Love that you emphasize when there is a measurable but not a perceiveable difference. These days we sometimes get to hooked up on numbers.

Tim and Steve are heroes. They're never hyping anything up unless it is warranted and are always looking out for the consumers. Looking at most other tech channels makes you feel only hyped for a product/feel bad for not having that product, those videos act like advertisements. Hardware Unboxed and Monitors Unboxed videos on the other hand feel like cold, hard analysis of the products and very fair conclusions in the end which actually make sense. They're the antidote to the unhealthy consumerism that most companies desire and then some.
@MaxBaltzer
@MaxBaltzer Год назад
I used to do that, like pay extra for a few more FPS for a RAM kit for example, where I would need to be a cyborg to actually notice the difference if there was actually any. Nowadays I really look for the best bang for the buck and call it a day. Plus, I don't even have time to game properly anymore.

You have to be careful with that as well, however. Each human is different. What you might not see or care about could well be visible for someone else. There even may be a consensus that something is "better" than something else, but total disagreement on by how much.

The red tinge in the black of the alienware monitor in bright light conditions is NOT a bad anti reflective coating, but the Quantum Dots! Because they don't preserve the polarization of light, they have to be infront of the polarization layer, which normally surpressed reflection of environmental light. The tinge is red, because the quantum dots (as any fluorescent material) can only emit light at lower (redder) frequencies than they absorb.
@givemeanameman1
@givemeanameman1 Год назад
Some materials can release at a higher frequency then they absorb by having the electron pushed up two layers by absorbing two photons instead of one before re-emitting.
@brandenc3860
@brandenc3860 Год назад
Samsung also fixed this issue on the 2023 tv’s which would lead me to believe that it isn’t the quantum dots. They specifically mentioned making changes to their polarization layer and coatings to reduce any glare from ambient light

You don't buy OLED to use it in a lit room or during daytime. OLEDs (TVs included) excel at NIGHT with lights dimmed or off. I have tons of OLED devices and they are awesome at night, not so much during the day, however still more than fine here. I prefer QD-OLED myself. 3rd gen WOLED is good as well tho. But 1st + 2nd gen WOLED clearly is beaten by QD-OLED.

It wasn't on the screen there was a little tiny smudge in the rear white plastic. A non issue for me so grabbed it. It's really nice. Think the height should be fine for my desk. My CRT monitors on the other hand use a couple books to get them up to a nice level. Funny enough I have been solely gaming on the CRT setup because the late model high end ones are unmatched by LCD. Never even seen a ultrawide, hows it feel after a couple days of use?

Nice review. I bought the Alienware AW3423DWF three weeks ago and I'm so far absolutely happy and blown away by this monitor. Regarding the use for office work, I set the windows size for text to 150% and there are no issues for me and I'm also very sensitive to it, which was my most "fear" about the QD-OLED. And once getting the 21:9 gaming experience, I don't want to miss it, too. The LG seems to be a very good monitor, as well. It's good to see that there are more options out there.

@Monitors Unboxed I saw in another video that hooking up the LG on HMDI 2.1 and running 12bit increased the colors pop/vibrance and noticeably decreased input lag /latency. Did you test this? HMDI 2.1 has much more bandwidth vs display port so does make sense that HDMI performs better (32 vs 48 GBps).

the glossy screen on the 3423dw is what makes it the choice for me. I was looking at a few other IPS ultrawide screens, including used 3420DW, but the matte finish isn't what i like. I had a glossy samsung 2560x1440 monitor that I still use as a 2nd monitor that I just love. the colours are just so vibrant and I feel the picture is more crisp than my much newer LG ultrawide. I have my PC in my room and I have a blackout curtain.
@s1aver1
@s1aver1 Год назад
The coating on the DW/DWF it's the issue the issue is the lack of a polarizer, as QD-OLED TVs with a glossy coat also raise black in bright rooms. With that said if you close the blinds the benefits of a lack of polarizer out way the disadvantages as it allows the display to be brighter, and fewer layers means the image is closer to the surface of the & less internal reflections.

Real shame too, because it certainly felt like the hardware GSYNC module in the DW provided *_the smoothest_* VRR experience I've had in many years. This was really apparent in Elden Ring which still has stuttering problems on PC - it felt much smoother on the DW, despite stuttering just as much (according to MSI AB graphs)

Input lag? DWF is lower than DW actually but both are incredibly low. I doubt you can feel anything. The LG OLED is almost the same as DW..

Why do you think that Input Lag on the Gsync DW is so slow compared to the Freesync DWF version??/

The motion blur tests focus on results at the maximum refresh rates, which is helpful for competitive shooters, where you're likely to adjust settings to keep your min framerate above the max refresh rate supported. However, for immersive games where we're likely to use ultra settings, and even RayTracing + DLDSR, the framerates drop down to the sub-100 range, even with a 4090. This changes the equation for motion blur, and is still an important scenario. I'd love it if MU could introduce motion blur comparisons for this situation, where refresh rate benefits are limited by framerate.

Fan noise is my primary complaint on the aw3423dw, but gamma flicker is a close second. Flicker is usually not noticeable at higher frame rates, but for frame rate locked titles (like elden ring) it is distracting.

Checked with one of the local retailers here. Although they provide "care" packages (for a price) as ad on while buying the monitor, even that doesn't cover burn-in!!!

Hey Tim, I wonder if you would look at the AOC Q24G2 and the Philips 24M1N5500Z, these are premium 24" 1440p panels, finally the size I want with all the tech as the 27" ones. Problem is, at least in the US there are no stores that have them, looks like import only, at least for now.

@monitors unboxed I have recently purchased 2 of these monitors (AW3423DWF), and I’m bit disappointed. The first one I got seemed faulty booted the monitor up and instantly on blacks and dark grey's it was like random pixels were flashing red/green/blue. The second one I have got has lasted maybe 1 month and now has started doing the same. Have you any experience to what may cause this? Many thanks

Hi monitors unboxed. After watching your previous review in the AW34DWF, I took the plunge and it is by far the best display I have ever used. Thank you for your great review! The only problem o have with it, is that there seems to be some image retention after watching and playing quite a bit of 16:9 content consistently. Mainly RU-vid and Valorant. There’s burn in at the edges of the edges of of the content itself where it borders the black bars. Dell have said they are going to replace it, but I’m just wondering, is this a normal thing? I’m worried about the same thing happening again.
@mattg768
@mattg768 Год назад
It's oled so yes it's normal, I've burnt in a few monitors already. You either have to get a good warranty or have deep pockets because this will happen again. You can try and reduce the risk but it will still always be a risk. People always say its a non issue till it happens to them. You have to remember burn in has been a problem since plasma tech came out years ago, these companies cannot come up with a solution to prevent it and I doubt they ever will. Yes the picture is the best but a light that burns twice as bright only lasts half the time. I have oled now but I don't use it I went back to micro led with dimming zones because I worried about burn in all the time and it's happened on 2 monitors since this alienware first released so I gave up.

My OLED phone (Samsung OLED Panel) has trouble with response time and thus smearing when scrolling white text on completely black background. The background starts bleeding into the white text while scrolling as the pixels don't turn on fast enough. Is this a problem with the desktop OLEDs as well?

Hey guys, great review! Got a correction/omission for you, although the DWF won't support 120 Hz due to HDMI limitations, it does support scaling a 4K60 signsl when console mode is enabled. You can find this information in the user guide under the supported resolutions when console mode is activated, cheers.

I know, I might not be the main group this channel is catered for but I'd love an overview for Monitors mainly for office work that is comfortable on your eyes for 10h+ per day. I care mostly for color accuracy besides that. Refresh rate is for that reason more or less negligible but sometimes I like to play a game. so anything from 60-144 is completely fine. If you would make a ranking anytime soon with those oled options I would be very happy...

Thanks for a great in depth comparison video. Definitely leaning towards the LG for my needs. Warranty though 😑 Right now its available only via LG Store in Europe. Once other vendors start selling it perhaps they will offer better warranties. Also, I heard ASUS and Acer are going to release displays based on the same panel so might be worth waiting for those.
