Who'd have thought Jon Wells didn't think it was a red. If it were other way round & a wigan player did it he'd be going mad, get him off campbell I caynt speyk. Be wanting him fined, banned & jailed if it were a wigan player. Proper clown that mon.
Stop the video when his arm actually hit the dude's face, you can clearly see that it's almost at 90 degrees up when it connects, with a foward motion. 100% legit call by the ref, this should not be unpunished.
Then look at his legs and feet when he spot the other player. He starts to lift his body so his elbow hit the head. You can clearly see he almost jumped while openning arm. When you protect yourseulf you don't explode outwards, You contract your body and prepare for impact. This is a tough call tho it's not 100% evident but when you know contact sports, you know how to behave in half a second...

How can anyone say that's harsh any rugby player trying to protect themselves either step or drop their shoulder you never raise your elbow to protect yourself
His arm was way too far from his body, i don't understand why people question this. You can also see he raise it forward insted of bringing it closer to him. That was an offensive gesture not defensive. Refrees specialy in rugby can't let these unpunished.
Any situation where the doctors decide to drag out a receiver of such a move should be an easy red card. Rugby can not become a sport where defenseless (those caught strung out unable to move away from attacks) players end up becoming fair game to be removed for replacements without penalty issued against players who are such dangerous regarding their conduct on the pitch.
This is the RFL right, Rugby League in England. What Stadium they are using? I notice watching the EPL that some stadioums in the North of England show fainted Rugby League marks.
Even in slow motion you can see him swing his elbow into his face, then starts screaming "NO WAY" when he gets sent off 😂. How the disciplinary overturned this was beyond me. If that was a Wigan player, he would've got at least 4 game ban
It was unfortunate, but that was instinct. You look at that vision in real speed & you can tell that's a natural reflex for someone with another person coming at them with speed.
The difference between the codes is evident right there! Obvious sending off in Union,,and the backchat to ref would not happen. Don’t know much about league but if they are allowed to lead with the elbow,,that’s nasty and unsportsmanlike!
sherman4970 yeah totally, like when Hartley and Slimani traded cheap shot forearms to each others faces and only got yellow carded.... There are plenty of union videos showing just as bad fouls and backchatting and a few involve Hartley
The referees in rugby wouldn't normally take that from the hull players but he's spineless and too keen on explaining his decision, in the wc final against england the referee told an england player to walk away very firmly and he did no questions asked.
Of course you can't raise the elbow into a tackler's head. And if you're not convinced it's dangerous, just look at the results on this play. Easy call.
ynotnilknarf39 “sonshine” 😂you can see that watts clearly lifts his elbow up to 90° while McIlorum is running towards him Micky couldn’t have stopped mid tracks and let him run past could he you goon! Pause it at 2:11 you can clearly see he takes in the ball passes it to the other hand and raises his elbow while Micky is running in. Then has the audacity to lift his elbow up again. Clueless. specsavers sponsor the refs and they’re giving out free eye tests.
ynotnilknarf39 ynotnilknarf39 you sound like a 7 year old child “you’re wrong, I’m right” however he lifts his elbow up multiple times which is very much evident. And never mind specsavers, need get a concussion test more than Micky Mac did, your obviously a bit confused
ynotnilknarf39 horrendous language and you obviously sound like an ignorant person who can’t see both sides of an argument or take into consideration the opposing points or that you maybe wrong. Believe it or not you can be wrong, I recommend using what little brain cells you have left to think this through :)
Dan scrums? It’s a ruck, at least educate yourself lol, after playing both sports I prefer union, uncontested scrums, no fighting for the ball, fairy sport league is, real men play union period.
You can't say as a spectator cheat sorry guys. I know rugby league like rugby is a physical game. But there is some limit. Anything with head contact should be a red card

that was a bad tackle in any code he's come in high against a bigger player.he had a run up and hit him in the elbow.if he'd hit the hip he'd have put him down.
That was more of a brace as a normal reaction coming into contact..... NOT as the title says ' leading with an elbow. Very complicated issue but definitely not intentional. Tackler was partly to blame.... not tackling low enough
Yeah ok ok by the rules the elbow hit the guys head so red card! However I would argue in this instance that was a result of the tackler being a headless chicken and not selecting a shoulder to tackle with also he was too high. The guy with the ball was unsure of which way to brace for the tackle he tried to turn one way catching the headless chicken-man in the face with his elbow. it wasn't deliberate i guess is my point he didn't mean to knock the guy clean out. It was a technically very poor tackle!
how do u know the guy was unsure? how was it a poor tackle? he led with the correct shoulder, his arch was just below chest level, idk about you, but i think you need to actually know how to play footy, i mean you sound like a 12 year old, just stick to ur maths and english.
Well i say its a poor tackle: A. because he didn't actually tackle the man and B. because he knocked himself fucking cold out. I dunno what planet you live on you mate, but most people would agree that knocking yourself out and not tackling the man with the ball constitutes as a poor tackle. Not sure how it works in rugby league but this guys a number 9 and he looked fucking tiny, so whys he rushing up against a guy twice his size trying to land the big shot? In union the number 9 is generally the smallest guy on the pitch and doesn't generally rush up to put in a big tackle in this way.
They should take into account who the foul was committed against, this is normal play from current and historical Wigan 9's. I'd have given Liam man of the match for this!
Good old mcilorum getting dropped🤣,could watch that allday, there's one of super league dirtiest players by far, jwhat goes around comes around.ust to top that off big wattsy is a good pal of mine🤣🤣👊
Joe Neadley you're right. Rugby is often tough contact, and the player just acted instinctively... But ist not really the worst decision. The red card of damian de allende against the all blacks was ever worse than this
No, Nick. Both of you are wrong. Tough contact is enabled, but you have to use your brains before brawn. That is why Watts was sent off, because he didn't think clearly to fend off McIlorum with a hand off. Instead he used the elbow. YOU CANNOT DO THAT.
commentators should just try to be honest , two fouls in two tackles. not rocket science ....... two fouls no excuses, , fact..... the referee should also be punished for his lack of responsibility, cowardice and incompetence.
sicne when the hell was that illegal????? thats literally part of the sport. of you cant tackle the guy without eating an elbow then youre not making a good tackle. ive never heard of this rule in my whole life.
geez those commentators are useless....not a send off the elbow was not raised that much.....short player runs himself into the elbow, poor tackling technique.
The dude ran in straight like an idiot leaving his line and opening a gap if the runner had more time his arm wouldve extended therefore calling it a palm not an elbow silly decision from ref yes the elbow did hit but it wasnt delibrate also if a man runs into to go for a tackle he shouldnt have his head in that position its dangerous and could probably kill you if he tackled correctly his head would be at the runners backside or back but because this idiot decided to ditch his team and go in for a hit his technique was incorrect and he injured himself his body and head should be in a line his head shoukdnt have been at such an awkward angle
CHICKEN NUGGET that's how you play rugby though you should always put pressure on the other team it's only red cause he actually could have stopped the elbow from happening
thebbxpanda you put pressure on the other player but his form of tackling and position was what caused his injury the other player is trying to palm him off but due to how fast he rushed he had no time to bring up his hand completely and i get y ou when you say that is part of the sport but what he did was leave his position fod a tackle if thd player passed the ball the defenders are pretty mch one man down bringing the pressure is one thing but running in on your own is another your entire team is pressure but you running in on your own is much much different not to mention he came in from an angle meaning he left the man he should be marking for another you run in a line defend the player in front of you or have uou team shift down the runner could have stopped the incident stopping his hand but because it was only one man rushing up to him instead of the team providing pressure he went for a palm but ckuld not completely extend his arm
he led with the correct shoulder, his arch was just below chest level, he stuck the elbow out, idk what your looking at but i was looking at the matter at hand.
Keith Wetherhold pause it at 2:11 his elbow is up at 90° it’s pretty obvious McIlorum couldn’t have stopped then could he? he also purposely swapped the hand he was holding the ball in to stick his elbow out.
