No. :( I had no optimism. I was sure EA was going to fuck it all up hard, especially after Societies (bleck). As soon as I see EA is the publisher of something my mind goes to "Well, better wait for a bunch of reviews first before I decide to even invest any time in thinking about getting it."
After playing the beta of SimCity 2013, I was sure the game was going to be a flop. The game wasn't even alpha quality during the beta! I felt like the game was being rushed out as some kind of EA sudo kickstarter. As far as I know, SimCity 2013 never supported Fullscreen (Windowed) mode, which was a basic and common feature even then!? It was frustrating having a game act like a game from the year 2000.
+lies damnlies Societies wasn't made by EA, nor was it a full game or a title in the main series. It was a spinoff sold at a reduced price compared to the actual series and made from some contracted 3rd party dev focusing more on social issues than city building.
Sim City 4 was the last great sim city sadly. When they started making all the terrible ones I'll never forget what EA officially told the fans who called them out on it. "Sim City is moving away from simulator based play as this is a niche market and we want to broaden the base of sim city fans" --EA. Thankfully they were proven dead wrong when Cities Skylines came out and out sold all of the sim cities since sim city 4. Lesson for game developers: DO NOT ALIENATE YOUR CORE FAN BASE.
But it's EA if they aren't making half a billion dollars off of it than it is not a successful game and must be reworked to "appeal" to the largest market possible, or in most cases completely drive it into the ground and kill the studio with micro transactions.
Unfortunately to “broaden the appeal” of a game often means To rework a game in such a way that those who love the franchise will now hate it, but possibly those who didn’t like it/know about it might, possibly, LIKE it. That is beyond foolish and will end up killing game franchises yet so many developers insist on going down this path. In the end greed ruins everything
I can’t believe this video is a decade old. I feel like we don’t get videos like this anymore in RU-vid. There would be 100 sponsorships about VPNs cluttering half of it
I loved having that possibility as a child, but also confused me, like how come Sim City is already in it fourth entry when Sims is only in its second? Obviously Sim City takes its name from the Sims so Sims must have come first!
I just realized that Will Wright has some serious ADD. He makes a game, finds a portion of it more enjoyable than the rest, and makes it into a full-fledged game of its own! And we all love him for it.
yeah...but the mind set for really any innovation is the idea, Hey I bet someone would like this.....now whether or not the intended market SEES the value or not, is a completely different story. That's people say some things were ahead of their times. The market was either too short sighted to see what they had, the inventor didn't have enough ambition/charisma to properly market it, religious/political BS prevented it from catching on or actively stomped it out, etc.
The SimCity 4 music (and to a lesser extent SimCity 3000's music) is just so good for relaxing, kicking back, or just for...anything. The music just has a perfect feel, and I listen to it all the time while on my laptop or in the car.
***** Music from SimCity 2000? I'm not sure, but it's probably one of the versions of SimCIty or SimCity 2000, considering the subject of the video and it's MIDI quality.
+zazarays It's called 'Railroad Rap' from 2000, there's a few variants of it depending on the version but I think the one here is from the SNES game (watch?v=muEIijrt4vo).
I worked for Maxis back in 97 when EA took over. Everyone in our studio was promptly laid off the next day. All our projects were either cancelled or given to other studios and had our names removed from the credits. One of the other folks from the Walnut Creek main office quit (or whatever) and formed a media company and hired me on as a graphic artist. I remember he had that original "Godzilla-like" toy that was featured in the original box art sitting on his desk. I will never forgive EA for effectively ending my career in the video game industry.
Skylines just feels too easy even if you get a hardmode mard that makes everything more expensive and well "harder" I have yet to fail in a city I've built but in SimCity 4 I'd overlook some small issue early on then next thing you know I'd be bankrupt because of it.
This. I found deluxe for $5 at a thrift store and with the mods I ended up putting years and hundreds of hours into it. Made some crazy interchanges that couldn’t really be utilized in game to the max due to the software placed limitations for how far people were willing to commute for work. Cities skyline can more easily make these interchanges and utilize them better but I still think SC4 plain looked better.
I don't even consider SImCity 2013 SimCity 5. My main reasoning being that the backward compatibility feature of being able to forward port your cities that had existed since the original game was just GONE. I could have forgiven it if it had been worth playing...
Gumball Yeah, true. The thing is, though, Cities: Skylines is pretty much the "true" sequel to SimCity 4; the sequel we all wanted all along. If you're not aware, this guy actually made a video on that recently.
@@wta1518 yeah, the main issue with cities skylines is they keep making crappy dlcs with a whole bunch of things that really should've been in the base game.
Watching this years later has a different feel. The game has a rich and storied history but I cringed when he mentioned they sold it to EA. Watching now we know it's going to have a tragic ending and EA kills the golden goose once again.
Hopefully, you also grew up and realized that Will Wright was a f u c k i n g Atheist moron that did not understand how religion plays vital roles in how cities are built, as well as avoided his mistakes on city building, like ignoring the existence of the agricultural zone, mixed usage zones, or certain buildings and facilities like ambulance service centers (yes, they can exist outside of hospitals, as well as inside of them), school bus garages/parking lots, city bus garages/parking lots, malls, sewage treatment plants, scrap yards, junk yards, recycling centers, waste disposal plants, etc., and The Sims was even worse about that whole barring religion thing, as, like it or not, a. Atheism is ironically still a religion, regardless of the claims and protests otherwise on the matter, and b. the 'real life simulation" of the people that are in those games where such a thing is a priority is about as realistic as a scripted Hollywood television show, or, more accurately, some pseudo-reality drivel like Big Brother, Survivor, Jersey Shore, etc. I, for one, want to build a far more realistic city building simulation game that fixes not only the flaws of the Sim City games, but also those flaws in other games of its related ilk, and The Sims as well.
In 1992 I worked for a large real estate development company for a time, and was an assistant to a honcho who was in charge of this whole planned community they were building. She told me, to my great surprise, how she was really into this video game SimCity. Because she definitely didn't seem like a gamer. She explained she could set things up and see how they worked. Her development has grown into a whole town now!
Man, I loved SimCity enhanced CD-ROM. Those cheesy videos while you were playing were the coolest thing when I was a kid. I still love playing that game in dosbox!
Ahh I remember getting overwhelmed by sim city 3000 and never knowing what Todo and just being broke so used to mess with cheats but sim city 2000 different story entirely I had it for the game boy advance and I loved it and spent so many many hours playing to the point I managed to build a hole city kept earning money and balance everything basically beating the game still have my copy to this day with my save file was such a fantastic game and my favourite in the series
Haha I was watching this and didn't realize it was a ten year old vid. So when LGR got to the simcity reboot, I didn't expect him to say we will have to wait and see to see if it's any good. Quality vid that's a decade old.
I know this is a bit late in the game to mention it but there was a port of SimCity 2000 to Windows CE/Pocket PC 2002. It ran just like the Windows version and save files were compatiable between the two. I was amazed the find it when I was in high school and had all the same music and graphics, just on a tiny touch screen in your pocket to boot. I haven't seen it mentioned so I thought I'd throw it out there. It had the issue of costing $30 USD at the time with SimCity 3000 already being out on the market.
angelived Yeah, that is correct, actually, and just like the Beatles, SimCity (the overall series, not counting the new one) really blew away millions of people worldwide and just like the Beatles, it's legacy is still strong to this day.
I'm so glad you mentioned the enhanced CD version of Sim City. It's my easily my favorite version. Those FMV sequences were horrendous and awkward and oh so wonderful.
The Sims was released in 2000, and then The Sims 2 in 2004. I think it's pretty sad that they never continued the series and never released The Sims 3, 4 and 5!
hey man just wanted to let you know your vids are great and I can tell u put a lot of effort into them. I live in NC too and its cool to think one of my favorite youtubers is in the same state. keep up the great content!
Great vid, thanks for putting this together. You're one of the few who has thoroughly complied all the old games and gameplay footage. I've been playing SimCity since the early Windows and SNES days, this brought back a lot of good memories.
I think it would make since if it was 'Sim life" and not The Sims where everyone in the game is called "Sims" which is awkward if you call them by their full names.
Sparks (Pichu 90) It had the name Dollhouse at one point during it's development. It was changed to the Sims just as branding and as an additional note. The Icon Plumbomb was not featured in the first game on it's cover art but now it's as essential for the image as the name itself.
I really enjoyed this video. It brought back so many memories. I really miss being able to manufacture my own terrain as well as being able to drive through view your own city. Keep up the great job.
Sim City 3000 Deutschland was so awesome! I loved the scenarios so much. The other located scenarios such as "London Fires" and similar were also fun but even from an international perspective they stand no chances against the reunification of Berlin! It was so cool to demolish the Berlin Wall, connect the separated infrastructure and renovate the fucked up eastern Berlin. I missed such scenarios in SC4 (even though I loved the game because of the mod community). The scenario of "A better Betterfeld" (?) was also amazing because it is based on the real story of Bitterfeld - maybe the city with the lowest environmental life quality in whole central Europe (and it is so clean, calm, modern and green today!). Don't have to talk about SC2013. Societies had it's moments but was to limited in all points.
I remember going over to a friends house and playing sim city 4, with the rush hour expansion and destroying his city with one of the helicopters that you could fly. He was so pissed that I didn't go over to his house for an entire month
Brendan Clark I remember leaving Sim City 4 running on my laptop while I went out so I didn't have to endure the loading time. When I came back I discovered to my horror that my aunt had closed the laptop lid while the game was running which corrupted the game and the hard drive ;-;
SimCity 3000 for sure was such a good game. I can remember as I jumped of the chair after seeing that Ive got my first population. It was such a great feeling :D
Agree 4 wasn’t terrible but 3000 unlimited was good, there was a sc3000 version that was NOT unlimited it wasn’t so great. Cities skylines is a masterpiece though, what sim city should have been.
I played the original game in my computer lab in school. Move forward to about 1994, I broke my arm while being teenager. My mother surprised me with a super nes and sim city. I think I lived on that system and game thru that winter. Memories.. thank you.
I really don't understand why Maxis doesn't release a commercial down load of Sc3000 Unlimited since there is a download for every other game in the main series.
You can come upon free titles if savvy enough, my point was being with current EA with downloadables and their store. If i am wrong please correct me. I am a huge fan of using Virtual box, but if we truly want to appreciate these games, we should make sure it is accessible to a modern audience.
Mom was shocked and my dad was laughing like crazy when the clam donuts video clip played in the game. My young innocent mind had no clue what the big deal was. 🤣🤣🤣
So after like six years, this video popped back up in my feed and inspired me to waste an entire Saturday afternoon...it turns out Simcity 3000 works on Windows 10 with minimal effort! That was a nice dose of nostalgia. Thanks
My introduction to the Sim City franchise was the SNES version. I rented it from my local mom 'n' pop video store (anyone remember video stores? lol) and fell absolutely in love. It was at the very top of that year's Christmas list. I got my very own copy and PLAYED THAT SUCKER TO DEATH. I later got all the main sequels on various consoles. My first PC version was SC 4, and I loved the heck out of it. I actually put quite a lot of hours into SC 2013, and while it had some really interesting new mechanics, it was undoubtedly a step back in many ways for the franchise. It's really sad that Sim City is now (probably?) well and truly dead. But at least we have Cities: Skylines.
I just bought SimCity 4 because of this video. I was never really into the Simcity games, I'm a HUGE Sims fan though. I would have gotten SimsCity 2013 but after hearing mediocre it is, among other annoying things, I'll just stick to the classics.
It's actually a pretty decent game. The problem is that map sizes are limited, there are no building sets, too much emphasis on multiplayer, and not enough "god mode" aspect. But I mean--it's still an enjoyable game. I've clocked 60+ hours in it.
Good Decision! Then maybe you want to look for some custom content. New stuff is created even now 11 years after the initial release. That contains new buildings, various fixes for several bugs in the vanilla game and even new network types (the Network Addon Mod). Therefore you should take a look at simtropolis.com where most stuff is released (more than 18000 files right now), whilst at sc4devotion.com/csxlex you get high quality content only, which might be better for the beginner. In order to download stuff you have to sign up at both sites.
True. And it doesn't offer much in terms of replayability, either. Once you reach the edges of the map and have achieved everything (which can be done in a day) the game is done.
Sim City 3000 will always be my favorite. Detailed yet simple. All they needed to do was keep updating graphics but they just kept adding and changing shit nobody asked for, leading to the games of today like Cities Skylines where you need to be a literal city planner to properly build a city. Simply too much work required.
I think Sim City Societies is very well crafted, though it seems to not have gotten the same attention as others in the series. It looks great even now, it has tons of cool and varied buildings, and even if it's a smaller scale game, it's a fun one. It had a fantastic soundtrack. Some of those tracks are stunning. Sim Town was great. My tutor gave it to me and I played it a lot on my Mac as a kid. It's a simple game that is good for kids but well designed and worth playing if you just wanna build a fun little town.
Hey LGR, since SimCity 3000 Unlimited is FINALLY on GOG, are you planning to Review it? It really deserves that. All those little Details ("A happy Sim is a produktive Sim" written on a Factory Wall, that hilarious Newsticker, the animations on some Buildings like a Vehicle driving around the Backyard of an Factory or the Military Base. And the Soundtrack is veeery Simlish, it's just a Masterpiece of a Game. Greetings.
Sim City 4 was my childhood. And now, Cities: Skylines is the best city builder ever made, and letting me relive my childhood without the need of rose-tinted glasses. Good stuff.
CountBassy SimCity4 was also the game of my childhood next to Minecraft. But Cities:Skylines wasn't that good in my opinion and have disapointd me alittle bit. But I also think that Cities:Skylines is still a fantastic game. But not that good like SimCity4
As far as I'm concerned the newest iteration of Sim City was a real let down that Sim City 2000 was and still is a vastly superior game even by today's standards. I'd say Sim City 4 was the best iteration of the series though. Hopefully when they come out with a new version of the game they stick to ever increasing complexity the series provided, larger maps, and better AI.
I had Simcity on the Commodore64 back in the late 80's when I was a kid.. I wasted so much of my holidays playing it. and Sim city2000 was really awesome. I Fricking loved it
