Aliens are attacking and leave us no choice but to destroy their full motion video backdrops! Join the Earth Ocean Alliance in Deadly Tide, a 1996 on-rails shooter from Microsoft.
I get the desire go back and re-watch all your old reviews like once every year or so, hahah. I love this era of RU-vid and you've covered such a great selection of obscure games that no one else has really touched on.
The ending= "We blew all our money on the full motion video and we're overbudget and late with the arrival date so let's push this thing out the door!!!"
Hey there, Rainbow Studios did have a sequel for this game in development, but it was in the form of a movie called Blue Planet. Rainbow went banktrupt and was attempting development as late as 2009, but the IP was sold to THQ around 2010, which is now owned by their now-defunct property. There were a few old sites that had some good HD images of some of the models and such. The story also picked up after the 1st game. Thanks to the aliens losing their foothold of Earth, EOA now has the task of cleaning up, along with checking out the rest of the solar system to see what else had happened. From the screenshots and the trailer it looked very promising. If it wasn't for the bankruptcy, it would've been released.
Blue Planet had a trailer and it's one of the worst I've ever seen. It mocks Pixar movies which are remembered a lot more than it even is. It tries to be all dark and mature but doesn't tell you much about the actual movie.
One cool feature of Deadly Tide was that it included the soundtrack by composer Mark Stratford on disk 4. He also did the music for a number of other titles from Rainbow Studios, including The Hive. For a time when game music still was light years from the orchestrated scores that we have now that can be on par with the quality of motion pictures, it was an impressive contribution.
Dude - I gotta say that I love your channel. About 90% because of the awesome content - it's like a time machine back to my childhood. But also because you have such an amazing voice. Seriously - you should consider doing voice work for cartoons or movies or something.
The game had such a good high paced orchestral soundtrack, which was included in full as cd tracks on the forth disc! Oh I listened to it for hours and hours as a kid...
I remember when my friend got Windows 95 and showed me the Weezer video, believing it was actually a clip from Happy Days, and he was like 'Music was so much better back then. '
MS included a flyer in the box, advertising "Deep in the ocean you'll have everything under control with the MS Precision Pro Joystick"...which was a pretty good joystick. 4 Axis, 8 Buttons, POV ... for a game that only uses 2 buttons and is better played with mouse in the first place. This Xmas I learned that graphics are not everything and that commercials are complete bullshit.
Dudeee this game was my jammm! I used the joystick and played this shit all the time pretending I was in the ship and everything, fuck man such a great game
Meanmanturbo! That's it! Oh man I've been looking for this game forever! Incoming was the bomb! I used to spend days on this game. Loved all of the missions and vehicle types.
I would love to see you cover the Terminal Velocity trilogy at some point. I was a big fan of Fury3, and I enjoyed the short stint I took in Hellbender. Actually, classic Terminal Reality games were kind of neat, before they became a Kinect game developer.
The split second before that pilot said "Welcome to Earth", a hogshead of cliches stormed into my brain: "I'm gettin' too old for this shit." "That's going to leave a mark." "Tell my wife I love her very much." "She knows!" "Get off my plane!" "Give me back my son!"
You have a great voice to fall asleep to. I'm one of those people that leaves Netflix running all night, but I never used to do it with RU-vid. I've been doing it with these videos lately though and I gotta say, it's working great. It's fun to see which random game review I wake up to every morning. Today is Deadly Tide!
When i was 11 year old, this game made me fall in love with those kind of games, its a simple concept and actually fun to play, i own a old pentium 3 pc now and i have this game installed, it indeed shows its age, but its quite charming, its fun to go back in time sometimes
I think it's worth mentioning that Deadly Tide started its life as a movie tie-in game...except the movie, Blue Planet, was never finished, with what had been completed being repurposed into Deadly Tide. That might explain the incoherent story and the lack of an ending. You can actually find the trailer for Blue Planet on RU-vid if you look hard enough!
This was meant to be a tie in game for a movie called "blue planet" also developed by rainbow studios. Sadly that got canceled (sorry if someone already posted this)
For a moment I was hoping this would be a review of "The Daedalous Encounter", which I really enjoyed playing back in the day and they shared a somewhat similar theme. Better ending though! ;D
Man, I played this game a bunch as a child, even with the option of better games like Doom II and Hellbender. The soundtrack is killer. The setting is imaginative. It has the absolute sickest UNDERWATER CARRIER and UNDERWATER FIGHTERS a young boy could ever dream of. And the alien architecture was gross and weird enough to feel threatening. Plus, you got to steal and fly a cool alien fighter! Like any good Saturday morning cartoon plot. I loved it.
I remember back in days when I played first time DT - man! Soundtrack and graphics just crushed my little child mind! Thanks to this game i start learning 3D :) And now I'm 3D artist in full time :)
Both Deadly Tide and Independence Day were released in 1996 - which one came up with the 'Welcome to Earth' finisher first? Or is it just some astronomical coincidence...😧

I sure remember Hover and played for so many hours, and that Good Times sound clip, even searched for it many years later... Don't remember that Tide game tought.
I thought I should ask you since you are the king of 90's era pc games. There was a game that came bundled with our pc (maybe late 96/97) that was very similiar to this but it wasnt pre-rendered it was a space game where you got to attack aliens in three or four different vehicles (different vehicle for different stages) : tank, helicopter, jet, and something else. All first person and graphics were awesome for the time. Techno music soundtrack if i remember. Any ideas?
Great commentary. You're good. I'm ex-Microsoft. Got every game from that era, and a machine to still run them. Dont forget the super spiff sidewinder controllers. I still think the first version of Motocross Madness is the top shelf. They spent quite a bit on the soundtrack.
I remember this game trailer. Parts of it were in that "Where do you wanna go today?" video with that rockin tune. And Ialso rmember having hellbender as a demo. It was a lot of fun. Took me years to work out what it was.
loved this game as a kid. Reason for the game ending the way it did, was because there was SUPPOSED to be a movie sequel, called Blue Planet. by Rainbow Studios. it never got finished. boo... Honestly would love a sequel game to this. could be pretty cool.
What I want to know is if that one dude who wished you good luck at the end was actually Captain James Cutter, and this was all an elaborate teaser trailer for HALO years later.
I never even knew this demo was on the Win95 CD. We actually got a demo of a FMV game with our Packard Bell called Silent Steel. My father liked it so much, he actually bought the full game! I also have a copy of Star Trek: Borg around here somewhere too.
:) THANK YOU, Not sure if you saw my last comment on one of your videos.. "yeh i know very descriptive" but i asked if you could review the games that was on the windows 95 CD sampler aka Odyssey. im not sure if deadly tide was on there. But i sure as hell remember it. thanks, for conciously or sub-conciously fulfilling my request.
At the guy who said do a hellbender review. Oh yeah! I still remember getting this with my dad and brother at Sams many years ago on a rainy day. I think it was dual game pack and they came together :) Wonderful memories.
I believe you should totally perform a review of the original elite game. It's a complete classic of the space sim genre. I saw you had it on your shelf in one of your vids and thought that it's time for a proper review. Especially that it's latest sequel is still going strong and I don't see you doing any classic space sim reviews. Could be a nice change.
Since you are on this lovely FMV game tangent, do you think you could take a look at MegaRace 1 and 2? If you don't happen to have a copy it is on GOG.
I guess it depends on who's getting restrained: I'd prefer soft flexible rope to being handcuffed, but handcuffs are easier to put on and take off if your doing the restraining.
Hi. As English is not my native language, I didn't understand what you said about Hellbender. I liked this game, it was pretty cool, though too easy, with a lot of exploration in huge "dungeons". Will you test it ?
Oh god. Those old Windows demo discs were amazing. There was an old Top Down RPG on one of them once called earth something or another, I was sad I lost that disc because I can never found that game ever again and really enjoyed it =(
Was The Hive on that Windows 95 companion disc? Somehow it sounds extremely familiar and I'm pretty sure I used to play the shit out of that companion disc.
@LGR I recommend looking at the "Archimedean Dynasty" (Schleichfahrt) Games and Aquanox. Came out also in 1996 but had way more freedome, story and whatsoever.
I remember seeing the trailer of this game on a demo disc, in a PC game magazine. I thought the graphics in the game was just as good as an Hollywood movie. I never knew this game was just a rail-shooter.
Great review with some good humor! The Hive actually came out on the original Playstation, but it was definitely NOT made for the controllers! I'm not sure if it works with the Playstation mouse.
This is weird, I just found out about this game yesterday on movie tropes, and now you are reviewing it. Apparently this was supposed to be a game based on a CG movie that got canceled. The trailer for the movie poked fun at Toy Story and A Bugs Life, and kills The ant guy and Buzz Lightyear. I forgot the name of the movie but it was something planet I think.
I remember watching my dad play this when I was little because I sucked at it. I remember when we beat it we had the reaction of "oh...well...at least we saved the planet"
Hey LGR, have you ever heard of a pc game called 'Ravage'? It came out around '96 or '97 I believe, and pit you against bizarre looking aliens. Also, I believe it was first-person.
You forgot to mention they tried to make a movie sequel two years later (called Blue Planet) but that didn't pan out. The trailer is in youtube. Not sure if it would mention the first game (let alone solve the cliffhanger ending) but I would gather that's a fair asumption. BTW, I didn't know it STILL worked in modern systems. I still have my copy. Let me try it out (and hope the discs aren't damaged)
also ever play Gahan Wilson's Haunted House for Windows 95 and 98 (might even be for DOS) it was a halloween-themed point and click adventure where you could create your own frankenstein monster, craft items, make recipes, collect and trade items and more. you need to find the 13 keys to the grandfather clock in the lobby before 13 o clock in the game or else you get boarded up into the haunted house for all eternity. check it out if you haven't!
Have you heard of the game Ice and Fire by GT Interactive? Thats little like FMV, with a bit of a Doom clone on the side. Also uses little puzzle elements, takes some understanding.
