Dude works like a champ. I'm even getting GPS in my house. I'll take it out tomorrow and give it a run through with Waze, Google Drive and my sat tester! Thank you very much, excellent job. You saved me a ton of cash and frustration!
I'm also curious if this worked. I heard raising the pins work really well at first, then GPS goes to shit.. like worse than it was originally.. let me know if this really holds up in the long run
This fix is not real. Basically opening up and closing the phone will have the same effect. The three pins he raises here are for the volume rocker. Any performance increase is coincidental.
Wow, has to be the easiest phone dismantle ever. Who would have thought that those 3 little tiny connections would cause you so much frustration. Thank you Tech James for showing us to fix
I tried this before and added a piece of photo paper for a shim. Seemed to work better (still not great) for a day. Went back and doubled up the photo paper last night. Now it finds me within seconds instead of minutes; it even found me inside where it didn't before. Google Maps stayed with me my entire 45 minute drive to work this morning. MapMyWalk followed me along a 1+ mile walk this morning when yesterday it couldn't get lock on me in the same downtown neighborhood (and I walked for 38 minutes!). I love my G5 again! Thank you! I'm so HAPPY! :D
Martin Nutbeem, I did have some trouble again. When I took the phone apart, I saw one of the three pins was smashed. I lifted it up a little higher and haven't had any problems since. (I believe it was smashed when I removed my case to change out the battery. I pushed right where those pins are to remove my case. Since fixing it again, I've turned my phone upside down before removing the case to avoid applying pressure to that area.)
After dealing with a non working gps the last couple months, I found this video and the instructions appear to have worked. Thank goodness, now I can waze, geocache and track my runs again.
Wow!!! It works. Thank you so much for posting this. Pretty crazy when you finally switch on the screen, startup your GPS tool and see all those satellites flashing up one-by-one even though I'm not even outside. I'm stunned that I managed to do it even though I'd say my dexterity is pretty bad. My recommendations: Patience & time. Don't hurry. You don't need to do it in 10 minutes like everyone claims. It took me almost an hour. Have the right tools: Decent micro-screwdriver set, guitar picks. Use a tray so you dont lose anything and lots of light is certainly helpful as well. The screen is a tad bit difficult to pry off. Inch your way forward gently - it will come off eventually. Don't lose the small tiny black piece that keeps the battery in (see other comment below). A mistake I made: I tried to raise the *silver* part and 1 of the 3 gps antennas broke off. But, fortunately, I turns out it works perfectly will with only 2 gps antennas after the fix. Do NOT raise the silver part. There is just an extremly tiny gold "pin" that sits on each of the 3 silver "plates". You need to raise this one gently upward. It's tiny and difficult to see but try and not raise it up 100%. Keep it still a *bit* diagonally. This prevents it from becoming squashed when you but the cover back on. If in doubt, dont raise 'em up too much. I have the feeling that the cardboard thing is more important for the whole thing to succeed. I didnt have a magnifying glass at hand, but I'd certainly recommend it just to understand better whats going on. For the cardboard, I lifted the cirucit board gently up a bit with a flat screwdriver and pushed the cardboard in from the side. It has to be tiny enough in order to not block the hole for the screw later. Reassembling now is the easiest thing: Just click the screen back on the frame from top to bottom; reinsert the SIM tray. *Remember* the tiny black part I told you about in the beginning. Screws back in. Battery. Switch back on. Excitement. A cool looking app I used to check: goo.gl/HPhxKX . But: Sorry, LG, this was also my first and my last LG device. Otherwise I'm pretty happy with it but this just MUST NOT happen with a flagship >=700€ device. Period.
This is an amazing fix, the most difficult part about it was finding a screwdriver. Prior to this fix I was getting 0 satellite fixes when inside, now I'm getting anywhere from 10-20. Thank you!
Hi Tech James.. I just want to thank you.. You saved me from buying another phone. I did the fix yesterday and today it has been working properly. thank you very much man!!
Thank you so much from Germany. It works! Took 10 minutes of my time. Before that fix I had NO signal, just nothing. Now GPS is perfect! No need to buy a new phone now. I am happy and hope it will work for a long time!
Absolutely awesome. I was ready to get rid of my phone and saw your post. I had zero satellites lock on in my house. Now 17. Appreciate the video. Thanks
Thanks James, that worked like a charm. Getting the screen off was a bit hard and those contacts are miserably small as well but in the end I got it all sorted and Google Drive and Strava work again like a charm. Great job!!!!
I can't wait to try this! My G5 hasn't found a satellite in a year and Sprint could care less. I just moved to Dallas and without GPS on my phone, I am LOST!! Thanks in advance!
Although this fixed the GPS problem, the headphone jack no longer recognizes headphones plugged in. I plan on finding some wireless bluetooth headphones instead. Overall a worthwhile trade-off though. It was a beast separating the screen from the chassis and got shards of tempered glass in my fingers from my screen protector. I also used a bit of 99% isopropanol to clean the contacts while I was in there. A jeweler's loupe is extremely helpful and had to hunt for the smallest phillips screwdriver I own. Glad I'm not buying a replacement phone or transferring data. Local cell repair shops wouldn't touch it, so I appreciate you making this video so I could at least get this function restored. All the best & blessings be.
Thank you!! It worked for me. After many, many months of frustration it looks like I will finally have a reliable GPS signal. It took a while to get the right combination of tools and shim. I used a piece of a very thin guitar pick instead of the card. And you need a #000 Phillips screw driver for the 3 screws. Any other size and you might damage the screw beyond usability. I watched several other videos and ended up using the best ideas from each video that worked best for me. Now I can hopefully keep my LG G5 for a few more years.
AWESOME!!!! Worked like a champ. GPS Status & Toolbox showed a lock on only 1 satellite, after this repair ( I used a small piece cut off a matchstick) I was locked onto 18. Thanks so much for posting.
Worked like a charm. Replaced my camera and fixed the GPS, 15 minutes start to finish. x. I used a piece of a business card folded over and cut to 1/4" x 1/4". It easily slipped under the motherboard. The hardest part is prying open the case.
Thanks. It works like a charm!! I could not send my phone back to lg for repairs because I was rooted and my bootloader was unlocked. Took me about 10 minutes. Thanks again!!!
It works! I couldn't figure out how to bend the clips up, maybe it's just my eyes but even with reading glasses it didn't look there was anything to bend. But I took the next step and slipped a bit of business card under the MB, took a while to put it all back together again (the black clip issue for which Andrew Spurr posted a link), got it back together and bam! Worked like a dream again. The Verizon people told me it was a goner, so thank you!
So far, so good! I tried just raising the pins and it worked for a week or so. Did your method with the paper shim and is working great. Thanks for sharing your fix. Love the G5 but what good is it without GPS?
Absolutely incredible!!! I cannot thank you enough. I could not do any satnav driving or map my runs as the GPS was rubbish. The fix was a bit fiddly but got there eventually. Now the GPS works perfectly. Thank you so much. Just be careful removing the screen... I bent the metal body of the phone around the sim card area and almost wasn't able to get the sim tray back in so be very careful. Thanks again you are a life saver!!!
To be honest, with the GPS not working properly i was thinking of buying a new phone. Thanks to you my issue is now solved. Im always afraid to open up a phone and to never see it turning on again. Your tutorial is short and not very detailed but i can assure that anybody can do it. 1000 thanks for this magic tip! I am know wondering about the build construction. If a piece of paper solved the issue LG's engineers could have think about this matter before by adding a layer of cheap plastic, it's not their 1st smartphone (i never opened the G4 to check how it is...)
Absolutely works. Had to go back in and raise it a little more. Then when I turned on my GPS Status app, it immediately locked in to the satellite and Google maps works perfectly now. Thank you!
I was about to trash this mobile for a much cheaper model, until I found this post. I've been completely without GPS, for what feels like forever . Seems to be working. Hopefully I can get some longevity out of a phone I like. Thank you.
Phenomenal fix!!! You are awesome! My gps has been garbage for the last year and yet everytime i took it in to the store it seemed to work...until I got out to the parking lot! This fix saved me hundreds, thanks! This reminds me of the youtube fix for my samsung galaxy year back that required me to "drop the phone from a few feet onto a hard surface" in order to turn my phone on due to crappy contacts. Thanks again!
im about to try this but have some preliminary questions, do you leave the card under the motherboard? and what can you use if you dont have the right size card? folded up paper? and is it easy to put the phone back together?
Why don't all of the people posting vids of them lifting the volume connectors just take down their videos? It's misleading and confuses people looking for the actual fix which is on the other side of the phone. Download a GPS satellite locator app. While it's running, pinch the phone firmly in the top right corner and watch all of the satellites come in to view. Fix is a tiny folded piece of tinfoil to make contact between the metal case and the GPS antennae contact up in that corner.
wow, i thought it would break my phone but i was at a point where i would bought a new phone if it doesnt work so i take the risk...but after i do this my gps works like the first day. this saves me a lot of money. thank you for sharing your knowledge
THANK YOU! THANK YOU! THANK YOU! You just saved me from buying a new phone! Between your video and another one I felt confident enough to try this. My GPS works again! THANK YOU! UPDATE (7 hours later): Well... my flashlight/camera flash no longer works and neither does my headphones jack. Oh well... at this point it's more important that I have reliable GPS. But it looks like I'll definitely be getting a new phone now 😭😭😭
Thanks, this worked to fix my G5. I'm not sure how this fixed it, those pins are only for the volume rocker, but I can say that I am now able to get a GPS signal. Also, that pencil tip you showed us worked amazingly to separate the phone, I was unsuccessful when using just a plastic tool. Anyone attempting this, please do be careful when removing the display, it would be very easy to crack the display if you pry too hard.
This fixed my GPS. I've had this phone for a year with spotty GPS. I cant believe this finally worked and I have pinpoint accurate GPS. A note of caution though for those attempting this. If you use a screwdriver to pry up the screen, be VERY careful not to lose the plastic clip that attaches to the case. If you pop this out and lose it your battery will no longer stay in place.
I have this same problem but i have the clip in question. I just dont know where it goes and I've tried looking online but nothing shows up. Please help, the battery wont stay in.
@Invzame I'm having problems with the battery staying in. Do you mind telling/showing what the clip looks like and where it goes? I would be very greatful
Found where the clip goes. If you look at this video (ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-c8x9uAH7QJM.htmlm14s) around 1:20 and look at the part of the phone in her left hand. On the bottom right of that part of the phone you'll see the black clip.
Thank you for posting this bit of info! My clip fell off and I had no idea where it went. Took a few tries to figure out which way it went so the battery would go back in. The key is that it actually goes *under* the tab - looks like it fits on it. Under the tab, arranged so the little hole fits over the hole for the screw.
Hi, Totally worked for me!!! Just tried it and now im getting a fix inside the house within about 10 seconds. Before nothing. Time will tell if it holds up. For now thanks!!!
Omg you are the bosssss! Fixed! Got 15/22 sats in less then 5 sec (in the house!!) You really need a thin plastic to lift the cover but besides that was pretty simple thanks a lot!
This was a completely brilliant fix - many thanks. The wankers at LG said they couldn’t help. After their phones stop selling and they’ve lost their jobs, maybe they’ll reflect on that. I thought it might be useful to show the instructions as a separate list, to avoid starting and stopping the video. Here you go: LG G5 GPS issue (SOLVED) Summary Aim: ensure the GPS pins always touch the connector. Temporary fix: extend the pins. Permanent fix: raise the motherboard. With a modicum of care, touch screen sensitivity and overall appearance are unaffected. Tools required: screwdriver, pencil, plastic pic/credit card, small piece of cardboard. Disassembly: Power off phone Remove battery Remove SIM tray Remove two retaining screws at foot of phone Insert wedge between back cover and screen/motherboard; then gently prise off Looking from behind, identify three small GPS pins at top rhs of screen/motherboard Gently raise the pins; and/or Gently raise the corresponding springs in the back cover Better still: Remove the single motherboard retaining screw, adjacent to the GPS pins Insert a sliver of cardboard beneath the motherboard, under the GPS pins Reassembly: Follow disassembly steps in reverse Drive to South of France and lay on beach.
It is the second time I open my LG G5 for GPS issue. First time just moving up the 3 little pins works OK but now it is gone again. I am adding the little sheet of paper and see how long it will last ! Thanks a lot for the hint
Thanks for a well done video with good camera angles and plenty of detail. Unfortunately the contacts shown are not for GPS, they are for the volume button and I confirm that with an Volt/Ohm meter. Perhaps it worked for you and others by the mere fact that when the case was opened and closed it re-established the contacts responsible for the GPS antenna.
you are Genius. at first i didn't want to do it because i have no experience with smartphone repair and was afraid the display might break. But it is very simple and best of all: IT WORKS
thanks mate, it worked, from 0 to 12/21 and I'm at the window. I just put one thin plastic piece below the motherboard to lift it up. Result is, the screen is slightly above the case now but since I use a protective case it doesn't matter.
Quick question... once you put the piece of card under the board do you replace the screw or leave it out. If you put the screw back, do you fully tighten it or leave it looser? Thanks!
I tried it, I do think these three pins are for the volume only, however, it works for my phone! Coincide maybe, who cares, as long as it works.Thx, James.
totally worked for me what great information. for the guy that his volume keys don't work now you needed to be careful not running the picks too deep on the sides.
How do you get the pick in? Does it go under the screen, or between the screen and the side of the metal? I couldn't get anything in that gap. Do I just have to raise the screen higher first?
I have no idea if this is what fixed it or simply making the whole motherboard press against the case better is what did it, but I've got working GPS again, and before it didn't work at all, like it wouldn't detect where I'm at unless I was connected to wifi.
GPS antenna is the inner of the 3. The other 2 are for the volume up and down. I know this because these two contacts broke when I dropped my phone and not volume is lost.
Awesome dude, did you friend add the piece of paper? i did this without the paper first and it stopped working in a week!, had the paper in for 2 months now and its still going strong!
The first try was just with Paper the result was no connection at all. So we raised the pins up a bit like in your video and put a little thinner paper under the board. And it worked! :)
I confirm, it's working great. I've put a plastic slightly slimmer than credit card under the pins. Thank you so much, i start to love my G5 again..!
One piece of advice. When you put the screw beside the GPS pins back in, get it lightly tight, then back it off a quarter turn. It'll help keep the pins touching.
Thank you and thanks to all the comments! I finally tried the fix and found my pins weren't flat at all so i didnt touch them. All i did was put a piece of business card underneath. Now I have 15/21 satellites indoors! Hopefully this holds up!
hey i followed the video the video and it didnt work, im guessing that i didnt raise the pins enough so ill go back and do it again. However it caused my flashlight to stop working, any idea what I did wrong and more importantly how to fix this? Thanks in advance!
Now I have an LG TV using folded card stuffed in the frame to prevent a line of dead pixels, and now folded card to prevent my LG phone from losing GPS. Dear LG, please include card with all products.
Okay, so what is "the LG G5 GPS issue"? The issue I am having specifically, is my Google Maps is having a lot of trouble pinpointing my location when moving. If I say for for example, "Okay Google, take me to Walmart", and I click to start navigation... it seems to know where I am, but when I start moving, that's when it goes crazy. I start teleporting, not moving for long periods of time... and I never get any audible step by step instructions because it doesn't really know where I am. I have swapped the sim card for a new one at my provider for free, and I have also uninstalled / reinstalled Google Maps. My location settings are on high, and I have reset my network settings as well... just for the thrill of it. Still having the same issue. This video is definitely within my ability, but I also don't want to waste my time. Thoughts on whether or not this will fix it, or what is "the LG G5 GPS issue" exactly? Thanks.
