Hey! I'm the dude who runs the PokeLab! Thanks for the little feature in the video! Glad you enjoyed the Expo, Its always a fun time. Though setup and teardown are always a bit crazy!
@@LGR I do get a bit swamped during the Expo itself, as trading and sending Pokemon to people can take a decent amount of time, but I'm always willing to try and carve out some time to speak with people about it!
This expo really feels like it nails the balance between “professional” and “personable.” Usually you only get one at the expense of the other, and oftentimes you get neither! Looks rad.
You do a truly formidable voice-over once again, Clint, as usual: fluent, full of tidbits of info, knowledgeable, enthousiastic and with just the right amount of wit and humour. I could listen to and watch this kind of stuff all day. Your travel vlog was ace as well!
my god the amount of of CRT Screens is glorious. Feels like all we need is someone to record this con with a VHS Camcorder from the 90s and Boom this whole thing will feel like a Gaming Show from the 90s.
Im the guy that brought the Prologue 21s and most of the other Saturn stuff to the museum. Great to see someone giving my favorite parts of the show some attention. The amount of hardware all setup and usable at one place, much of it stuff the average guy would never get a chance to try out is amazing at this show.
thank you LGR for taking us along for the ride/tour I live in a very small Canadian city and we don't get anything like this hear or within a few hour drive.
we don't have shows like this at all in Denmark. At most there'll be some club gatherings, but nothing open to the public. Did however recently learn that there is a retro museum in a small town where we lived when I was little, on the other side of the country, so may have to go for a trip one day
@@thesteelrodent1796 I'm swedish and Retrospelsmässan in Gothenburg is the closest event like this that we get! I do recommend it, it's scheduled again this october :)
The Cradle of Aviation has become a Long Island staple. What Andy, Seamus and their teams have built is incredible and unique. It's been a lot of fun watching Retro-Com (along with Cradle-Con aka the Long Island Comic-con) grow each year. Great coverage of a great weekend LGR
I’m from LI and had no clue this was even a thing! It’s also so fun to watch someone dissect their visit to a museum i’ve gone to so many times throughout my life. Hope you enjoyed!
One of these days I’ll get a chance to go to one of these vintage computer or game conventions. I’ve been in the hobby forever and yet to go to any of the conventions. Thanks to you I at least get to see a glimpse of what to expect. You have the best festival/convention coverage on RU-vid. Hands down! Keep up the amazing work you do!
I grew up over there -- you are right, there is no easy way to walk around the event because of where it's located. A major university, Hofstra, is located there as well, and all of those students were in the same boat. Terrible for college. But the venue is a REALLY need place!
LOL - I live just up the road from this place along the north shore! My dad and I went to this place ALL THE TIME when I was a kid, though I never heard about the retro expo until recently after watching one of 8-Bit Guy's videos where he mentioned previously heading to it as well. Might come down one of these years to see what its all about! If anyone here is also a military history nerd like I am and has some time to spare - another great museum nearby in Bethpage is the Museum of American Armor. Lots of tanks, equipment, and ground vehicles that they sometimes do events and drive-arounds with!
I'd heard of this show before, but hadn't paid it much mind, but this video's sold me on it! A buddy and I are already talking about going next year. We're outside Ottawa, Canada and it's an 8 hour drive from my place to the museum's front door. The pinball free play alone is worth the trip for us and combine all this with an awesome aviation museum too? Hell yeah!
I was there on Saturday August 10th and it was my third year attending the show. I knew you were gonna be there but for some reason missed you. The show is huge so it's easy to miss stuff. The first year I was there I didn't even realize that they had stuff on the other floors. The museum itself is awesome. I've been going to events held there for over a decade.
As a person who lived on LI for 20 years, it's always great to see others visit the Cradle of Aviation and the LIRGE! I never got to go to the Expo, but some friends of mine would go starting a few years back. Did hear about it's founding during my Senior Year of HS though, and the College Professor for the Gaming Club at my campus was there from the beginning! Cradle of Aviation, I've been to PLENTY of times though, whether it be from Cub Scouts, School Field Trips, etc. I'll definitely try to go back to LI to visit the Expo, hope to meet you there sometime!
It took me like an hour to get through this video because I kept pausing to soak everything in! It's so dense, every single frame has so many things going on.
New York really always had to up to ante in just about everything, huh? This Expo looks amazing and has just about everything you'd want on a retro gaming expo. The only teeny-tiny gripe I didn't see is 90s Big Box games for sale. 😭😭 Other than that, you guys look like y'all had a fantastic week on this exhibit. Thank you for all the footage and IN-DEPTH detail on what this convention had to offer. LGR at his best! 😎
Oh! I watched a video from a Pokemon youtuber who went to this same event in order to do all the old event distributions you mentioned. What a great idea, I love it! Having it in such a cool space is just the cherry on top!
I went to the Cradle of Aviation all the time when I was a kid, I had no idea they did anything like this! Grew up on LI, but I haven't been home for more than like a day since like 2022
Glad you made it to Long Island! I lived there for 35 years, and while the pace of life is insane, it was interesting. I too would suggest Amtrack for visiting LI/NYC... driving in and out sucks!!! Hope you had fun!
I love when cons are in non-convention center spaces. It gives the con such a sense of personality! I believe there are several conventions in the Cradle of Aviation. I've never been, but I have friends who have. And my partner is from LI so he got a bit of a surreal experience seeing your footage from the con.
Wow, I can't believe the museum allows something like this. You would think the risk to the display's with all those people would be a big "NO" to hold a convention this large in it.
it's probably the better convention for them to hold as the people attending a retro convention will understand how fragile retro stuff is(well most of the time)
They actually hold a few cons at the museum. A psudo comic con, tabletop convention and the retro gaming convention. And they host meetups for local clubs. The cradle of aviation is super cool
I love even just the first 4 minutes of this video, thank you for even just a little bit to advocate for intercity and regional public transit and walkability. It’s always great to hear good urbanism takes from someone who makes content on completely different subjects.
I’m glad you enjoyed the show! I hope you come back next year and spend some time in my import stories area. I remember meeting you and your brother but when my brain is in show mode I have no idea who anyone is lol
You really captured the vibe of this unique and truly wonderful event. I feel very lucky to live so close to LIRetro and The Cradle of Aviation Museum. This I a very special event. Great meeting you again and thanks for the cameo 😂
Also big shout out to that incredible arcade and Anatoly’s work with the LAN party and PC setup. I really enjoyed some Quake on the LAN like we did in the 90’s!
This is so cool; This legit looks like one of the most interesting and unique convention venues for anything I've ever seen. I was in NY back in July, although I didn't explore Long Island. I'll have to check this museum, out next time for sure!
Oooh. This venue reminds me of the venue of this local Toy Convention I was at. The convention center was actually an old centrifuge used for training astronauts. The main room is actually the main centrifuge chamber. That was so cool just to walk through
16:33 seeing Tony Hawk as a 'retro' game on a CRT sure makes me feel old... remember feeling how it was literally the cutting edge playing on PC at university in 2001 as a 21 year old
I wouldn’t be surprised if retro games and toys of LI was there as a vendor. One of my favorite retro gaming stores and it’s inside of a strip mall in Levittown. Great video by the way, now I want to go to this next year.
would so love your brother to maybe start an episode off, trying to mimic you. I bet many people wouldn't notice. Think it would be funny as hell. At least he doesn't mind being on camera now. Epic trip and coverage. Really enjoyed your trip into NY.
I just want to say first off. You helped me and my daughter build a PC in 2020 and I am really FEELING the vibes on this video. I'm saying this with the most respect and love as a flight instructor and a train enthusiast, I love you're fandom of airplanes.
22:20 so glad to find a MSX there! The Panasonic A1WSX is a MSX 2+ only sold in Japan in early 90s, I bought one of these several years ago cause MSX 1 was my childhood computer, and it's my fave old computer. Thanks for the video resume, great job as always :)
I love these videos you make about different conventions and shows! I would love to visit a lot of them and you are showing all the great things there are to see! Keep up great videos and sharing your awesome adventures! I'm a huge fan and I admire your dedication to the presentation of technology and gaming history!
That convention looks better than VCF, the venue that’s a aviation museum that has arcades and other attractions! They have more video game platforms and tournaments.
The cradle of aviation is, literally, around the corner from where I work. As a history nerd I go there fairly often. LIRGEX (I think that’s their acronym?) is something that sees signs all the time. I always mean to try and go for one day, perhaps I will finally next year.
Oh I didn't know the Cradle of Aviation Museum hosted so many events. I once sold art at a comic convention that was held in it. The museum is vary spacious and nicely curated/landscape, its exhibits fit the vibe of a retro gaming convention way more! Also one of the only places on Long Island that didn't give me a headache driving there lol
I did a double take at the thumbnail before realizing that was indeed the Cradle of Aviation. It sounds cheesy but it makes me happy knowing you had a great time in my area. A lot of people take that stuff for granted so seeing you having a blast and wanting to return is refreshing.
Wish I could have gone to this show. I could spend a couple of days looking at the displays in the museum and another couple of days for the show itself. I'm 70 so I was around at the very start of the video game industry. Back in the 70's, I worked at a video arcade game company in San Francisco where we made Pong machines meant to go into bars, bowling alleys, and places like that. I can't remember the name of the company, but I think it was "Major Manufacturers". They were producing Pong machines before Atari existed. The PC board for the game was huge and consisted of all discrete IC chips (NAND, AND, Flip Flop, etc gates). There was no CPU nor software. The entire game ran on the IC chips. I think we were one of the first companies to produce an arcade game machine. Exciting times.
I feel that this way of holding events has become or will become a trend. A retro convention and a museum seemed like a great combination. I hope more museums open their doors to events like this.
The Cradle of Aviation is an incredible place that gets ignored by the general public often because its so hard to get to. Nassau County public transit is atrocious and this area is full of giant roads to nowhere, its such a shame. I've taken that train ride from Norfolk all the way to NYC, its such a nice trip, I think more people would use it if they knew about it.
Saw you doing b-roll and timing didn't work to stop by your table to meet you. But this is a great profile and the show was fantastic. Hopefully next time.
