There's no one-solution-fixes-all answer to liquid damage. But today I'll show you where you can start, and what you can try right after a disaster that may save your device.
I recommend talking to a professional about liquid damage repair in a mission-critical situation, but if that's not an option, knowing what you can and can't do at a DIY level is the next-best thing.

Adamant IT Great tutorial and wisdom! Please read this through and respond! I’m desperate for answers! Thanks. (And I tried to be as specific as I can) Your video I followed: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-0oFgu5WwNDU.html My MacBook Problem Summary & Background Info: Hey, my MacBook Air A1466 (2017) is having problems; the fan is always on full blast, and is very slow/laggy, when on(Limp Mode). And I accidentally dripped some water near the top of the trackpad when I first damaged it. I opened it up and inspected the ribbons, I found the sensor ribbon and the ends were damaged. There was some sort of scummy and burnt-like residue on the ribbon and the pins from the connector. One factor you should take into account is the touch/move on the trackpad was still fully functional, and the only exception was the fan is always on full blast and slow processing on the cpu. I am 100% sure it is not a motherboard/logic board problem, as the Mac is 100% functional. Testing: So then I did some testing with the Mac(cuz I don’t have replacement trackpad, and I’ve already tried cleaning), I wanted to see if I disconnected the ribbon (trackpad), maybe the fan would stop going full blast and the Mac would get faster(good as new speed). But when I restarted the Mac and disconnected the ribbon immediately after, the touch/move stop working and the fan was still on full blast, while the laptop was very slow. Also the keyboard wasn’t working either. FOLLOW UP QUESTIONS: If I disconnected the ribbon for the track pad, will the MacBook performance be revived? Or does the MacBook require a fully functional and good condition trackpad to revive its performance? Because what you did in the video was replacing the trackpad, which apparently fixed the “Limp Mode” problem including the fan speed problem. And is the only problem 100% the trackpad, taking into account these results and info I gave you? I subbed & liked.👍🏻

Hi. I managed to spill a full glass of sparkling water (quite a lot of sodium content) over my yoga c940. This was devasting since I'm only 18 and I don't have that much money. I quickly shut down my laptop and dried it out. The next day I tried turning it on but to no avail, the keyboard lit up for a split second but then it was completely dead. I thought it was done for but I found your video. I dissembled everything and when I removed the cooling system I saw a huge spot of corrosion and damage. I used your trick with rubbing alcohol, cleaning everything throughout and made sure everything was dry. I honestly had no hopes but to my biggest surprise it actually turned on and everything was working perfectly. This video saved my laptop and to that, I'm really grateful! Great content, keep it up.

Much of corrosion is actually caused by current causing electrolysis. Step 1 should always be to remove the battery (when it is user-accessible, like in this example). That way when they get to step 2 (bringing it to you), there's less corrosion for you to deal with.

"First thing I would advice doing is get your device to someone who knows what they're doing". Then the zeroth thing you should do is to unplug the power and remove the battery. Do it immediately, no hesitation. If your device has a non-removable battery, then take it to someone who knows what they're doing right away, and run, don't walk. Or open it and disconnect the internal battery yourself, before you go any further. Water and electronics is not a great combination. Water, electronics and power is a disastrous combination. Unplugging all power will buy you a significant amount of time. (But still, don't tarry overlong.)

The -1 thing you should do is run regular, automated backups. If the idea of dumping a glass of water into your computer makes you nervous at all (outside of any hardware costs) then you're doing something wrong.

Another valuable lesson. As soon as it happens, remove power and battery. Don't attempt to switch it on until you've followed the advice in this video. So many people will try and switch it on only to see a flash or something and then no taco so don't do it.

The very first thing you should do is DISCONNECT POWER, and press the power button for 5-10 seconds to HARD SHUTDOWN the power, then REMOVE and/or DISCONNECT the BATTERY. Its critical to stop any posibility of any shorts happening. After that you can deal with trying to dry it out.

This video is very informational. I applied the DIY brush + isopropyl alcohol technique to an old water damaged Logitech G502 Proteous Core mouse (original model) where the DPI Shift (the larger left side button) would register itself pressed on boot and blocked things from being clicked in Windows. Clicking it would reset it, but it got annoying to do; the mouse was otherwise working fine. I opened it up to find the three side buttons are part of a daughterboard connected by a ribbon cable. The end of the cable had some schmutz on it. I brushed it and the port with isopropyl alcohol, then reversed the ends. It seems to have fixed it and this whole process was very quick. Although I already have a new mouse, the Razer Viper, the new G502 Hero model would've cost $46.99 if I had gone with that, so now I can happily use the old G502 on another PC or give it away. Thank you!

After drying and cleaning motherboard, I strip it from any plastic(not plastic connectors/sockets they will be fine), battery, covers and bake it in the oven at 90c for 30min to get rid of any moister. Especially from underneath CPU's and GPU's. I monitor the temp. with thermocouple for correct temp reading. Starting with cold oven to avoid any thermal shock. It's completely safe if you carefully monitor the temperature. This is BGA rework/soldering 101. This will guarantee you, that all moister is gone. I had situation when laptop was back after heavy liquid damage repair, dead. Cpu underneath was shorted by corrosion after rinsing with IPA.

14:40 - Several synthetic glues and materials are actually dissolved by isopropanol, and that's what was happening there with the foam. I would generally suggest starting with (95%+) ethanol. Then switch to isopropanol or ethyl acetate, and finally to acetone (if you really need to remove something and you're absolutely sure the underlying material can take it). Also worth mentioning (because the "WD" stands for "water displacer" and some people might think it would work here), some natural rubbers are dissolved by kerosene / Stoddard solvent, which are two ingredients of WD-40, so don't spray it into any rubber gaskets / o-rings or you can just end up with a lot of semi-liquid sticky goo. When in doubt, spray a bit onto a cotton bud and try it before spraying the thing directly.

.People used to drop sugary drinks down the back of old portable TVs. In the late 60s, I was working in a shop, we'd pull the chassis and wash it with a garden hose and brush trying to avoid the flyback. Then leave them in the sun all day and hang them by a rope to dry overnight. Usually, a few tubes were cracked by the liquid hitting them. Most times, after they dried and the cracked tubes were replaced they worked. It was the only way to get that sugary goo off of them. Electronics was so much more fun back then.

Please consider keeping a vacuum cleaner nearby or even better brush/blow the dust outside the window/door for your own health and the good of your shop - you brushed off the dust in the fan right over your workspace (and quite possibly on your clothes too) which is something I personally never do, even if means taking a walk to the front door which is a good 20m away from my table, since there are no windows around. I have a colleague who does the same thing: no regard for his lungs and the lungs of others. Just blows dust all over the joint and never cleans his worktop - treats the customer's stuff like trash...I thankfully no longer share the same room with him :))

My last liquid damage adventure was a glass of water tipped over onto the table where my laptop sat, without me noticing it had happened. I think my poor little dell was sitting in a 1/2 inch pool for 5 minutes before I twigged and ran to disconnect it. It continued to run as I lifted it from the table and watched water pour out of the vents, but then there was a protracted groan and the sound of thousands of cascading shorts. I rushed the machine outside as I was concerned about the built-in battery shorting, because no one likes a lithium fire, and the display flashed random blocks of black and white while the laptop continued to make horrible noises. It sounded like it was suffering, and it was loud - think shorting electronics and coil whine at 70 decibels. I managed to shut it off, and after it was drained, opened, and dried it never turned on again. Some of the hardware survived - I think I could get a couple of dollars for the display - but the ssd kicked the bucket, sadly and somewhat surprisingly. So yeah, RIP little dell.

If your ever working on a hard drive I would recommend crystal disk info. Crystal disk info is a great free tool that can be used on windows computers that shows the health of the hdd by using the S.M.A.R.T data which is super accurate because it’s what the hard drive is reporting. It even shows the power cycles and how many hours is on the hard drive.

I then dried up as much liquid off the actual keyboard as possible. I removed memory and I think the disk drive which was accessible from the bottom.of the laptop. I then put in a cupboard wrapped in a towel. 4 days later I plugged it all back together and switched it on....👍

Although this is an old video, I have one suggestion on the data part: take a byte dump first, before changing all the permissions stuff. Tools like dd on Linux or windd on windows can do that easily. This ensures you have a good snapshot of all existing data, whether the filesystem is corrupted or not. File permission is your least concern, as long as the data is on the drive and has been preserved in a dumped image file. Then you can use all kinds of tools you like to view or edit to a COPY of the image. Knowing there always is a backup.

Just immediately pop it in a low oven for several hours to easily steam excess moisture out. Works like a charm. If you have a large enough dehydrater (for making beef jerky or dried fruit) you can leave the laptop in that for up to a day. And if you’re wondering, no I’m NOT serious.

If the liquid isn't plain water, letting it dry isn't enough. The liquid itself will be an electrolyte, and if it contacts 2 dissimilar metals, uh oh. The 2 dissimilar metals could be solder and copper.

Cleaning out electronics that had seen water, is actually the first and most basic thing you need to do, because corrosion is mostly always conductive, so powering on a device that had water damage is a bad idea, if it seen water, remove all the power sources, and start cleaning it up with alcohol, my sister killed her 3ds because it had liquid spilled on it, and she tried to charge the device killing it in the proces, she didn't told me that she tried to charge it, but i could see it on the logic board, and it whas completely dead, so never charge water damaged devices!

Firstly remove the battery. That is one well used keyboard. Guessing water spillage is easier to sort out, but sugary stuff should be cleaned with water, sounds bonkers to wash the board in the sink. Hmm my sister had a sound system that made a screaming sound, they type that had a tape deck and record player radio combined. She knew I was a bit of goof ball, in 70's a bit weird with electronics, told me about it but told me not fix it ... Well nobody home I rescued it, apparently some sort of girly product got spilled, maybe hair product I don't know, but back then I just cleaned the board with water and used her hairdryer, kept smug never heard a complaint

Most HD companies will not allow any removal of boards. If you have a failed board, you can sometimes put a board with the same BIOS on it. It will work from time to time. Use to work WDC tech support, and we did that from time to time to get a drive working again.

With corrosion on capacitors on the drive, it is likely to fail as the corrosion is still eating its way through the copper traces underneath the parts, unless you flux it and ultrasonic it, the risk of later failure is high. I’ve done several videos fixing liquid damaged laptops.
@Adamant_IT
@Adamant_IT 4 года назад
In my experience, if it works after this basic clean up, you're done. Only times I've had a laptop come back into the shop after this method was when there was something else not working that I missed - but over all, not see any later failure. Ironically, most of the time when a laptop comes back in, it's because the customer spilt something on it again 🙄 If the laptop's still got issues after a basic clean up, then yes, absolutely time for ultrasonic, and then if still nothing, reflow/repair. But more often than not it's overkill.

That's my assessment of it. There's obviously a time and a place where static prevention is critically important, but having been down this kind of repair work for years - bench work that is, not lab stuff - I've yet to encounter any kind of static damage to PC or laptop components. That being said, I'm sure there's people who work in specific fields, places, or on certain devices, who would say otherwise. So I'm not saying that static damage doesn't exist. But yea, if you're in the UK and you're fixing a laptop or a PC, you'll be fine without anti-static.

You can use HDD Regenerator for hdd that are filled with bads and are not working ok. It will not make the hdds new but you have higher chances to recover data after you “healed” them. It is a long process but it maybe worth. Play with few hard drives that you have with bad zones and see how is best. Usually first scan is prescan without resolving bads just to identify them- works faster second just healing the bad zones. Manually regenerating sectors doesnt do much from my experience.

You can easily access the hard drive offline without changing the ACLs (which you will have to do if you just use Windows to get access to it). Avoiding this is a good idea, since it requires writes (many of them) to the customer's disk. Something like Runtime's GetDataback will access the drive without altering file ACLs. Alternatively you could use a usb key Puppy Linux distro to mount the NTFS partition and get the data off that way. But if the disk is in as good shape as yours, I'd just give the customer another disk and clone the original using Macrium Reflect - no OS reinstall needed. Get the customer's data off first though, then if the drive's still good, try cloning it. In any case, as you say, replace the disk, since disk is cheap and data is valuable.

Distilled water is safe to use to clean electronics as it has no mineral content. Water itself does not conduct electricity as it is an isolator, but the contaminants in water will allow electricity to jump from point to point causing a short.. Distilled water is safe to use when no IPA is available. Do not buy any other kind of water for this purpose, nothing flavored, nothing that has been fortified with vitamins, only plain distilled water works like this. Also do not submerge or soak your electronics in distilled water because you are again asking for trouble. Use it to clean or rinse (not hard drives!), and dry thoroughly before powering up. :)

Is technical grade isopropyl alcohol safe to use on electronics? I read it's the lowest quality and not good for your skin.
@Adamant_IT
@Adamant_IT 4 года назад
Yup, it's non-conductive, you can use it on live electronics no problem. It's not corrosive, but it will dry your skin out with repeat use. Moisturising hand wash will fix that. It's certainly not dangerous.

My OPINION from my EXPERIENCE ... the HDD had NO PHYSICAL DAMAGE.... but if you ran CHKDSK it would have booted properly.. However, disks are INEXPENSIVE... when I started with computers... a 20 MB drive was the size of a washing-machine and at $20,000..lol

What cleaning solution you use?

Isopropyl Alcohol is the best. For plastics and stuff, window cleaner, but alcohol for circuits.

Actually step one after spilling liquid onto a laptop etc is: Don't try and power it back on, doing so will just cause short after short as the liquid travels through the device, further and possibly deeper, causing more and more damage.

First piece of advice should be DO NOT TRY TO TURN IT ON AGAIN, until you iether open itt and do what was done here or take to someone who knows what they are doing

Weird to think some people wouldn't have rubbing alcohol on hand but then again I forget not everyone is a stoner and has pipes and bongs to clean.

water damaged laptop it is a good idea to change keyboard and clean cables and ribbon connection or change them so the oxidation don't return...

If they keyboard is damaged and not too hard to replace, sure. If it's a tough keyboard to replace, I'd wait and see if it's an actual problem.

I really hope that "upgrade" to win 10 was consentual I would hate if someone did that without asking first (I'm sure you asked and got permission as you seem to be one of the good repair shops)
@Adamant_IT
@Adamant_IT 4 года назад
I do recommend Win 10 to my customers, as it's the most practical system to be running (in terms of support etc) but yes, I always check with them first.

Good move with the SDD - how about the RAM? looked like only one 4GB SO DIMM
@Adamant_IT
@Adamant_IT 4 года назад
You can survive on 4GB of RAM on a system for basic internet browsing, especially with an SSD to make the system 'feel fast'. It's not ideal, but of course it's a matter of how much money you want to spend.
@Kosmonooit
@Kosmonooit 4 года назад
@@Adamant_IT Sure but Win 10 is a dog on 4GB in my experience, RAM is relatively cheap with brands like Liteon etc around. Do you go with certain brands for RAM and SDD's? and cheers for the tip on Mac reading an Windows volume read only, having to change rights first is tedious. All I need now is a Mac, maybe that should be an excuse for getting one.
@Adamant_IT
@Adamant_IT 4 года назад
True true. RAM I generally shop by price, provided it's got a brand name on it like Crucial or Corsair. SSDs, cheap option is Crucial BX500 (at the moment) and fancy option is Crucial P1 or Intel 660p. I generally don't lean toward the super quick stuff like Samsung because it's rarely worth the cost.
