I uttered an "oh snap!" when I saw this video in my subscription box, for I had thought I was one of the scant few who knew about and played this game when I was younger. It sure was balls hard and I didn't get as far as I'd like, but Alien Rampage is a pretty quality DOS game and worth the zero dollars I paid to try the first episode. It's good to relive those memories.

Looks pretty awesome, nice animations, good old platformer gameplay and a good portion of blood and gore. Too bad I missed this back in the days, but it looks something that would be still fun today. Probably gonna get it from ebay some day

Wow, I'm glad I clicked on this. With such a generic title I was surprised to find this to be the first time In a while that I've seen a dos game that I've never heard of before. On top of that.. like you said, it's... ridiculously triple A for something 'so little people care about'. I think it's more likely they don't know about it, like me, either. Platformers on the PC really weren't all that great. There were exceptions, like Keen, Jazz Jackrabbit, (or ones that are more cinematic like Flashback, Black Thorne, Prince of Persia, Another World/OOTW) but for the most part they tended to be more like engines with a few elements of gameplay.. spread over 100 maps that didn't vary in any mechanics EXCEPT for the design. Literally just a different placement of blocks. THIS actually has gameplay variation like a more modern platformer. On top of that, it has a surprising number of frames in it's animation, at least for the main character, and the sprite work itself is amazing.

These videos on old DOS games are so amazing. I love the channel's newer content too, but it's sad to see this particular niche mostly left in the past. I found so many favorite classic games through these videos, including this one that I play around every Halloween, and I decided to revisit this video for it!

Well I'll be damned.. I just checked on eBay for shits 'n giggles, and low and behold, there is a single listing for Alien Rampage from a seller that supposedly has a bunch of new copies of the game (at least ten as of this writing). They are listed as BIN and cost a little under $10 after shipping. Just nabbed one for myself. Just a FYI for anyone out there that wants a physical copy of this game.

I remember winning this as a twerp in a first-level demo of sorts. I think ranking was sorted by % of the screen you found, and I got top 10-20 by finding the hidden area in the top right corner. Took a little finangling after they sent In Pursuit of Greed instead, bleck.

I loved this game as a kid; never noticed the lack of music since my first speakers came post 00', so I had a habit of playing games with my own soundtrack of choice (on my CD/cassette playing hi-fi) - this one went well with powermetal; W.A.S.P and Helloween... =D

another great video is always lgr! I remember my friend having a copy of this at his house and that's how I got introduced to this game specifically. since then I was able to track down a full copy and beat it all the way through. it was a great game for the time and I agree that the Aesthetics were freaking awesome. it's too bad this game didn't get a series of its own but I am glad that we still have games from this arrow that still go on to this day anyway. that's something that I can be thankful for.

The simple solution to the music problem is make a mix CD (if you're old school like me. We even used tape cassettes back in the day for doing this) or if you're a modern person, make a folder in your music player of choice of awesome heavy, pounding, industrial music, and set that player on endless replay while playing. That's how us old school video gamers used to have to soundtrack our games that had no music. You kids who never grew up with video games in the 70's and early 80's have it easy.

Pretty hardcore, digging the style. I wonder how hard it would be to get the rights and re-built this in a modern engine. Leave the normal-looking sprites as-is, swap out all the pre-rendered stuff with actual models and get the guy that did the 2016 Doom soundtrack to compose some tunes for this. Awwww yeah. \m/ \m/

I was genuinly surprised that I've found it on Ebay for 6$ (shipping to Europe costs a bit, but it's still a good offer), even with this Softdisk's sleeve. I'm really charmed with this game, even such details like mimics of those friendly aliens is truelly outstanding. I love PC gaming for plenty of those "hidden gems" (and not only for this!).

At most I must have heard from this game, but this is the first time I see the game. I am not a big platformer fan, but the colourful graphics and smooth animation should have put this game high(er) in the rankings. Respect to the VGA artists who did the graphics. It reminds me also a bit to the graphics used in the game Tyrian. Actually I feel like this was a period in the mid 90's where the (few of the last) more advanced/smooth animated VGA games were released. And then the transition to (Windows) SuperVGA (higher resolution) and accelerated graphics started and leaving behind the VGA DOS-era.

Robert Elkins It's not _that_ forgettable. Hexen's system of hub levels was frustrating and confusing, and the only differences between characters was hard they hit and what they did with flechettes.

This game came out about 2-3 years later than it should have, it looks like a game that belongs in 93.

tldr: If it was on pc before the year 2000, it was going to be behind. If you go to DOS platformers in 1993, you get stuff like duke nukem 2, which itself might look behind. The thing is that from the 70s to the 90s pc games were always behind consoles, Sometimes up to 10 years, due to a lack of dedicated hardware for games in them. It took iD and apoggee and programming wizardary to close the gap, and even then, it wasn't until the mid-2000s and steam before there was anything representing parity between pcs and consoles, even when pc hardware got better and cheaper, it took the efforts of steam to make it convenient. The only reason PCs are so viable this gen is because consoles messed up thier strengths, and PCs have done everything they can to shore up thier weaknesses. But even today win10 is a nightmare for graphics card drivers. For 1996, a platformer with this much detail on Pc was actually ahead of the curve, 3D was only beginning to come with 3D graphics cards and quake, and both of those were expensive and top of the line for thier time. Meanwhile, super mario 64 was only using some of the power of the 64, but had smoother animations and didn't have the pixelation that software-rendered quake did. Even top of the line of PC still didn't always compare to an average console game at the time.

Do you remember a dos game where you go up this huge office building shooting or killing, I don't remember that well, other office workers that were mind controlled and at the end you had to kill the alien on the roof? It was 3d and also super pixelated. It had allot of puzzles to get to the next floor.

Looks good. To me the most obvious inspiration seems to have been Turrican 2 (Amiga version specifically). All the elements are there as well.

I played the hell out of this game back in the days 😅 it's quite a hard game but what I loved about it was the action and fx. It never bothered me as a kid that there was no in-game music at all

Looks like a really solid game. It's a shame there's no music though. Strange design choice.
