Maarya Rehman with over a decade of experience with libraries talks about the importance and need of libraries, even in the digital age, and how they serve as a good third place. Maarya began her career in libraries over 18 years ago, developing stock, information services, and programmes for public libraries across London. In 2015, she moved to Pakistan to open two libraries for the British Council, in the cities of Lahore and Karachi, as well as a nationwide Digital library. The British Council libraries in Pakistan aim to bring the best of UK culture and library provision to a new audience in Pakistan. Maarya studied Social and Political Sciences at the University of Cambridge. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. I think the next generation of third spaces will need to incorporate a free and accessible area to work from a computer. A place to safely bring children without parents required to be in a constant state of vigilance. A place where singles, families, and seniors go because they know there's always something going on that they can watch peacefully or participate in. (calisthenics, busking, theatre, pubs, cafe, etc). A place that incorporates architecture, seating design, and acoustics to blend quiet spaces in with social spaces. A space that encourages chance encounters with someone or some group that could enrich your day, week, month, or decade.

My junior college (or "community college"), late '60's, early '70's, used to have a vibrantly social student union, which was a huge open space building filled with tables/chairs, along with an adjoining cafeteria and book store. And just a short walk from that building was the huge college library, now with a Starbucks along side, added early 2000's. Unfortunately with student life now done "virtually," the student union is empty, and the library building relocated, downsized etc.. Apparently the idea is that virtual third places are better(?!) than the physical ones..

Antiquity shows that physical libraries were serious hubs, meccas, for third place phenomenon.
