I installed the transmission cooler today. Thanks for the guide Bob. The nipples that came with the cooler, I used to that plugged the hoses. It worked great! No leaks at all.

Great video Bob! One suggestion: I had a ton of trouble getting the return house to slide onto the metal tube (very tight connection), so in the process, all the fluid I just put into the cooler dumped out of that hose onto me. Instead of trying to attach all the hoses with a full cooler, consider filling the cooler, and the emptying that fluid into another container and pumping it into the regular transmission fill hole. Then you can install the cooler empty and not worry about spilling fluid.

One unexpected (perhaps) benefit of such a cooler installation is that it not only helps the transmission run cooler, but it reduces the heat pushed into the radiator by the transmission fluid, which gives a little more margin in hot weather at keeping the engine at thermostat temperature. I know of some vehicles/applications where the transmission can push so much heat to the radiator that it can cause the main radiator to overheat. Since the transmission will only drive X amount of temp rise in the fluid at a given load, a reduction in inlet temps to the trans should translate nearly 1:1 into cooler trans outlet temps too (i.e. cooler fluid hitting the radiator).
@rodeld7225
@rodeld7225 2 года назад
Thx bob. Did this also a few weeks ago using the 678. Only difference is I bypassed the radiator cooler to eliminate the possibility that coolant will ever mix into the transmission if a leak within the radiator was to ever happen. I’ve had this happen to a pathfinder in the past and I’ve heard it happening to to other vehicles as they get older. As for results, prior to installing the cooler, the average trans temp was 220 and reached 248 on climbs without towing. Post Hayden the average is 190 and 205 on climbs. Thx for sharing. Great video and I wish you posted before I went through it. The hose pliers would have helped a lot. Btw- I have a premium model therefore I have the rear climate control. Therefore there is an aux fan on the passenger side. The 678 does fit on the drivers side with the horns on the same mounting point. You will need to get an longer bolt though.

@GXBOB

First of all, California invented bbq. Secondly, I would not tie the 2 horns together. When I honk the vibrations create a really weird sound. I would use thicker foam pieces between the brackets and structure. I would also do a complete radiator flush since I already introduced air into the system. Other than that, I’m quite happy with the install and the trans cooler.
@bygonebob
@bygonebob Месяц назад
I prefer the pipe and fin cooler instead of the plate and fin because the flow of the fluid is so much better with the former - nearly no pressure drop. Problem with worm gear clamps over springs is that their grip is fixed so when rubber deteriorates or shrinks the clamps will come loose and you’ll have leaks. This is why car manufacturers don’t use them. Spend the extra $$ on spring clamps and you will never have problems of them loosening over time. Apart from these, great instructional video and Q & A session. Keep it coming. 👍

This video, as always, was an excellent guide to the install. I was actually able to install mine without taking the front completely off. I just loosened it and pulled it forward, supporting it on the bottom using some bins I had in the garage. This kept me from having to disconnect all the parking sensors and headlight washers. Would it have been an easier install with the front off? Definitely. But it wasn't bad. Also, if you have the secondary fan on the passenger side of the radiator and don't want to fashion new brackets for your horns, good news. You can just bend the horn brackets back and leave them in the stock location. Plenty of clearance between this secondary cooler and the radiator when you do that. Thanks Bob!

Bob, wonder why you would think that you really need the external cooler. As I understand Lexus designed the internal radiator cooler to be sufficient even when towing. Did you measure temperatures before you did the add? I understand lots of people talk about the trans temps when towing but haven’t seen any clear evidence they get too high, unless for towing up in the Rockies and even then the temp spikes are only for short times. interesting approach. just watched another video that suggested using the bottom port on the transmission cooler as the input (out fr the radiator) and the top as the output (back to the transmission); opposite of this video. the benefit is that you can connect the bottom hose before filling the cooler w/ fluid. less spillage and easier. regarding the possibility of air being trapped, it's not an issue because the transmission has a breather. any excess air will be purged. no wrong away. just a different approach. also, galvanized metal also has a anti-rust coating an is less expensive. The general rule of thumb is to choose a cooler that is rated for at least three times the weight of the trailer you are towing. My travel trailer being a little under 2000lbs makes the Hayden 678 almost within the proper size range for the stuff i tow and I also considered the amount of towing i do. I think the Lexus oem one is a joke and is really meant for daily city driving without serious consideration to towing boats/trailers uphill to Big Bear in the middle of summer. @GXBOB
@GXBOB 6 месяцев назад
Are you talking about the sorry excuse of a cooler that's built into the radiator? Or are you referring to the external OEM tranny coolers only offered in the US market as an option starting in 2020 for Luxury trims w/Offroad package? Either way, an aftermarket transmission cooler to supplement the "extra" plumbing embedded in your radiator is the better choice if you are doing off-roading or towing, especially in hot weather.
@hurpaderpp
@hurpaderpp 6 месяцев назад
@@GXBOB I saw a comment on reddit that I misinterpreted to think all of the luxury gx's facelift onward in the US had the OEM coolers. Knowing now that my 2016 has the POS one built into the radiator I am 100% doing this mod again for my GX, butim going to totally bypass the radiator like I did with my 4runner.

@@kanevivalakane3699 So i'm doing a lot of eye brow raising because my tranny is running cooler towards the low end of the spectrum between 185-190 while towing on 4th gear. But then again, i never looked at the temps prior to the tranny cooler install so i have nothing to compare it to.
@blang1
@blang1 2 года назад
Maybe one other point to your configuration: Since it is blocking part of the radiator, that passthrough air will be a lot cooler once it reaches the radiator than if it were first in line for ATF cooling. The other configuration would be blowing hot air all over your radiator thus decreasing its own engine cooling ability and probably making the cooling fan work alot harder. Also the air blockage my be an argument for a smaller cooler though. Finally, that horn configuration will decrease your overall horn performance by 3.27 dB.

Damn blang, i appreciate the extra knowledge sharing.
@blang1

@@GXBOB Overall it would be interesting to see if the average engine temps increase while the ATF temps decrease. If the engine temps are pretty much the same before and after the install then we are solid gold.

Hey Bob, love all your videos and learned a lot! This video got me inspired to install a transmission cooler. However, I saw there is another approach of running a bypass to avoid the mixture of fluid. What is the pros and cons of each method in your perspective and have you considered making a video of running a bypass installation for the transmission cooler as well? Thank you and love your contents!
@GXBOB
@GXBOB Год назад
Yo yo yo. Great question. The prospect of that happening is like every 10 to 15 years dude. Go buy yourself a new radiator and install it. The key is to consistently maintain your vehicle and being proactive. There’s alot of stuff i do before things break down. I’m not bypassing anything because what you’re doing is trading one evil for another. I’d rather have optimal tranny temps as opposed to running my tranny before it even has a chance to warm up. Doing that daily will lead to early tranny failure. An external cooler bypass only prolongs this process. An external cooler is only good to keep the tranny from over working while putting a load on your vehicle. You need your radiator daily. You need a cooler only sometimes, if that makes sense. Also keep in mind that liquid to liquid cooling is more optimal than air to liquid. In conclusion, if you want to sleep better at night, install a new radiator every 7 years or so. I call it the 7 year itch.

Anything on the 12-volt solution remote starter?
@GXBOB
@GXBOB 2 года назад
I hate to say this but systems such as 12volt are plug and play which limits many other options that are programmable. An important feature needed to keep your engine running when u disarm your vehicle requires a double pulse to your vehicle's disarm input. I've heard so many issues relating to this. I reached out to 12volt but was unable to get a sample unit in order to diagnose for their customers.

Metal edge protector seems like it’ll work to protect the hoses going through the radiator section.
@GXBOB
@GXBOB 2 года назад
The protection was required throughout the length of both hoses. The loom worked well. Edge protector is found to be unique to only the radiator wall cut-out. I started padding the cut-out before i realized there were so many different areas the hose could chafe besides just the cut-out.

@@GXBOB I finally completed this install this weekend. I made brackets using 1/8" aluminum- what a PITA to make without the right tools. I lost all the fluid while connecting the bottom line and ended up doing a trans fluid level check, which was good since it allowed me to check fluid condition as well.

@GXBOB
@GXBOB Год назад
George i don’t recommend it. I prefer to switch out my radiator before the average fail life of 100k. Preferably with an all aluminum or new Denso. Doing a bypass actually harms your tranny more than it does good by switching from liquid/liquid cooling to air/liquid cooling which is less optimal. Plus promotes early tranny failure by not allowing your tranny to warm up efficiently at every start up.

Great vid Bob. It’s pretty clear you did a lot of research before you did this mod, and we all benefit. Questions: 1) Did you go back almost to step one and install the protective loom? 2) Did u have special tools to make the brackets? How thick is the ss? 3) I’m willing to purchase a set of brackets if your willing to make a set.
@GXBOB
@GXBOB 2 года назад
Mike, 1) I had to go back to install the loom after putting the bumper back because i didn't want to lose momentum. I would have to pack everything up (filming equipment, tables, stands, parts, etc...). If i took my other car i had nobody to stay and watch my stuff not get stolen. 2) The SS bracket thickness was roughly 1/32". I had a metal fabricator make the bracket for me as a favor, but that is overkill. You can just buy a sheet of metal from your local hardware store and dremel one out yourself w/ a cutting wheel. Use a pair of pliers and table vice to bend them into shape. I would have to ask my fabricator if he is interested in doing some side business but i'll get back to you.
