Hi Lexicon ! I´m glad that you like it! This Band is very loved in Chile from band beginning! They spent a while exilied on France by Pinochet`s government , returning on 1982 to Chile. Los Jaivas provided in some ways a 'Freedom sensation " because it was possible listen Neruda´s Poetry inside of they music ( Putting music on Neruda´s Poems) On that time it was not allowed read or listen none "communist influence", but Pinochet could do nothing against them , because this group always was idolized by Chilean People , "under chilean people protection " On 1988,Drummer Gabriel Parra died in a car accident in Perú, his funeral was an event in which many people came from different cities, it was a great commotion!! From 1991 , Gabriel´s daughter Juanita Parra is the official replacement from her father. On 2003, leader singer Eduardo Gato Alquinta died , another great commotion!! but Los Jaivas keeps playing until now... In 1979 Los Jaivas toured England for the first time. They played at the Shaftesbury Theatre in London, where they were seen by a writer from Music Week. He later wrote that Gabriel Parra was one of the ten top drummers in the world Regards from a Chilean girl !! Sorry for my English.....
Los Jaivas weren't exiled at least politically. They left the country since the political and culural conditions for their own developement as musicians were not good. So they emigrated to Argentina and then to France. Los Jaivas returned to Chile in 1981 in a glorious national tour and since then they came to play every year. By the way good channel!
Hi, I know this post is from last year but about the exile question, Los Jaivas were never in exile. They left the country because they wanted to experience life abroad. They had already decided to leave and the coup came in '73, so they had to postpone a bit the trip but they went to Argentina a short period of time afterwards. Los Jaivas were never a political band, like Illapu, Inti Illimani etc., so they never had any problems whatsoever. They came back to Chile many times while living in Argentina and France, as a band and as civilians, and they never had a problem to enter the country and give concerts. The bands that were kicked out were the political bands that sang protest songs, but fortunately those bands weren't very good so it wasn't such a big deal xd
They were never exiled because they never got into politics. They just left because they wanted and had better opportunities in Argentina and then in Europe. That's why they had no problem comming back.
Great song and performance. They came back in 1981 allowed by Pinochet's government and they kicked his ass with only their music and talen. Pinochet could not do anything against this power. It was the beginning of the fall
in fact, Los Jaivas were never exiled, they were self-exiled. But since they were not musicians who were in any political party nor were they very adherents of Allende, they were, if not the only ones, who entered the country in the midst of the dictatorship and toured the entire country doing concerts without any problem since 1982, I even went to them. to see the Parque Schott stadium in Osorno in 1983, they were not chased or followed while they were doing their concerts. It is even said that they were reprimanded by other musicians for not having a clearer and more direct position against the dictatorship, even for the Government of Piñera when Barak Obama visited the country they went to play La Moneda.
Love them! Did you know that when Gabriel, the drummer, passed away, his daughter, Juanita took his place in the band? They are still amazing. Recently they celebrate 50 years as Los Jaivas ¡Vivan Los Jaivas y su música maravillosa!
