Most merchant ships would surrender immediately after encountering a pirate ship. In fact, it was actually more common for merchants to just give up the loot. If I had to guess, the stereotype of pirates being bloodthirsty sea warriors comes from the film industry and other media.

I feel like many of those relationships of pirates cud also have been in QPRs with lots of aros and aces among them who just have nontraditional views of intimacy and what is and isnt acceptable between folks in any given relationship. Likewise, i kno many of them were polyam as well; one of my fave ones there is Ching Il Sao and her husband and adopted son, who was also both their lovers and adopted in his 20s or so. When her husband passed, Ching Il Sao married her adopted son; which is often characterised by historians as merely a ploy to allow her to maintain control of the pirate fleet rather than a schism and fight for control with the prior leader havin died... But she was known to make love to him, as was her late husband; and at no pt did any of them have any problems with any of this. It was treated as normal and accepted and none of the other pirates tried to claim there was somethin afoot cuz she was marryin her adopted son or cuz her husband "cheated" on her with her adopted son. It was just accepted that not all relationships are exclusive; no doubt about it. Heck, id also wager that last group were prty kinky too but i have no evidence to back that up... But its guaranteed there were tons and tons of kinky pirates bcuz bein free from societal taboos when it comes to gender and sexuality almost always leads to the same freedoms for nontraditional displays of love. Also, pirate LARPers are the kinkiest LARPers; so theres def gotta be a connection there :P And there wud def be Intersex pirates. In fact, a male presentin intersex person wud be much safer among pirates than among standard militaries or anywhere else aboard a vessel. Why? That whole not wantin women on ships thing due partly to superstition and mostly to misogyny, yeah... It meant that if you were a dude that just happened to have a cooter down below; you cud be unceremoniously removed from a ship before a journey if discovered... Or worse if discovered later on the journey. As a pirate, you simply needed to statr this was how you existed and you were def a dude and theyd have no qualms; at least among the open minded pirates. Im not unconvinced that there werent some shitty closeminded pirate crews, cuz theres always such folks who selfishly or out of superstition or bias decide to drawn their line for what is and isnt wrong just to the edge of whatever theyre doin as bein acceptable and nothin more nonconformative is allowed. But still, theyre nvr the majority and its clear among most pirates; an intersex man wud be accepted regardless of down below, just as much as any trans man wud be accepted. Im curious on their views of genderless folks or other kinds of nontraditional binary folks; id wager theyd probs have been acceptin of such folks for the most part, tho i cud see their women on ships superstition extendin to very feminine folks even if theyre not a binary woman but just look like one for the most part. Myself, if back in the gay old pirate days... Id probs want to be an enby gal workin somewhere in a little pirate cove spendin my time gallivantin around with the other folk that hang around such and keep things runnin for when the lads get back from grabbin bootys; no doubt them folk wud be at least as queer as the ones at sea and i also know i wud just enjoy that life right along the sea but outside of the thumb of a governin body that tries to force conformity and taboos on us.

THANK YOU for telling your tale. I have always loved pirates. My town was named for Stephen Decatur who concoured the pirates of Tripoli. As an architectual student, I created a community center called Tripoli Centre in my home town last year based on the pirates of the Barbary coast in Northern Africa. I followed it up with an 8-story cylindrical residential complex this semester called Pirates Cove that has mini apartments for the homeless to 3 bedrooms apartments. It is on a promentary point overlooking the lake that had been abandoned suffering urban blight. In my interior renderings, within the main community room of the residential tower, waiting for his groom, I staged a wedding with a hot looking shirtless pirate in the foreground wearing a glorious feather buccaneer hat, displaying an earring with a flamboyant necklace that sits off his pecs. Some of the architect jurors were shoked at my rendering and presentation but I didn't care. I wanted them to consider the presense of the LGBT community.

Though I see some minor biases per expected by Professor Pride, I am glad you spoke of this topic after Our Flag Means Death. Another thing to add context from some studies I heard of in more modern times. I don't remember the exact studies done but there was a study done on isolated communities that had mostly same sex individuals. What ended up happening was that they established emotionally intimate and sometimes sexual relationships. Due to that, without societal pressures I believe people are naturally queer to leaning bi. Just my thoughts.

This video reminds me that we need more LGBTQ+ pirate films and shows. Our Flag Means Death has paved the way for the possibility of more like it in the future. Pirates of the Caribbean would have been the first but seeing as how the execs purposefully tried to quash all queerness from Jack Sparrow's character by throwing female characters on his lap, I've since crossed that off the list for consideration.

Quick correction, not all pirate attacks were violent-in fact, many of them weren't. The pirates would essentially use shock and scare tactics combined with their inherent reputation to coax an immediate surrender. Certainly that reputation wasn't built up on nothing, and so pirates were certainly violent and liable to commit atrocities when provoked, but a quick surrender could usually guarantee the lives and safety of your crew-and so that route was often taken.

I have past life memories of being Dr George Wilson. In this life, my husband was a “former” gangster and gang leader who was fond of proclaiming that he was the “tee totalling pirate king!”’ He became a Christian and went to Bible College, became a Pentecostal Ministerand for many years had a mission where he would preach and hold church services for all the other gangsters, prostitutes, drug addicts, alcoholics and homeless people. He was a good musician and also liked listening to live bands and met many famous musicians and also TV industry people. He said must have taken over 400 ships in his past life, but lost count at about 300. He didn’t remember his name or my name, but just that he was the teetotal pirate king and that I was The Surgeon. In this life I trained as a scientist (BSc, Melbourne) and almost majored in anatomy but instead chose to study environmental science, when I heard they were disrespecting the corpses. We did past life regression and saw that I was his lover in that life, a surgeon and a woman who was cleverly disguised as a man. I did this disguise for economic and personal safety reasons, not sexual reasons, because life for women was horrible and men had all the advantages, wealth and opportunities. What follows is a brief summary of what I remembered or discovered during past life regression work… Time stamp 8:37. I remember being on Howell Davis' pirate ship when Roberts was taken but after Roberts was made captain, (when Davis was killed in a bungled kidnap and ransom plot) there was a mutiny and I found myself on the mutineer's ship. I liked Roberts and didn't agree with the mutiny, but what could I do? To cut a long story short, I eventually ended up back in England where I banked my share of the loot and worked for a time as a surgeon on land (opened a barber shop). This was in Liverpool. However, when I heard that my former shipmates had been arrested, I feared they would betray me, so I shut up my barber shop and returned to sea. I signed up with John Tarlton's company and this was how I found myself on his ship, the Tarlton, AKA the Stanwich. The Tarlton was taken by Roberts off the African coast, and that was how I met him again. Roberts definitely remembered me, but I don't think any of his other crew members did. I helped to take the Tarlton by drugging the Tarlton Brothers (John and Thomas Tarlton), when I saw that Roberts' ship was close and was going to attack the ship and I did this by spiking their drinks. I didn't give them anything deadly, they just went to sleep for a bit, that's all! I then stood in the captain's place and this was how I came to be among the pirates, once again, and also Roberts' messmate, or matelot. All this time I was disguised as a man and nobody ever worked out that I was actually female, not even to my dying day! The only one who ever figured it out was Bartholomew Roberts himself. I only began researching the history of these events three months after my husband’s death, in 2003 and this was when I learned about Captain Roberts and Dr Wilson. My husband had a premonition that he was going to die and made me promise to bury him at sea, which manner of burial I arranged for him. Roberts also had a premonition that he would die soon and made his crew, including Wilson, promise to bury him at sea, which they did. My husband is buried 40 nautical miles off the Capalaba Coast, near the Gold Coast of Australia and Roberts is buried off the Calabar Coast, which is near the Gold Coast of Africa. RIP Archibald Robertson McIsaac, you are sorely missed, every day!
