The LGB (Lehmann Gross Bahn) Forney is based on the wonderful Sandy River and Rangeley Lakes Forneys. Like all LGB locomotives, it's mostly accurate, has fair detail, is super rugged, and is a GREAT runner.
As an LGB "G" scale locomotive it is a 1:22.5 scale meter gauge running on a #1 gauge (1.75") track. All LGB trains were models of meter gauge locomotives until 1984 when they came out with the American Mogul, a three-foot gauge prototype. They kept the 1:22.5 scale, mostly, even though this was a three-foot gauge locomotive. BUT LGB used a very rubbery ruler when scaling most of their models.
In the 1990's when they came out with this Forney they really tossed out the scale ruler. As they didn't follow an exact scale they even shortened the prototype length.
The prototype was a two-foot gauge. In keeping with the large-scale tradition they always keep the gauge the same. Usually #1 gauge, and scale the model to run on the #1 gauge track. SO in this case the model should have been built to 5/8" to the foot or 1:13.7 scale. Accucraft offers this locomotive in that scale and yes, it's huge! Anyway, the SR and RL Forney is great model.
Today LGB offers a modified version as the Disneyland "Fred Gurley" with Holaday Red cars. Super train set! A good representation of this Disney train. Hard to find...
The Forney is a steam engine conceived, patented, and built between 1861 and 1864 by Matthias Forney. (others were also built by other companies that simply copied the original Forney. Some of the SR and RL were built by Portland in Mane) As a tank engine, it carries its water tank on-board instead of in a tender. The wheel arrangement was originally a 0-4-4T with 4 driving wheels followed by a truck with 4 wheels. Later a pilot truck was added making it a 2-4-4T. It was offered in many gauges including this 24" gauge.

The SR&RL hauled pulpwood for paper mills in the State of Maine. The Forney Locomotives were also used in Chicago on the elevated line in the 1890's

That's a beautiful LGB locomotive! Yes I purchased an LGB Forney, back in the early 2000s. I had a G scale outdoor New York City elevated line that I used to pull Bachmann coaches. I guess I was one of those guys that wished my LGB Forney, was painted all black, to simulate the Forneys on the Elevated transit system. As always; A great video. Thanks for sharing.

Hi. It looks great in black! I do love the classic American black rusty sooty locomotive. But I really love the 1870 American colored locomotive. And the British green and maroon. Heck. We just love trains I guess.

Hello from the East Coast! The 2 footers have been all over New England. They were started by a business man who was inspired by the little narrow gauge railroads over in England. He built the Billerica and Bedford Railroad just outside Boston. When that venture failed he tried again In Maine, which became a huge success until technology caught up. Most of the original equipment was scrapped, but a few pieces were saved by private collectors. One of these collectors owned a cranberry bog close to Cape Cod and built around 6 miles of track in a loop. The little trains started to draw crowds who wanted a ride and eventually the foundation of what was to be Edaville Amusement park was formed. In recent years the surviving locomotives and rolling stock were brought back up to Maine where they continue to run today.

Really need to come see. Or sea? Love cranberry bogs. Odd thing to love right? But found them in Long Beach. The one in Washington State. A real Long Beach. 120 miles of drivable beach! Now that’s an adventure! Anyway two primary businesses. Cranberry’s and kites. Cranberry’s thrive there and the wind always blows. So…

My current gauge is O, O27, Standard Gauge Pre and Post War, S gauge and a beginner in Live Steam Gauge 1., (which is G gauge). But no electric G gauge, they are very interesting and I will take the challenge soon. Thanks for these videos and keep them coming.

The Sandy River & Rangeley Lakes RR was the largest 2-ft-gauge railroad at around 70+ miles. It hauled logs, pulp wood, and general freight. The Monson was the 2 X 6 or 2 foot gauge by about 6 miles long to haul slate out of the quarry to the Maine Central RR. The original equipment for the SR was a short commuter railroad into Boston, MA which did not last long which is why such small locos. I think the biggest loco to be built for 2-ft gauge was a 2-6-2 outside frame. There were standard gauge Forneys on the New York Els.

2 foot railroads in Maine were a way that remote communities could have rail Access to the outside world. They halled everything from people to live stock to raw and finished goods. They were a inexpensive way for the community's to have a railroad and they operated just like there standard gage counterparts. They went into decline tords the end of the 1930s and were gone by the end of ww2. Some stuff was saved and operated at knots bearry farm in Massachusetts and then was brought back to Maine. Other stuff was found, brought in from elsewhere or has been recreated. Definitely something for you guys to check out. I will post some videos in the comments to help you guys get to know them better. Thanks for showing the photos of the trains in Maine.

Yes, the SR&RL still is around as a small tourist railroad. There are several videos on You Tube about the railroad and its history too. Take a little time to view their videos, then again, maybe not because you will want to go see it, even more. They still reduce a certain amount of maple sap to sugar. It's very sweet and does have a good maple flavor. As usual, here is another outstanding video. ;-)

I can remember when LGB engines came out. It is a great running engine and last for along time. Unfortunately I have been modeling in dual gauge Ho/Hon3, and collected a few On30 engines and cars. Mostly Ho/ Hon3 which I have model most of my life. Going to a larger scale will more likely be in the future the older I get. It would be easier on the eyes and hands with the larger scale. Thanks for sharing and see you on Sunday. Be safe.👍🚂🚂🚂🚂🚂

I remember when I was maybe 7 years old: at Christmas my parents went into Manhattan and we saw a show at Radio City Music Hall. While we were there, we went to FAO Schwarz. This was Kid-Heaven! -any exotic toy that you never even dreamed existed was there! (-not a bright move by Mom and Dad to bring about four kids there with no plans of buying anything!) One of the things I remember was this piece of train track packaged on a card. It had two rails and brown ties like the HO we had at home, but it was immense! I didn't see any of the trains that went with it, but the sight of that track so impressed me that I remember it to this day. (-even more than the puppet theater everybody else was soo "ooh" and "ahh" about!) Years later I found out what I'd seen, and at Polks Hobby near the Empire State Building (FAO Schwarz for Grownups!), I bought my first starter set.

Beautiful video. I agree with you that a 5/8ths scale version would have been amazing - and huge! I think Accucraft may have produced one in that scale in live steam since the time you made this video. You and I are similar, in that I managed to purchase many of the really cool and relatively affordable mass produced G gauge locomotives over many decades. Often when their original production run was being closed out. And most of mine still sit boxed in storage, waiting on me to put some track down. I do hope when the time comes they will wake up in a good humor after so long. I have the black version of this LGB Forney which you mention in the video. Do you have the Bachmann Forney as well? I believe that one is slightly more detailed and accurate as a scale model. And mine is not lettered for a two foot gauge railroad, so it could have existed in its scale of 1.20.3 I believe in the Bachmann version I bought the outside frame example. Wish I could have afforded the inside frame version as well (Bachmann built them both ways) but both money and storage space are finite. Really enjoying all your videos!

The pivoting front power bogey isn't prototypical for Fornys (likely put on the model so it would fit around the LGB curves), Mason Bogeys where the only articulated locomotives of that configuration (disregarding the other single Fairlies that where built all over the world)

It is not all lost with the gauge as I may have read somewhere, I guess it was in of those Gazette magazines from the 1980.s, that Denver had some in 3 ft gauge for some sort of suburban service. So you can justify the engine as such! I believe they were all gone pretty early on.

Plastic and metal and detail being the factors... You gotta love LGB! -within the same train you can have standard gauge, meter gauge, 3 foot gauge and 2 foot gauge equipment. (It's not for purists!) -shame to admit for an SR&RL fan, I didn't get LGB Engine #22, but I do have their SR&RL coach. Their #22 is kind of a compromise: A real Forney has a ridged frame all the way from coupler to coupler: no swiveling! These took a lot of radius to turn around, waaayy too much for LGB!
@ToyManTelevision
@ToyManTelevision 2 года назад
It’s a cool locomotive though. Accurate? Well NO. But fun. And a great runner.
@Narrowgaugefilms
@Narrowgaugefilms 2 года назад
I would NOT refuse it if offered! I actually have SR&RL #21 in 0n2. This is an engine of the same class as 22. She's roughly the length of an HO six-axle diesel, but she's not comfortable curving tighter than about 36" radius! (Apparently there is lots of room to turn around up in Maine.} My LGB WP&Y diesel (maybe 4 times as long) curves much tighter with ease. I'm a member of the WW&F and SR&RL museums, they are amazing places! The best part is they let regular people pick up a shovel or a spike hammer and join in! Now Here's your LGB Punchline: 20 years ago, my wife and I toured Germany. We were staying in Munich so we drove up to Nuremburg for the day. We went to their railroad museum. I asked one of the volunteers where the LGB Factory is. He had no idea what "LGB" is! (We DID explain!) -So not every railfan is a model railroader!
