Leyland National single decker buses are like Marmite, you either love them or hate them. But they have without doubt become a classic design of single-deck transportation since their introduction to service in 1972 (not to mention providing the basis for the rail-bound version, aka Class 142 DMU 'Pacers'!)
On Sunday 30th September 2012, the North West Museum of Road Transport (based at the old Hall Street Bus Depot in St Helens, Merseyside) held a one day event to mark the 40th anniversary of their introduction to service, with no less than ten Leyland Nationals; on show (both based at the museum, and a few visitors), and also being out and about giving free rides around the St Helens area.
Buses featured in this video:
1) MTL North 6140 (XLV140W)
2) Routemaster Buses Leyland National 2 WBW735X
3) Crosville Leyland National SNL808 (WFM808L)
4) Western National 2813 (HTA844N)
5) Leyland National B360LOY (formerly owned by easydriveways.com)
6) Leyland National Widnes Corporation 1 (RTC645L)
7) Leyland National 43 0JD868R (Chase livery)
8) John Fishwick & Sons 24 (XCW55R)
9) Leyland National LN19 (BYW432V) - visitor
10) Leyland National EX30 ( TXJ507K) - visitor
All footage filmed in and around the museum, and also from Widnes Corporation 1 during the St Helens Hall Street to Lea Green station cavalcade.

Was there on the day. What a cracking turnout of Nationals. Well ahead of their time and still looking good.

And to think that 2022, will mark 50 years since they went into traffic. Wow! Thanks for commenting Roy.

@@DavidHennessey1984 David, loved the video, shot some of my own, I think its still on a memory card somewhere. I see the same museum is quoting 1st of May 2022 for National 50. I for one will return, it was a great day out.

used to travel to school in early 90's on these beasts! funny how we never had a care in the world to the fumes they spewed! and the lorries on the way to the bus stop spewing thick blue exhaust fumes! back then instinct made me hold my breath! crazy times.....and missed times

thanks for this, anyone who was around in the late 70s or early 80s will recognise the clatter and whine of a 510 National, even if they don't have a clue what it is. Southdown had loads of them in the late 70s

Don't know much about buses but I remember this from being a child in the 90's and I never forget how loud they were especially the one with the Air con pod. On a quiet night you could hear it miles away.

I drove them often on Kirkcaldy Town service routes, HSC 101T to HSC 109T (FPN 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8 & 9)

I enjoyed the video and remember that whine and that clatter I don't think anything else sounds like it. I used to get on one with my mum when I were 6 or 7 to go my nans. And it used to roar past but it could shift too like faster than them new double deckers you get.. Don't know the engine but it sounded deeper.

These used to run on a route near me. Always really smokey. And if you sat right at the back used to make you feel a bit sea sick as it was like a Roller Coaster ride.

+Hategplus crevis Glad to see this brought back memories for you. Yes, they were smoky, noisy and rackety, but they're a long lasting icon of British road transportation. What routes did they run on near you anyway? These were the school buses of my youth; from growing up in the early 1990's, to leaving school in 2000, when these were taken off the books in St Helens... Many thanks for commenting!

The route was the 306 from Borehamwood to Watford Hertfordshire. Can't remember what year they stopped running. Must have been during the 80's.

Good old 510's, how they got away with the emissions I've no idea though, but a iconic bus no longer in service 😣

At least there are still a lot of examples in operation around the country, thanks to the various owners and/or volunteers that keep them going... Thanks Mark!

Alas these days the dreadful buses like Darts are not upto scratch compared to The National. OK it was noisy but it was a real workhorse and kept going. The new ones of today have no strength and I wonder how many Darts or their counterparts will see it to 30 or 40 years time. I miss the noise, the smell of diesel and the rattle it was all part of the experience.
