How would you account for rtings reporting the C3 being 25-30% brighter in real scenes? And even their small window tests they report the C3 is at least 7%-15% brighter. They also claim the A80L doesn’t break 700 nits. While the C3 goes above 800 in a 2% window in HDR. That’s a 15% boost for small highlights. Of course, the shadow detail and upscaling is unmatched on the Sony. Context: I returned an A80L because it felt dim. And now have a C3.
@j.rfrazier1855
@j.rfrazier1855 8 месяцев назад
Doing the 2pt. Gain calibration in the Service Menu increases the brightness and makes it much more in line with the C3. You get the boost from increasing the Red and Green channel. When you calibrate the 2 pt. grayscale in the user menu, you have to reduce blue by several clicks - which reduces peak luminance.

A80L is definitely more bright than you need, had to give time to break the panel in. Also you can boost several settings if you just want to torch the screen. I have a Samsung 8K and a Sony Oled, the Sony is more than bright enough for anything you choose to watch with excellent details

@@tears2040 even with all brightness settings maxed, its not bright enough. And i dk if the 100 hours to get brighter thing is real or not and couldn’t chance it. The 2024 sony models should fix things. Brighter mid range oled, close to no blooming mini leds.

There has been some talk online about how the XR Clear Image somehow detects the original resolution "within" a 4K signal, which apparently helps with upscaling. As someone who has always preferred the upscaling on the internal apps but would rather use an external device for various reasons, I'd be interested in an in-depth analysis from someone who knows what they're talking about.

I had to turn off Gradation Preferred when watching Foundations ( show from AppleTV+) on my A80L 77 via Dolby Vision Bright. A lot of scenes in that show were shot with very a strong source light in the frame, and even more annoying is one of the character would have the lights behind them while another would not as they engage in dialog. With Gradation Preferred, people's faces in the foreground dimmed down (compared to None) to the point where I felt like they were underlit, while the lights in the back got even more blinding in contrast.

I have had an S90C for almost two weeks now and while I love the picture quality I am struggling with the motion settings. I have Picture Clarity set to Custom and I have tried judder reduction at 0, 1, and 2. At 0 there is too much judder for my liking, at 1 it's better there there us still occasional judder and at 2 I start to see soap opera effect in certain scenes. How much better with the C3 and A80L be in regards to this and is the Sony really that much better than the C3 for judder reduction? I'd hate to lose too much HDR brightness for no reason but I also don't know if I can get used to the S90C at 1 which is the most tolerable setting to my eye. Also would something like an Apple TV 4K help at all with this? I know that might help a bit with upscaling although I will be honest I don't find the upscaling of the S90C to be too much different from my old X900E, of course I sat 1.5 feet further from it than my same sized S90C.

Holy smokes Classy! It's amazing to see that the A80L is as bright as the C3 despite the window measurements being so different. Everyone thought that the A80L was the worst OLED in terms of brightness but it clearly is not and when Brian did videos, it looked really good to me and also looked identical to the C3 at Costco even though I couldn't get them into a single view together being 20 feet apart. I didn't look at it and say "oh wow, look how dim this TV is" which I did when I saw the S90C next to the X90L and the image displayed was ultra-bright and the S90C hit its ceiling at 50% while the X90L had no limit. Another channel did a review of the A80L and A80K and the image processing was different for sure showing more detail and a more natural image. So Sony has been busy with the A80L. I feel their marketing department failed in this regard because I could see it but I was also misled by the nit measurements.

Look at all the text in Gran Turismo (on the cars or billboards) or the game menu @10:05 (the word setting or photo mode) and you'll see the Sony is clearer. It's not like 1080p vs 4k difference in text which is huge but it's there and it's caught on camera and through RU-vid. I'd say it's about 300p from this distance. If this was a 83 inch and you're sitting 7 feet away, you can probably see clearly the text edges being blurry on the LG vs the Sony, the difference will probably be about 700-800p. Sonys have always had this advantage (they developed supersampling aka Reality Creation in 1998) and I always think LG will catch up but they never do. This year LG is skipping 2 generations for their processor and dialing it up from 9 to 11 so we'll see if the G4 is ok. But the G3 seemed really impressive in detail and my feeling has been that if the MLA panel can let more light out, then it stands to reason that it also must increase detail since less of the image is obscured by the panel - it's akin to removing a glass window between you and outdoors or switching to a clearer window. You get more light but you also see better... If that is true, then the C3 would benefit from a MLA panel in order to add that detail that LG has been trying to find for 10 years now... They are not going to beat Sony at their own game - they need to disrupt them and I think the MLA will do that. Speaking of disruption, I feel Sony is about to disrupt LG and Samsung with their new backlight for LEDs 😀

@@westibbs Actually, there are some reviewers who will record a TV individually under the same conditions and then post the results side-by-side and then you can see the difference and invariably the LG looks blurrier - I used to call them 1440p. Sharpness is a bit different but super resolution is supposed to be LG's answer to Reality Creation. Classy enabled it there I believe but briefly. I don't know if it can sharpen stone textures, bricks, grass, hair and letters the way that Reality Creation can. Do you know if there's a video that compares Super Resolution to Reality Creation? I've alway wondered about how it works but no one has done a deep dive into those features to compare them. If it's just a matter of turning on a setting, then LG are just dim to be leaving their TVs in its native format. It's like playing a video game on a 4090 at 4k native @40 fps while the guy next to you is running it on a 4080 @120 fps with frame-gen and DLSS 3.5 quality. Well, turn on frame gen and DLSS 3.5 and run it at @160fps...

@@westibbs LG cares about creator intent - well if they did, their TVs would have had better OOTB settings in the past. They have improved lately but they were way off in the past and required calibration and I think Classy said that the C3 needs it IIRC (again, I could be wrong). I don't have LG or Sony side-by-side to compare them and you could be right but in others' videos the LG was lacking in detail as it clearly does here and that becomes more pronounced the larger the panel and the closer you get to the TV as the reverse is true also - the further you move back, the more they look alike just like 1080p is identical to 4k if you move far away (10-12 ft) for most panels. I think LGs are great displays and they have gotten closer to Sony over the years but there are still small differences and areas where each excels as Classy has shown. For instance, the Sony only has 2 HDMI 2.1 inputs (one shared with the eArc which is the main issue) which is quite egregious in 2023.

@@techsamurai11I'm assuming this is due to Sony's processing. As mentioned in this video, even with settings off it seems like the TV still does apply some processing. I'm assuming this is also why Sony TVs have a slower response time than LG TVs. I think if you game the LG is better, and if you watch more movie content, then the Sony is better
@techsamurai11
@techsamurai11 7 месяцев назад
@@jessep5280 The TV's response time is a very small part of gaming - the game itself has lag as do the wireless controllers (2-5ms).

When you put the settings on each television, I noticed that the A80L's brightness tab was set to max while the C3 was set to 80 percent. There is a 20 percent difference between the two sets in favor of the C3. Contrast was also set to max on the A80L. I believe that the C3 was dropped down to show the Sony in a more positive light. Now on rtings website the A80L is brighter than the C3 in the 25% and 50% window sizes, but on all other window sizes, the C3 was brighter.

@ClassyTechCalibrations 7 месяцев назад
@@TechTripping4728 you don't know what you are saying. Going from 80 to 100 on the LG makes a very minor difference and neither is at max brightness in SDR. SDR shouldn't be at max brightness, they are matched. In HDR they are max brightness. In SDR if you max brightness on WRGB OLEDs the lose color saturation from the white sub pixel, and SDR luminance should be set to your environment. The brightness comparisons are done in HDR where it matters, not SDR.
@TechTripping4728
@TechTripping4728 7 месяцев назад
@ClassyTechCalibrations Really! If you turn any wrgb oled to max in sdr you lose saturation? Don't the C3 and the A80L share the same panel type? Why is it that the panel brightness doesn't matter? Are you upset about what I said? If the brightness don't matter or make a difference, then set them to max. With my C2 and my wife's A80K, the brightness levels change in both settings 100 or 80 no matter if the set is in sdr or hdr. Now, bring not unto me a railing accusation. It is true that hdr has a higher nits rating but brightness is still brightness no matter what. The settings were how I said it! One was set to max and the other was set to 80. 1 + 1 = 1! (Boolean Algebra)
@ClassyTechCalibrations
@ClassyTechCalibrations 7 месяцев назад
@@TechTripping4728 Sony goes to 50 not 100, and the way brightness increases on Sony and LG are vastly different. Setting the LG to 0 doesn't give 0 nits. Increasing the slider 20 points does not give a 20% brightness increase. It doesn't work that way. All WRGB OLEDs wash out at higher brightness because of the white sub pixel. After 250-300 nits the color accuracy falters too much. In SDR there are very few bright rooms that need more than that. They were matched to equal brightness in SDR as that is how SDR is compared. HDR is completely different and has to always be at max brightness for highlights and uses PQ instead of gamma. You don't understand the difference between SDR and HDR and are trying to direct on how to compare or review. Both were not maxed out in SDR, as both still could be increased with peak brightness/luminance settings.
