many thanks for this great video, it just showed what I wanted to see, and direct compariaon, not only talking and talking but really showing it live, thank you for that!! will go fot Theta S!
I have the LG and I'm taking it apart right now. I'm going to use thicker double sided tape between the lens mount bracket and the len's circuit board. In stock form, the double sided tape is paper thin, I'm going to put in 1mm thick tape in hopes of pushing the lenses outward so they don't get the camera body in the picture, which is annoying! I've already used a dremel and sanding drum bit to shave the angular section directly under the lens, but it still slightly gets it in the shot. I've seen in other LG360 videos and happening with mine, it's only the back lens that gets the camera body in the shot. hmmm
Thanks for the comparison on these great cameras. I initially bought the LG due to the great price, I wasn't too fussed about the video specs as I mainly bought this for still photography. Sadly, for me the picture quality wasn't good enough, so eventually bought the Ricoh Theta S. I love the Ricoh and I think the picture quality is so much better, however, I preferred the LG'S phone app, as I find the Ricoh one to be a lot more buggy, have had numerous crashes on this app. Also, I prefer the LG case as it protects the camera so much more. I also noticed that the lg tends to blow out the highlights too, great cam for the price, but certainly go for the theta s if you can afford it.
Excelent video! Could you please help? I don't know why when I upload my ricoh theta 360 videos on facebook they look so bad just like youtube 144p videos. I dont know what to do because when I watch the videos in my phone or computer they are HD, but once I've uploaled them look awful!
Thanks for the video. I started with Ricoh Theta S & took it back to Japan on holidays. I am interested in the Tiny Planet concept, but am looking at putting my Theta on a drone. Keep the tutorials coming. In the NT so this is "frontier country" Cheers
Despite the higher resolution of other cameras, the result obtained with Theta S is incredible. Splices, colors, details. Great job Ricoh. 2017 is the year of the 360 cameras gain market and media.
Thanks for the helpful video! I Haf just gone back and forth on t his on Amazon. I think since I hope to get a lot of use out of it that I will go for the theta S, and make sure I get a silicone case for it, which is easily found on Amazon. the video and pictures were quite trippy in this format, but still a very well done demo of both cameras!
Very nice review, but what I have found is with all 360 camera's they only really shine when used for what they were designed for....in a "VR" setup or Google Carboard.
Im a Theta owner , and looking to buy the Insta360 Air. cause I liked the video result of the Insta360 Nano and the cost of course. but I am waiting for your review about it once you have it. Thanks
Hi Ben, thanks for the video. After watching your video, base on the price range i decided to buy the LG360. The question I've is, must the pictures and videos upload to youtube or google photo for viewing with the 360 pan around capability? What if I email or txt pic/video to friends smart phone/computer, do they need to download any app to see with the 360 pan/zone effect. Thank you.
LIFE in 360 Only after downloading a 360 viewer app or viewing online trough Google Maps or Google street app. Google street free to download and uses your onboard camera to take 360 photos and stich them together.
Thanks a lot! Honestly i never really record audio through my 360 cameras.. i usually use a separate sound device attached to a lapel when i'm doing 'talking to camera' work like you see here. But the LG has spatial audio which i think puts it ahead of the Ricoh.
hello sir, i am from Kerala, India... I want to know how to shoot videos like this. I have a 360 camera, but i don't know how to shoot videos like that... could you please help me???
I bough the Ricoh Theta S to work with my IPhone 7 plus and I'm returning it to the store two days later. The app to connect the iPhone to the camera is absolutely awful. You can easily join the camera to the phone via wifi but the app refuses to acknowledge the connection. Out of 30 attempts I was able to hook up twice. I have plenty of wireless devices (video doorbells, cameras, Phillips hue, etc) so I know I know the problem isn't on my end. If you go to the iOS App Store and look up the Ricoh Theta S app you'll see that a lot of folks are having similar issues. Sad to have to return the camera but it's useless.
MerlynNY you are quite literally the only person I've heard say that. Mine connects every single time. I know technology can be very frustrating, but that doesn't mean the camera is completely useless. It means there's something not working with YOUR setup of it.
I wish I could agree with you. The wifi setup is very simplistic. Turn on the camera, click the wifi button. Go to your phone's wifi settings and find the camera. Enter the password and turn on the app. Hard to go wrong there. Like I said, go to the IOS app store and look at the reviews of the Ricoh Theta S app . 2 stars and a bunch of folks all complaining about the same issue. Maybe the issue isn't so much with my setup but only effects a smaller group of people.
I get hundreds of questions a day about 360 cameras, and like i said i've never encountered this before. Since you already returned your camera, i think it's pointless for me to try and get to the bottom of your problem anyway. I don't work for Ricoh, i'm just a guy on RU-vid sharing his knowledge with the world. Sorry!
Haven't returned it yet. I didn't let my frustration get the best of me. Ricoh Tech support gave a few suggestions (didn't work unfortunately) so I'll give them a few more tries. Didn't mean to imply that you needed to solve my problems (sorry). I truly do like this camera and would like to add it to my collection. Just hard to do that when something so simple as connecting should work. Thanks for taking the time to reply. I do enjoy your videos and did subscribe.
Conclusion: you`ve made me change my mind a bit, I`m LG 360Cam owner and I would have bought a Theta S if it was just a bit more expensive than LG (when I bought the LG it was $199) Now I`m just waiting for a true 4K or 6K 360 camera under $500. Ben, you forgot to mention the memory availability on both devices :)
There's a million more things i could have mentioned, but the image quality is the most important issue in my opinion. Since i'm making these videos for free, and i have a million and one other things to do, i don't have time to sit down and script every possible feature unfortunately. Instead it was more improvised and i listed the most important issues that first came to mind. Anyway the Theta is 8GB and the LG has an interchangeable micro SD port :)
The LG 360 camera is a relic in hardware years, but its photos are still being uploaded on Google Maps despite far better cameras that came out in 2018. In the past there were a lot of (shill) reviews blindly praising the LG cam, claiming it's better than Ricoh Theta. While the LG may boast of higher resolution video, but to my eye, it's completely useless for photos. Take these for example: goo.gl/qsmeiM goo.gl/SkrKuk goo.gl/ERCSbM These pictures should show you pink fringes, excessive blurriness and noise. These problems should wean users off shooting 360 photos altogether, or persuade them to upgrade to a professional camera, such as Canon or Nikon fitted with fish-eye lens. If you click on any LG owners' profiles, you'll see them quitting at some point and switch to something better. A switch to Ricoh Theta or even Insta360 One is the simplest choice. The LG is cheap enough for you to acclimatise to the concept of 360 photo, but eventually you'd be fed up with the poor quality of your photos.
4:35 - I noticed that stitching problem (remember I commented on another video of yours) but in my case the desaturate/overexposure line appears only when I do the stitching through LG`s 360 Cam Windows software.
Hey! Yeah that was a typo.. regardless of which dual lens 360 camera you have, the final aspect ratio is always 2:1, meaning the height is half that of the width.
You're about $100 too high on the Theta S. I have the Theta S, The LG 360, and the Gear 360. Theta S is still my favorite because it stitches the best. Gave the LG to my sister. And use the Gear 360 to mount on my RC aircraft (the ball shape is the best for that application). Nice overview.
After watching i got the lg-360 cam. The idea is to record DnD sessions so all players are on camera and the 5.1 sound should help a lot, however in my tests the video auto shuts off after 20 minutes...not ideal in a 2 to 3 hour session lol. Have you found a way around this rather large limitation?
The Dave Stream hey- unfortunately I just don't use the LG that much because of it's limitations.. if you want to record super long videos then I'd definitely suggest investing in a more video friendly 360 camera like the Gear 360 👍
LIFE in 360 as I understood it the gear 360 is locked to samsung phones so I chose the lg360 based largely on this video as you mentioned it was the best for video
The Dave Stream yeah it's the best for video OF THESE TWO CAMERAS. But there are many other cameras out there and if you really want to focus on video in the future, I'd definitely consider upgrading when you can afford it. There are more 4k 360 cameras coming out soon that are compatible with iPhone too, like the Kodak Orbit360.
It will be a long time till i can afford to replace it (well justify replacing it at least), the camera is perfect for what i plan to use it for....just need to figure out how to change that strange 20 minute limit
I’m laughing at the part where he does the video stability, the clouds look like a T-Rex. I just bought my theta V so I’m going to open it and see wassup.
They are both crappy. I owned an LG360 and after 2 days of testing, I returned it. Such a ridiculous bad image quality .. even on 4k it looks like from one of the first camera phones. Just some real talk, I like the idea behind the 360° cameras and I will rebuy one when they are developed enough, but at the current time, every 360° camera takes crappy images.
1984lexani well I don't think I'm going to change your mind so I won't try.. but I totally disagree. I've shot some of my best photos ever on the Theta S that have really gotten me noticed as a 360!photographer, and for such early on in the technology, the LG over delivers on video quality for the $99 price bracket. Like I said in the video, you can't expect the quality of a red dragon on a $99 360 camera.
For sure you cant expect that, but I also tried the Theta and I DO expect more than that crappy image quality :( Just to be honest, the image quality sucks, full stop.
Well you are literally the only person i've ever heard of that has said that. Even professional Google street view 360 photographers praise the Ricoh for what it can achieve for it's price point. So that's your opinion, and mine is that it's awesome.
