46mpg (about 5.1l/100km) for a car this size, in real road conditions i assume, it's surprisingly good. But too bad they ditched the GS and it's RWD from Europe. Let's hope for a awd version, at least, but i doubt.
This is the second of our new review style. Following feedback from the last one we've reduced the length by a few mins and cut down on the ammount of camera transitions such as zooms and spins etc so it feels more 'normal'. Let me know what you think.
I was personally ok with the rhythm of the old videos. A few very well put together bite-sized segments like 5 good/bad things about the car and very good pacing. This feels more like your run-of-the-mill review you can find on lesser channels. My 2p.
@@shawnmichael9331 well I've owned 2. My first a 335i the injectors went bad, twice, fuel pump and vanos issues. Also by 70,000kms the engine started sounding horrible. Idled louder and rougher than my Jetta TDI with 300,000 kms on it. Luckily I was able to get rid of it at 100,000 kms for a decent amount. I took great care of it changing the oil every 10k twice as often as BMW recommends. I thought I was unlucky and got a dude so we bought an X3 with the N2 engine. Wasn't too bad for the majority of its life. It died twice on the freeway because of ignition issues, lucky under warranty, but the kicker was at 100,000kms the timing chain went and the engine blew. BMW blamed me because I changed the oil myself (even though I again did it every 10k and used to quality oil (ams oil)). So we now have an expensive paperweight sitting in our driveway that I don't know what to do with. Side note, when we had our x3 at the dealer getting diagnosed, I started a conversation with a technician who was on smoke break, he said our car was one of 5 in their shop at the time with a broken timing chain. Also a friend of mine bought a 430i and new and sold it after 6 months after it had been in the shop a total of 5 weeks with various issues. So ya pretty much any brand is more reliable then BMW
The German Brand's nickel and dime you to death for things that should be standard by now. It never ceases to amaze me how some folks seem to glaze over the fact that German cars typically have a lot of electrical issues. That's just a fact. These cars are very difficult to maintain. I have friends and family members who've had really bad and very expensive experiences with BMWs and Mercedes. I just think the German brands are made for people who can afford not to care how expensive the cars are to maintain. I believe their primary target is upscale customers. Although Lexus caters to upscale customers as well, I believe they target a much wider range of clients on both the high and lower ends of the financial scale, so reliability is a must.
@@svein-haraldribland8559 Not good enough for what? Most people don't drive cars on the racetrack. The average consumer is typically driving back and forth to work in rush hour traffic. I think some folks just get caught up on the brand name and the prestige that comes along with having a BMW or Mercedes. For us regular folks, we like to get the best bang for our buck, and reliability is a must. Lexus knocks it out of the park when it comes to reliability compared to those other brands.
@@PreferAndroid Germans and Lexus go after the same exact demographic. In fact, the ones on the wealthier side, I've noticed, go towards Lexus. The younger ones tend to like BMW more, regardless of reliability. Germans and reliability are an infamous duo, so everyone knows about how much they cost to maintain.
This was a very good honest review. I bought this model in the states, and love it for my commute. I’ll concede the shortcomings. They are much cheaper to repair than the Germans, and the brakes last to 150K miles since The regenerative braking takes most of the load. My fourth Toyota / Lexus hybrid in 15 years, and this one is the best at disguising the CVT’s motorboating noise. 🤓
Reviewing Mazda 6: "The sunroof blind is manual, but why not! Look how easy it is! I quiet like it" Reviewing Lexus ES: "Five annoying things: You have to open the sunroof blind manually." Thinking face emoji?
I've had a 2019 ES300h F Sport Takumi for a few months now. Most of this review I agee with but there are a few bits i don't. 1. The infotainment system is not that bad 2. the position of the parking brake is not an issue as you can set it to come on automatically when you put the car in park 3. i haven't even noticed the scratchy plastic he's so upset about 4. I haven't had an issue with the sound of the engine 5. I'm getting about 50mpg One bit i do agree with is the rear view camera is pants
I thought the GS would be the competitor for the A6, 5 series and the E class. The ES seems to be in a class of its own, focusing mainly on transporting passengers in comfort and being affordable.
@@pratimanchoubey5591 quality and reliability. The only downsides are poor infotainment and poorly performing driving aids like lane assistant but I can live with that.
He's already reviewed the RX and LS. And I don't think you can get the LX In the UK. The GS has been discontinued in the UK. However the others I agree with.
I owned a Toyota for 5 years, bought it when it was 2 years old, I did ZERO maintenance on it, no oil change no maintenance whatsoever (I didn't even know that I was supposed to take it to shop for regular maintenance), only replaced battery 2-3 times and tyres as the usual, and maybe light bulb, and guess what, that Toyota car served me well, it never broke down, the only issue i had with it was when I had an accident and the car sat in the repair shop for over a month which then caused me trouble. Now I own a Lexus ES for 4 years now, bought it when it was 2 years old, done some little maintenance on it except recently haven't got time to take it to shop. And guess what, it still serves me well, zero problem and it works and it works and it works and it drives like new. You want reliability? You want a Toyota & Lexus.
@@petitflocon647 Yes it makes sense to have scratchy plastics down where it’s gonna get scuffed and knocked around. This guy is hyper sensitive about scratchy plastics though and always comments on it no matter what the car is.
😂 Why does he care so much about surfaces that he doesn't have to touch constantly/regularly like door handles/steering wheel/gear lever/seats etc. He ALWAYS gets into a car and starts scratching everything. I wonder if he has reviewed a vehicle with a plastic bumper and complained about how scratchy it is. Honestly kinda silly.
The LS and GS are rear wheel drives where ES is a front wheel drive. So how can the ES be a baby or younger LS? The GS IS a younger, sportier version of the LS.
Except they dont have that quality... They're full of harsh, nasty, plastic bits everywhere. No noble materials at all. No design language either. Boring interior. Worse practicality. Shitty performance. Wobly driving dynamics... And these hybrids are actually quite expensive to mantain. A battery change in an old GS300h costed about 5000 euros when out of warranty. A planetary rebuilt was another 2000 euros. And that was a way better built car than this silly stretched out Camry. Toyotas hybrids are quite reliable actually but Lexus' ones? Nah, they're just horror stories waiting to happen.
I used a portion of my retirement money to buy one of these beauty. My wife didn't like it at first, but now she is okay with its due to car's high degree of comfort.
Mercedes will never compare with a lexus. Lexus is and always will be miles ahead, rather have a car that i can take anywhere than one where i have to pray to god that it doesn’t break down 2 minutes into a drive 😂😂
It is not better than a BMW 5 series but i would still choose ES over it. Had a chance to test drive it and loved it. Kids also loved them so much that they asked me to buy it.
Thank you for the EXTREMELY ACCURATE and most importantly, *HONEST* review! I totally agree with you , especially on the issue of the *noisy engine that drones* when you accelerate, and also the fact that Lexus cars are not comfortable anymore! The German vehicles have become vastly superior, leaving Lexus in the dust, and this is due to Toyota's own doing!! It appears they've gone mad! That said, I must say I am a loyal Lexus/Toyota buyer, and I buy them primarily for their *RELIABILITY AND DURABILITY* which is *LIGHT YEARS* ahead of the German vehicles. When the German vehicles have turned to dust, the Lexus or Toyota product will have just been "broken in". And, of course, as you correctly pointed out, the quality of the interiors and the fit an finish is amazing! If it were not for the reliability or durability, I wouldn't touch a newer Toyota or Lexus product with a 10 foot barge pole. They have become extremely unrefined, noisy and do not do anything well, all in the so called name of being "sporty". And I personally, don't like the direction they've taken in terms of the styling as well, although this is an area that is subjective! Most so called "automotive journalists" just sugar coat everything and simply heap praises upon praises for a particular car, while nitpicking a very small thing here and there, just to show the (mostly idiotic) audience that they are "being fair" and pointing out the negatives as well. But this is an obvious farce, done to suck up to the manufacturer. Kudos to you for being a breath of fresh air!!
Idk why people compare the performance of daily use suvs and sedans, though its just my view but i think they should compare the comfort instead... just my view
@@angry_budgie1236 It's certainly unreliable here in the UK according to warranty statistics that show a much greater frequency of repairs and on average higher repair costs. www.reliabilityindex.com/manufacturer However I must admit I'm not super keen on this Lexus as not a fan of CVT transmissions and you expect a decent infotainment system on a luxury car. I don't get this review though, surely the much better reliability of the Lexus should always be mentioned otherwise it feels like the review has its own agenda but I guess these reviews are more a surface level review of the Lexus and should be judged on that only. Many other variables come into play for those actually considering a purchase.
@tuboludo Bmw sold in Us is built in mexico ( i believe wv group cars too) and mercs made in Us are no where near in reliability compared to ones made in germany. Thats why in europe reliability rankings german cars are above average unlike in US
Neglects to mention the Lexus is FAR SUPERIOUR to the German alternatives in RELIABILITY. The number one feature in any vehicle is its ability to consistently function as intended! The Lexus has this... the German alternatives... do not. And it's not even close.
@@rukahs43 We would mind if they were really that often as most of you toyomorons think it is... And no, reliability is not number one feature of any vehicle. That would be safety, and the Europeans blow Lexus and their decade old platforms... Additionally, lot of people who go for the premium segment would rather have a bit of fun while driving instead of rock solid reliability. Going on some twisty road with a 5 meters long wobly fwd sedan for which you paid a fortune feels wrong. And going back to those terrible reliability issues and getting stuck on the road. We, proper premium car buyers, use the money we earn so that reliability doesnt really hinder us... I never had an issue with my CLS (a proper buttery smooth inline 6 powered piece of machinery) but even if I did, my insurance would come, retrieve my car and taxi me home. Additionally, MB as a proper premium brand, would offer me a comparable car as a replacement while mine would be in for fixing. Of course, all of this is not cheap. But again, this is the real premium experience. Not just buying an expensive car. Toyota, doesnt offer this. You can barelly customize a Lexus. You get some Prius as a replacement when you take your car in for fixes. You dont get concierge systems or brand events invitations. Her in Europe, since they're barelly selling anything, they dont even have the decency to have a proper for spare parts in case you need some quick bumper fixes or simple stuff like that. You have to wait until it gets imported from god knows where. A silly CT200 bumper taking more than a month to be fixed... Trips to the repair shop are the least of the worries of Lexus owners, youre right. And anyways... Lexus has its days counted... They're so late to the electric car transition, and reliability will be such a non issue with electric cars... Their entire business model will be blown out
I can't understand why comparison company like carwow compares a lexus hybrid with german diesel and petrol cars, there is no comparison to make so stop doing it. I'm 71 and owned Mercedes and BMWs all my driving life, I have had my first lexus hybrid for just over a year now and I can honestly say my lexus is far superior in every department compared to Mercedes and bmw, lets face it lexus don't break.
Here in China the base ES260 starts at around £33k, the top model here ES300h is £50k. In comparison a Merc C-class base C180 (with a 1.5t) is £28k and the base Merc E-class E200 (with 2.0t) is £49k, a top spec E-class (also 2.0t) here is £100k...so it’s a little unfair to compare the es to the 5series or e-class. It might be similar in size but in price it’s way cheaper and has loads of tech.
PJ Yopa I’m not Chinese just live here. From Uk...vpn yes....most Chinese people aren’t bothered to use western social media or RU-vid. Have their own stuff. Better integrated across platforms
When Mat talks of scratchy in bits and places like door panels, under the centre console, I wonder what material does he expect to have in there? Personally that does not bother me.
No ones mentioning Jaguar. I bought 2015 XFR and.. im not going to buy their car again. I had to spend another 1/5 of original price since i bought the car. About to hit 70000km :) Now im gonna get Camry
@@Vanessa-bj8bw better than having your car at the mechanic with no vehicle paying thousands BMW n47 engine for example, BMW don't even take liability to recall em
Any car is relaible if you look after it not necessarily a bmw is unrelaible and a Lexus is relaible. If you treat a bmw according to manufacturers instructions it’s as reliable as a lexus
Very good and honest review. Totally agree on the suspension. Older model is better on suspension. They need to upgrade to Mercedes style. Other than that. Everything is amazing in this car
Had a mercedes and a bmw 5 series The mercedes for 80 years old The bmw 5 series ugly exterior !! Didnt change for 10 years only a minor facelift not worth the price !! The new es i currently owm is amazing comfortable And class !! You will never see a low life in a lexus only class people❤❤
Nonsense - when he attempted to rest his head on the headrest, his head hit the roof! That's completely unacceptable in a sedan that size, for a person of his height.
I feel like people shite on the infotainment system but I don’t see that big of a problem with it. Especially if you just end up using car play. Only problem I have with it is that it’s gets a little difficult to swipe through a big list like on Spotify.
2.5L AND an electric motor and it has 218bhp... what... how...? Were they ACTIVELY TRYING to create a less powerful unit? And it’s not like 46mpg real life is anything to argue the case for those numbers.
I think Lexus has more gorgeous design than Mercedes and BMW, because the two car has more sporty or aggresive design but Lexus has the smoother design. That's why i like Lexus than other European (not all European) car, because it's look like more elegant looking outside unlike Mercedes like some sporty aspect.
I am starting to believe Mat truly is partial to German cars. He's rapping the car for things that it wasnt built for. Talking about not getting gear heads excited? It wasnt aimed at those people. I watched other reviews of this same car and theyre completely different in their perspectives. Losing confidence in this channel
The new reviewing style is a good improvement, especially the sound effect when you mentioned the sword thing and the part where you compared it to a teenager were hilarious! Awesome editing!
Should specify it is ES 300H Hybrid on the title. Also, I’d like know about how sport mode feel on the road especially the hybrid version of ES and real world gas mileage performance it gives.
The ride is as good as a Mercedes E. Mercedes also give jolts to hard and sharp bumps. Only the S class muffles them almost completely out. Mercedes goes up and down slowly, Lexus a bit of side to side rock sometimes. It's as good a car as a Mercedes and has a different focus in its road manners.
i’m p sure that the es and is models compete with the 5 series and a3 and a4 and c class. The GS usually competes with the 5 series so i don’t know why this comparison is being made
As a BMW 5 series driver, I find this so true. I’ve had it for less than half a year and it’s gotten 3 visits already! Granted one was a paint job from hitting another car.
I don't know if you meant this as a joke, but in my personal experience this is actually true. Everyone in the dealership, especially the service and parts departments... will know you on a first name basis. You'll even be friends with them on facebook and whatsapp. Even when you pull in into their parking lot they'll know its you. This would have been good if they knew me because of my very impressionable personality. But the actual reason was because I was a regular when it comes to repairs, break downs, and servicing. The guy in the parts department had come to know me so well that he always tried to give me the maximum allowable discounts on parts I needed. I only buy Japanese these days. 400k on my current car and haven't done a single repair, just take it for normal service.
@aj lana I feel like people who say German cars are unreliable, just say that because they can't afford one. Also, you can't take into account these owners surveys as they constantly contradict themselves. They are based on customer experience, not actual factual data, so a reliability problem maybe their bluetooth not working. Studies in UK and Germany have shown BMW's and VW the most reliable for fleet car buyers for example.
Why don't you comment on reliability and the cost of owning? A Lexus, being produced by Toyota, is waaaay cheaper to own and maintain over the lifetime of the car and has a much higher quality of components (everything not merely aesthetic) than it's German rivals. The Lexus can go for thousands of miles after the similar German cars have become endless money pits. I love your videos, and it would be very enlightening if you could comment on reliability, expected cost of maintenance, etc. for those of us who like to keep our cars for a long time and would like to see programmed obsolescence disappear from the car industry. Just compare the quality of the old mercs with the modern ones... I think it's worth mentioning that some brands make their cars to last much longer than others. It is very valuable and interesting information for buyers. Thanks for your great job!
Totally agree with you. Not many car reviews talk about the reliability of a car. Only a true car person would know - owner of a 2013 FJ Cruiser comparing with a mate's newer X6 or LR3.
Not really, where I live. Lexus parts will cost u double of German rival and over time Lexus dashboard and leather will crack. Something, I have never seen in any German cars. I am starting to doubt you even own a Lexus.
dulsaf2630 not really the case in the US. Parts for Lexus vehicles are only slightly more expensive than Toyota’s, while the Germans are far more expensive.
@@dulsaf2630 So you say "over time"... You know what happens to the German rivals over time? Nothing. They don't last for more than 3 years! By the time their Leather could naturally crack, the car is gone. Stop arguing about Lexus not beating your little preferred ones in reliability, because you got no arguments. There are no arguments.
I'm on 70k in a GS, so I'm 70% of the way to confirming this ☺ Convinced someone it was brand new last November (at about 68k). I also average about 37mpg at the moment, which doesn't sound great but nobody will find me a German car that'll do that, has luxuries like moisturising aircon and also goes from 0-150 only 1 second slower than an Aston Vantage (admittedly not the new one, but the same age as the GS). Just a shame the ES isn't as fun as the GS...
@Anton Babani I've had 3 BMWs 2 Ford/Lincoln 1 Mercedes and 2 Lexus. My 2 favorite Cars are/were the 5 series I had and the IS350. Nothing wrong with BMW Lexus or Mercedes. All are pretty damn nice cars
I just love the fact that Lexus puts so much effort into their cars. The ES looks nothing like it’s rivals which makes it unique. Even with their sports cars they stick to big NA engines not small turbocharged engine. Much respect

@@charles-davidberube1174 it's not that Lexus doesn't try. They go through intensive reliability testing on every engine components before they're released to the public. The last thing you want is something unreliable coming from Toyota and people shout and rant about it in the media. What Toyota has done is great, and I do love they're the most reliable when it comes to car buying. If I want something faster or more fun to drive, I can go get myself a BMW, but for people who commute to work everyday on a busy road, Toyota is superb.
@@NBASFAN That's true. Toyota does put effort into making their cars, and I think both the Japanese and European luxury cars have different things you can appreciate. Also long story short, just buy what you like! Some prefer a Lexus, others like BMWs and Mercs, no harm done to anyone for wanting something different! ^^
I love the new ES. It's really kind of its own thing rather than a straight E-Class/5series competitor (that's the GS)..and in my country (Australia) it's a price class below too. Best thing is that 4 or 5 years, someone can buy one of these knowing it will cost a lot less to keep on the road than a European equivalent.
Lovely looking car, and full of features. It's pretty typical of his reviews of Lexus vehicles, being a lover of German cars. People buy the Lexus because of it's reliability., unlike a BMW which uses so many plastic components.
Lexus is not more reliable than BMW because of the plastic, lol. You guys are absolute clowns. Why dont you keep your opinions in a box if theyre gonna be this dumb. BMWs are less reliable than Lexus' because they are generally 50% more powerfull and 70% faster and 100% stiffer while also managing to be more efficient... And all of this causes more wear and tear than what a grandpa mobile performance is able to do. Most engine components that were resin based in old BMWs were there because of weight saving BTW. Lexus and Toyota could learn a little about it.
@Colin Flaherty Videos Daily I mean, mate, all you do is post videos of African-Americans doing crime. That's your entire life? Don't you seem, dare I say, a little bit butthurt about black people?
The 5 series will give you the performance and power you would expect from a luxury car. Driving stability is far better than the Lexus that's for sure
When I see a Lexus I see value for money, reliability, efficiency and a high resale value. German and other European cars are all expenses and hype and some of the most unreliable things you can find.
A6 got scratchy plastics to. And there is to much problems and to own the same equipments you pay 15% more. That s why the A6 is not a good selling. I never see them on the road.. no one want it.
Over and over again....all this talk of it being bettered by the Germans..... I just don't get it how every car reviewer on RU-vid just completely ignores long term reliability, resale values etc.... Wouldn't that be something that would influence a buyer's decision? Love the videos as always, but wishing that it would not be just just talk about which gimmicky tech is better!
What man that can afford 100k car will think whats gonna happen in ten years? that rich man will have a new car after 5 years if not earlier. So it makes sense to buy a car better in other aspects rather reliable car.
@@aurimixas Its a Lexus ES, not an LS.....not a rich person car as such.....esp in the Middle East where I am from... And reliability does matter - even if its a new car (imho)....
hands down, the best car I ever owned. (2019 in California) I drive about 2500 miles per month. Gas in California is $4.25 per gallon. In Eco Mode and driving with a lite foot. I average 47 MPG. Hand down. Super comfortable, well thought out display. My only gripe is the infotainment system, not user friendly.
I won't even take a new German car for a long drive. I am more likely to take a used Lexus...I know it won't stall me. Give it up European car lovers, your cars are only good for 30 thousand miles. After that, repairs, repairs, repairs. The manufacturers love you. They know they make money on parts and labor on you.
