LGR - Fire & Ice - Amiga & DOS Game Review

There's just something special about certain platform games and Fire & Ice is one of them. The solid gameplay, great environments, cheery audio and searing difficulty combine to make a memorable experience that can be a joy to experience. An arctic coyote that shoots balls from his mouth and somehow stole large portions of my childhood awaits...
Fire and Ice The Daring Adventures of Cool Coyote reviewed on a 1MB A500
Covers the Commodore Amiga, IBM PC, Atari ST, CD32 and Sega Master System versions. My apologies to Acorn, but it's their fault for having such a hard to find machine, the Archimedes, resulting in me not being able to find the game for it. If anyone has this version, let me know as I'd love to see it!

@spleenandpie Never been to Europe actually, I just have a high respect and interest for their gaming culture. I haven't always lived in the USA though, living in the Caribbean for a while where almost everything is from PAL-land. I gained my first exposure to the stuff while living there and it just jump-started what was already a slight interest.

Amazing that George rr Martin based his entire universe on this video game.

Some games on the Amiga were programmed to take advantage of controllers with extra buttons... Apidya comes to mind. But yeah, typically it's a one-button affair, with any further buttons delegated to the keyboard, and that kinda sucks.
@LGR
@LGR 11 лет назад
1. Game-saving is only available on the DOS version, not the Amiga or others. 2. If you're having trouble with key pieces after level 1, then that's probably the copy protection coming into play. Make sure to enter the copy protection code sheet info correctly or you won't be able to get pieces on level 2.

It's weird to see these old videos because I have been following LGR since around this time and I remember seeing this when it was posted maybe 6 months ago at the time. I'm around the same age and grew up with PC gaming so I always related to this channel. This is the only RU-vid channel I have followed for almost 10 years. Seeing now how far Clint has come. I remember getting excited when this channel got half a million and then about a couple of years ago when it was getting so close to 1 million and then finally reaching that milestone. I would check everyday to see if it finally hit 1 million and just being so excited when it did. He has done all the work, but I feel like I've been on this journey with this channel. It's hard to put to words. Proud of this channel.

@tombert256 Yup, this is very different than Tecmo's "Fire 'n Ice" and GT's "Ice and Fire". Confusing names, so this one's often referred to as "Cool Coyote in Fire & Ice". This is one of those games I think would make having a CD32 worth owning, if I could ever find a decent deal on a PAL machine. Or maybe NTSC would work, who knows.

@tv77355 It's cool that you want to see a certain game. Just nicely ask once and I'll think about it. But the way you (and many others) have said the same thing over and over like it's some kind of right of yours to expect specific free content from me, that I do on my own personal time without any compensation, is grating. I never promised any sort of review. I'll try, but all I can only do so much. I'm sorry if it's not always your requested game, but what seem like demands aren't encouraging.

@SteveBenway I would love to see your view on it if you ever get the chance/feel bothered to do so. The floaty controls really are a huge burden for a while and if I hadn't played it endlessly as a youngster I might not like it nearly as much. It is a very rewarding experience whenever you do finish it though, even if you need to use a trainer to do it!

I believe I got my hands on a shareware version of this game once. The graphics and style was certainly nice, but gameplay-wise it wasn't all that great. The Jazz Jackrabbit games were better. Most platform games on Windows were a disappointment compared to console games like the NES/SNES though.

I seem to recall there was a 4-button Gravis Gamepad that had four buttons - two of which are seperate buttons in games that support them, and two of which replicate the function of "up" and "down" which make playing games like this, which use up to jump, less of a pain.

AHHHHHHH SO *THAT'S* WHAT THAT THING'S FROM! I've had a gif of the map across the bottom of the screen there for YEARS and always thought it was gorgeous pixel art, never could figure out if it was from some actual old game or just some random old game map-like thingie someone made for the heck of it. Well that's one mystery solved.

@Winstet420 Back in the day it retailed for £25.99. I bought my Amiga boxed copy for about 15 dollars with shipping from the UK to the US, and the IBM PC boxed copy for about 50 dollars shipped from Australia.

Regarding Rainbow Islands: in much of Europe the NES - and with it Super Mario Bros - was a lot less popular and less common. Rainbow Islands (and other games like its stablemate New Zealand Story), on the other hand, was available both on arcades and the locally popular home computers, so they took a lot more of the spotlight. Additionally, the home computer ports of Rainbow Islands only got released in 1990, only 2 years prior to Fire & Ice, so it was still rather recent; but Rainbow Islands is refered to here not because any specific similarity but because it was the "previously best platformer" - sort of how Doom was for first person shooters.

You're totally right. Those time-limit balls of fire are indeed creepy... I remember I used to rush to the end of the level because I didn't want to hear that sound... I don't think I've ever beaten the second castle...

@MrMinecrafterEXTreme I'm not sure what you mean. The Amiga game? No, it's an Amiga game. If you mean the DOS game, then probably. It depends on your PC specs. CPU, RAM, graphics, etc. Chances are if it runs Windows 95 it'll run it, but it really works better with a pure DOS environment.
@LGR
@LGR 13 лет назад
@Ubersnuber Oddly enough I often think that of Amiga games. So often games look like they were obviously built in Deluxe Paint. But with the PC I can see uniqueness in nearly every older game, since so many new tricks were being used. It's all subjective.

It's such a shame the Amiga wasn't pushed more in America. Commodore really dropped the ball on that and so many Americans missed out on some classic gaming experiences, a friendly community, great spirit and such creative potential that consoles couldn't offer.

@MaximumRD Yes, I remember a friend bring an amiga to show at school, the graphics blew me away and I instantly fell in love. I proceeded to cover the walls of my room in pictures of it and it's games as a hint to my parents, but, they never could afford it. I now have a 1200 and a 600, both of which have bad hard disks :o(

The Amiga controller actually handled up to two buttons. If you stick in a Sega Megadrive / Genesis pad, you can use B as the first button, and then C for your second button. Turrican 2 works great using this ... but still as you mentioned, "up" is to jump.

I never had the full game back then, just a playable demo (only the first level) but I played it many many times. Have you ever played the Turrican series on the Amiga, and especially Turrican II? It was simply one of the very best Amiga platformers back then, and still is, with incredible musics by master Chris Hülsbeck.

@janmansde3dede Well more power to you if you prefer a joystick. I prefer to play where I enjoy myself, and after using a joystick for hours I still hated it. It was just too awkward holding up, and pressing and holding buttons and directions for differing times to shoot the weapons.

How I hate the way old PC games look. It's like the limited pixel rendering made all games have the same overall look or something. The Unreal 3 engine today, but for totally different reasons, if you will. The Amiga, on the other hand, oh my! This game is a looker!

I dunno about this game in particular, but things trying to kill you if you take too long is just an arcade thing in general, Berzerk did it too. Spelunky could have gotten that from the era as a whole. As for other stuff, quite possibly, but wouldn't be shocked if other games did it too.

This looks very cool. Any idea how the Atari ST version compares? I wonder if it is as colorful! That persistent map is sneakily distracting. You can kind of ignore it, but then when you are weak you'll look down at it and it's like, what the heck is this doing here? Cool Coyote rocks the keys. Kind of like Rick Wakeman c.1972 mixed with...Rick Wakeman c.1978. ???

The bad thing about the Amiga was the fact that there was one button only, it´s very shitty to move the joystick up to jump,totally antiergonomic(specially with a joypad) and most of the time there wasn´t any option available to change that thing.Nowadays with my emulator I still push the X button on my dual shock like an idiot thinking that it will make the sprite jump...poor me!LOL
