@@Rubacund native americans left monuments dating back into Europe's bronze age. We have had advanced civilization in literally all corners of the globe long before anyone learned how to use steel... think about it in terms of modern governments, and USA becomes more middle aged.

Big nug of kush I kind of disagree i mean it got a chuckle at me a few times when used as a joke but Like Travis said it's almost become a joke to use the song it's self. It gets kind of cringe worthy at times. I can't tell if people are using it as a joke or being unironic now.

The dithering in the graphics is really well done. They used it everywhere. I'd swear this game used more than 16 colours as long as my screen was small enough

There really is a certain charm to DOS that can't really be replicated. Clicking or tapping somehow doesn't feel as satisfying as operating a computer with knowledge of syntax and deftly-typed keystrokes. In DOS, no one can hear you scream xD

Shockwave oh how i remember the excitement in elementary school and Org eon trail was available to play during library study time. the joy of just putting in the floppy and immediately turning the power switch off then on again to play was one of the best feelings i still remember to this day. can't really compare it to anything though :)

The American Victory ending in this game is beautiful, it will give the player some goosebumps for sure, I only regret i've never been able to see the second ending, that one can be achieved if the Americans hold out until 1820, that's when the King of Britain dies, but it takes forever to get there in this game due to long waiting when you end your turn

Wouldn't really work, given combat was less slicing and more shooting... then again, Koei didn't do a Hundred Years War strategy game but still released Bladestorm all the same.

There was one game Koei made it was called Bladestorm which the setting is in the 100th year war (England vs France medieval) rather than slashing through your you command a small squad to fight

FlawedIntellect Of course, but that is the typical American-style Beer. You can't claim that Stout, Ale or Dark Lager is typically American. But then again, Americans usually don't care wether they actually invented the thing they claim represents them, or if they just nicked it from someone else. Just like with Apple Pie.

Since so few of the comments bother talking about the game, let me be the first to say that if you like the old Koei style, you'll love LoD. That said, it takes real commitment to get through it. There's a lot to manage, and it's incredibly difficult. Just make sure Nathanael Greene is around the most hotly contested areas. That guy is a monster.

I loved the SNES version of this as a kid! Though, I must admit, having the free time as a kid to grapple with all of the complex systems no doubt helped build my appreciation of it. Plus the superior graphics of the SNES version didn't hurt either. Thanks for covering it!

When I think of Koei, I automatically think of Dynasty Warriors over their more strategy-based games like Kessen and ROT3K. Would love to tear up a battlefield DW-style as George Washington and Ben Franklin, doing sick air combos and stuff.

I've always enjoyed the ideas of these Koei strategy games, Romance of the Three Kingdoms and the like, but I've always found them so very difficult to approach. Managing your army is -really- hard as it turns out, so I'd have to read a comprehensive guide to understanding it. Buuut I've also been spoiled by the much more simplistic fair of the Advanced Wars series and Civilization V, so there's that.

This is obvi the PC version, but when this game came out on Sega Genesis it was great. It's my 3rd favorite Koei strategy game after Gemfire and Romance of the Three Kingdoms 7.

I played the heck out of this game on the SNES. Very similar to Romance of the Three kingdoms and Nobanaga's Ambition (but not as fun for me at least). Really good game. The SNES version had separate turn based battle maps like the other two games I mentioned. It was alot better than this DOS version looks.

I played several KOEI games from the late 80s to early 90s on the PC and ST. Great games and more presentation value than most other strategy games of the period. The only problem was that they were all very similar. Not my favorite games of the time (though I was a huge huge strategy/wargame gamer even back then), but they were definitely good games.

I remember playing Nobunaga's Ambition, for the original Game Boy of all things. That was also by Koei, and actually had a lot of fun with it. For some reason I was weirdly able to keep ol' Oda alive in the now-unified Japan till 1746! I wonder if I could have kept a zombie Washington going till the modern day in this game? Or would he have declared, once seeing how things are REALLY run in government, simply said "Uh death, please."?

Have you played Colonization? It's a game from Sid Meir, came after Civilization but it based on the settling of America (or a randomly generated land) with the player eventually going for independence from their parent European power. Highly recommend.

This looks like a lot of fun. The thing that always kept me from Romance of the Three Kingdoms was the lack of context. I bought an annotated copy of the novel and someday I'll read it through and maybe then I can finally make heads or tails of the game. At least with this I have some history classes to help. LOL

Man you need to review shortline railroad for dos. It seems like a even crappier version of history stuff compared to this. Plus awesome 8bit sounds too from what I can tell. It was randomly in my grandmother's floppies(which with me growing up in the 90's I'm wondering when she would've had a dos pc...), she had quite a few "shareware" titles. It's actually kinda funny....

If you have any, you should do more videos on the classic Koei games especially Uncharted Waters (or New Horizons) if you have them. Not many people talk about these games anymore but they are still awesome.
