My younger sibling was the only family I told about my dating life and they didn't realize it wasn't a joke for YEARS. They came out to me as non-binary and i basically told them "I'm sorry you felt weird about coming out. I want to be someone you can confide in, like how you're so casual about me being gay" And then they were like "what the fuck you're gay". Funniest shit ever. I'd been publicly dating this person for like three months. We would literally like spoon in front of my sibling. They thought it was one of those ironic male friend things where you're like "wanna smash?" when referring to smash bros or something. me and the boys spooning but ironically

I was in the closet for the longest time to the point to where I would project this strange overt homophobia. I basically lied to myself. I told myself I'm a good Christian boy and the "dirty gays" wont take me. I fooled myself into genuinely believing this. I was the bully. Then for some reason I just stopped lying to myself? there was no catalyst, no awakening event. Even as I type this I'm thinking of what may have caused my seemingly overnight change and I'm drawing a blank. I didn't tell anyone. I didn't announce that I was gay. Just one day I drew some gay porn and my mom found it and seemingly no one cared. I wasnt ridiculed for it and no one brought up my previous homophobia. I was in high school at the time and no one there found out until someone asked why i wasn't so hateful anymore. Again no one seemed to care. It felt odd since it was a floridian semi rural area but i didn't bother questioning it. I do regret the way I treated others during that period but I'm glad I pulled myself out of that mindset. I didnt hate myself for being who I am anymore and that was a good feeling.

I have a similar experience. I grew up in catholic school. I knew I wasn't straight at the ripe age of 13/14 when I found literotica and could not get enough of the lesbian erotica stories. I'm not lesbian because I experience attraction to all different types of people, but at the time I knew I fit under the bi umbrella because I was interested in the girls and guys around me. But I buried that part of myself for many years and preached the whole "hate the sin, love the sinner" bullshit. I'm sure I hurt people around me that I didn't know were gay/bi at the time, and im regretful of it. I'm happy to have found peace with my sexuality now though.
@SomeGuyNamedTodd
@SomeGuyNamedTodd 2 года назад
I had a similar experience, but the homophobia was more internalized I guess. I tried to use religion to fix myself because I thought I had some kind of "curse". Nobody in my family ever talked positively about homosexuality or bisexuality. It was always joked about. So I just kept praying for god to fix me or whatever. Its the only thing I ever asked them for. I never told anyone about it until after high school. I think I was 21 or 22 when I realized I was wasting my life not being myself. Not being as happy as I could be. Waiting for some magical change that was never gonna come. I liked dudes. That was that. It hasn't been easy to undo years of self-hate but I can talk about it with people now. I couldn't even do that a few years ago. I'm glad everything is better now for you, Silas. If you live near the Tampa Bay area, there's a really fun pride parade event every summer in St. Petersburg that I'd recommend. -A fellow Floridian.

I gave myself the nickname Super King Bitch and they eventually didn't even tease me anymore. Then my Christian step dad came in and turned me into a lil Nazi. Is there an ace segment? As an ace dude i often feel like im occupying this weird limbo space in an lgbtq adjacent scene, where ace folks are included when convenient and excluded when forgotten or unwanted. Most discourse ive encountered comes from talk about how asexuality "isnt as hard," "doesnt face the same discrimination," or "isnt real." I still feel uncomfortable associating with the lgbt scene at large bc i feel like dont have a space or properly belong. Would love to either share or hear another's story on their experiences.

16:45 I remember seeing a meme somewhere when I was just starting to come out as nonbinary and making my first queer friends. It was like "my cis het friend who I've known since highschool" and a drawing of two women at a cafe talking about handbags or something. And then "a queer friend I met yesterday" and it's a pic of two people hugging each other on a sofa at 2am and describing their innermost fears and dreams. And that literally has been my experience of queer friendships. Shit can get deep real fast

I had a really odd process of self discovery, i don't want to say that I always assumed I was straight, but whenever I would've been told I would have a wife in the future, I was always completely uninterested but acknowledged it would be an inevitability. Come me turning 12 and 3 months into starting in a new school i learn that gay people exist and realised that mightve explained why I was never interested in women, within a matter of days i knew i was gay and it's still so to this day lol. Yeah... my situation is weird to begin with but I always thought I was straight... (well...) but I was never seemingly interested in having s3x... honestly, I'm still uncertain as heck, but I feel like I figured a FEW things out... I think I could have a romantic relationship with just about anyone and that's sheerly just based on their personality... I could probably only be s3xually attracted to men... but (take this as you will) the idea of being "gay" just seemed weird to me... specifically because I sort of started having thoughts revolving around gender before that... so I'm either a rather feminine gay dude, or a straight trans woman... I'd like to figure that out, but hey... always could just love someone, never been in a relationship but just loving a person seems like the important thing anyways xD.

I was hard bullied throughout middle and high school, my mom sent me to a christian family counselor for a couple of weeks after school and the harassment from people i used to call friends continued until i was nearly 19 coming onto my second year of college. I still don’t have a very good relationship with my mom despite us being better off together than we were in the past. Hell my first kiss was with a girl out of nothing but peer pressure. Had her as a gf just to try and get people to stop harassing me but that didn’t work. Even the school faculty didn’t ever help me out when they’d literally be standing right in front of me when i’d be getting death threats or having wet gummy bears spit at my face. It's weird too cause despite going to the most progressive art school in my area (I live in the deep south) with half the school being gay, I didn't end up coming out during that time or early college. I'm assuming it's due to the oppressive religious culture of the south and my religious parents shaming any remotely femme or gay traits I had as a child.

So then, wouldn't a man who is openly flamboyantly gay, or uses makeup, wears skirts, etc., be doing basically all those things knowing they might face some flack for it? It was only a year and a half since I discovered I was bi, but I think it was the oddest way to figure it out. I'd always thought I was straight, but when I watched porn I always looked to the women, but I would say to myself that I couldn't be bi since I didn't have any sexual attraction to women. A year and a half ago I just discovered that I really do find girls attractive, just not sexually. And six months ago I also discovered that I don't even find boys sexually attractive if I'm not already in a relationship with them, and in very specific contexts, so I think I'm just a weird demisexual bisexual
@PropheticShadeZ

This might not be you, but from a lot of discussions women have lots of experience with unwanted and continuous sexualisation so they become a lot less comfortable showing sexual attraction or sexuality at all. I can relate to the thing about your parents still accepting you regardless if you're gay or straight. But for some reason growing up, even tho I had already accepted other sexualities, I would always find it irrationally annoying when my parents would tell me that it "didn't matter if I dated / married a girl or a guy", as privileged as that sounds. It was only until recently that it was because I was aromantic asexual. Finding out that I just naturally didn't experience those kinds of attraction made a lot of things about myself make sense. What also makes a lot of things make sense for me is that I'm non-binary as, despite being assigned male at birth, I never really thought of myself as a "boy" on my own and just assumed that I was because that's what I was told. And now what complicates things is that I honestly have no idea how I'm going to even attempt to come out to the people around me and explain things that they probably aren't too familiar with. The anxious and antisocial part of me is telling me that it's a pretty silly matter that I needn't not worry about and just not tell anyone. But the realistic part of me is telling that interaction is inevitable and it isn't worth it to keep my identity bottled up like this for the rest of my life. So while I have told a handfull of people about my asexuality, I haven't fully comeout to everyone about everything and I don't know how. Google knows more about me than my family.

Polyamorous people being considered queer isn't nearly the same as people with a leather kinks being considered queer. When was the last time you heard about leather loving weddings being illegal? As a pansexual, non-binary, polyamorous person, I really can't come up with a valid reason to separate it from my other queer identities. With any of the three, I know I'm powerless to change them, I've been both alienated for and found great community through them, and all are minorities often shit upon. The only experience I can think of with any significant relevance to my life is that I am free to be married to another gay and/or trans person, but I'll probably never be able to have the kind of marriage I'd actually want. The same ways I've have been forced to compromise on my sexuality and gender, I've also been forced to compromise on my polyamory. I feel hopeless in ever finding love because everytime I get in a relationship, I get denied a polyamorous relationship, settle for monogamy, then get cheated on. It kills my ability to trust, breaks my heart, then goes on infinitely to be the only relationship opportunity I ever get, despite knowing for a fact that I'm not nearly the only person on the planet that feels this way. (Also, if polyamory isn't queer nor part of queer culture, why are other romantic orientations such a large part of it too? Such as an asexual panromantic, or a pansexual aromantic person. The line Vaush is drawing at polyamory seems very arbitrary to me.)

I always felt like monogamy made me choose what part of my sexuality was accepted to show (I'm bisexual). Polyamory just always seemed like the right thing for me. I can also relate to not having the relationship or marriage that I want with people.

Pansexual would be a sexuality not a gender identity so it doesn't usually have any basis on pronouns. A person could be a female pamsexual or a male pamsexual or a nonbinary pansexual. But regardless of anything, use whatever pronouns feel nice

I've faced a lot of homophobia, I've experienced multiple hate crimes... I even studied heterosexual behaviour and learned to act like them... so as someone who's had it pretty bad I really don't like when other people diminish their own experiences because they haven't had it as bad and "don't want to take away from people who've had it worse"... there's always someone who's in worse conditions than you are, but that doesn't make your own experience any less valid... this is just internalised bigotry and I've noticed that pan and bi people tend to struggle from it even more than other queer people... I wonder why... this also feels weirdly condescending... "I don't want to take away the focus from people who are, less fortunate" I know that this isn't how it's intended, but I really do not like that shit...
