Our 2005 Lexus SC430 hasn't seen a mechanic peer under its hood in two years and 5,000 miles. Since the car already has 160,000 miles, the worry is it might need some major work.
@@lexusls4305Hi (& hello), iMac Pro, home TV are my main viewing media. If you go to the link and then 2.20 (approx) I see major blurring. I still watch the content, just surprised it happened again as I thought the first example was a one off. love the videos. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Q1PyEg0uiLY.html
"It's a little dirty. You can tell." It didn't look dirty at all to me. Darker than brand new but oil gets dark just from the heat it's exposed to inside the engine.
I had the headlight issue on my 2004 LS430. There was a module that sits on the rear axle, and the connections had become corroded. This resulted in the headlights defaulting to a downward position. New module, problem solved. I believe it was around $400, back in 2010.
All common with the age of the car. Our oldest Lexus in current line up is a 2004 RX. Had to replace the valve cover gasket already. The rubber starts deteriorating, making oil sheep out, usually on the exhaust causing a burning smell. Also, doing shocks this week. Going with an aftermarket KYB from rock auto, with almost 18 years and 200k the gas liquid in the original shocks has leaked out and caused a more bouncing ride. Also changing the mount, and strut bellow with swap bar end links.
You guys amuse. The gaskets should be tendered to, plan for strut replacement soon and the dome light not functioning are probably just bulbs that need replacing (piece of cake). As for a yearly routine you might want to consider a battery tender for winter months and oil changes at the beginning of the season as well as the end of the season. The light leveling system was something I had hoped to learn from you. Enjoy you summer!
mine is a 2008 with a little more than 200,000 miles it is dealer serviced and maintained very well. That said, so the cost of repairs overall is very low. I do need to have the horn fixed but considering the age of the car it is to be expected. As a dealer once told me an engine is cheaper than a new car. I love my car and have no plans to get rid of it.
Hey guys. I have this same engine in my 2004 LS430. At the 180k mile major service you will want to add the valve cover leak repair, do both sides. Also, make sure you do the cam seals. I declined to do them at 180k and ended up having to redo the entire service basically because they started leaking by 195k. The leak would have been fine but it went onto the hot manifold and started burning and smelling bad. Eventually you could see smoke coming from the engine from this small leak, so I was forced to do it. This is a major service where the engine is partially disassembled. Timing belt and water pump is done at same time. We also added the VVT-i cam gears (different from the cam seals) at this time because that also requires the engine to be disassembled and better to just pay for this labor cost once. My radiator had to be replaced at this time as well. Also I think we did the iridium spark plugs and the transmission gasket had to be resealed as well so we did a drain and fill too. If you plan on keeping the car it will be about $3500 (USD) at an independent shop for this work and will take several days to a week. Alternatively, sell the car and move on before it hits 180k and let someone else handle the more major repairs which are coming soon. Good luck!
On the positive side, the car hasn’t required any more major repairs since the 195k service and I am at 211k now. If I knew then what I know now I may have dumped it before the 180k mile service.
Wow - thank you so much for info. Now you present us with a huge choice. Definitely the mechanic told us about some of the things that need to be done (and that you've included), and we know it's time for the timing belt replacement. Thankfully, the radiator is something done by the previous owner in the last 5-7 years. Will keep you posted!
SC430 timing belt and water pump at the independent shop is $1400-$1600. My shop has a former Lexus technician. Plenty of SC430 with 200k-300k+ miles including mine at 207k and zero leaks
