Thanks for this inspirational vid' ! I actually acquired a unit back in '016, from our primary regional vendor of LGB+ . Circa: Red unit , "made in hungary", p/n 21670 . It runs quite well, and does make the railheads shine , similar to proto' IMHO. 8-) Previously to when sched' time for the 'crew & unit' to head out to clean the railheads. I give the usual start-off section (about 3') a cleaning with 1000grit attached to a drywall sander. Then the unit is set to go at basically half speed 'on-the-dial', as I don't want it to wear it's cleaners prematurely ;-) Even though when I bought the unit I did purchase a replacement wheel set, at the same time, since costs always rise ...... ehhh LoL "G-gauge may not RULE, but it GROWS on ya !!" djc'99

Also AristoCraft track enjoys the rub' of this unit ! And very likely Piko would, too ! Via usage, "LGB Track Cleaning Locomotive - CLEANING MADE EASY " Especially when some acquired trackage, are from railways that have permanently closed down, ..... saving them from possibly a trip to a landfill or metal scrap yard !? We have at least one local train hobby shop that intermittently acquires some of our G-gauge track, and flips it as-is close to half of, shiny-new retail $$ (ex. 5foot / $15-20cdn) . That used' track already nicely naturally-weathered on the sides, with railheads possibly needing some shining-up' . Would be perfect to use for protected (aka indoor) railway, vs excessively shiny trackage IMHO ;-) "G-gauge may not RULE, But it GROWS on Ya !! " djc'99

Super. I need a track grinder! That independent speed control is interesting. I operate two boxcars that have sharpening stones mounted underneath, and I usually operate the snowplow to remove leaves. Hello from the Tracy Mountain Railway in Colorado. P.S. My dad has an S-Scale train from his childhood, in 1955 or so. We spent several years (Decembers) sanding tracks to get it running again in the 90s through 00s. This is a really awesome addition to a train set! Do they have it in other scales?
@ThatBIGTRAINGuy
@ThatBIGTRAINGuy Год назад
Ah, cool! Nice memories. Well this is LGB who only make this scale. I've not seen rolling scrubber types for smaller scales but I'm sure they could be fairly easily built. For most scales though, quite easily available are vehicles with sprung cleaning pads (or the cleaning pads to fit to a vehicle) that will just glide over the rails as the train runs. That should be enough for indoor layouts, I would imagine. This LGB machine is for outdoor dirt, which probably needs a deeper clean. Thanks!

What I can't believe that this is designed to run off of the track power only. I would think if your track needs to be cleaned due to contact problems, it should have a option to run off a battery. Yes, it should be true if you run the cleaner wheels first it should make the train have no problem getting through the whole layout, but if it is disturbing corrosion on the track, is not the engine pushing it, going to pick up that gunk on it's wheels. Yes, I know most of the G scale have slider shoes, so that does in it's self help with connection problems.
@ThatBIGTRAINGuy
@ThatBIGTRAINGuy 2 года назад
Well I think the idea is to give it a run regularly before your track get's that dirty. I tend to put it out every two or three times I run trains, letting it do a couple of circuits before I put anything else out. (I don't run trains that often, so it's probably once a month). If your tracks were really dirty, the scrubbing wheels do lead, so the power pickups would be following on cleaned (probably not perfectly) track. You may just need to hand scrub 6 or 8 inches to get it started. In any case, there is also the Piko Clean Machine, which people seem to really like. No-where near as intense a clean as the LGB, but it's battery power and you can just let it run around as long as you like :-) Whatever suits you. Thanks for your comment! /Simon

More surprising is the fact 99% of G scale trains don't have a battery option. You can convert them with kits but with today's battery technology which has come a long way, it should be standard for having both track power and rechargeable battery via the rails since G scale trains are mostly used outside.

@@ThatBIGTRAINGuy For daily running, there's also cars you can buy, or even little clip onto the underside of existing stock. That lets you do light cleaning during a run, and run the track cleaning loco after long periods of downtime.

You have a sort of a sarcastic wit about you. I find that many people from the UK have this trait. One expression you’ll use but we gave up is “crack on!” Don’t know exactly what is to refer to or mean but is one of those sayings. Keep ‘em on the rails!
@ThatBIGTRAINGuy
@ThatBIGTRAINGuy 2 года назад
Yes, a subtle sarcasm is essential. "Crack on" is like to start doing something, or continue. You could be having a break from a job, then you might say "Right, let's crack on". It's not something I say personally, but people around me often do.

How do people clean the connectors? I used a dremel sanding disc last year but it's awkward, not very through, & will probably destroy my connections in a couple x-mases.
@ThatBIGTRAINGuy
@ThatBIGTRAINGuy 6 месяцев назад
Hiya! A dremel sounds a bit much, I wouldn't do that unless it was a soft brush. Permanent track would be connected with screwed clamps or have wire soldered to keep electrical connection. My track has actually been outside for about four years with just the standard push-fit rail connectors, and it's only recently that I've had conductivity issues. Usually a little bit of pulling in and out keeps the contacting surface clean enough. I would use something like WD-40 and a brush (a tooth brush maybe) and give them a good scrub. I've seen some people swear by soaking overnight in Coca-cola! I hope you get sorted, and have a Merry Christmas! Simon
@CentralCanada
@CentralCanada 5 месяцев назад
Back in '99 when I laid track I would upgrade any of the LGB trackage with Aristo' couplers, tap/die 5mm setback from jointedge, about a mm of lgb grease on the initial entry lip sliding onto the now-upgraded LGB track, then just previous to joining sections, about a mm of lgb grease on the entry lip of the coupler so when slid together it would coat the contact edges and likely bleed to the joint area during natural heat moments. Acquisition of extra Aristo' couplers/screws was via vendor purchases and whenever I heard/read about someone mentioning they were further upgrading to possibly all "split jaws", or as mentioned "soldering wire connections" , I would ask* if I paid shpg costs would they send all the units they are retiring when done, to save them from a likely wasteful trip to a landfill. Trackage here amazingly did not show any electrical conductivity issues, for at least 16yrs !! "G-gauge may not RULE, but it GROWS on Ya !! " djc'99 p.s. *the same request/proposition I have conveyed, when I hear/read of Aristo-Craft H'n'Ls being retired at other short-line railways ! As I customize and weather them to use when processing rolling stock, seen on the PSRB rwy 8-)

Absolutley useless piece of kit. If the motor gets power, then the rails don't need cleaning and wheelskates on normal locos will do the job as good. I have never cleaned my outdoor track in 25 years and it still doesn't need cleaning.
@ThatBIGTRAINGuy
@ThatBIGTRAINGuy Месяц назад
Haha! Well, whatever suits. It was around two years when my locomotives started to struggle on power pickup, - the track needed cleaning! You say "normal locos" but none of mine have skates, and I've never seen skates on real trains so... I'm glad mine don't have them. I know that's a feature on LGB locos. Many people swear by this cleaning vehicle. If you say you've never needed it, well,... lucky you. I am, however, looking into non-scrubbing ways of cleaning track. But,... I still NEED to clean my track. Thank you! Simon
