumb. She chews her hair. We ask her to explain things and it isnt what youd expect from a 12 year old...however she knows EXACTLY what shes trying to say. If you give her a list of similar descriptions she will give you the correct one and can expand on that. She usually cant answer questions from scratch on her own. Shes afraid of nothing. She broke her arm the first day of Kindergarten and didn't even care. Even now it isn't a deterrent. Her arm was broken for 3 days before the swelling was noticeable. They swore at the ER it couldnt be broken because shed be screaming when they were touching it. It was broken in 4 places. She never even flinched. None of it adds up to autism but its enough to put us walking this thin line between like 5 things. We did speech when she was 6 and had to teach her first, next last, on, under ect. Once shes taught things like that she remembers but she uses the wrong words for stuff all the time. She doesnt know the months of the year. This year we finally gave up for a while. Between COVID and her growing anger over people trying to "find out whats wrong with her", we felt like we just had to back off for a bit. I hate not knowing. My mother in law told me to assume she is autistic at this point and work on the issues ourselves. I am so fortunate my Mom is working on a home where everyone is autistic. Most are there because they aren't safe in the community and have committed some kind of crime. My daughter is not as severe as some of those adults but a couple of them were tricked into doing bad things by adults and have to simply relearn the rules of society before they can leave. She shares an awful lot of traits. Its all exhausting not knowing and just guessing all the time. The thing that has kept doctors from actually giving her the diagnosis is that shes never really had temper tantrums or melt downs...pretty sure that is not an actual requirement. She does though, people just dont see it as a melt down. If shes in trouble she just wont talk.

How many therapists and doctors does one have to go to, to find out if a child is on the spectrum? I am a godparent to a child that is exhibiting subtle signs at 4 years old but my friend (the mom) only is consulting with one behavioral therapist. I care for my godson, but Im not the parent. Im just wondering if there’s a chance that one therapist can miss to diagnose. Just like how we often have 2nd or 3rd opinion with other health concerns.

How does one go about getting your child reevaluate when they already have a diagnosis
@OurLANDingCrew8
@OurLANDingCrew8 3 года назад
You just let them know you are getting them re-evaluated. For us, we just explained what happened, he has a diagnosis but she recommended 6-12 months later to have him re-evaluated to assure that he really was on the spectrum. It's very common especially as a child gets older. They also looked at his first set of tests done, repeated a few for comparison but then added in some extras to be more thorough in the diagnosis!

I had early intervention because my so was a premie by 7 weeks. He was a bit slower with some of his skills. They were worried because he slide down stairs. I was not! He had called down a few steps so he did not feel safe so I let him go down on his butt. Only at home he did it . But he was a preemie so I got what ever I could get him in to be the best he could be. He had low muscle tone in his legs. But we worked on that by trying to ride his trike that was hard. We went on walks s lot. We gave him boost from my dad. It did help him to gain a bit of weight. He was a skinny child. He is a big d has been tall. He is now 18 and an honor student in school. ( On line to start his senior year!). He is 6 feet 3 inches now and has possibly 3-4 years to grow yet. The doctor told us after he set and plated it with screws . His bones were that of a 23 year old and he was 17 then. Not really hoping he grows the 4-7 inches the doctor said he could grow. He is all arms and legs. Oh well I am sorry I rambled on.

This video came at a perfect time. We’ve been going through some increasingly rough stuff with our 4 year old little guy. He’s such a sweet kid and I know he has a heart of gold, but he just doesn’t seem to care at all about other peoples feelings, and he just terrorizes my friends daughter who’s also 4, and he beat on my 11 year old nephew this week while visiting my mom, and overall we just have so many reasons to believe he’s on the spectrum. We are also in Colorado, but are about to move to Nebraska and I’m honestly not sure where to even start with getting help. Any suggestions? He’s not currently in a school setting but we plan on getting him into pre-k at a nearby public school in August. It’s just really been a struggle and of course everyone has their opinions but I just need someone to tell me if it’s my fault or if there’s something going on with him that I just don’t understand. 😔
