This song was sung by a local in Union Hall when my Uncle Michael and four other fishermen went missing off the coast of Cork on 15th January 2012, they have all been found and laid to rest, may they all Rest In Peace
RIP to all who are lost at sea. So many brave hard working men trying to earn a living from fishing the job they love. Also great credit to their equally brave rescuers and so ably reflected in this great song.
So sad, Sophie. We in Cornwall lost 8 one night in December 40 years ago, and hold a vigil on every anniversary en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Penlee_lifeboat_disaster
My grandad drowned but he was more like a father to me than a grandad I even used to call him dad 9 years has passed since he died but every time I listen to this song I still cry and for others I know how it feels only the other day I was in his Jeep with my uncle and we were talking about all the good times Rip grandad love you 😢
I had to phone the RNLI when we got into high winds and couldn’t get the sails in on my wee dingy in the Firth of Forth hardly a great story but my life was at stake You guys are Saving life’s every god bless
Pop a Newfoundland lander started when he was ten and 62 years later was able to retire safely ashore. Our prays were answered each and every time he was at sea . I sailed myself for 16yrs and I too made it Home from the Sea. This song has a special meaning to those who sail the sea for a living in little boats and make it Home from the Sea.
What a great song! I have always been a fan of Liam, and as a volunteer marine rescue member, this song stirs up great memories and sad memories alike. But makes me proud to be a volunteer.
As a US Navy vet, I love this Hymn, and request that it be sung in Church on our "Veterans Day"... I believe it's your "Rememberance Day". God Bless all who serve today, and all of us who served before them.
A truly wonderful song sung by a great singer. Just volunteered for the RNLI in Dun Laoghaire recently and am looking forward to helping them raise funds in the future for the Lifeboats.
I live next to Kilmore, it’s lifeboat has saved a lot of lives, this song is special and always brings a tear to my eye. Liam was a powerful singer of great songs
Dunno what it is about the last chorus of this song that every time I hear it I well up! Ex RNLI Volunteer now living in Australia. by far the best voluntary lifesaving organisation in the world. Doesn't get enough creidt or recognition Proud to say i was involved with them
This was Liam. I was there. We recorded this in Dublin in or near Windmill lane studios. I sang in the 'lifeboat chorus' which was made up of whoever was hanging around the studio on the day. We also recorded some other song where we start clapping out of time for comic effect and then in time. I was there as a photographer. I am not related to Liam Clancy. I am not a lifeboat man. I still sing his songs and my favourite is 'The Dutchman'.
Got three volunteers in nsri so this is beautiful and it makes pray for everyone that volunteer in any way that put their live to help others thank you all
As an old sailor, I appreciate the efforts of the RNLI, Coast Guards, and other lifesaving organizations world wide. This song brings a tear to my eye and a lump to my throat. Eternal Father, strong to save, Whose arm hath bound the restless wave, Who bids the mighty ocean deep Its own appointed limits keep; Oh, hear us when we cry to Thee, For those in peril on the sea!
as a uscg aux coastie I can resonate with this song all to well we thank all who go to the sea, lakes, and rivers for the safety all boaters and when needed to search and rescue as needed with out any reservation when properly equipped
There’s no more noble service than rescuing people who “are in peril on the sea” my Doctor, an Irish Man , who ( think gained his medical doctorate at Trinity College Dublin) he runs the Dublin , New York, and the London Marathon. Personally I think he’s crazy, but I love him for his grit and determination. Safety at sea is very great leveller of human kind. Well done all who are in the Volunteer Services be it RNLI , or others ,are truly selfless individuals.
I saw "The Boy's" in Concert in Burlington VT in 1989. We had front row seats and I have to say that it one of the greatest evenings of my life, seeing them and singing with them and my friend's. I sadly miss them but always rember them. They were the greatest ever. Rick Flannery Cudlipp
Sophie, the whole country was rooting for your uncle and his crewmates, hard times but thankfully they were all found and brought home to the Quay. My sympathies to you and your family on your loss, fishing is a hard life.
From my wife's home town Carrick on Suir . He's a cousin by marriage, and she remembers being on his knee on stage at Radio City Music Hall., as a wee girl. He was singing Red Hair Mary to her. His like will never be duplicated. What a glorious thing......
Beautiful love the Clancy brothers growing up with them now in my seventys I play there music all the time makes me happy Rip guys miss u all so much☘️☘️☘️
The words come from a poem by Robert Louis Stevenson: This be the verse you grave for me: Here he lies where he longed to be; Home is the sailor, home from sea, And the hunter home from the hill.
This is Liam Clancy. This was originally released on Phil Coulter's album 'Words & Music'. The version on Phil's album 'Songs I Love So Well' is exactly the same except Phil is singing instead of Liam. The instrumentation and backing vocals are the same one Liam sang to. On the 'Words & Music' album of Phil's, the Dubliners are heard singing 'Take Me Home'. Same thing here. Using the same background, Phil replaced the Dubliners voices with his own.
This is Phil Coulter singing it, not Liam. It WAS written by Phil Coulter after the tragic loss of his elder brother, Brian, who was tragically drowned in Lough Swilly in 1984. This song was recorded by Phil, the Clancy brothers and the Lifeboat Chorus (actual lifeboat crews).
